[Q][Solved] Need help with compatibility check Siyah Kernel on NeatRom - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have rooted my i9100 (JB 4.1.2) and flashed it with MS2 NeatROM v5.6 Aroma, which works fine except for the battery life which has plummeted dramatically since I've flashed it. Now I'm hoping to resolve this issue by flashing SiyahKernel S2-v5.0.1 (wish I could post a link but I can't because Rooky forum member).
My questions are:
1. Is the Siyah kernel I’ve selected compatible with my device and ROM? Will it work?
2. How do you check compatibility of kernels vs. installed rom and device? Phone firmware?
3. Can kernels in general improve/influence battery life?
Note!!: I am NOT looking for an opinion on how the combination ROM, Kernel, and Device will turn out, or which is best, I am merely asking if my selected Kernel is compatible with the ROM and device. I am new to rooting and do not know what details in flashed ROM and device specs to pay attention to when selecting a kernel, hence my questions.
Phone details:
SGS2 i9100 (JB 4.1.2)
Current kernel: 3.0.31-1484249 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 3
PDA: XWMS2
Phone/firmware: XXMS4
Thanks a lot for your help!

I'm in the same boat mate, in fact I think you have the same rom and aroma that I installed on my other half's S2, and I'm also looking for a kernel but too rooky to post in devs threads lol.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! I know there are numerous tutorials online on how to install kernels and roms, but the ones I found never stated any specific information on what to look for when combining devices, rom and kernels to make them work. Let's hope somebody here can shed some light on our issue!

The guys on Android fourms helped me with my S3 but not many on there with the S2 so they directed me here for help.

Just for comparison,
I installed
neatrom 5.3 neatrom + aroma v 5.5
and used v6.0.1.2 siyah kernel to root it in the first place.
I'm now looking for a custom rom for overclocking, I put one called Boeffla on my S3 that has an app to go with it for tuning, my score on quadrant has jumped up about 3000 points after some overclocking :good:

Is not that
Siyah-s2-v6.0b5-CWM?
2. You have to choose/select kernel according to the build number (settings/about phone)
3.yes they have a significant impact on battery life.
You can improve your battery life by using custom kernels.

Yes, Siyah-s2-v6.0b5-CWM is the newest update. But because it is a beta I assumed it would not be stable. Perhaps I am wrong about that.
So you're saying I need a kernel that runs on buildnumber XWMS2 (my buildnumber)?

You can flash that kernel on your current rom .
And when choosing kernel like siyah dorimax apolo
You have to see their version which is mentioned in op of the respective kernel .
For e.g apolo v4.x is for jb 4.1.2 roms
For some kernels like philz ..you have to see the build number.

Hang on a min India, the other halfs phone has philZ on it now, can i still put Siyah v6.0 back on?

There shouldn't be any issues when going from philz to siyah. I haven't used siyah for a while but remember flashing neat with siyah without problems. BTW if you're going to try out dorimanx with neat you should use 8.*** version. If you ask there prepare for some tongue lashing

MMC-SUPERBRICK-BUG Kernel?

Is there any way of finding out wether or not I have a kernel that is affected by the MMC-Superbrick-bug? I strongly believe I am not affected by this bug, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
I have a Cyanogenmod Kernel which I flashed using the "noob-proof" guide for Cyanogenmod 9.

-Only original/stock kernels of ICS 4.0.4 firmwares are affected by the super brick bug.
Kernels based on the stock 4.0.4one may also contain the bug e.g insecure kernels for rooting or CF-ROOT.
-99.9% is the custom kernels however do not have this super brick bug. I can confirm these kernels don't have it:
-Siyah kernel
-Dorimanx kernel
-dream kernel
-Speedmod kernel
-Neak kernel
-Codeworkx kernel, shipped with CYANOGENMODs and AOKP Roms

Thanks a ton! You guys are the best :good:
Guys its only a suggestion.....
It will be good if some developer can make a windows based application or script that can check any kernel with "MMC_CAP_ERASE=1 or ENABLED"
So one will have to just select a kernel file (.zip or .tar or zimage) and the application will return with a message saying "This Kernel is SAFE to Flash !!!" or "Danger !!! This kernel has Brick bug. Install with extreme caution"
That will help people to check any kernel before flashing and without any fear of brick..
Add fluxi kernel to the safe kernels list.

How can i safely update to jellybean cm10?

Hi guys, I'm new here and I'm thinking about changing the ROM on my SGS2.
Searching around the internet I noticed the warning about this bug quite a few times. I didn't find a way to check if I got it though.
Here are the info from my phone:
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: I9100XXLPQ
Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ-CL223505 [email protected] #3
Build number: IML74K.XXLPQ
I've updated from GB to ICS when it first came out through Odin. I didn't wait for the ROM from my provider, though, but just downloaded a rom from some Poland provider.
So, do I have this bug? If you can't help me, can you please tell me how I can find out?
Thanks
Theres a sticky in the general section listing the firmwares affected by the bug. But it only affects 4.0.4. You're on 4.0.3
So as long as you dont upgrade to 4.0.4 stock you're safe.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
@HAXTREME: Thank you! I found the sticky now. I'm glad my ROM is not affected.
How about Jelly Bean ? I have a brick bug chip on my i9100...is it safe to go to JB or JB kernels are affected ?

As of now, nobody seems to have reported the emmc bug on the leaked JB. So its probably safe. If you want to be 100% safe, you may want to use a custom kernel with the JB stock firmware.

Hi HAXTREME,
I've flashed my SGS2 with Dorimanx kernel V7.27, which says that this version is safe kernel.
So can I flash a custom ROM like Resurrection Remix JB on my SGS2 - I9100 phone ?
How can I verify my phone is safe from brickbug issue ?

I am going to install custom JB and test a couple of custom kernels. But I'm not sure if all custom JB kernels are 100% safe ? I know Dorimanx, Siyah and Philz are safe.
Btw will that procedure be safe for me (I am on a stock GB 2.3.3 now) :
1. Root phone
2. Flash custom JB rom with CWM or ODIN.....or flash safe custom kernel first ? If so what custom kernel will fit stock GB 2.3.3

First You have to chceck if You have brick bug chip with "emmc brickbug check" from Play Store or with app from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27014974&postcount=1
And You need to know which kernels are safe but I don't have exact info. The kernels that I mentioned earlier are safe.

You're on GB so none of those kernels will work for you.
You'd need to first flash stock 4.0.3 and then you can flash one of those kernels.
Or directly flash the leaked 4.1 stock JB. Like I said, AFAIK nobody has found it to be affected by the emmc bug so you should be safe flashing it. Else if you don't feel it safe, use the procedure I mentioned to install siyah, dori, etc.

This may be a bit of a n00b question, but I want to make sure I don't risk bricking my phone...
I have Android stock 4.0.4 on a non-rooted phone with the superbrick bug (damn!).
(Network unlocked Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 Android 4.0.4 stock image (downloaded via mobile internet),
Baseband I9100XXLQ6,
Kernel version 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Wed Aug 22 22:58:24 KST 2012,
Build number IMM76D.XWLPW.)
If I only want superuser access on the phone, what is the safest way of going about it? And is there a way of backing up absolutely everything on the phone including the hidden folders like /EFS etc in case I want to go back to the non-rooted version, or in case something goes wrong and I can still flash the phone?
I found a tutorial on teamandroid that looks the easiest to follow, it states to install Odin, then Download SiyahKernel Root I9100XWLPW, then flash/install, does this sound safe, or is there a risk of bricking my phone as I have 4.0.4 with the superbrick bug. (It's a simplified version of the tutorial as I cannot post links yet!)
PS I won't be updating the firmware after this.
Thanks in advance guys.
PS If I do need to flash the 4.0.3 or earlier, where can I find the official ROM's?

XWLPG is 4.0.3. So it is safe ROM. Why you want to jump to risky ROM?
Neat ROM is stable but you need to use with kernel like siyah, dorimax or speedmod . Don't use stock kernel.
But since neat rom have siyah kernel, i can say it is safe (not 100% guaranteed).

[Q] Kernel help needed

Hi all,
I stupidly started messing around with flashing kernels onto my SGS2-P, and then found out about this emmc bug.
My device is one of those affected, and I want to go back to my official kernel, mainly because of the emmc worry and
also the G-sensor for orientation doesn't work anymore.
The kernel I flashed was 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023.
Does anyone have the official 3.0.15-I9100PXXLPH-CL378510 [email protected] #3 kernel? I have searched the forums but only found a ROM and not sure how to extract just that kernel to flash it.
Please please anyone, if you can help I'd be very appreciative.

Siyah kernel is a stable kernel and is one of the most popular kernels for our S2.. so it is completely safe to flash Siyah with CWM/Odin considering that you follow all the necessary steps to get it done correctly , here's how http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-hacks/how-to-installflash-a-new-kernel-on-galaxy-s2-i9100/

[Q] Can I flash a custom ROM ?

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum.
Currently I'm using my SGS II with ICS Stock (4.0.4) upgraded through Samsung Kies (hope it clears that I've stock ROM).
My Baseband version : I9100DDLPB
Kernel Version : 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT
Build Number : IMM76D.XWLPW
I've recently rooted my phone to flash the custom ROM.
But today i checked some posts from this forum that, flashing a SGS II running on Stock 4.0.4 may brick the handset here.
I read the complete post and got very much disappointed that I couldn't flash any custom ROM from my Stock ROM, but lastly I looked over the firmwares which have these emmc bug and found that my device is not in the list.
So with this information can anybody tell me whether I can go for flash the custom ROM ? or do I need to flash a new Kernel ?
Thanks,
Hereticnine.
If it's not listed as an 'insane chip' (affected by the emmc bug then it should be safe to wipe. But if you're gonna be flashing a custom ROM eventually, you may as well flash a custom kernel now itself. Just to be completely safe, ya know?

My Bad !!!!
Just now checked with an app available on Google Play, eMMC Brickbug Check and got the result as "Insane Chip".
Also tried with Got Brick bug found in this forum. It also said the same like DANGER !!! :crying: :crying:
So I think, customization is over for me !!!! I should stay out from flashing ROMs.
And HAXTREME, Thanks for the reply.
Thanks,
Hereticnine.
Flash a safe kernel which has MMC_CAP_DISABLED (e.g. siyah kernel) on your rom with odin. You will get yellow triangle but you can remove it later with triangle away if you want to
From that point on you can flash any custom rom you want or or do a wipe from cwm...
Key is making sure you're running a safe kernel all the time, then you should have no problems, as long as you flash roms which are compatible with I9100 international version

Flash a safe kernel which has MMC_CAP_DISABLED (e.g. siyah kernel) on your rom with odin. You will get yellow triangle but you can remove it later with triangle away if you want to
From that point on you can flash any custom rom you want or or do a wipe from cwm...

So, there wouldn't be any problem if I flash with siyah kernel, Am I correct ? Or should I wait for some update from Samsung on fixing this bug.
Thanks,

Correct.
I would not wait for Samsung fixing anything in regards of this matter. The community has brought this huge issue to their attention long time ago and nontheless they released / keep releasing (?) dangerous updates to their customers!
Elite Recognized Developer "Entropy512" has written a very interesting (and long!) story of his experiences with Samsung:

No problems flashing siyah because emmc bug is disabled.
AS to an update from Samsung I do not believe there will be one as they are releasing Jellybean by the endof the year,
JB uses a totally different file structure.

Thank you All for your replies.
I've downloaded the latest Siyah Kernel, I'll try to flash it and hope it goes without any issues.
Please tell me if I need to take care of anything else while flashing Siyah Kernel.
I did the nandroid backup & took all other back ups using Titanium.
Hope it suffices for flashing.
Thank you.

Well, about the brick bug, I just know there's a app to detect the chip and unfortunately my phone has the insane chip. but if I'm not mistaken I've been wiped my phone several times with 4.0.4 stock kernel before yet it's still safe till now, it's the checker or I'm just being lucky? but nevermind there's leaked 4.1.2 now haha..

AFAIK the brick bug is non-deterministic. So you could wipe data several times without a problem n suddenly one time you try it n your phone is a rather expensive paperweight. If your phone indeed has an 'insane chip' count yourself lucky and don't risk it too often.

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum.

Hi kilometers4,
Thanks for the information, can you please share me the link, where can I get this kernel latest version for S2 ?
Thanks,
Hereticnine.
Yipee !!
Today I flashed PhilZ Kernel & later tried Dorimanx Kernel too.
I like the Dorimanx kernel, it has several options.
BTW, how can I check / ensure that I'm free from Brickbug now ??

you will never be totally free of the brick bug, since it is embedded in the kernal. Developers of Philz, Dorimanx and others have edit the code that cause the brick bug to disable it.
When flashing avoid using any stock kernal from 4.0.4 and above to avoid the embedded brick bug software.

[Q] Galaxy S2 problems

Hello,
I have got a Galaxy S2 and updated to Android 4.1.2 from Sammobile.
Now I have got some problem:
1- battery drains very fast.
2- warm up. While playing game(Temple Run) or browsing the CPU temp is about 65deg and idle is 34-38degs.
I have:
SpeedMod 3.0.31 kernel
Baseband: I9100XXKI4
PDA: I9100XWLSD
CSC: I9100JVLS6
till now I have read all topics about these problems and installed the kernel and modem but they didn't work.
what I want now is please suggest me a Modem and kernel which are compatible with my phone and solves my problem. Or any firmware to solve this issue.
Any reply?

Neat ROM lite comes with 'Philz' kernel as its default one for u, which hass been very clearly mentioned in the changelogs for u
I couldn't solve the problem with Neat Rom lite.
While phone is in idle mode the temperature is 40-45, and when using it for browsing or other tasks it increases to 54 and in gaming 67.
And about battery drain still the same. In 30 minute game I lost 60% battery.
even it is more than before.
What now?
Try cm10.2 and if u don't play hd games then underclock to 1ghz

try kitkat roms

you can try some KITKAT Roms like Slimkat or its derivative Slimsaber. CM11 nightlies are also available now though not official release. BTW after playing games i alwys find my phone hot. it cools down later. i think thats normal. as for battery drain it depends on what apps are draining battery. a snapshot of battery usage might help members to pinpoint the problems.
He needs stability and less overheating si cm10.2 is best for 1ghz uc so it saves both battery and heating

I tried CM 10.2. I felt slight change in battery. But heating is still the same, even with under clocking.
Going to try KitKat Rom (Cyan Fox), maybe some other kernels.
For Cyan Fox two downloads are available one is "CyanFox" and other is "CyanFox_Nightly", what is the difference between nightly and the other one?
Any other suggestion is appreciated.
Download the latest here nightly may be post stable build

just try the neat rom aosp v2.5 its just great and amazing.
Finally I found a Rom and Kernel to solve the problem.
I tested different ROMs and Kernels and finally Neat Rom 5.6 and Apolo 4.13 (Extrem V2) Kernel worked.
I underclocked CPU to 1Ghz. And now in idle mode I have 25-30deg temp and while using phone for some tasks around 30-37 and when playing games the highest it goes to 55. And also good battery.
I couldn't get lower values than above with other Kernels and ROMs.
