[Q] IMEI 0049 error, no efs backup. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I have lost my IMEI after updating Googy-kernel from 2.1.3 to 2.1.4. I have read most of guides on xda and google,
I have tried:
- flashing stock 4.3 via Odin.
- flashing stock 4.0 via Odin.
- restoring backup from Philz recovery (sadly, it isn't backing up efs by default :/).
- Busybox + ariza patch.
- EFS Professional.
- some other 'fixes' that I already don't remember.
I have found one possible fix on other forum in my language, so I'll translate it for you, maybe somebody would be able to do it for me:
From working phone do:
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11 of=/sdcard/efs.sbn
Then do 'exit' and again:
adb pull /sdcard/efs.sbn
Send efs.sbn to user with broken phone.
Then in broken one do:
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11 of=/sdcard/efs.sbn
Then do 'exit' and again:
adb shell
su
pull efs.sbn of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11
exit
On 4.0.4 sim detection was now fixed after that, but was catching imei 000....0049.
And now backup IMEI as it shows, and load again 4.0.4. After flashing for mutliple times 4.0.4 I didn't lauched it, just flashed the backup, powered on the phone, did the configuration and voila. I've got my IMEI and everything is working. There is no imei duplicates with me and the other person who helped me.

Flash MG4 Modem via Odin!
Device: Samsung Galaxy S3
ROM: CyanogenMod 11 (Temasek Unofficial V36 )
Kernel: Boeffla-Kernel-CM11-2.1-Beta9-

Flashing that modem won't work. He needs to get that imei and serial number repaired.

I used to have, when I was using TWRP as a recovery, because I always was backing up it, but now, TWRP folder is gone. AGNi kernel did it once, but it had 0b weight (but now it's gone after flashing 4.0.4). I was using NeatRom 6.3, I have it backup'ed, but EFS sadly wasn't in it. :/ And I've just rechecked my phone, no efs backup from past. Just from last 2 days, since it was broken.

Trust me, I've read all of them. And my network problems aren't because of downgrade.
PS: Also I cannot turn off Factory Mode by editing values from efs/FactoryMode files. I have a box with phone info on screen (yellow font) on 4.3.

[Q] I9300 - corrupt IMEI after 4.3 downgrade to 4.04

Hello all.
I bought an Samsung I9300 with the 4.0.4. FW installed.
I updated the FW to
AP: I9300XXELL5
CP: I9300BUELK1
CSC: I9300VFGELL1
via over the air update and installed the following stock (and braning free) FW later on without problems (using Odin3-v1.85):
PDA: I9300XXBLG8
CSC: I9300DBTBLG6
Then I ran updates again and rooted it using CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.
Using EFS_Pro_1.4.7 I created an EFS backup.
I recently updated to stock FW 4.3 (I9300XXUGMJ9_I9300VFGGMJ5_VDI).
Since the FW was too buggy, I flashed stock FW 4.0.4 (I9300BUBLG3, I9300VFGBLG3).
After a reset (having wiped the phone of course) I noticed that there was no network connectivity anymore.
Googling a lot, I learned that the EFS is damaged (besides the IMEI is corrupt).
So I rooted the phone again and restored the EFS, unfortunately it didn't help.
I know there are many threads about corrupt IMEI and so on but none of the solutions helped me out.
Does somebody have any hints for me?
Try flashing an XXEMG4 or later modem.
I had the same issue as I went back to my 4.1.2 rom from 4.3 as well.
EFS version has changed in 4.3 and unless you made a backup from your original firmware, you wont be able to go back to an older modem.
Have a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289
It explains it in further detail.
I have same problem with Samsung gt p3100, please any one can help me?

I have read the mentioned faqs and guides and followed the instructions.
Unfortunately it didn't help.
My current problem is that I'm not able to restore the /efs partition.
Since I made the backup in April, it seems to be a prior-July 2013 (XXEMG4) version, thus a so-called "EFS v1".
Whatever I do, CFW Recovery tells me "Error mounting /efs!" and my IMEI and S/N are corrupt.
I also tried flashing the Rescue Firmware "I9300XXEMG4_KOR_MULTI_FACTORY" but then the phone is stuck in bootup loop.
Only flashing FW [I9300XXBLG8, I9300DBTBLG6, DBT, 4.0.4] makes the system come up but with /efs partition unmounted/empty.
It seems none of the other solutions work here or did I miss anything?
After searching the web a lot I found out why I am not able to restore the EFS backup:
I used EFS Pro 1.4.7 for backup. Back then the EFS partition was believed to be located on /dev/block/mmcblkp02 while the correct location is /dev/block/mmcblkp03.
As a result the EFS.img backup is sized 4096Kb instead of the correct size which is 20MB.
Restoring the wrong backup I corrupted my EFS partition.
I used a friend's i9300 for a new backup with EFS Pro 2.0.70 and restored that one on my phone to get FW 4.1.2 running on my phone again.
Now I guess I have to "send my phone for (IMEI) repair", right?
No, but you shouldn't have used another efs folder as this may be illegal in your country.
Format your efs partition then reboot your phone. The system should recreate the folder. On your pc, extract the contents (all the files and folders) from your original backup and paste them into the efs folder. Set the permissions and reboot.
The above is only what I recall from many previous threads, search and read here in xda.

As per my humble knowledge I have concluded that this problem has nothing to do with EFS things!!!
All you need to do is just download a Stock ROM from sammobile and flash the Modem File..
Thanks to XDA Members who provided the link it is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/geispctijpxqjms/Patched_Modem_I9300XXEMG4.zip
Flash the zip into recovery and you are done!

Well it's not like the phone works now...besides the phone doesn't have a valid S/N nor IMEI.
And as I already mentioned, the EFS backup is only 4MB and taken from an invalid path.
Besides I don't know how to extract the contents of the .img file.

[Q] i9305 no IMEI

I'm in big trouble...
I was on Cyanogenmod 10.2 for a long time, but yesterday I choose to upgrade to CM 11. I did a backup in case thing went wrong and did the update. And it did.
After update I've started my phone and I had no service/reception. So I went to restore my backup. I did this a few times so I was pretty safe about it. When I've tried to restore my backup, didn't work. The restore file didn't do anything but it clear the access to CM 11.
After that started a lot of research on the web for solutions.
I already tried to flash the firmware to stock, using the firmware from Sammobile. Now I get the no IMEI error.
I can't find any EFS folder or backup folder. I can only find the EFS folder but it's empty. I've used the Root Explorer to try and find this folder, but can't find it.
I already read some topics about the same problem but I can't find any solution that work for me.
Can you please help me?
Thanks

Samsung GALAXY SIII (i9300) - CyanogenMod Installer

Hello!
I want to change my ROM because TouchWizz UI sucks and my device is lagging... I like CM and I want to flash it on my S3. I want to install it via CM Installer, but I have some questions :
- Does CM have Gapps already installed?
- Should I backup the /EFS folder? And how?
- Give me a way to backup my Stock ROM, if my installation fails, I will go back to it. (A tutorial or smth...)
I know how to install CM via their installer, but I am worried about that EFS thing...and the backup also...
Thanks!

I tried to use the CM installer but it gave me an error, If i where you just flash it through CWM or TWRP its much easier (for me that is)
When i first flashed my I9300 (S3) i never backed up the EFS i just never felt the need but i had been flashing roms for around 2 years, but for a beginer it may be wise to back it up.
Also If you want to backup your stock rom you can create a nandroid backup or just backup your info and if it goes wrong then you can just flash it back to stock 4.3 through odon.
Hope this helped?
Let me know how it went.
Well... I need to backup my /EFS and my current stock ROM. Is there any way to do it without rooting or other complicated things? And also I need to know how to restore that backups if something goes wrong... I will install CM via CM installer as I said earlier.

How do I backup and restore /efs?
There are a few methods to backup /efs, but they all require customisation of your phone. Either root access, or a custom recovery. I appreciate that many of you do not wish to root your phones and just want to flash official ROMs via Odin... Well here are your choices:
Only use OTA or KIES to update (Official Method)
Root using CF auto root / Framaroot - backup efs and THEN flash via ODIN
Flash a custom recovery via Odin, backup efs and THEN flash a ROm via Odin
Risk it. Don't backup efs. Simply flash via Odin and hope for the best
...and here are the options for backing up / restoring efs (this list is not exhaustive)
EFS Pro - App needs root
SGSIII EFS backup / Restore - app runs from Windows / Linux and needs root
kTool - app needs root.
Philz advanced CWM rewcovery - custom recovery can take efs backups using the "Custom Backup" feature.
It's worth noting that some custom ROMs will give the option to backup efs, but you can never have too many backups!

[SOLVED]Service problems after installing costum ROM

After having S3 for some months, I decided to update it to 4.3.
So I searched online and saw some tutorials how to root and install costum ROMs.
I read few tutorials to be sure how to do that and after all went good and the ROM installed, One problem has rised: NO SIGNAL!
so I wiped all and installed a ROM STOCK.
After that the signal came back "half way". It's showing signal bars but I can't call to anyone, even after calling to my provider...
I just don't know what to do. Please help

That is your backup flash with odin
( When you flashed a custom rom it probably backed up your efs some roms backup by default)
I would just backup your efs you have at the moment just in case you have problems flashing. You will then be able to return to how your efs is now even though it is not fully working..
Or try this app >> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.hellcat.droiddev.ktool <<
The phone has to bee rotted to use ktool?
I also understand from the link you did about the EFS that there are two types of base bands and if I have an efs backup that I did on V1 baseband so I can't restore it on a v2 baseband, so my conclusion is to get back to 4.1.2... correct me if I am wrong

I also understand from the link you did about the EFS that there are two types of base bands and if I have an efs backup that I did on V1 baseband so I can't restore it on a v2 baseband, so my conclusion is to get back to 4.1.2... correct me if I am wrong

good that you found efs backup
yes you need root. or you use the recovery philz touch to restore your efs (then you don't need root, but a custom recovery).
well samsung roms based on 4.3 need efs v2, so you have to go back to 4.1.2 to restore your efs v1 backup.
if everything is working again, I would suggest you to use oding to upgrade to 4.3, because then everything should be updated correctly (but keep your efs backup, and make another one, just to be sure)
then you can try out again custom roms based on sammy 4.3
So what is the best option to restore it?
Because before I tried (while 4.3 stock rom was installed) the flash it with Odin but Odin always crashed when I was uploading it to Odin.
With kTool I tried before but when I am clicking on the button it says that it restored but he didn't asked for directory, when do I need to put it?
The same story with phliz, I also tried with this and he don't asks for directory, only asking whan the ending if the file-tar to bin...

Just extract the efs.tar and copy its contents to /efs.

Where is this folder located? I can't find it
and does it for xTool and phliz recovery destinations for teaking the recovery from?
Edit:
I found the /efs. I dind't know that I need to use root explorer...
I exchanged the files with my back up and suddenly instead of 0049 IMEI I got 0000 IMEI.
I tired also to flash a modem and also didin't work...

Hmm... try installing another EFSv2 modem, then do the /efs copying part again.
Suddenly after so restarts, the IMEI got back
But... The SN now is 0000000000
You'll need to correct the permissions of the files you've copied. Try searching for someone who already did this and duplicate what they did.

Ok,
I tried something new. I flashed a new modem, backed up a full backup and then installed a costum rom 4.3.
the IMEI GOT BACK! And even the SERIAL NUMBER!
But I think the serial number is not good because he has 16 or 17 (I don't remember) digits (numbers and letters).
But still i have signal bars but can't make or receive calls he says: "No registered on network"
For the finalle, I tried ARIZA patch but he Is stuck on 0%...
here I stopped, I really don't know what to do.
Don't use the Ariza patch once you've got your IMEI and SN back. Maybe try flashing a new stock version of Android with a EFSv2 baseband so as to not go through the copying fiasco.
