I tried really hard to like this phone. Actually, I'm still trying. I paid a lot of money to get this phone and upgrade from my Evo 3d. It does some things well but it has some nagging issues that are really affecting my experience. Here are some of the most annoying to me.
1) My Wifi connection continuously cycles off and on for no apparent reason. Evo 3d never did that.
2) A VERY noticeable lag occurs sporadically during usage. It lasts for about 2 seconds, then registers all the key presses that occurred during the lag.
3) There's a bug when attempting to assign custom notifications to individual contacts. I've tried Ringdroid, and Ringtone Maker, both will create the notification sound, but it won't populate to the list of available notifications that you see from the contacts page. If you click on Contacts, and select a contact, then go down to Message Alert, the notification you just created will not be there. But the weird thing is it will be in the System notification menu. If you press the Menu button(from you homescreen),then Settings, then Device (at the top), then Sound, then Default notification sound, it will be there. This is a frustrating glitch. My Evo 3d never did that.
4) Why is the Camera and Music player disabled during a call? My Evo 3d never did that.
5) My Magazine is a nice concept, but it shouldn't take 3 seconds after swiping up to begin.
Honestly, this is my first Samsung phone, so some of you may have already been aware of some of these issues. But unless I'm just an *****, and someone on this forum knows how to fix all these issues, I think I would have been better off getting another HTC device.
Why didn't you get the one Max ? Heck anything is a upgrade from the 3d . Are you within 14 days?

Go make a folder on sd called media inside make folder named audio inside that make folder named notifications put whatever files in said folder and you have done the old way we used to use mp3

Issue #3 is a bug that has been present on every Galaxy phone since the GS1. A reboot after creating the notification usually makes it appear on the list of notifications from the contact's screen. Double at that which is kinda annoying.. If I remember correctly the bug is only for notifications, ringtones populate the list as soon as created. Also deleting either one of the duplicates to just have one show will completely destroy the notification tone from working.

I read extensive reviews and the Note 3 was (at least on paper) a more powerful device. And no, I assumed I just didn't know how to operate the phone correctly, so I gave myself time to learn Touchwiz. My 14 days went by rather quickly.
Thanx this worked just fine. I had originally been using Astro file manager, but it never gave me that prompt to use a separate file manager to choose a notification. I have since deleted Astro and switched to ES.

Follow the link, very simple process, and then check out the Android development section, plenty of screen shots and info to help you decide. Bottom line is, if you like stock and don't want to screw with your phone, don't root, If you like to screw with your phone and flash stuff, definitely do it!

Any idea how to figure out why my notification shows the rotating sync icon forever even though nothing is downloading and nothing in task manager looks like a culprit?
I'm on meanrom 4.2 s-off & rooted and I used titanium to delete a bunch of stuff like everything to do with weather, wiper, twitter, sense social, flikr.
I'm guessing there's a mismatch somewhere where something I did not delete is expecting something from something I did delete, and it's never going to happen?
I've rebooted and it just comes back and it stays permanent, as in 12 hours so far since last boot. With perfectly good net connection both on 3g and wifi the whole time.

There was an item in titanium called something like htc social manager that couldnt uninstall because it said can't find apk, but it was able to freeze it, whatever that means. I also uninstalled htc facebook for sense but left the market facebook app installed which I don't remember if I did that last time.

Since I posted my fast dormancy hack (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018894) I've noticed two things:
Many people report better battery life
Some people have trouble applying it
So, I spent 20 minutes putting together an app that toggles this setting. It achieves the same thing as mentioned in the referenced thread, but should not require root (can't test that as I'm rooted). It's virtually untested, so please report issues.
Instructions:
* Install & launch
* Status: line shows current status
* Use buttons to enable/disable
* Reboot after changing setting
I hope this will help someone.
Source: https://github.com/jonasl/LGOG_FD_Toggle
I know I should Google it but...when does fast dormancy effect the phone? I am on a fringe LTE/4g area. If I am on the road its LTE most of the time. Does it effect everyone with the device?
Sent from my EVO using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
This FD setting only affects you when you're on HSPA networks. It doesn't affect when your phone will be on a specific network or anything like that. It doesn't change any radio setting, all it does it disable a periodic wakeup which can drain the battery.
It will not help everyone equally. The only way to know is to test with your conditions. If it doesn't help you, revert (enable) and move along.
You rock. I'll report after some testing to see how it works.
Thanks for making this foolproof.

This is why I haven't posted on xda for a couple of years until this week. Guess it's time to go somewhere else for good. Sigh.
What's wrong with reading the linked description?
It's supposed to be Disabled...
With your phone at default settings (you didn't edit it manually already), it should be Enabled.
Press 'Disabled' and restart your phone. Boys and manuals/directions..
The hack is DISABLE Fast Dormancy. So why would you Enable it? xD Just sayin.

Ah I'm not on hyper right now but you have to reboot after unchecking it and I believe he forces it on boot, so you have to find the line in the build.prop that he's enabled. Forcing gpu rendering is often pointless and causes a lot of ****ery with apps. Mainly games.

Yeah I think you're right. Today was my first time tring the game and it did the same to me. Leave a comment in the app store.
So after a little bit of tinkering, I've managed to get M8-esque software keys on my One Max. Now I have set about disabling the capacitive home/back keys, but for the life of me, cannot manage to shut them off...does anyone happen to know the file that I need to edit?
Undertake the following AT YOUR OWN RISK, when it comes to ripping out this kind of stuff I HAVE ENOUGH TROUBLE TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY OWN ACTIONS, LET ALONE YOURS, THEREFORE, I WON'T.
UPDATE: For anyone interested in getting the keys disabled, I managed to finally get them off by using root explorer to edit the contents of:
- system/usr/keylayout/max1187x_touchscreen_0.kl
- system/usr/keylayout/himax.touchscreen.kl
- system/usr/keylayout/synaptics-rmi-touchscreen.kl
All contents of these files were backed up and deleted. Reboot and enjoy!
(I'd tried #ing them, and deleting the contents individually, but it only seems to work when ALL are blanked, someone who actually knows what they're doing can probably clarify if this is overkill)

Well I suspect what made it so very easy was the fact that I was on the 4.4/Sense 6 M8 port that Flyhalf posted a few weeks ago. Since it was an M8 port, I just assumed they'd be hidden in there.
You can get them up with a text edit, or you can go the easy route and use

I have no idea if this would work on stock One Max ROMs, but it's worth a shot.

Hmm, I've been looking into gravitybox, but I can't seem to find any option to completely disable the hardware keys. I do see how I can map double and long presses, but nothing for just general presses. (Although if I could define the length of a long press at a laughably short time, e.g. 1ms, then assign no long press function.....that could be a janky way of getting the job done)

So one of the biggest disappointments I've had with just about all my Samsung Galaxy devices has been the volume output from the external speaker - especially when watching movies.
So, as someone else asked about this in one of the ROM forums, I thought I would share my little tweak with the rest of you, and show how to do it yourself so you can play around with all sorts of volume tweaks.
As is the case with most things, be careful making changes to system files - I am not responsible if somehow you change a setting that results in the annihilation of the entire human race! (but really ... the worst that'll happen is it won't change anything, or you'll crash on boot ... so back everything up, and nandroid)
Process:
1) Download and extract either the moderate, or extreme file uploaded to this post.
2) Using your file explorer of choice, navigate to system/etc/snd_soc_msm
3) Back up the file titled snd_soc_msm_2x_Fusion3_auxpcm (i just add a .bak to the end of it, but moving it to another location works too)
4) Copy/move the downloaded snd_soc_msm_2x_Fusion3_auxpcm file into the system/etc/snd_soc_msm directory.
5) Set the permissions to rw-r-r (errors and crashes if you don't)
5) Hot-boot or re-boot your phone, and boom ... the speaker is quite a bit louder.
This only "boosts" the external speaker, not the headset speaker, or bluetooth, or the headphone lineout.
Alternatively, if you'd like to know how to do this for future reference, I'll teach you! (because tinkering around is how we all learn in the first place, right?)
1) Open the snd_soc_msm_2x_Fusion3_auxpcm file in Notepad++ and search for "speaker" ... you're looking for the line that says "Comment "Speaker Rx device" "
2) Below that you'll see several values under "EnableSequence" ... you want to edit the "RX5 Digital Volume"
3) Change the default value from 66.9% to something like 75% (I used 72.9 for the moderate and 77.9 for the extreme)
Save the file, copy it over, and there you go.
I would caution against going much higher than 77.9% ... you could do some serious damage to the speaker if you go too high...you've been warned!
You can also play around with some of the other "digital volume" values under the other headers .. such as "headset device", etc.
Good luck folks - enjoy turning your amps up to 11!
This worked great! Thank you so much! Extreme distorts it a bit if put all the way up. I know this was bound to happen when tweaking the volume. so im about to try moderate also. But it definitely works.
Edit: Moderate is just right. Noticeably louder! But not that extreme for distortion to be caused. Thank you!

Glad it's working. I definitely hear you (pun intended?) about the distortion thing, but that's unavoidable. I personally only use the "moderate" boost - I'm not that deaf..yet.
You can definitely mess around and increase the volume of the line-out (headphones), and the call speaker .. if anyone wants those, let me know and i'll upload them.

You're 100% correct on all of this. I highly recommend doing all edits like this on your computer. You certainly can do them on your device, but it's safer and easier to do them on your computer.
Plus...you'll learn a lot more when you can spread those files out and really dig in.
So i'm still working on it...just wanted to let you guys know I haven't forgotten. I've tried lots of different things and haven't had any luck yet. It's possible there's some sort of hard-coded limiter to how loud you can make the headphone jack go, but we'll see if I can't work it out. Give me the next 24 hours to keep plugging away.
Plus, gives me a good chance to listen to a lot Gogol Bordello while I tweak sound settings
