I'm about to upgrade to the Note 3 and am seriously considering a smart watch for notifications as the many layers of protective clothing I have to wear will make getting the Note out a John Cleese scene.
I've been looking at 3, the Sony. The g g and the pebble. Obviously the hg is the one made specifically for this phone but I am baulking at the price which is an eye watering £250...about $400 US. No idea why Samsung UK have priced this so high. Might be cheaper in the Euro Zone.
I'm a wee bit cautious about the galaxy gear as mist reviews haven't been great and it looks a bit unadaptable for an android device, were the price lower I would probably go for it.
As I can get a pebble for half the price, and I've been really impressed at the 3rd party content etc. I'm leaning towards pebble + a plantronics pro headset rather than a gear with the guilt in **** Tracey speaker.
Is the galaxy gear as bad as all that?

The only downside ever to the Gear is that it only supports Galaxy devices - but you will be using a Note 3, so it's the better option.
HOWEVER, the Gear 2 is probably coming very, very soon.
Thanks, I might wait to see what the gear 2 looks like, after all if I get a pebble it will likely be the steel one and they recently launched here and costing top dollar.

Pebble. I myself is rocking a pebble with note 3 and it is excellent. Plus new appstore coming on Monday enables u to dl apps much easier. Gear has lousy battery life too...

The SmartQ Z-Watch is another option that I am looking at.
I also have been using my Pebble with my Note 3. Have you had any luck getting the one - handed operation to work when the phone is connected to the Pebble?

Looked at the Sony as well but the pebble does do them on price. I've got a few issues with the watch functionality of the gear. If I'm going to wear this rather than my Seiko sports military watch, a lovely automatic , it has to be able to tell you the time without having to be woken up.
The gear 2 if sold at this price point is probably out of contention for me, unless it is a significantly splendid gadget, I simply wouldn't spend 250 quid on a watch that will date in 18 months, far better to spend half that on a pebble, the sheer volume of 3rd party pebble apps is a good indicator of support, I don't see Sony getting there and like Sony's tablets and phones, its a well screwed together item let down by clunky oem skin and apps.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk
I am planning to get the Pebble in white to match my white note 3, the Pebble has a good battery life, the time is always displayed, and you can put any 22mm strap on it, if the strap breaks on the Gear, then you have had it, as it's not replaceable and it houses the camera.
Go for Gear, if you have come across this far to customise Note 3 you will never be disappointed if you drop by http://forum.xda-developers.com/smartwatch/samsung-galaxy-gear to do what others can not.
You can compare Peeble battery with Gear which only stand for 2 days but what about features and mods to browse Internet, games, gps, video chat it`s like comparing your old Nokia to your new Note 3 which the old Nokia can extend battery to one week compare to Note 3 for only 2 days.
Read the Gear threads to find parts not only strap.

Thanks. I'm reasonably confident at rooting phones, my current htc is rooted. I might read up the galaxy gear forum as you suggest. At the end if the day the issues I have apart from cost are the sort if issues you can fix by rooting which is why I did my HTC. I could always buy a second hand one off the bay and see how I get on. This would also negate having to wait for the gear 2 to come out. I drive an old jaguar and an old Citroen CX precisely because it is tried and tested technology and anything you can possibly have to face with either vehicle has been faced by others who have documented the fix.

Neither. Try a Citizen Nighthawk for something similarly priced. Better yet try a Submariner or Seamaster.

I have the Gear, and I have rarely used it. It's not what I expected but it is a first attempt by Samsung, I am also considering swapping mine for a Pebble especially now the pebble store is going live soon.
Does either watch have a heavy duty 3rd party removable protective case eg like the trident ones for the 'phones? I have several restoration projects coming up that see me in workshops and building sites etc. I want the watch so the phone can live under my protective gear and I will use a platronics headset. I guess the pebble steel might be the toughest option. Can spotify and audible apps extension be mounted on the pebble?

Torn between the martian, the GG, and the sony2, and maybe even the quallcom TOQ. As for the gear, price is dropping, best buy is already down to 250. If it gets to 200 even, I'm getting it.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Just bought a nearly new Gear from eBay. I see that Pebbles are now down to 100 quid in the UK with 2nd hand decent ones coming in at 75. I might buy a pebble as well due to its waterproofing, I'm outside at work a lot in wet Scotland. But I might wait till the pebble steel becomes a bit more available, its the first 'normal' smart watch and the steel construction is a winner re protection

Hey guys
Google IO was yesterday and of course they released android wear, I would love the moto 360 but it looks like I'll have to get a g watch because I really don't like Samsung
Are you guys going to be getting any of them?

I love the idea of the 360, but I'm worried the novelty of a circular screen will wear off quickly and the lack of screen space for notifications will get annoying. I'm a big LG fan (despite getting the Z2) but their watch just looks boring. The Samsung is cheaper, has a higher resolution screen and looks nicer, so loathe as I am to give Samsung any more money after two miserable phones with botched software updates, they might be the option for me.

Also its a watch, Samsung one has OLED display, thus better visibility in the outdoors.
I had two smartwatches...
I sold first (Sony Smartwatch) and still have brand new Omate TrueSmart siting on my shelf...
Just can't find purpose for it.
I have watch, good watch on my hand and smartband to get notifications and I'm perfectly fine with it.
I really don't need another gadget to charge every night and believe me, there's no smartwatch with good battery.
One, max two days and that's it...
I have 8 gadgets to charge every night so I gave up from smartwatches

From early reports it seems it's the same screen as the Galaxy Gear, which wasn't brilliant in direct sunlight (which you can kind of understand in something where battery life is important)
I have a Pebble Smartwatch now and am planning on buying the Moto 360. I can understand how the novelty of a circular screen would wear out and the lack of extra screen space might get annoying but I feel that if we just see it as a watch and a companion to your phone then it should be fine. I personally want the Moto 360 because it's the nicest looking of the 3 watched IMO. It's going to be a device that is on my wrist for the world to see every time I'm out so I want it to look damn nice.
Do you know if the Samsung will be able to play music independently of a phone like the Gear 2 and Neo?
I want a smart watch that I can wear while running that will provide GPS as well as let me listen to music via bluetooth headphones.
Is there such a device?
Thanks

heh, how will anyone ever get used to the idea of charging a watch everyday or at the end of the week or replacing the battery every month.
We don't do it now, have not done it since automatic watches came out, decades ago.
There is no killer app for smart watches as yet.
As far as the OP goes, i will watch this space for another couple of years. Its too immature right now, kinda like android phones back in 2012, ie expensive toys.
Does the Samsung work with non Samsung phones? If you go over to the Google playstore they have both the LG and the Samsung up already but the Samsung says its for Samsung phones only while the LG says its for Android phones.
I'm going to wait until the first few get shipped and see how they fair in the real world. I ordered my Nexus 5 day one and regretted it. Great phone, assuming you're a walking battery pack.

Thank You JKR. I forgot about this device. Did a little research and it looks like it can be rooted. Did you root yours? If rooted would I then be able to use apps such as Runtastic and Google Play Music?
That would be perfect as I use the streaming service for most of my music now. Hopefully be able to save playlists to device.

I still have my Orange Pebble, i dont plan on selling it, for the fact when i go on a short break for 3-4 days my pebble will hold up for that long without having to worry about charging.
I use my original Red Pebble in the shower to control my music. I use my Steel when I use my iPhone since it's the best watch I have that works with it right now.
I've just tried my Steel. It looks so damn sexy. Hopefully the LG won't look like a peace of junk next to it.
I am keeping my original kickstarter plastic Pebble. And the Pebble steel I bought after watching Google I/O and realizing all Android Wear watches are gigantic. I bought an LG watch anyway and I can see the potential, but at the moment I'm not wearing it anywhere in public, it looks embarrassing on my wrist, like a phone strapped to it. I can only barely get away with wearing the Pebble steel, I get comments on that too saying that's a BIG watch you're wearing. I suppose it would be more acceptable if I was a man, but I can't just let all you guys have the best toys!
I'm buying the next smallest smart watch from whoever can make one smaller, possibly might even consider switching to apple though I doubt I would go that far. Pebble steel is it for now.

Yeah, it's so ignorant of the companies to ignore the ladies' smaller wrist sizes. Imagine even that huge Motorola 360! My wife is begging me to give her my Steel once she saw it yesterday. And she's not into tech at all but loving the looks of it. Maybe that will be the deal when I receive my G Watch.
I've got an original Pebble Kickstarter Edition- it still is more functional obviously than my current LG G Watch. I only bought it to play for it for 2 weeks and familiarize myself with the Android Wear platform. I'll be sending it back in a few days and awaiting patiently for the release of the awesome Metal Moto360! It's just too sleek.
i found this watch for around 80 euro online. i am wondering how it has held up this long for everyone else as the guy i am buying it from said he bought it near the release date or is it worth it to add the extra money and get the g watch r
Check the hardware specs.
G Watch and G Watch R are nearly identical.
(G Watch R has the Round Display, 10mAh more battery and also a pulse sensor.)
I orderd a G Watch R from Amazon, but sent it back after 2 days.
Was not worth the money (180€).
Now I bought a "used" Lg G Watch for 55€ in excellent condition.
Totally happy with it.

One thing you left out is the display. The G Watch R has an P OLED display which , IMO, is better for a watch and one reason I would upgrade to it if the dang thing weren't so expensive. (Got my G Watch for $89 at Best Buy with free $50 Play Store credit)
I bought my G watch for 50USD used. Excellent watch. I like it better than my 360 overall. I wear my 360 to church and thats it. Only thing I miss from the 360 is the ambient light sensor while wearing my G watch. I won't be getting the G Watch R or the the Urbane since the only thing I find useful is the screen upgrade ( brighter, sharper, and better on power consumption). Not worth 300+ IMHO. I will stay with the G Watch till a worthy successor comes out that justifies it's price tag.

Yes!
Got my LG G Watch for $90 on Swappa. Totally loving it, and it looks really Geeky. I keep a simple Watch-face and people think it's an ordinary watch, but when I tap the screen, people's mind=blown. With the 5.1W update, the battery lasts me 4 days on moderate use, and this is good, since it used to lasts me only for 1 day on 4.4W. I even put a metal strap on it, so it looks really classy. The fact that it has LCD makes outdoor viewing easy, and there is a very little to no chance of screen burn-in. I don't mind charging it because it takes only 45 min. to completely charge. But the part replacement is really costly.
BOTTOM LINE:Yes, totally worth it.
Just got one last week as an impulse buy. I figured the price was too good not to give Android Wear a shot, and I'm absolutely impressed. Although I did hesitate and nearly purchased the G Watch R, considering both the strengths and limitations of AW at the moment, I honestly don't feel like I'm missing much at all. It buzzes when my messages come in, handles all my voice commands like a champ and the battery sits idle for days when I don't need it. That's pretty much all I expect from the platform, and consider this a pretty good placeholder until some newer generation flies in and actually blows me away.

Why if you don't mind me asking? AFAIK, the G Watch has better specs then the 360 which relates to faster performance and longer battery life. Aesthetics go, I believe the 360 definitely looks better, has the ambient light sensor and WiFi.

I guess. I wouldn't pay that much this late in the game tho. I got mine for $6 PLUS a $50 Google play egift card in November.
I really like the 5.1.1 update but I'm a tiny bit disappointed we don't have wifi.
I just want my theater mode to vibrate like it used to.
I mean I guess if you get a lot of texts or notifications during the busy part of your day, then sure. But I'd say save your money and get something newer.
I just got in on the $50 ATT deal. To me it's worth it. This is my first smart watch, and it does everything I need it to do. I have a TomTom Runner to cover all of my running needs, and I use the LG G Watch for everyday wear. I got both watches, brand new, cheaper than my wife's FitBit Charge, which she loves. Make sure you do your research and figure out what you want out of a watch. You're going to get a mixed bag of opinions. Just get what fits your needs.
found mine for 60€ (in a stairwell I could only pair it to my phone to make sure it worked).
It's cheaper than a Toy Watch.
update 5.1.1 fixed many issues about screen freezing in 5.0.2 so now it's perfectly usable.
finding a good wristband can be complicated as it's a standard size, there is soooooo many choice (right now hadley roma)
$50 guys. Of course it's worth it. G watch for around $50 or some crappy Disney watch from walmart.
I just jumped on the G Watch bandwagon because I found it refurbished for $45. It was cheaper then some of the chinese models and has Google Play and well supported.
I have been looking at reviews and it seems the G Watch is great for a starter watch. The Samsung Models use a Tizen OS and require a Samsung phone.
Things that I wish the G Watch had:
AMOLED display. Makes sense on a smart watch. The Solid blacks would also look better.
Speaker. This is actually kind of a bummer because if I am in the pool/lake, I can reply/dismiss notifications, but won't be able to take a call.
For me, this was reasoning is to help handle notifications. It is a starter watch that is cheap but good. I don't normally wear a watch, so it will probably end up in a drawer but if I end up really using the device, then I will spend the money to upgrade to one that has everything I need. It is just silly to spend $300 for a high end device if it won't be used.
In a perfect world, I want the Samsung Galaxy Gear S to have an Android Wear model so I can use it on my LG G4. That would be the ideal watch.
First post on board ?
At $130 I couldn't resist myself. I had both a first gen 360 and a LG G watch.... I wonder how long I'll keep this.
Same processor as the moto 360 2015 and it's only 129! Why are people buying the moto 360 for 300$?? I'm clearly confused

From what I've been hearing, it's related to android wear 5.1.1, but my battery life has been all over the place. Sometimes I get estimates of 2 or 3 days of battery life and sometimes I only get estimated for 8 to 10 hours of battery life, this is with doing nothing different (watch in idle most of the time with ambient display on.) A factory reset seemed to help though.

I've had a Motorola MOTOActv, Samsung Gear Live, LG GWR, Sony SW3, LG Urbane, Asus ZW, Asus ZW2, then a LG GWR again + an additional Sony SW3. A few impressions, all running stock kernel:
-The SW3 is by far the snappiest watch with no lag. Next is the GWR, a big reason I bought another after I sold my first one. The ZW2 has quite a bit a lag, no idea why. I'll be playing tetrocrate and the watch will lag like crazy sometimes, multiple seconds at a time. No idea why.
-Amoled screens on the rest look much nicer than the SW3 screen. Except in direct sunlight, then the SW3 screen (transflective?) is the only one you can see at all. Great for running outdoors.
-ZW2 is somewhat noticeably thicker than ZW. The low profile was a big reason I got the ZW, worth mentioning.
-GWR and SW3 get best battery life in general. Gear Live got the worst.

Thanks! This helped me to make my decision.
The AW2 does lag a little from my LG G Watch. They all have the same internals so it has to be something with a driver or something.
So i am looking into buying my first smartwatch and the first thought I had was the moto 360. Currently its priced at $269 at bestbuy (waiting for it to go back down to $200) but i wanted to know if the watch itself is worth it. I ask because the Huawei watch is also $200 at newegg for black friday. I was considering the moto 360 more because of the 42mm size since i have small wrists. So, my question i guess is would you all still after a year recommend the watch? or choose something else.
In lower price, as used, for sure.

I got my 42" black gen 2 from DailySteals.com back in July for $149.99. That was a great price. Refurbished but you couldn't tell at all. Came with everything a new watch would. Previously I had a gen1 Moto 360. Main complaints with that were battery life, sluggishness, and a bit too large face. This watch took care of all that. I can go close to 48 hours between charges (depending on which watch face I use mainly). I wear my watch when I sleep so I can use it as a vibrating alarm without waking up my wife/kids. I charge it when I shower and then here and there when I'm at home in the evening. Never have a battery issue like I had before. I workout and run in it a lot too so I got a silicone watch band that I wear most of the time but can easily switch to any of the other two bands I have in about thirty seconds. Love it!
I just picked one up used for $70 on Swappa... this will be my first smartwatch so i'm hoping it will give me a good taste of what AW is like and be an overall rounded good watch for me. Mainly just want to use it to be sure I see notifications that come in since i often miss the notification when the phone is in my pocket. Thanks!

For this price, it's a bargain for the 2nd Gen.
