[MOD] AOSP Lockscreen on 4.1.2 Rooted - RAZR HD Themes and Apps

I am on a Droid Razr HD on 4.1.2 stuck on a locked bootloader. I cannot stand the Moto Blur stock lockscreen, and I have root. I was able to do enough sorting through the filesystem to make the phone fairly stock, but the one thing I couldn't switch was the lock screen. Finally got around to figuring out the whole framework-res.apk thing, so here's my solution to get an AOSP lockscreen. (There really isn't any other way)
There was some rom called 'Nexesque' which Droid Razr HD users can install with SafeStrap, but it has bugs up the wall and I actually think Moto's stock rom is fairly stable (and even better with some tweaks)
There are still some things I should fix, like if you change to a password-protected lock screen, you will have the Moto-blur lock screen again, depends on if there's demand for an update on this.
-Requirements-
-Must be running JB 4.1.2 stock and rooted
-Be happy
-#holoyolo
Download attached file below!
-Instructions-
I HIGHLY recommend backing up your framework-res.apk before starting the process and install busybox. Turn ON usb debugging, and install BusyBox to cover your ass.
Push the framework-res.apk to your /system/framework/ preferably using adb or something of the sort so you don't run into permission errors/boot loops.
MAKE SURE PERMISSIONS ARE SET TO 644!
If you do run into a bootloop, your phone will still allow for an adb connection if you wait some time. (The boot logo will be there endlessly loading but you can still send commands as root)
If you don't know how to safely push the framework-res.apk, here's a - simple guide -

I don't personally use this phone, my girls is on it. But the mod looks cool and it's great to see development over here. I agree that the stock blur lockscreen is weak! I have managed to tweet to look, but no extra features over here. Sounds like you're in the same boat with the locked bootloader! The stock rom, deodexed and rooted is pretty usable though. If you're looking for some visual tweaks and various mods check out the Aroma Installer mod a few threads down.

AT&T Tether, Unlock, and Root, Backup Apps and Config?

Okay, brand new to Android. Just spent all weekend loading apps, configuring WidgetLocker and Nova Launcher, lots of learning, lots of work. Thought this would have been easier than jailbreak on iPhone - just as time consuming (initial setup I guess is always this way)
Today my Internet connection went down and I realized couldn't tether my phone unless I paid AT&T a tethering fee. I was considering eventually installing a custom ROM (CleanRom?) but frankly even though I'm a tweaker, I'm pretty burned out and Sense+WidgetLocker+Nova Launcher is doing the job for me. But lack of free tethering is a deal breaker.
So I'm guessing I need to unlock and root my phone. Is there a reliable way to do this yet for AT&T HOX+? I assume/hope it doesn't require me to reinstall the apps?
If I'm not going to install a custom ROM should I still create some sort of stock recovery file? Isn't the whole process unlock > root > create recovery > install custom ROM?
I want free tethering but I don't want any headaches either.

Lol, i'm in the same boat as you bro coming from an iPhone 4. Hope soon it can be available for us ATT USA users to root and unlock our phones and when it is possible there is a step by step Noob guide for us. I've seen a Noob Proof titled thread for this but even reading that i'm still lost!!!! LOL Wish it could be made as simple as jailbreaking, download the jailbreak app, simple click of the mouse, DONE. Not so much with Android :crying:
Well it looks like this "Noob Proof" All-In-One Toolkit combined with something called TWRP for *AT&T* HOX+ that just came out should work. But frankly seeing all these posts about bricking phones and apps disappearing, I'm a little leery to be a Guinea Pig at this point.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994961&highlight=at&t
Any veterans here can confirm that this should be "SAFE" ? I don't want to have to do any "repairing" or reinstalling/reconfig of apps. I'll be prepared to do that if I want a new ROM. I do think I will probably eventually cave when there is a CleanRom for JB 4.2 for this phone as I think I will eventually want it to be closer to a Nexus - with both WidgetLocker and Nexus Running, I have sort of defeated most of the purpose of Sense right?
So far there's only one custom ROM, *just released* and it is JB 4.1.1. I personally won't go to the trouble until there is a JB 4.2 ROM. It was released a week or so ago to AOSP so I imagine it can't be too long?

I can confirm this. I used the instructions on htcdev.com to unlock it and the all-in-one tool kit to root it. Just be sure to select the ATT image when rooting. Then you go into the data files you get with the program and copy the SuperSU.zip onto the phone, boot into recovery (hold volume down when starting the phone) and flash it. Then you have full control over your phone.

Forgive the noob question, but when you say flash it, are you flash it, you're not flashing a custom ROM (there's only one available) right? Aside from the free tether and being able to remove bloatware, I see there are also certain apps that require root, is there any specific change you can make that is really beneficial after rooting?
Doing this doesn't make me lose all my apps and settings does it?

The All-In-One works fine, just tested it on my HOX+
Unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone nothing can be done but make a apk backup and save it on the pc to reinstall after unlocking and flashing SU but Llior's recovery he made especially for us AT&T users works perfectly and many can confirm this besides myself so if you want to remove the bloat get it.

Aside from some more flexibility in being able to run apps that require root, and removing some built-in unwanted software, are there any oter specific significant benefits such as battery life performance, or fixing certain bugs, improving certain performance/functions?
Can you recommend which program I should use to make an apk backup. And I assume you lose all settings (unless backed up within application and moved off phone the moved back) and you have to reload all your media files, custom ringtones, etc. correct?

The All-In-One worked great for me on ATT.
Download the HTC software kit from the HTC website. Then just plug in your phone to sync.
After you root, just resync. You will have to redo all your tweaks and the like, but your media is preserved and it does not take long. The Play Store will have a list of all the apps you have both free and paid, just re-download everything.
HTC sense is supposed to back all your settings up, but I have never been able to make it work properly, and I've never been motivated to figure out why.
It's only a hassle the first time...
Once you have everything back the way you like it, buy Titanium Backup Pro, and do a full system back up.
Next time you flash a ROM, you should be able to do a full restore that will put everything back the way you like it, provided that the ROM is compatible with everything.
There are no custom ROM's for ATT yet, so just follow the instructions in the Q&A to turn on tethering for free.

[INDEX] Droid Incredible 4G LTE Resource Index

LAST UPDATED: 09/07/2013
I have been asked to make a resource guide for our phone. In this guide, I will post links and descriptions for all sorts of nifty things for our device. I was planning to make something more ambitious, but time last weekend was limited, as it is this weekend, and I wanted to get this out there for people. I've only listed the ones which appear to be relevant to the most recent update or are actively supported or updated.
If I missed one or you feel you've been left out, let me know!
All credit is to the original creators or uploaders. If you would like your link removed from this index, please ask.
Rooting-Related
So, you want to root your phone? Well, you've got a few options.
Team Fireballas FakeCID Bootloader Unlock - This manual method fakes a non-Verizon Super-CID which allows you to unlock your bootloader to allow new ROMs and a custom recovery. You can't flash different radios or do anything which directly affects the hardware. It's also potentially invasive in that your phone's serial number is given to HTC as being unlocked, possibly preventing warranty replacement.
Automated Unlock/SuperCID/Temp-Root scripts for Windows and Linux - mdmower has an automated script which for those of you who want an automated temp-root to either unlock continue the Bootloader Unlock method or make your phone S-OFF.
DirtyRacun S-OFF - This method unlocks your phone to allow custom software and firmware, including radios. It's also not known to be traceable, and going back to S-ON is very simple.
Facepalm S-OFF - For those of you who haven't already obtained S-OFF, here's another method for you.
Custom Recoveries
Like with the ways of rooting, there are currently 2 custom recoveries available.
Team Win Recovery Project - This is a touch-based recovery which includes all the functionality of the recoveries you're used to which ruined your volume and power buttons.
ClockworkMod Recovery - There are actually a couple options here, one of which is the standard button-killing recovery, and the other allows gestures.
Custom ROMs
There are a few ROMs out there for our phone, some of which are quite nice.
Team Venom Presents: ViperLTE - This ROM is based on the most recent software update, 2.17.605.2. It adds several much-needed tweaks and allows for theming.
Tachyon - A CyanogenMod-based ROM with the newest version of Android.
CyanogenMod - The most popular custom ROM, presently based on Jellybean.
Pizzuto Claws - Interesting ROM which implements several tweaks and has some nice features.
Pacman ROM - Paranoid AOKP Cyanogen
Avatar ROM - Interesting mix of CM10.1 with MIUI theming. Check it out.
JellyBam - A ROM developed without being posted on XDA. Interesting.
miuiv5 - For those of you who love MIUI.
Stock Rooted De-Odexed ROM - For those of you who want a mostly stock HTC Sense experience without all the add-ons and tweaks, this ROM is for you.
Utilities/Scripts
Listed below are some utilities and scripts which provide valuable user experiences. If it pertains to a specific ROM, I will specify and underline.
Hasoon2000's All-in-One Toolkit - This tool provides many essential functions for utilizing your device to its fullest potential. Includes bootloader unlock methods, custom recovery flashing, and more.
SuperWipe - This script allows you to wipe everything needed to flash another ROM with just a simple flash of a zip file.
RegrawMOD Bootloader Customizer - With this tool, you can change the text in your HBOOT to whatever you like as long as you are S-OFF.
Mods
Listed below are several mods that have been made for various ROMs. If a mod is ROM-specific, I will specify and underline.
Sense 5 Mod - Unofficial build of Sense 5 for the Fireball.
ImageSense - This mod allows a variant of the ImageSense mod in the One series of phones.
Jose51197's Infernal AOSP Kernel - Kernel for AOSP-based ROMs.
Jose51197's Infernal Kernel - Kernel for non-AOSP-based ROMs.
SD Card Swap Mod - This mod switches the mounting position of the SD card and internal eMMC storage. You may need to switch everything on your SD card and internal storage if anything saves to one or the other specifically and you want to keep it that way.
3 Button Remap - This only applies to the stock ROM! You can switch the Recent Apps capacitive button to be like the old menu button and get the 3 dot menu button off the user interface for most apps.
Kernel Source
So, you want to make your own kernel? Awesome.
To obtain these files, it's easiest to go to the HTCDev website and download them.
Hasoon2000 also made the kernel source for the original ROM available.
Alternate links for the newest kernel source have been redistributed in this post.
Stock ROM Stuff
Listed below are the stock RUUs and radios which may be necessary in the event something unexpected or unfortunate happens to your phone and you need to return to stock.
RUUs - Posted here are the RUUs which will return your phone completely to stock.
Stock Everything Else - Thanks to Andybones for making a collection of the stock boot images, HBOOT, recoveries, and radios.
Themes
Listed below are the some themes you can apply to your ROMs or custom recoveries. If one applies only to a specific ROM, I will mention and underline it.
TWRP Holo Themes - These themes have been ported to our device. They give your TWRP Recovery a new look.
TWRP HTC Theme - Here is an HTC theme for your TWRP Recovery.
Lockring Mod - While technically a mod, it gives a new theme/look to your lockscreen's ring.
Custom Splash Screens - Andybones has listed several custom splash screens and how to apply them.
Various
HTC Drivers - mdmower has posted a collection of HTC drivers for your consumption.
Really nice IceDragon59! Thanks for doing this.
Can you also include a link to the latest version of my script in the S-OFF description? It includes an option to automatically put your phone in temp-root mode.
nitsuj17's stock, rooted 2.17.605.2 ROM would also be a worthwhile addition.
Also, looks like you got your sticky, you can probably edit the title.

hi there ... finally took my time to register. the ressource index here is pretty cool. i used most of the info in here (prior to its in this thread aggregation) to make my Dinc4G working here in Germany.
Works great, running Viper-2.1.1 fully rooted and s-off :highfive: ... PSM also added for convenience ^^
plz bear w/ me (it's my first non-flip phone ever / 2nd android device)

After or during the s-off thing on this phone what does it mean when temproot is brought up? I have rooted my older incredible but I don't remember seeing what temproot was.
First time rooting
Hello,
thanks for all the useful information you guys provide!
I am new to rooting in general and have never really tried to gain super user privileges on my phone or rooted it. Partly because I was under the impression that until just recently my particular phone "Droid 4g LTE" was not able to get jelly bean on it. Recently I found the post about being able to put jellybean on my phone so I have become very interested in rooting my phone and trying this out. I have run into a problem however.
So far this is what I have done:
Downloaded "Inc4GUnlockV5 (1).zip" unzipped it, plugged in my "stock" phone and ran the script. (I think this was a mistake because being rooted is a prerequisite to this right?) I got as far as the full restore screen and then nothing happened, both on my phone and the script. My phone seems to be working properly and all that changed was my wallpaper.
This morning I attempted to follow the instructions from "Team fireballas FakeCid AUTOMATIC bootloader unlock" page. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1986346) But I only got to the step which states "DO NOT click OK to the restore on the device just yet!
Now type:
Code:
adb shell "while ! ln -s /data/local.prop /data/data/com.android.settings/a/file99; do :; done"(errors will appear, ignore)"
but my cmd screen just kept scrolling "/system/bin/sh: In: not found" So I closed the cmd and when I tap restore on my phone nothing happens (restore and do not restore become unselectable and the screen remains flashing on the "enter encryption password below which is blank)
Sorry this is so lengthy, I was just wondering what I might be doing wrong, and what my next step should be. As I understand it there is no easier way to root this device, is that correct?
thank for any help
Sono

Did you type into the comand line at the end of the script
"(errors will apear, ignore)"?
You had it in quotes, sorry I had to ask.
Timing is somewhat important for this too. Try it a number of times. I had to do this three times before I got it to stick.
Also, there is an automatic script that you can run - download is in the op. It works realy well.

Bricked Fire HDX 8.9 ; Need Stock Launcher?

Hello everyone,
Here is the sad tale:
I recently got my Kindle Fire HDX and immediately started fiddling with it. Got it rooted and installed GApps using KindleFree. I then decided to buy KindleFree Pro to tweak even more. I fiddled around with the custom launcher option and basically bricked the device all within the same day that I got it! I'm not sure what that option changed exactly behind the scenes but I was able to ADB in and noticed that Launcher-release-signed_82046410.apk has a size of 0kb... that can't be right so I figured I'd start there...
First, I'd like for someone to confirm the size of theirs, if it isn't 0kb (which I doubt it will be) then can someone kindly upload that APK so I can load it up and hopefully get this thing working again?
Alternatively, can anyone suggest a way to simply reflash the stock rom via ADB somehow? I never installed safestrap and I don't think it can be installed via ADB. At least not that I've seen.
Thanks!
ok sorry

There are a few Devs still working on a way to flash something from fast boot no ETA means no promises seems the only fix for you may be to call Amazon . And maybe someone will chime in with a way to sideload an app I'm not sure. Good luck
I should have listened to the warnings when people said it was easy to brick! I've been modifying devices since the windows mobile days before android and never once have felt this hopeless! Safestrap will be the first thing I do once I get this running again.
The good news is I still have SU root access in ADB without needing a Fastboot cable. I'm thinking everything else but the launcher loads so it is pretty much fully functional but with no gui. It sometimes will even boots to the lock screen but unlocks to a black screen.
I think I should be able to sideload the launcher if someone can get me the apk.
well

The good news is I still have SU root access in ADB without needing a Fastboot cable. I'm thinking everything else but the launcher loads so it is pretty much fully functional but with no gui. It sometimes will even boots to the lock screen but unlocks to a black screen.
I think I should be able to sideload the launcher if someone can get me the apk.

If your patient somebody savvy enough will come by. and actually I know that I have read that someplace here I couldn't tell you where sorry. And if you're hoping for somebody to drop off the apk for you probably should let them know which firmware you are. Or you could always download the Bin file of your current firmware and exract it. Downloaded to an android rename it .zip and extract
That's a good idea but I don't know where to get the bin file or how to confirm I have the correct one. I had just updated so I believe it was the latest version. I'm thinking it's v13.3.2.1 or maybe v13.3.2.4 it said there were no more updates available so it should be the latest.
It's an 8.9. Don't think I mentioned that.

Thank you for your help! I actually got it working shortly after my last post but got right into installing safestrap. ?
I'll post a write up tomorrow on what needed to be done in case anyone else has the issue. It's late where I'm at so I need to get some rest before trying to write it all up!
Ok! Now that I have a fresh mind I can document the steps I took to correct this issue.
How did this happen to begin with? I think that when I tried to set a custom launcher as default using KindleFree Pro, the launcher I selected was unable to load properly or something interrupted the process. Either way, it either would only load to the lock screen or just sit on the boot animation. I'm thinking the way that KindleFree works is that it replaces the default launcher apk with a link that points to the launcher you want to replace it with (hence the 0kb size). Either that or something got corrupted during the process of changing the launcher. I'm not sure what KindleFree does behind the scenes so this is all just speculation.
Anyways, on to the good stuff. Once I noticed the launcher was 0kb, thats where I decided to direct my troubleshooting efforts. I posted this thread hoping someone would upload the stock launcher for me to replace it with but jimyv gave me the idea to just grab it from the bin. I ended up finding the bin file here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201357190 before he replied with the direct link. The "Download Software Update" link is a direct link to the .bin file. I changed the extension, opened it up and found the launcher apk per jimyv's suggestion.
Once I had the file, I needed to get it onto the HDX. I more or less followed the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588608
Instead of replacing the odex files, I replaced the launcher apk under /system/app/ As soon as it had finished copying over, the device went from the boot splash screen to the lock screen in what can only be described as a magical moment.
Interesting to note: Most people say that if you perform a factory reset from the stock recovery, your hopes of using ADB and having root are gone unless you get a factory/fastboot cable. I actually did perform a factory reset but for some reason was still able to use ADB and did not lose root access. I had used TowelRoot to root the device so I'm wondering if that is a more permanent means of rooting compared to other methods? Either way, I'm glad I didn't lose root. Otherwise I would have needed to wait for a factory cable to be shipped and to root it via ADB.
Fyi that Chinese root method which is posted early on in the rollback thread it will root with ADB only.. And the factory reset thing has not really been consistent throughout each user.. But more or less we have been advising people not to because the chances are greater that you will lose the superuser binaries and you definitely will lose safestrap if installed. What is hard to get through to people is when they are in a boot loop they get in a hurry and start factory resetting and that is not always the best option. Depending on exactly what is going on. Most of the time it is people losing their ADB access and cannot figure out how to uninstall the MTP drivers first then install the ADB drivers..
Good job getting your device back online and thank you very much for the closing write up .

could i use this way to fix my fault at this link bro?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...p-kindle-fire-hdx-8-9-doesnt-able-to-t2816663
I took a look. That's a totally different issue than my issue. Mine wasn't getting stuck on the recovery screen. Sorry.

Can you work this one out?

Hi all,
Putting it briefly....
Factory reset of hdx 7" on 4.5.2
Stuck at Kindle Fire logo
Shows in PC as Internal Storage but just empty folders Music, DCIM etc...
Can get ADB connection (good news?)
That's it....now here's the interesting bit.....
If I use Kindle Fire Utility and try to root using Towelroot the device goes straight go lock screen. I slide to open and am confronted with Towelroot app. Click on Make It Rain but nothing happens.
If I try other things like installing SU it returns with permission errors.
I can also get to the devices settings too. No other apps installed just HDXPOSED and TOWELROOT.
Got me baffled... Any ideas how to fix?
You can NOT use Towelroot for 4.5.2! You must use Kingroot. Read about this, I've no experience with it. From what I've read it's possible it requires internet connection, I also read this could be for optional download of some browser or whatever, so try to disable such options, if available. You should avoid internet connection, or have it as short as possible, to avoid OTA upate from Amazon to 4.5.4.
Yep I get that I can't use TOWELROOT. I'm just pointing out that installing it gets me past the stuck Kindle Logo into the devices settings. Just no other apps or home scree though. Can't lock screen and if I restart the device it sticks at logo again....

Nothing comes to mind. Generally being stuck at the grey Kindle logo is terminal on a device with stock recovery and a locked bootloader. For future reference HDXPOSED is obsolete and may have contributed to your woes. It was never designed for FireOS v4 and doesn't work well on later versions of FireOS v3.
Thanks,
Yet I can get as far as 'Settings'. Isn't there a way I can push an update via ADB and flash....I guess I'd need to install root first? Is either possible?
P.s its not the grey logo its the coloured orange animated one.

Assume you tried another factory reset. Being stuck at the orange logo offers some hope but there is no Rx that I know of.
Obtaining root is obviously desirable. You can try installing Kingroot via adb install and hope it executes (like towelroot apparently does) and continues to completion. If successfully you could try to repair the damage that is preventing FireOS from fully booting.
I recall someone saying installing a different launcher (eg: Nova) allowed their Kindle to boot.
Another path is to place the 3.2.8 rollback file into the root of sdcard and hope it takes.
Thanks - I have had a look but can't see a specific guide to installing Kingroot via adb. There are generic tips and pointers but I want to salvage what I have and not completely brick it - does anyone know where the thread is?
Thanks...

You probably won't find that (not aware of any forum postings). Here's the deal. You are operating in uncharted waters trying to revive an unlocked/unrooted device that got borked for unknown reasons. You are going to have to a bunch of research and take some chances. FireOS can be a bxxch to repair. If the device is under warranty your best course of action is to engage Amazon for an exchange.
Kingroot is a longshot idea which I would not have mentioned if not for your experience with Towelroot. I have no idea if it will work.
Google (or another search engine) is your friend. A couple representative links below that popped up on the first attempt. I have no experience with either site an can not vouch for the content. Just a starting point ...
- Kingroot
- ADB Info
Thanks for your feedback!
I guess nothing ventured n all that!
Its a paper-weight at the moment so can't get much worse.....I'll wander around those un-charted lands and see what I come up with!
Ok, so I've managed to root using Kingroot. Installed Su too. But that's as far as I've got - I'm hoping that there is some way of salvaging this machine now I have root enabled and can get as far as the settings menu?
Thanks...

So you're on 4.5.2 rooted & OTA disabled now? Then try to install Safestrap v4. If it works, backup your stock slot (even if it doesn't work, who knows what it'll be good for), and move it to your PC. As the secondary slots won't work with WLAN atm anyway, you can install one of the Safestrap v4 compatible ROMs, e.g. Nexus, or CM11 in the stock slot, don't create any secondary Slots (yet).

To confirm you are now on rooted 4.5.2 but can get beyond the FireOS settings menu. If you install an apk via adb can you retain enough control to launch the app UI? You can do this via an adb shell command; unfortunately, the specifics are beyond my knowledge. Hopefully someone else can jump in or you can research on your own (if needed).
There is no safe way to repair FireOS directly with a locked bootloader. On many Android devices you would simply reflash/reinstall the ROM. Unfortunately, Amazon neutered the stock recovery environment as you discovered. If something goes wrong you are in a world of hurt. I think there is a very good chance your device can be revived. Just need to proceed carefully and not bork things to the point were you don't get past the grey logo. That generally means you own a door stop.
Thoughts (sorry if these are obvious):
- Keep in mind OTA is probably enabled on your device. Stay off wifi if you get that far; best to use a tether for file transfer, etc. until the problem is fixed. You can also rename the OTA apk via adb ... but your focus should be elsewhere at this point.
- It appears the FireOS launcher is hanging during initial setup (as you did a factory reset). You may find joy by installing another launcher (eg: Nova via adb) which often set themselves as the default when installed. Once you regain some control you can then install Safestrap v4 which is the pathway to other roms or repairing 4.5.2. Be aware FireOS will try to reset the default launcher on reboot. If this method works don't mess around trying to fix stuff. Install Safestrap v4 immediately (you also need to open the app and install Safestrap recovery) so you retain some control over your device during further troubleshooting.
- If a different launcher does not work try going for Safestrap v4. You will probably need to get smart around adb shell commands as you have to launch the UI to install the Safestrap recovery environment.
Thanks all taken in - my knowledge of ADB and its various commands are being added to as the hours go by - never really used it before.
Determind though........!
So, its looking better. Managed to get Safestrap installed and using a VERY convoluted method got into Recovery. After four attempts installed CM11 and have a working tablet now.
What I want to do now is somehow get a stock Kindle ROM running....any ideas?
Thanks again for your help everyone!

Yep - just flash 4.5.2 rom from here (don't use any other - you'll be rewarded with a brick). I strongly suggest you backup your existing stock slot (containing CM11) and reflash that to a secondary slot that you'll need to create. You won't be able to use wifi on the secondary slot but it will give you a rom to boot into in the event something goes wrong with the FireOS flash. Once you get FireOS working in the stock slot you should be able uninstall Safestrap. The operative word is 'should' as the system and recovery partitions need to be consistent for FireOS to boot properly. From what you have shared there is no reason to believe this is not the case - but the risk can not be dismissed. The other option is to leave Safestrap installed which only adds an annoying splash screen on boot but otherwise does not impact performance. What it does do is give you a pseudo-recovery environment which can be quite handy as you have discovered! It's also the vehicle for installing other roms such as CM11, Nexus v4, etc.
Take note of the cautions in the linked OP, in particular OTA. After flashing 4.5.2 you'll need to root and rename the OTA apk before enabling wifi. Amazon is aggressively pushing 4.5.4 which can not be rooted. Don't ruin your day - block OTA (yea - that was stupid).
Thanks so much. Its worth listing the procedures that got me this far...
I think installing TOWELROOT via ADB despite the fact I knew it wouldn't work was oddly the only thing that got me as far as 'settings' from a stuck Kindle logo. Then I had to resgiter the device in order to go to 'new offers' in the books setting to access the browser.....emails......Kingroot......finally Safestrap....boom!

Custom ROM anyone? Or even Kernel? Please share any mods/mod trials...

I've been waiting for a custom ROM, haven't quite learned to make one myself. I've tried finding a compatible Xposed with no luck. The only things I have been able to do are debloat and add Viper/Dolby sound mods that added volume boosts. Please feel free to add any trials and errors you guys have had trying to mod this phone here.

There are plenty of tutorials for making your own rom and kerenel. There are plenty in xda university and an excellent one by my colleague jackeagle, if you want something device specific then it maybe better to add the phone title in your op rather than just adding a tag

As I said on the OP of that thread, check the specifications at the end.
Of course, it is for the MetroPCS version, I make it clear where it says:
Carrier: MetroPCS
And I also mention the twrp limitations and the fix.
Besides that, I am going to start building an slim version (very slim) and at the same time if anyone can provide me a T-mobile/Other Carrier Nandroid I can build slim versions of that for you guys.

That's when you boot into recovery and flash the Substratum.rescue zip and all good, plus, you should have a good nandroid to restore also. So nobody should be afraid to use Substratum, it's perfectly safe if you know your back up plans. Anyone has questions, just reply in this thread and I'll do my best to help anyone.

Yeah, I already had that panned out. My comment was a simple heads up about one of the possibilities.
snafu
starting over from scratch currently. everything was correct and working when i first rooted and progressively i messed up. i have no idea how it got so bad or why Ive put up with it for weeks now. i have several nandroid back-ups if anyone wants a headache. but i think my problem is deeper than just the ROM.
Laptop recognizes my LGMS210 as a LGMS550 when in recovery. Code 10 -broken drivers.... *re-flashed the recovery from fastboot [ADB version 1.0.32 Revision eac51f2bb6a8-android] and laptop gave me access to internal and SD but only seeing 9.95g available (6g for sys? is that right)
Google play is broke af. Nothing will install (error -504) even after cleaning data/data. data/apps .. even after dalvik/cache wipe.... even after praying. Not even apps Ive never installed before. LG smart world ie themes, fonts, whatever gives install error.
cant even install apks i have on SD (error-package seems corrupt)
Magisk wont update from ver 2.*.* to ver 16. begins to work but alas error -1 ?
I still have root tho lol
no super su present
and i have xposed framework API 26 installed but i think when using magisk and xposed modules this whole cluster nut began.
android Easter egg wont even work. its stuck with a fish selected, cant change the food offering. and NO cat has ever came.
Boot-loops 3-4 times if not shutdown properly... ie rebooter app or terminal reboot. i changed the default MPCS boot animation so i can see if its looping or chooching. gets thermo-nuclear hot and eventually boots after 4-5 minutes.
i'm gonna go ahead and re-flash stock FW.
*on a side note i keep confusing my PC software like fastboot and adb for my gf's galaxy tab A. Caught a security error brick when i accidentally used its fastboot for something like to unlock bootloader.... i have way too many devices being worked on at once. eh, never a dull moment.

You're using the wrong recovery if it's still showing the ms550.
Drivers are universal inside of company devices. (LG for LG, Samsung for Samsung) so they don't conflict.
Adb and fastboot are both universal drivers and shouldn't matter for your device. (I'm using the same fastboot I installed for my Galaxy note 4 that I am for my aristo, my V10, my htc desire 610, and my uncle's v20)
Just do what you said and start fresh.
Unlock the bootloader.
Install the proper twrp and remove encryption.
Flash the stock boot partition and wipe data (this is sneakily pertinent if you're gonna use magisk)
Do not install system mods before using magisk.
After that, use twrp's file explorer to remove and stock apps that you won't need.
