Not Much Development - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I was considering this for my next phone but it seems like there isn't a heck of a lot out there for it in the way of ROMS. Looks like most of the major devs are staying away from it? Is there a problem unlocking/rooting it or what's up with that? Your takes on the phone?

Yeah.....as of right now, if you don't have an MDK build you're kind of screwed. The phone is pretty locked down.

Stay away. It's your best option

If you haven't noticed, the number of original roms have dropped drastically each new phone like OG droid-> DX/D2 -> tbolt -> rezound / s3 -> s4/motox/one.

S4 is still the best phone out on the market....and even those of us that don't have a MDK version can still run custom ROMS, though limited. I kept my tbolt for almost 3 yrs before I got the S4 last fall and I couldn't find a MDK version so I settle with what was available and hashcode worked his miracle in giving us safestrap.
My battery can go almost 48hrs between charges with moderate use, completely unbelievable. I have 3 roms on my phone that I can switch between in minutes because of safestrap.

It's the way of the future, especially if your on Verizon there isn't many new phones that have huge development like in the past. But there's the xposed modules that are widely developed, so I think things are just shifting... why rebuild entire rooms when whe can just fix the broken pieces individually.. It's a decent enough phone, root does a lot. if flashing is that important best to stay with a legacy phone!

There are MDK s4's out there for sale.
I just want to inform everyone that if you want a MDK s4 you have to get the brown one. My mom and I went to best buy mobile in the mall a 2 months ago, after talking her into dropping that stupid iPhone. She got the the brown s4 and came with MDK. Now 2 months later I decided to get my daughter one since they are free with no activation fee for this weekend. Well to test the theory I had that brown is probably the most unpopular color it should have the MDK version and it did so I gave my daughter the black one that came with ME7 when I bought it.And of course kept the brown one so go get the Brown ones folks! I promise it will come with MDK. Oh and you have every right to check the phone out before the sale is final. If it's not mdk say nevermind or get the next best phone that you know has an exploit. I am finally flashing again my addiction is so satisfied now. I'm running cyanogenmod 11 and loving it! I like Beanstalk too.

be cautious
if your a crack flasher stay away.. maybe try an LGG2... that being said if you just want a stable phone GS4 is fine. Hyperdrive is a great go to rom, or the possibilities are really endless with just root + xsposed

Yeah I'm not so much addicted but it's really fun flashing different roms to see which one suits me best. Hyperdrive and touchwiz isn't for me. I like seeing whats out there other than safestrap with only one rom flashable "HD" and touchwiz.. I prefer having clocking and volting capabilities I have the s4 because it's the best phone IMO. And your right the G2 is a nice phone indeed.. But I see soo many people in these forums wishing they had MDK S4. Or mad that they accidently updated their MDK s4's I'm just letting every one know that in a 2 month period I have bought 2 Brown Verizon S4's and walked out with the MDK version. And you will too.

Phone is locked down. Not only that, it comes pre-loaded with an incredible array of crapware: both from Samsung and Verizon. It'll make your S4 run like my old HTC Hero. (Well, that is an exaggeration, but you get the idea. That crapware does negatively impact performance.)
My next phone will almost certainly be a Nexus.

Maybe it depends where you get it from I got mine from a bestbuy mobile in a mall with a verizon store just 100 feet from it. so people will just go to verizon to get it. maybe factor in things like that. Like walmart might have them on the MDK. Order one from the best buy mobile in the empire mall sioux falls SD. Idk you can't buy them from places that have alot of traffic I'd think. maybe I'm wrong but I know brown is not the popular color. 2 months apart I got 2 MDK phones Brown. Sorry to here that though.

I'm not I guess what U would call a crack flasher ... I've been with my GNex since the week it hit the market. I like finding a nice stable ROM with some customizations I like and I stick with it... When I got my GNex, I ran Gummy up until they dis-banded for some time instead of trying to re-write their entire build when Jelly Bean came out. I switched to XenonHD then and ran that up and through 4.3 releases. They were slow coming out with a 4.4 build so I am running Liquid KK which is adequate. I am grandfathered into the old unlimited data plan, I get 17+ down and 8 on the upstream on the phone here, so I run the house off the phones, got rid of cable net long ago. So tethering is important to me, then just a few other things like customizabe status bar/tiles and navbar. Other than that I don't have a lot of other use for elaborate features in a ROM. Nice n clean n smooth is all. May be switching to a different phone and poking around to see what's out there is all ...

Install Xposed, then Wanam.

Should I keep my note and root it or not?

I have been using the HTC evo on sprint for 2 years. My girlfriend saw the note and fell in love, and I was intrigued by the huge screen, since I use my phone more as a smartphone and less as an actual phone. So we went to ATT and bought a couple and are giving them a try, but haven't cancelled our sprint yet. She seems to like it a lot, haven't heard a complaint yet.
Out of the box, I was impressed with the screen for sure. Didn't liek the way the default browser handled zooming/word wrap on a lot of web pages, but a new browser fixed that. Battery life was good, but not great compared to what I was used to on some roms on my rooted evo. I am trying to learn to use the S-pen more. I haven't been blown away by the Note, but my Evo sure does seem small now.
I have been itching to root this thing and start installing some roms, but obviously wanted to wait until I was sure I was keeping it.
A couple questions, if I stay with ATT, I will be porting my sprint number. Will rooting the phone or installing a rom cause any issues with the porting of my old number? The Evo was super easy to root and flash roms, and also super easy to unroot in case it ever needed service, which it hasn't yet. Is it just as easy to root/unroot the Note? More concerned about the unrootingt, I am sure I can figure out the root process from the stickies, but I didn't see anything for unrooting, maybe I missed it. Just want to make sure I can get the phone serviced if I need to.
Thanks!

Hey so, I recently switched from Verizon to AT&T. I kept my old number and rooted my note within three days of getting it. Haven't experienced any issues whatsoever and I think you will be blown away once you get hip deep into the Roms that are available. The only problem that I have come across is that I can't stop flashing new roms now.
But, it is super easy, really great guides on here and on Youtube if you're the visual type. I don't think you'll regret it. My only advice is just reading through the threads (or at least the last few pages) before flashing just to see the experiences of others and what to expect before you give it the go ahead. The rooting guides have guides toward the bottom on how to unroot and that's on youtube too.
Hope that helped.

I had rooted my evo and flashed so many roms I can't even count. So it's not that rooting/flashing scares me, and I am sure I can figure it out with the guides just fine. I was more worried about voiding my warranty or whatever. More so with this phone then with my evo for some reason.
There is an Odin image somewhere on these forums that will get you back to stock. It's pretty easy to do.
So far, this phone is the best phone I've ever had.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717
yes you can restore your phone to stock if needed (warranty is only reason I can think of). You can do it w/your PC and the stock ROM file as you can see in one of the forum stickies, I think the development forum.
Just get on one of the latest ICS leaked ROMS...I highly recommend the OnlyOne ROM/MOD since it is the based on the latest leak with a few key mods/etc added. Runs gREAt. And has some Samsung Galaxy III add-ons ported (i.e. new Touchwiz UI, S Note, S Voice, tethering). The OTHER ROMS are also solid and have more theming and custom stuff.
Get a PC then use it to Root, install CWM and then install your ROM of choice.
I like staying on Stock stuff and tried to on my Note for a few weeks but there were too many benefits to rooting, etc.
Have fun. Again...the ICS Leaked ROMS are sweet.
The Note, and most Samsung phones for that matter, are among the hardest to hard brick and some of the easiest to return back to stock as a result. Samsung phones are also very easy to root. The Note is no exception. As others have stated, we have an ODIN package to bring you back from everything but a hard brick. And you're not likely to do that so long as you stay on these forums and not the n7000's. That's pretty much the only way people have bricked their devices beyond saving. And even then you can send a hard brick in to some site and save it with JTAG repairs for $50, which is much cheaper than a replacement phone.
Also, in addition to the stock ODIN package, we have a flash counter reset, do ATT will have no indication you ripped whatsoever. People have returned their Note with the flash counter tripped, and had no issues, but it doesn't hurt to be careful. By using the ODIN package and flash counter reset, your warranty is again valid, so you really have nothing to worry about.

Best thing I've done was root and flash this yesterday. The stock experience was driving me crazy (came from a flashed atrix). I say go for it and don't look back. This phone was pretty easy to root and flash.

Alright you all have convinced me. Off to read the root stickies/guide.
This is the method I want, correct? Looks like the other one isn't meant for custom roms, just to gain root access and leaves the flash counter at 0.

No need to worry about the flash counter. There's an easy method to reset it and go back completely stock.
My suggestion: flash cwm, root, flash one of the awesome ics roms, and worry about going back to stock later. Totally worth it.
Flapjaxx'a ROM is what I'm currently running and it's up there for the smoothest and best Android experience I've seen through 3 Android phones and many other friends' phones. It's seriously like iOS/WP7 smooth for me. And great battery life. Wouldn't trade my Note for a damn thing. =].

Either is fine. I use non touch because it's what I used on my captivate and infuse and I'm used to it, it has never failed me. I've never used touch, but apparently it's just as stable. It's really a matter of preference add far as I'm concerned and whether you like using the volume and power buttons or your screen.

Not very happy with my s4

After a few days of playing with my S4 I would have to say I'm not very happy with it. My smart stay setting don't work but maybe a 1/4 of the time if that. My voice commands don't work but half the time and I get a bit of lag from time to time. I've always used the stock browser in the past cause of flash player and now that don't work right, along with every now and then not being able to click links like its lagging but yet the url, bookmarks, Window manager, and menu button work. Plus the battery life hasn't been to great but that may be me being used to the note 2 battery. If anyone else is getting the same thing or knows of fixes please let me know. I have had these problems on fully stock, rooted with stock debloated, and now on rooted stock. Should I just wait and see what roms come out or should I try to return it and if I should return it is there a way back to non rooted fully stock? Thank you for your time.
edit 5/30: i just got done formating the int and ext storage to start from scratch. after that i noticed hyperdrive was just released so i installed that. phone softbricked cause i tried to install the ads mod from the app he has on the rom. was getting missing file errors and i/o error when tring to restore/wipe/install anything. did the no-wipe factory image and had to wipe data and factory reset after to get it out of bootloop. now im back and phone seems to be running great (but not sure about the voice commands and smart screen stuff just yet). i think my problem was i didnt change the save folder for titanium backup to sd card and i had some rom backups in the int. storage. figured this out when i went to make a backup and it said not enough memory. so if your having problems with lag double check your int. storage to make sure you have plenty of space.
Sounds like every S 4 I have ever seen.

Thanks for the heads up! I ran it on my note 2 and loved it. Can't freaking wait!
Glad I brightened things up a bit for you!! Heck I am looking to upgrade soon and am considering the gs4. Been testing the waters in anticipation. I ran one of scotts roms years ago on my Optimus S (moved to the nexus s 4g, to currently the epic 4g touch) and he made a solid rom then, I know that.
I came from a note 2 as well. I can't wait for custom roms. The stock rom Sucks. I miss clean rom and beanstown but I'm sure everything will be here soon because the S series devices always have more development because they're more popular and more of an everyone phone unlike the note which isn't for everyone.

the issue with links you cant click is an bug browser freezing up.hopefully they will fix it soon.temp u can clise tge broswer and then fire back up and it should work.
I wonder in Verizon applied the latest update like all the other carruers did that took care of lag etc...I remember something in early may that the other carriers were getting an update to address the lag issue and since our phones were just released last week...it may be a little bit before Verizon catches up.

The Galaxy S3 was the first android phone that I could say finally solved the laggyness that has been there since the droid. I have an iphone 5, S3, and the S4. The S4, at least mine, is clearly faster then my S3, and the even the iphone (which has always been pinnacle of non lag phones)......can't even compare with the S4 smoothness, and that is saying something.
I hate lag, hated it since the OGDroid, and can see immediately. I'm sorry you're having issues with you're S4, but I really don't know what alternative phone you could buy as of now.....because, if i'm not mistaking, the S4,HTC One or Iphone.....are the only phones you can buy with the least amount of lag as of todays date.
Best of luck to you.
Well I need to do some more testing with the voice command. I went outside today (were is bright) and noticed that some of the clear stickers on the side of the phone were still there. Just not to sure if the ones I pulled off was covering the mic. If it's better from here on out I will definitely feel like a de de deee.
edit: still having a little of trouble but it may have to do with background noises and the phone volume being all the way up.
Tks

Very pleased with the S4.
I'm happy with my GS4. No issues with me. My battery has been treating me much better compared to my old LG Revolution. I haven't noticed any lag on my phone and that's something I noticed all the time on 2.3.6

That sucks. I'm glad I haven't had any issues.
I kept reading posts about the S4 being laggy, so I was a little worried when I picked mine up yesterday. Luckily, I seem to have a lag free version.
I came from an iPhone 5, and this S4 is much faster. Prior to that I had a gnex, and there is night and day difference between that and the S4.
Omg, Clean Rom is coming!!!!!! I cant wait, his roms are seriously top notch, I have renewed faith!!!!

What are you guys talking about here, you can run other carrier roms, what is your hold up? You can run any rom the ATT I337 can, to include sprint and t-mobile roms. you just need to use the loki patch (verizon) within the recovery apps. Smile and start here...Cheer up Charlie!

Bought my G2

Bought my G2 at opening. First one at store to purchase . This is the bes t phone I've ever had. LG did an excellent job. The only reason I will have to root is to debloat. This is the smoothest and the ui is beautiful. If you were debating don't. I came from the HTC ONE , which was and is a great phone, but this blows me away. Battery so far kills the ONE, which was my only complaint with it
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
So far I've had a similar experience.
I cannot wait for this to get root, that is my only complaint so far.
The double tap to unlock really makes this phone.
It is a nice phone, but the fact we may not see AOSP is making me reconsider it. I like having the most recent version of Android as well as the stock Android UI, much better than any theme out there. Even the notification shade on stock is so much better. Oh well, have 15 days to return it, if anything new and awesome about the Nexus 5 leaks I may return this.

What makes you think we wont see aosp? Yes it has a locked bootloader but someone usually finds a way. Just wondering if I missed something and we will be stuck like the gs4 guys.

There is no "fact" yet, barely anyone has really gotten their hands on it yet to even start attempting to unlock the bootloader.
We won't really have a good idea for a few more weeks probably.

I'm just worried about CM as the Optimus G for ATT doesn't have official CM builds.

For anyone else that has one (Verizon model here)
Is it weird for me to say that this is the first time I've bought a new Android phone and didn't really care to change the OS at all, other than wanting to de-bloat it?
I ran CM on all my previous phones, and after using this for a day and all the features the stock OS has, I'm perfectly fine with it.
Maybe I'm getting old

Its better than samsung's touchwiz but I cant stick with it, the mms app notifications are much worse and the stock lcd density makes everything HUGE! I'm running 360 right now but some things like camera are funky.

I run Hyperdrive on both the S3 and S4 and that is mostly Touchwiz. I would be happy just to root this one. I don't need CM or the others for this phone.

This phone has enough tweaks that if I have to stay stock with it, I'm ok. Had the HTC One and liked Sense 5 but coming from a Gnex I really wanted vast improvement in battery live. Got that now and then some.

I am totally satisfied with this phone. Always having touchwiz in the past, this ui just kills it. Its been allowing time since I have been happy with a stock UI. already rooted and debloated and I'm happy. Only one gripe so far. Google play music is not sending Bluetooth metadata to my car. I can live with that.

Picked it up today, and love it! The UI is so much better than TW, I don't think I'll even throw a custom launcher on it this time.

I'm in the same boat pretty much. CM while the development team is amazing is overrated IMO. I have a Nexus 4 and I like AOSP, but I don't need anything but root so I clean up the stuff I don't want on the G2. Too many test builds too many bugs, I'm over it.
If I could get back the stock Android browser and UI I would be extremely happy, definitely nice as is though.
I just wonder if this is better than the Note 3. It looks like a great device tho. I had the Optimus G Pro but it felt clunky and the camera was not the greatest. But the screen was amazing!
I am easy to please. I never had issues with TW. I ran both cleanrom and bonestock. TW is fine. This UI is fine. Root and all that jazz is icing but really isn't a huge deal. It's all android to me.

[Q] S3 dead. Get an S3 or S4? (and some Safestrap questions)

My S3 died when plugging a USB stick via an OTG cable. See here for the issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981582
I'm past the year warranty, and no upgrade until October. This backup TBolt is killing me, so I need to buy a used phone, either an S3 or an S4. I had a couple questions about the S4:
SAFESTRAP QUESTIONS
- I'm guessing that Safestrap chainloads another partition using code written into the primary system partition?
- I'm unclear as to the ROM limitations. Is it just the kernel that has to be stock, or does the ROM have to be essentially TW? Can the ROM be debloated?
- Is it as fast as running the stock partition? (I know it's on EMMC)
- How does multiboot work? Does one have to go into Safestrap Recovery, choose a partition, and reboot? Or is it more like a desktop OS, where there's a chooser at boot time?
- Does the decreased RAM significantly impact app space? Is it imperative to find a 32gb model?
- Can one use the same data/sdcard partitions with multiple 'ROM'-slots, or even the stock partition?
HARDWARE QUESTIONS
- Are the overheating issues serious, or just overblown?
- Have there been problems with the USB port? (I don't want to fry another phone)
- I'm guessing it's hard to find an MDK phone at a reasonable price?
- Anyone remember the videogame "MDK"?
SUMMARY
I mainly use the phone for PIM apps, web browsing, GMaps, and podcasts/music. I prefer a debloated ROM for speed, but don't mind a stock base. I don't nead CM/AOSP, etc. For reference, I run CleanROM on the S3. I use a 64gb SD card for data, so don't need much internal memory.
It seems the only advantage of the S4 to me is the better display. The S3 is plenty fast for me. OTOH, the S4 would also future-proof me. The S5 doesn't sound like much of an upgrade from the S4, and will problably be locked down even more.
Any advice?
No overheating with the s4, I should know. I mean I have 4 of em in my house that my sisters use. Their perfect because when you root them you can get sick android and not all your tells garbage from whatever your carrier is. Bottom line is get and s4 used of eBay then upgrade the s3 you has ace to an s5 when it comes out, if it comes, when... The s5 might just be a rumor. But yes

Wow, didn't know there was an MDK S4 for that cheap. Can one assume that's MDK since it has CM on it?
However, S3s are dropping to $150 since people are getting S5s.
Also, what, exactly, was tasty?

Ooh. Thank you for helping me learn more about technology
I tell people that I'd trade my MDK S4 for an S3 all the time. I just felt like I got better performance out of it all around. CM11 definitely ran better and was more stable on the S3, even in Alpha stages, than even the most current CM11 build for the S4.
Just my opinion though.
And yes I remember the old MDK Sega Genesis game. I loved that game.

So, are you saying the ROMS for the S4 aren't mature yet? As I said above, I run CleanROM. Rock stable but still quick because of the debloat. If S4 ROMS don't provide a stable environment, I may want to stick with an S3.
BTW, the S4 for $235 @ Swappa has been dropped about a foot and has a crack in the glass near the button (not over the screen). It also only comes with a Zerolemon extended battery/case which is twice as thick as a stock S4. One would have to buy a stock backplate and standard sized battery. I'm guessing it's been through multiple owners.
Think it's worth it?

I'd be more inclined to say the ROMs I use aren't. AOSP ROMs specifically. I'm sure many people are just fine with TW ROMs and are perfectly okay with the SafeStrap method. I'm not one of those people and as a result have had stability issues. I'm currently running the final release of CM 10.2.1 because it's much more fully matured, but I still have issues with data dropping from time to time and other general instability. I never had issues like this with my S3, iirc, even on CM 11.

I would pass on just about all of them except those running MDK.
Having KNOX, is a pain in the butt.
I personally would not buy the S4. I have one but would not buy another.
I'd go for something that I could unlock the bootloader.
Right now the LG G2 is as cheap as the GS4 with hardware close to the HTC M8 or Galaxy S5.
If you need an internal SD that won't work. My next phone is not Samsung. Just say no to "KNOX Pox".

Honestly if you wanna mod, roms all that, your best bet Is either a nexus or HTC, as you can unlock HTC bootloader. Or pay full price for unlocked version of s4 :/

Need microSD. That rules out the G2, HTC One, Nexus 5 (off VZW). S4 is the only viable phone in that generation. M8/S5 too expensive.
Most people here harping on the need for mdk are ALMOST wrong, lol. The OP says he only wants stock based roms. That is totally an option with safestrap. Currently your needs sound like they would totally be met with a locked Verizon phone. However, who knows what future updates will "fix"... so there would be a chance that safestap couldnt be made to work on a new update... at which point you would have to choose between updates and roms...

scryan is prescient.
I'm leaning towards an S4 for 2 reasons:
- 1080 screen.
- It would be a shame to have to pay for a new phone, just to get the same old thing. Granted, the S4 is >$100 more . . .
It looks like the TW ROMs have enough customization to keep me happy. It's a shame that Scott stopped developing CleanROM, as that's rock stable on the S3. Hyperdrive sounds like a good candidate to start. Not worried about updates killing SS. I'm sure the devs will find a way around it.
Just waiting to see if the S5 release drives S4 prices downward any further.
MDK S4.
One thing you may not have seen first-hand is just how huge a difference AWS makes.

how is this phone?

i have a zte grand x max+ now but who knows itf it will ever get root, so on this phone how is speaker quality is it loud?and the screen is it bright? and is the phone fluid opening and closing apps etc, after you root it to do some tweaks? thanks
as near as i can tell this would be superior to my Zte Grand x max+, they seem to be same both 720p display, same cpu&gpu, but the things that seem to me off hand would make it better is cpu is 1.2 on my Zte, and 1.6 on this, and this is rootable, but im still looking for opinions from owners of this phone
Phone is amazing. I am rooted with a bunch of xposed modules installed. No issues at all. Fast and smooth operation, and network speeds on MetroPCS are super-fast. I was skeptical about getting this phone, but I am super happy with it. Of course, the battery life is just insane. I don't use the speakerphone much, but when I do, it is plenty loud for me. The screen is beautiful as well. You can always get it from Amazon, they have a great return policy.
I second the suggestion of buying this from Amazon. That's what I did and my 30 day return window is almost up. But I am keeping this phone. I am also rooted and have Nova installed as well. The battery life just blows your mind. I do one long charge on the weekend and that's it. Maybe ten or twenty minutes charges once in a while.
Does it get pretty good cell signal? I'm looking to replace a Galaxy Note 2, which I recently dropped and busted. :crying:
I've been a Samsung user for a few years, but my Note 2 got crappy cell signal compared to the S3 that I replaced (on AT&T, btw, same number and sim card). I was looking at a used Note 4, but don't really feel like dishing out >$500 on a decent used one, and you still can't root the AT&T/Verizon versions, as far as I know. I know you can root the T-Mobile version, but still not too interested in spending the big bucks.
This one's been getting pretty decent reviews for a mid-tier phone, and I'm a fan of big screens (I like to read/watch videos a lot). This one looks like it would fit the bill. I think I just read that Huawei is going to release Android L (Lollipop?) some time in the first half of this year, so that's a plus.

Well, that gives me hope. I'm pretty sure my signal problems at home were phone related. Got decent signal on AT&T with my Galaxy S3 (which I still have), but when I switched to a Note 2, signal went down the toilet. And I would lose signal with regularity in any big box store (Walmart, Target, etc).
Anyway, ordered! I'm hoping some custom roms become available; I'm used to the plethora of choices available for the Samsung phones, hope I can play around with this one a bit.

Love it! I'm in school full-time and I don't have time to worry about the battery percentage, bringing chargers, finding outlets, etc. I need a phone that does everything I ask of it and lasts long as well. As for the specs, yes they aren't great, but it's still snappy and responsive. Almost on par with my sister's Nexus 5. Occasionally there are dropped frames or app crashes, but that's sadly typical of Android. Sometimes I get a bit annoyed with the size of the phone but that only happens when I wear slim or skinny jeans. No, I'm not worried about bending it!
The only real problem I have is with the software. Like I said, I just need a phone that works, and it does, but EMUI doesn't look nice. I could deal with it but the dreams of getting CM11 or CM12 on this make me a bit impatient.

We have a dev working on CM11 AND CM12, but he's been busy with work (*cough* Cyanogen) so there hasn't been progress lately. Also, thanks for reminding me about those big stores. I forgot, I DO lose signal in places like BJ's. I always thought it was because of the building itself though.

It is the building, also - those buildings have a lot of infrastructure between your phone and the cell towers, but some phones have better antennas than others. For example, my wife has an iPhone 5, and she gets a signal in them, while I'm staring at a crossed out circle for my signal indicator. And I don't remember completely losing signal with my S3 as I did with my Note 2, although I would lose a bar or two. I'm back using my S3 right now, since my Note 2 went tits up - I'll check it out next time I'm out and about.

Yeah, the UI is the main thing that had me hesitating. All of the reviews I've read about it list it as a negative - I know I can always install a different launcher, but those sometimes come with their own problems. I think the Android L release is supposed come with the 3.0 version of the UI. I haven't read much about it yet, but I'm hoping it's better than the current version. And, of course, I'll be a happy camper when CM11 or CM12 is released! Not too concerned about it in the interim, though, as I don't tend to get too crazy with the UI customizations.

No, just ordered one a couple of days ago from Ebay - should arrive this week sometime. I wanted something with a large screen, but wasn't interested in paying >$500 for a used Galaxy Note 4. The price point on this is great, and has a lot of decent features. I was looking at the OnePlus One, but it doesn't have expandable memory, something that's a must-have for me.
BTW, you'll probably need ADB and Fastboot - check out the link below:
