[TUTORIAL]How to reinstall user apps (Quickly/Safely) - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

This was created in response to several people asking the safest way to reinstall user apps after flashing a ROM.
**This post shows you how to do it yourself.
**Please check out the second post to see apps verified to work that will perform this for you.
As the title implies, this will show you an easy and safe way to reinstall your apps after a clean ROM flash. I made this easy to do and easy to understand, so experts and new users can figure it out.
YOU WILL OBVIOUSLY NEED TO BE ROOTED FOR THIS.
To do this you will need 3 or 4 things things on your phone.
1. Download the attached file below named "AppBackup.zip". This is the file structure to correctly flash user apps. I built it to only install apps in /data/app. More advanced users may edit it to include system files, but that is beyond the scope of this tutorial (for now).
2. From the Play Store, install a file explorer with root access capability. For this tutorial, I will be using ES File Explorer. (ROOT REQUIRED)
3. From the Play Store, install ZArchiver. this app creates zip and other format archive files.
4. (Optional) From the Play Store, install ZipSigner. This app signs the zip file.

>>ES File Explorer
To enable ES File Explorer's root functions:
Open the app and press the menu key. Select tools, and Root Explorer
View attachment 2547108
Your super User app will request permissions for ES File Explorer. Allow it, then choose "Mount R/W"
View attachment 2547109
Make sure that "/" and "/system" is chosen as r/w.
View attachment 2547110
ES File Explorer is now able to r/w your /data folders

In the file explorer app, navigate to where "AppBackup.zip" is located and decompress (upzip) it.
In the file explorer app, navigate to /data/app, and select all the apps you want to copy.

Then navigate to the "AppBackup" file and post them into data/app.

>>ZArchiver
**Note: ZArchiver's default location for completed zip files is in /storage/emulated/0/archives. You may change the destination in settings.
Using ZArchiver, navigate to INSIDE the "AppBackup" file! If you navigate only to the folder that "AppBackup" is inside, the zip will not work.
Choose the multi-select button.

Select data and META-INF folders, then press the checkmark
View attachment 2547147
Press the tools button and select compress

In the resulting pop up menu, ensure the highlighted values are selected. Press OK.

This will take a minute or two, depending on how many apps you chose. When finished you will have a zip file!

>>Optional ZipSigner
I list this as optional, because the "AppBackup" file should flash fine without being re-signed. But, I will show it to you, nonetheless!
Open ZipSigner and select "Choose in/out"
View attachment 2547191
Navigate to the new zip file you created.
View attachment 2547192
Select Sign the file. It will take a minute or two depending on how big the zip file size is.
View attachment 2547193
When it is done, close the app and navigate to where the original new zip file was (using the file explorer app). You will see one with the same name + "-signed".
View attachment 2547194
This is your new zip, and you may delete the old one and delete the "AppBackup" file if you wish to free up space.

YOU ARE DONE!

Apps that can do it for you:
>> Titanium Backup w/Pro Key.
A Pro version feature will allow you to create an Update Zip file for any backed up app. There are many other features that make the purchase of the Pro Key worth the $$!
>> ZipMe
A stand alone program by JRummy. This program is listed as in beta, but has not been updated since mid 2013. It seems to work, but may have bugs. JRummy's main focal app "ROM Toolbox Pro" has this functionality slated to be included in a future update.
Other useful tip regarding backup of files and data:
-You never know what may happen. So when you back up anything, put it on your external sd card (odin wipes everything internal, including internal sd storage - thanks @Grompy ).
-Any experienced PC owner has lost things and learned to back up to cd or external hard drives. SD cards can fail. I make it a habit to back up my ext sd card at least once a month. My laptop then gets backed up to an external hard drive. Trust me. Don't learn this habit the hard way!

Will this work for apps that require lib files in /data/app-lib/? Like chrome, adobe reader, es file explorer etc..
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk

Yes. I use this method to install tibu and es file explorer after a rom flash, and never have problems.

Check out a new app from JRummy Apps called ZIPme. It is in beta but seems to work great and does it all.

This is very useful.
Frank

Updated. 2nd post now lists apps available to create recovery flashable zip files for you, rather than manually creating them.
<Note3>

Hey guys after losing all my backed up data, I just wanted to warn everyone to make sure that you back up everything to your external SD card when you use odin. I backed up everything using this method and using titanium backup, but both were saving to my internal SD card. When I odined everything was lost. I've since changed my backup location of titanium backup to my external and urge you all to do the same.

This is helpful, thanks.

[Q] root access with ES File Explorer?

Will someone please help me get root access with ES File Explorer?
I was looking for a good file explorer utility with a root explorer feature. I already had ES File Explorer installed and saw that it supposedly has a root explorer feature. Well, I've searched all through it and I must be missing something because I can't find any way to explore anything on my NT except for the sd card.
I've went into the settings, down to the Root settings and checked Root Explorer and Mount File System but this hasn't seemed to help. I see no way to "get to" the root directory. If I try using the up arrow to move up a level in the directory tree, I can't get up any further than the sd card. It just say press again to close.
What am I missing?
Thanks to anyone that may be able to help get to where I want to be.
- Byron
In settings, and you need to set home directory as "/". Then you'll have access to the entire file system.
What tgraves said as I have complete access to my nook with Es File explorer.
duh! That was so easy. Now I really feel like an idiot.
I think my wife is right. Sometimes I can make even the simplest things seem soooo hard...
Thanks for your help guys.
- Byron
Not a problem
I wanted to say thanks as well as I was wondering the same thing today, didn't think it would be so simple as just changing the home
ES File Explorer Root
Good tip.
Thanks
don't worry... this was a great thread to start because i just found it with google and was looking for this answer also!
whoot!
Tell your wife she's always right
Trust me...
If you don't want to change your home directory to '/', you hit favorites and hit the icon that looks like a phone. That should take you to '/'. I think that's what the icon looked like. Anyways it's in the favorites menu.

I had been looking for the exact same thing. Thanks for your help.
I have the little phone icon so I assume I'm in the root directory. Next question - since this is where the additional 12 GB of space is, is there a "best place" to put my files that I don't want to tote around on my sd card? We're talking music, docs, etc.
Also - Is there a method so I can see "/" when connected to my laptop? Would rather move files directly to the root directory than have to copy to sd card then copy/paste to "/"
I find root explorer to be better.
Sent from my BNTV250 using xda premium
in the setting, tick all the boxes for "root settings" then from the "/" directory, you will be able to access the internal storage and others ( sd, 1gb space allowance)
What I meant was, is there any specific folder under "/" that I should put my own stuff in, or maybe create a new one?
B&N put all the reserved free space in '/data'. See this thread for workarounds. Accessing it via USB is another story, so you'll probably need to copy files to the 1gb partition then move it. Another option would be to use Wifi File Manager. Depending on the speeds you get via USB it may not be a bad alternative.
When using ES File Explorer to move music files from /data to /data/media it says "invalid path." When I tried moving it to a new folder I created under /data, it also failed.
Questions:
1. Is every folder under /data locked away from access thru ES File Explorer?
2. Is my only option to store content directly under /data?
Root the Access.
hi..
I have ES File Explorer installed and i want to install other font(.ttf). but when try to copy from sdcard and paste in '/system/font' folder, it shows an error : copy failed.
In Setting --> Root Setting, only first two options are enabled 1) Root Explorer and 2) Up to Root. other two 3) Mount File System and 4) Backup System Apps are disabled.
Also, when I try to check 1st one Root Explorer, it shows an error:
When 'SU Request' dialog popup, please select 'always allow'
can any one help me to install font in my android device?

[Q] how to get apps onto the actual sd card

How can I get my apps to the ad card?
I'm rooted and running the stock Rom with all bloat removed..I will switch to cyanogen Rom when it comes out
Thanx
Rob
You can do it one of 3 ways. Grab es file explorer from the market and download it set it up to your preferences. Look for the menu boxes at the top right and select app manager. Then choose to muti-select and choose which apps you want backed up and long press on one of the apps and select backup.
Or
The quickest is grab root explorer from the market and download it, give it su permissions if your rooted and open it up and select data-app(long press on app), copy whole folder and back out gently, select sdcard and paste to folder of your choice.
Or
Last but not least, Titanium Backup/MyBackup Pro and use these apps to backup anything on the file system you want. Also requires root/such permissions.
Hope this helps you out.
I have root explorer... I dont have a folder called data-app...on my root dir or on my sd....

I'm looking to move all my apps to the removable sd
When you open use root explorer it will open a list of directory files it will look like this (/) up at the top of the phone, this called mount. This the master directory of every file structure of the phone. You want to look for a directory file called data, select to open it. Then find the folder called App in the directory, this where all your apps are located for the most. Then long press on app folder and new commands will arise from the long press, then select copy from the commands. Then hit the back button to get back to your original directory file and then paste to your sdcard placement of your choice.

Same here. Tried link2sd and it worked once until phone was rebooted, then it can't create script.
I found this at www link2sd info/faq:
In order to use Link2SD you need to do "S-OFF" to disable this NAND lock. (a.k.a. "NAND unlock" or "unlocking the bootloader")
So maybe the bootloader has to be unlocked to move apps to SD. ???

Hello Guys,
Hold ON!! Hold ON!!!
You no need to do all that stuff to increase your phone's internal memory. Using Link2SD on L9 for increasing memory is a HORRIBLE !dea.
If you have a Class 10 (at least Class 8) SD Card with good storage capacity then Just Follow Me:-
1. First Download This script file and Install SManager (free app) from the link below:-
Script
SManager
2. Now use a file manager with root access and copy above script file to /system/etc/ Folder of your device.
3. Run SManager, It will start with explorer. Tap on UP Arrow at top left until the first directory icon left only with "/".
4. Now tap on etc-> /system/etc, in list. It will take you directly to /system/etc/ Folder of your device.
5. Find extsd2internalsd-jellybean.sh file which you copied in 2. Step. Tap on it.
6. An open as ... dialog will appear. Tap on Script/Executable
7. Next dialog will appear with some icons and text with it.
8. Now tap on Su icon (Android with crossed bones).
9. Then tap on Boot icon (gear).
10. Now last one, just tap on RUN Button.
DONE
now go to setting=> storage and check the size of internal memory :silly::silly:
this tutorial will exchange your phone's internal storage with external storage.
and all this tutorial is not my work. All credits goes to Roker1, so thanks to him. Just explained it in a simple way that I am using my Self

Okay Let me clear your confusions.
Before copying script to etc folder es explorer have to obtain root access.
To do so, open es file explorer, tap in a small icon with a globe behind mobile, located at top left of ES file Explorer.
A menu from left side will appear, tap on TOOLS option, it will get expanded.
Now scroll Down until you see ROOT Explorer option with on OFF button.
Tap on OFF button in front off Root Explorer. A message or dialog will appear asking to allow root access to es file explorer (if your l9 is rooted & super user is installed).
Tap on allow. Now the off button should change to ON. Thats it, ES file explorer has gained root access. Now try to copy that script file to etc folder and then follow rest of tutorial.
if still you are confused, let me know

Root permission is getting denied because your es explorer is not allowed. to do so i have updated my last answer just chk it out.

Thanks gdjindal! I have some questions.
Does the SD need two partitions? Does this move any system apps to SD? Does it automatically move EVERYTHING else to SD or just apps newly installed after setting this up? Can you control which apps to move and/or move things back to internal? What happens if your SD card fails? Can this setup be uninstalled and revert back to stock? Do apps operate much slower running from SD this way?
Thanks again!

paste the the facebook.apk in system/app/here and change the permission to rw-r-r
Make sure you are ROOTED.
For convenience I recommend install an app named ROOT EXPLORER.
*After installing, Download the Latest Facebook.apk extension file.
*Go to ROOT directory > then SYSTEM > then APP
*Paste your Facebook.apk file there.
*Long press on that Facebook.apk file and choose PERMISSIONS

You are just modifying the current ROM, Not making the ROM.
If you over right with other ROM while flashing you will loose all the modified data.(like making a Facebook as an System App)
After completion I suggest take a backup of your device.
Edit: If you are getting error, then Move that Facebook file to your Memory Card. After that uninstall Facebook, make sure that FACEBOOK FILE IS NOT ANYWHERE IN YOUR DEVICE EXCEPT YOUR MEMORY CARD. If you find there exist any then Delete that.
Now you are clean, Move that FACEBOOK file from MEMORY CARD to SYSTEM>APP and move there.
After file gets moved, just click on it and choose INSTALL.

[Q] Reboot when altering system files

I have two separate issues which I believe are caused by the same thing.
1. When I try to alter platform.xml in the /system/etc/permissions folder via ES File Explorer to enable 3rd party apps to have write capability to the SD card, the edit is unsuccessful and my phone reboots. When I pull a copy of the file to my PC, alter it, and then try to push it via ADB, the same thing happens. I previously used the ADB pull/push method to edit my hosts file and had success with that after doing it while in Recovery, but this time around both ways (in recovery and with the device booted up) result in my device rebooting. For the SD card fix, I've also tried the app that does it for you and encounter the same issue.
2. When attempting to update the SuperSU binary, the update fails my device reboots. This happens with either update method - normal and recovery.
So both issues seem to have the same root cause... my phone will not allow any editing of system files. Anyone have any suggestions?
For reference I'm on a Galaxy Note 4 (model SM-N910T) on T-Mobile.
Baseband version N910TUVU1ANJ7
Android version 4.4.4 (stock ROM)
Kernel version 3.10.0-2796035
Build number KTU84P.N910TUVU1ANJ7
I'm also running Wanam Xposed - not sure if that has anything to do with anything but just fyi.
Thanks
bump... anyone have any ideas?

Is your Phone is rooted? If yes:
place the altered .xml somewhere in your sd card.
1. Install an app called Total Commander.
2. Navigate to the location where your stock file is located.(delete it)
3. Now goto sd card where you placed your altered file.
4. Tap on Icon of the .xml file, You will see a green tick mark on it.
5. When your file is selected. Tap on Copy/Move to Icon.( u will see two files one on one with a blue arrow)
6. Now Click on '>>' button to browse the location where you have to Copy/Move the File.
7. Now Tap Copy if You want a backup placed in sd card of the file or move if you just want one file to be there.

I'm assuming this will end with the same result as when I try it through ES File Explorer. ES has the same capability and I have given it root access already. Something is causing all attempts to alter system files to fail, regardless of root access.

This was not successful. Anyone else have any ideas? I tried posting logs in the SuperSU update failure thread, with the logic that if I get that issue fixed my other issue will be resolved also, but Chainfire hasn't responded to any of the requests in a while.
