can I update safestrap from 3.11 to 3.65 by flashing the update through safestrap itself or do I need to uninstall it and then re-install 3.65?
Boot back to stock ROM, start ss from app menu, select uninstall recovery, then go to settings, apps and find ss, uninstall ss from app properties, then install ss 3.65. I'm not sure, but I think you may even be able to create a new ROM slot and restore a backup to the new ROM slot (so you may want to make a backup of your custom rom slot using ss before you try to upgrade ss).

Yes you can revert to stock ROM with matt's utility. There are two options. One wipes data the other does not. You can try either option, but the wipe data option is usually preferred.

I don't know for liquid smooth; I've never used that ROM. Couldn't hurt to use the latest assuming it's compatible.
On second thought I'm not sure if you meant Matt's utility or SafeStrap. In either case I usually try to use the latest version of everything unless I hear there is a problem.

I put cm9 full throttle on vzw RAZR. With safestrap. I understand that safestrap has to be enabled to flash custom ROM. If I would like to go back to my backup of my original system do I have to disable safestrap to restore? My restore says it is unsafe also. Is that normal? Thanks.

Ok, a few things about Safestrap.
Safestrap will essentially give you 2 OSes, Nonsafe (stock) and Safe (flashed). From what you've told us, it looks like you flashed a custom ROM on your nonsafe side. The nonsafe side is for your STOCK OS, the Safe side is for any flashed ROMs. I know it's confusing with how they word it but if you're flashing anything you need to be on the safe side.
If that's the case, you will need to use RSD Lite to fastboot back to stock, then re-root, reinstall safestrap then when youre ready to flash a custom rom, switch safestrap to the safe side.

Nope all you have to do is go into safestrap when you boot up Safe mode -> toggle safe system ->yes. It will then backup your Safe (CM9) side and restore you to the Nonsafe (stock) side. Think of safestrap like a toggle switch, you can toggle between the safe and nonsafe sides whenever you want.
Lemme know if this helps!

Well, as long as your stock rom is on the nonsafe side. When you boot up into CM, are you on the Nonsafe (RED LETTERS) or Safe (GREEN LETTERS) when you boot up (on the "press search to continue screen")?
When you're using safestrap you need to think of it like dual booting on OS on a PC, the nonsafe side needs to be your factory, stock rom. The safe side needs to be any custom rom that you want.
Does this help at all?

To go back just disable the safe system, should say "Safe systemISABLED" then reboot and it should go right into your stock rom.

Uninstall moto drivers, restart pc,install them again and try to change usb port.

I wiped all data and cache and factory setting. When ever I restart, sometimes it says: [Safestap: Disabled] or [Safestrap: enabled] I can access recovery. I tapped continue on both and just doesn't work.

EDIT: I Installed Hyperdrive successfully until the end. Its at this screen: Beginning Android OS 4.3 boot sequence... .... .... ...." It has stayed here for hours, all night. Should I take out the battery? Buttons don't work

I created the rom slot. Im MK2, I used safestrap because I have a locked BL. Whats SS? I used a ROM called Barebone Stock.
When ever I flash a rom, all that happens when I restart is it says safestrap: Disabled or enabled. I choose recovery every time because rebooting doesnt do any thing.

SS = abreviation for safestrap, thought that was pretty obvious
barebone ROM? Im not familar with that one being SS compatible. The safestrap disabled msg on display means the stock rom slot is active and the phone should boot to stock. When you have rom loaded into a rom slot 1 or 2 or whatever, you must "activate" that slot for it to boot. I would suggest deleting the rom slot you made and start over.

So, let's start from the basics - you're not telling us what versions of anything that you're using.
First, what build is your phone? i.e. the stock slot.
What version of Safestrap are you trying to use?
What version of Hyperdrive are you trying to flash?
When the phone hangs like that during boot, something critical has crashed that's preventing the boot.
You're booting Android 4.3 according to the above, so you should be flashing using SS 3.71 on build MJ7 or MK2 and Hyperdrive RLS14.
If all that is correct: the build is MJ7 or MK2, the Safestrap is 3.71, and you're trying Hyperdrive RLS14, then the likely cause is that you have a bad download. Check the md5sum after downloading to ensure that it's OK. Download it to your PC, not directly to the phone, then check the MD5 before transferring it to your sdcard and flashing it.

OK, If your stock slot is damaged, you probably need to re-flash and start over.
Download the MK2 "No-Wipe" rom image from this thread and flash it using ODIN 3.09 - that'll get you back to stock, Then try the Safestrap stuff again. Seems like you have the right versions of things, so if you follow the directions, it should boot OK.
Be sure to check the MD5 of anything you download. There's free software available that does that.

Well you probably just need the USB drivers for your phone that's all. I just went through that myself with my new laptop. I ended up just googling it and finding the right ones.
It will work for you, once your back to stock just use Saferoot again, then install SafeStrap again... Then be certain whatever ROM u flash is SafeStrap compatible. I'd say use ROM slots for the time being until your more comfortable with things.... Don't take that the wrong way... Just saying is all. No, the safestrap that you are talking about is the safestrap.apk. You use that to install/uninstall the hijack that safestrap uses to boot into recovery. Since you have root rights, you gave safestrap the OK to install a bootloader hijack, which operates before the OS(ROM) is loaded up. If you wiped stock slot, then rebooted the phone with out installing a ROM, the hijack would still be there, you would still be able to boot into recovery, you just wouldn't be able to go any farther than recovery. You would just get a black screen afterwards because, well, there wouldn't be a ROM for it to boot too.
If you wipe the stock slot, then install the ROM and Gapps that you want back onto that slot, everything would be fine.
Also from what I understand you CANNOT restore a backup from another slot to stock slot. You will have to do it fresh.
Hope this helped

Only real benefits of putting a ROM in stock slot is saving space on your internal sd card. There are other, little conveniences but that is the main one
I don't know what you mean about installing the recovery without the stock ROM. Safestrap is a root required.apk(application) that installs a hijack for a custom recovery. Once installed it stays there like I said in the previous post, til it is uninstalled or upgraded, or you flash a fresh firmware with a utility.
You don't want to upgrade it without having a ROM installed prior. The new safestrap .apk gives you the option of uninstalling the old 3.65 hijack then installing the new 3.72, it won't install over the old, you have to remove it first. You have to do this in the application, not in recovery, so that means a ROM will already have to be installed.
Right now you should just concentrate on flashing a ROM in stock slot if that is what you want, worry about the recovery update later, as it isn't a requirement. Maybe do some reading first so you have a better understanding of what you are doing before you do it. And figure out how to get yourself out of a problem before you get into it.
As for ROM's, all of them work with safestrap. All of them have their own individual kinks, bugs, and fixes. You would have to read through the individual ROM's forums see which ones you want to try out. I like SlimKat myself, and there are also custom JB ROM's. Since you are using a xt912 you will want spyder versions of ROM's not umts-spyder, that is for xt910

If you are only going to have one slot has to be stock. If you read hashcode's information on that you would have known. Since you are getting the Motorola logo, your bootloader is still there. You are a repairable softbrick.

This is matlgrofs utility for the xt912.. make sure to thank him. Follow the direction's EXACTLY!
It will flash a fresh firmware on your phone. And allow you to root it. The safestrap .Apk is a 2.xx Version so your backups wont work with it. So after you flashed the firmware and rooted, you can install the newer safestrap Apk.
Battery life is pretty important with this process, so the phone needs to be 100 (the phone doesn't charge in AP) you cannot cut this corner, if your battery goes dead in the middle of the firmware flash your phone very well will become a brick

If you are only going to have one slot has to be stock. If you read hashcode's information on that you would have known. Since you are getting the Motorola logo, your bootloader is still there.

thanks for the reply. I actually figured it out on my own. I already had that utility because I used it to root. I just didn't realise I could use it to recover the phone from a soft brick. I also didn't know what the button combo was but I did some reading this morning and thanks to the helpful post of others in various threads I sorted everything out. So everything is running good now and I'm using liquid smooth kitkat with ART enabled and tethering works so I'm happy. This is my first experience with a motorola device and so far it's been the easiest to get rooted and a custom recovery installed, but that whole rom slot thing through me off. thought since I had a rom installed already I could just wipe the stock rom but learned it doesnt work like that...so now I know. Thanks again for the reply though, your info is spot on
This is intriguing to think about, so can safestrap be uninstalled / installed from any working rom slot with any working custom rom?
I can see why this would be helpful, especially to save internal space. Is there a good minimalistic custom rom with enhanced utilities that could be installed in the stock slot for maintenance purposes? Or should I just backup my stock rom and put my favorite rom in the stock slot and just use it for advanced maintenance?
I do think though the first option might be smarter since it's good to have a maintenance stock rom that won't be modified through regular use to be able to boot into for specific tasks.
Any recommendations for stock slot replacement? you did mention slimkat, but are there any ultra basic yet utility heavy custom roms out there for spyder? (I'm using XT912)
Also do I need to do any other specific backup of my stock rom? other than the full back up in safestrap?
Just like the title says. I am unable to flash anything to the stock slot on SS. I have tried ,any different times. I have tried wiping the slot and then flashing a fresh version of the ROM I use and also wiping and restoring a previous backup. Everytime when I go to boot the phone it gets stuck on a black screen during boot up. I end up having to use Matts tool and reinstall things back to stock including having to reroot. Anyways I would love to use my stock slot. Any help would be great. thank you

Did you use advanced wipe and select everything except Internal Storage and Micro SDCard?
The stock ROM system partition is only 636mb; is the ROM and GApps package you're using small enough to fit there?

Yes I did use the advanced wipe and wiped all but internal/external SD cards. On the partition thing I'm not sure. Never looked at file size but I'm flashing LS with minimal gapps...others claim to have it on stock slot also.
So after I flash the stock slot on boot it gives me red moto logo. Then black screen. But its not 100% black. I can see some backlight is on cause I can see the splotches in the screen. If I press buttons like volume up the phone with vibrate a few times. Not sure what its doing but I end up having to reinstall system from scratch to fix it. I was hoping for an easy fix

Once I also had problems to flash with SafeStrap on stock slot. Then I had the idea to flash the custom ROM first on slot 1 (or 2, how you want). Then making a complete backup of that partition, and after restore it on stock slot. - That worked fine for me.

Wich safestrap Version? Uninstall recovery from safestrap, then safestrap, then install newest version, maybe this helps, but don't reboot without safestrap!

I am (and was) using SafeStrap v3.73 when I flashed to the stock slot, I know some previous versions were supposed to be able to do this but I never tried it before. Maybe you're already using that latest version but if not, it wouldn't hurt to try.

yes I am using the latest version of Safestrap. Any suggestions? I will try to redo it again this weekend when I have more time. Thank you

this might help..dont know if you would want to do this or not..i had a note 2 from verison with locked bootloader had to use safestrape ...with that phone the the devs left the recovery incomplete moved onto newer phones so i read..anyways only the stock slot was working in this recovery ..so we had to use stock slot only and the directions read ..flash over stock rom wipe everything except system..and could only use a custom rom with same kernal....example- i had stock jelly bean stock rom think it was 4.2.1 version..so i flashed alliance rom 4.2.1 version..and like i said before wiped everything except internal storage and system....and it worked perfect....dont know if this would work or not...but you said anymore ideas..so why not try....was just thinking..because the bootloader is locked ..shouldnt be able to flash custom rom on stock slot right?shouldnt be able to modify system slot..thats why with the note 2 diddnt wipe system and dirty flashed ,useing the same kernal...................................lol..just relized these posts are from years ago..feel dume now..and i thought i was helping someone..lol
