[Q] Phone keeps rebooting, unable to enter the recovery - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've had my S3 for over a year now and it has been mostly running great. Whenever I've had issues I tried to solve them by myself, but this time I was unable to fix my phone, so I must ask for help.
Here's what happened. I left my phone on my desk today and one of my co-workers fiddled with it. He opened SuperSU and then a message popped up saying that SU binary needs to be updated. He then choose to update it via CWM. The phone then restarted and upon starting shows the startup screen then it tries to enter the recovery, but instead it just shows it for a brief moment and then it restarts again. It keeps doing that over and over again. If I remove the battery and then insert it back again, the phone will turn on by itself and continue to reboot after failing to open CWM.
I tried to enter the recovery, but had no success. The phone did enter the Download Mode though, but flasing a ROM via ODIN will remove all of the data stored on the phone and I really need it. The phone is currently running Android Revolution HD 40.
Is there a way to get my phone operational again without loosing the data stored on it?
Thanks in advance.

First of all what are co workers doing messing with your phone I would seriously not be happy!! screen lock comes to mind!
As the above post said flash another recovery in odin I recommend Philz recovery, backup your data in recovery then factory reset if that does not work flash another rom via recovery or return to stock with odin. You can also boot into recovery with adb but I would try above first.
Then charge your co-worker for all the time wasted trying to fix phone

Thank you so much for the idea, I just tried this and it worked! After flashing new recovery via ODIN, I'm now able to access my phone. There was no need to flash the ROM again, as it was fine, the only problem was with the recovery.
And I still have my data!
Thank you very much again, cheers

He's actually a good guy and I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose. He told me that he was playing a game and he tried to add more coins using GameCIH. Then the prompt to allow root access to the app came up along with a notification to update the SU binary. He said he pressed that button by mistake. I wasn't mad at the guy, I was only upset that I may lose my data.

Help with unbricking my phone!

I was using my phone at work 3 days ago during lunch and it was running fine. I was playing a new Kairosoft game. Once my lunch was over I put the phone in my pocket and I went off to work. When my shift ended I pulled out my phone and it was stuck in a bootloop with the Cyanogen logo. I rebooted it and nothing worked. I went into CWM to re install the ROM and it freezes every time. I used oden to try and fix it to go back and unroot my phone to start fresh. I stepped out of my room to use the restroom and my little curious nephew comes in and grabs my phone in the middle of an update. Now when I turn the phone on it says firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again. I downloaded keys and it didn't recognize my phone. I can't even get into clockwork mod recovery anymore. On Odin it has the yellow bar and when I try and flash the files I need to go back to stock it fails when it writes the NAND. I really miss my phone. It has been a while since I have been here. I don't know if my phone is a ICS. I got it last year. I have searched everywhere and nothing seems to work. I'll keep searching because I am determined to get it fixed but I don't want to flash the wrong thing. My phone still goes to Download Mode. According to what I have read it means that it's still salvageable. I hope so. Thanks for the help!
If you can boot into download mode then just flash a rom from there? Problem solved

[Q] help :(

Hi guys,
once again this painful phone hasreset by itself. I was testing some headphones to make sure they work, played a song and the phone rebooted immediately and got stuck on the samsung logo. For last couple of hours i've been removing the battery and turning it on but the phone is just stuck on the logo. I managed to get it into recovery, used the fix permissions option and rebooted the phone, it took its time but it booted in the end and showed me the initial setup screen and constantly showing force close errors for some apps. I had to remove the battery as the phone was freezing from all the force closes. Now it won't boot again.
Unfortunately this has happened too many times and I want to send the phone off for repair/replacement tomorrow.
The phone is rooted, has the rxtreme rom installed and another kernel installed and the flash counter is not at 0 anymore.
Is there a way I can set this phone back to normal and reset the counter without booting and using the triangle thing app?
Cheers

boot into recovery or download mode and flash stock rom via recovery/odin (depending what mode you are in). make sure to do all wipes (full wipes!). i am not aware of any way to reset counter without triangle away.
mobile odin pro or samsung kies should get you back to stock im pretty sure mobile odin pro resets flash counter . not sure about kies but i think it does too
thanks for the replies will i have to root a stock rom, run triangle away then reflash?

Ok mate thanks, just to clarify, unrooting after running triangle will not increment the counter right?
Also is there any way for me to backup my texts and other important application data
Try the basic faqs and guides .
It's okay i backed up data partition via recovery and done a full wipe, phone is booting fine. gna try a new ROM. I'm pretty sure this will happen again but whatever. send it off next time when i can afford to be without a phone
Cheers for the help !
Sorry for double post..
So i backed up /data in recovery. I'm going to install ripper ROM on my phone which is what I had originally, and I'm going to fully wipe my phone from rXtreme. Can I restore the /data backup into ripper or will i have problems?
Cheers.

[Q] Unrooted Phone Will Not Boot

Hello, everyone! I'm in search of a hero who can help me resolve this (frustrating) issue! I'm sure you have heard it before: my phone will not boot fully; it is instead stuck permanently on the white VERIZON logo screen.
Model: SCH-I545
Carrier: VERIZON
Color: BLACK
Size: 16GB
The phone has not been rooted.
It does not have USB debugging enabled.
I have not installed any custom recovery software or mods.
There is no external SD card installed.
First, some back story. My phone asked me to perform a software update roughly a week ago. About a minute into the update, it told me the update failed. I assume this occurred because I was on the train and passed through a tunnel. Afterwards, my phone began acting up, rebooting itself randomly, and applications(such as web browser, text messaging) would randomly crash on me. I assumed another update would come to resolve the issue, but unfortunately yesterday(Sunday), my phone again rebooted itself, only this time it would not make it past the white VERIZON screen.
My goal is simply to recover my files from the device before either returning it or performing a factory reset. I have scoured the internet for hours trying to find a way to achieve this. I can boot my device into the stock recovery console and into ODIN download mode. I have tried clearing my phone's cache in recovery mode, which did not help. I have tried booting into safe mode by repeatedly tapping the menu screen, but it did not help.
I have ADB installed and a USB driver from Samsung and a USB driver from Google. I can get my phone to appear using ADB in sideload mode only while in the recovery console. Unfortunately, this is of limited use because apparently it can only be used to install software packages, and the phone seemingly rejects all attempts to install packages such as CWM and TWRK, which I had hoped would allow me to use the ADB pull command.
I have tried installing these mods using ODIN as well. Again, failure due to security apparently. :crying:
If anyone has any idea how I can retrieve the files from my phone, you'll be my hero forever!

Sounds like that upgrade definitely went wrong. Since you were upgrading to Kit Kat I'd say flash the No Wipe file from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172
Your phone won't allow for CWM or TWRP recoveries since it's a build past MDK. Also if you want prior to using that Odin file go to play store and get the app " Samsung phone info" and run that app and take a screen shot of the bootloader section. Actually do that before hand anyways. I'll link you to it

hopefully people will learn by this NEVER take any update while traveling, too much can and will go wrong.............
Yea I think people have to much faith in Verizon. There not setup to handle anything but a perfect download and install when it comes to their OTAs. They're best done on WiFi at home

Hi BeefJerkyAddict,
I would reccomend to do a total full wipe with Odin, this usually solves all of your problems. All of your stuff should be clear for restoring once you do that. But after you do the full wipe, immediately go to settings and then software update because your phone will be on android 4.3 and not 4.4.2.
Here is the link with the instructions as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
You're welcome.
Yea I guess I'm just biased to updating straight to kit kat lol if the op has the chance to stay on mk2 he might as well. And I suggested no wipe first just so not to lose data. Up to the op though

Hi guys,
Just posting to say THANK YOU for the help. After a long download, I got ahold of the VRUFNC5 No-Wipe file and successfully installed it using ODIN3 v3.09 without a hitch! All of my pictures, videos, text messages, are all right where they were, and my operating system is upgraded.
Thank you so much for taking the time to point me in the right direction. I had nearly given up!

[Q] Encryption Unsuccesful! Urgent help required!

I've been running Blisspop 5.1.1 on SGS3 with TWRP as my recoverey. Lately, I've been having many issues with my battery. Yesterday evening, I suddenly got the message of encryption unsuccesful on my phone. I tried every possible thing to do get rid of that message, but the phone wouldn't budge. My only option was to hit the phone resest button and see what happens, I understand running a custom rom with root excess can inexplicably damage my phone in such situations after reading a lot of posts.
The phone now displays the S3 logo and keeps flashing at the teamwin recovery splash and blinks right there.
I need urgent help to retrieve it back and any leads on this will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
you need a usb/otg cable..

Alcatel one touch fierce xl won't get past Android is starting screen

So I rooted my phone using king root and everything was working fine up until I tried to switch from kingroot to super su using super sume. After that my phone just reset and at first was endlessly restarting, after shutting it off and back on I was able to get it to stop endlessly booting but ran into a different issue. The phone boots up and reaches the "android is starting... Starting apps." Screen and doesn't go anywhere past that. I went into recovery mode and preformed a data wipe to see if that would work and the problem still persists. I am in fact running on stock no clockwork recovery or anything of that nature. If anyone can help that would be great! ?

im in the same boat as you.
Damn....................
Im in the same hole as all of you or at least was....
So the problem with this is that these rooting programs such as kingroot and Kingoroot arent compatible with a lot of devices that aren't popular such as alcatel phones for instance....... although it is available for higher versions fortunately. The glitch that we have all had is due to trying to use 2 rooting programs (NEVER TRY THIS!!!!!!!) on one device and interference when booting up causes this annoying bootloop. Im assuming that no one here has managed to unlock the bootloader, so what you must do is plug your phone into a pc via usb and then try to download this firmware:
drive.
google.
com/open?id=
0BwBw9a_
6fkKUMmpWWno0S2ljTjA
Justt put it all together and download the firmware afterwards.... the pc must detect the phone first so this program can detect and install the drivers. Requires a format tho, so take that in mind. Hope it works for you guys......
