Hi everybody
I have a Samsung galaxy S4 with MJ7 baseband ,rooted .I realized when I was on MDK that I couldn't check for update and a message appeared to me saying (Service unavailable ,Software update is temporarily unavailable .Try again later) see attached photo . The problem kept happening on MI1 And on MJ7.I searched for a solution but I found nothing except for old versions of android. The solutions I found was saying that I should go to Verizon CS and change the SIM card. Unfortunately, I'm not in th US.
My brother has the same phone. he is with me and never had this problem . I tried to take his SIM card and put it in my phone but nothing happened .
Please Help me ..

Pretty sure it's because you're rooted. Is your brothers phone rooted?

Yeah it's rooted too.I don't think it's because the root coz my phone wasn't rooted when it was on MDK.

No idea then. If everything is stock (other than root) the only solution I've heard of is a new sim card.
Edit. You could always try manually updating to the newest build with Odin.

Everything on Stock. If the solution will be changing the SIM card ,How come it didn't work when I took my brother's SIM (that makes his phone able to check) and placed it instead of my SIM !!!??
Thank u for responding ,,,,

Several people have reported that Software Update doesn't work from outside the US.
I'd suggest just flashing the no-wipe ROM for whatever build you're trying to get to.
It would have been easier if you had stayed on MDK - you could be running Kit Kat now.
Another MDK lost forever to Knox... dang

I have a Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 on o2 uk which i have had unlocked at a phone shop so i can use it in t-mobile. Water got spilt on my Galaxy S3 a few months ago, the phone died but eventually came back to life after drying it out although the screen didnt work and it wouldnt boot properly . I took it to a phone shop who said they replaced some ribbons, its now working fine except the mobile data just doesnt work.
Its currently on 4.1.2 and want to update to 4.2.2 just to see if this will fix it.
I cant update ota because the device has been modified (guessing because of the unlock). Will I lose my unlock if I flash the firmware to 4.2.2 with odin? Or does anyone have any more ideas of ways I could try to fix it.

Hey guys,
My cousin's friend bought him a second-hand Verizon SGS4 SH-I545. Little did he know my cousin is not on Verizon.
I said: No matter we got XXA baby!
So here are my questions:
1. What is the latest firmware that you recommend him to flash? He is currently on: I545VRUFNC5 - which I see as the latest on SamMobile.
2. Is the phone locked in any way? If so, what's the best way to unlock it?
3. I want to have him rooted using a stock kernel, so that he can get rid of bloatware and use Titanium Backup
Suggestions, guides, links are all appreciated
Thank you!

There's so much info there and more so it is apparently impossible to downgrade to bootloader and thus flash?
I just want someone to list it down for me in simple bullet points - not direct me to massive threads that have 20 links in them

Why would we want to type all that over again? Read the sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501
If you won't be bothered to read that, then here's some short, bullet points:
You can't downgrade the bootloader.
You can't have a custom recovery (except for the unsupported Safestrap)
You can't have CyanogenMod.
The only ROMs you can flash are those that are Safestrap and NC5 compatible
You can root using Towelroot
However, please read the sticky at the very least. If you won't do that, you WILL brick your phone.

S4 has alot of peculiarities, depending on firmware series. Once you go past MDK, custom recovery is limited to Safestrap and yet we see people all the time trying to load Twrp or CWM and end up borking their phone. Simple reading would prevent almost all those situations from happening. I know I had my thunderbolt for a couple years and loaded a ton of ROMS on it and when I moved up to S4 it was a rude awakening on what I can and can't do.
There is a lot of info to digest, even for the experienced people. Lately with kitkat many people run into wifi and bluetooth issues. Why? Mostly because they aren't loading right modules that have been discussed countless times.

I totally agree - that's why I'm asking as I'm unsure.
Last thing I want is something going wrong - and due to it being locked I don't want him running into problems.
So from what I understand I can't flash down and then flash back up?
I can however root? But what about unlocking?

OK - so my cousin tried putting another SIM in the phone (T-MOBILE) and he wasn't able to get it registered on network - it wouldn't allow him to do so.
Thus the phone is not sim locked then?
What do I have to do in order to unlock it? That's all I want to do and then root it after that.

No, it is not SIM locked. This is yet another frequently asked question, sadly.
The phone is configured with Verizon APNs. When you install a non-Verizon SIM, you must configure the APN for your non-Verizon carrier. (Settings/More networks/Mobile networks/Access Point Names, use the "+" to add an APN.)
Hopefully T-mo has a band in common with your VZ phone in your area.

Samsung Updates
OK I have the device rooted and running Hyperdrive 17.1. The only issue I'm having is how to block Samsung's constant attempt at upgrading the software. Running a custom Rom with Safestrap on Kit Kat. Anyway to get rid of that annoying reminder from Samsung about software updates???
Thanks

Well if you're on stock Touchwiz you freeze SDM using TiBu. I believe hyperdrive already has SDM removed?!
Are you talking about the Security Policy update? If that is what you're talking about just search for that using TiBu and freeze that....

Recently I updated with the OTA even tho I could not use KIES to update it kept telling me the updated was not available for my phone
I found a way to have it update with OTA, I had to unroot of course, but it looks like the OTA never updated my modem. I'm still on NA3, luckily my phone still work and data work too, except for wifi.
everyone know you need wifi when you reinstall your apps or it may use tons of gb to install all the apps.
Anyways it would be really appreaciated if someone has it, to upload it somewhere. I think it will resolve my issue.

Trust me I tried, even before posting here.
I see there is some custom roms v4.4 that still use na3 and wifi work. im not sure if there is some custom roms with a ne5 modem.
Sorry I know you guys get common stuff like this a lot, and as such I searched for my issue but everything I found lead me to a dead end.
I'm currently using VZW Galaxy S4 (SCH-i545) with build VRUDMI1 and android 4.2.2
I had disabled OTA updates by using a guide about a year ago. I'm needing to unroot my phone and put it back to stock so I can get OTA and move on to 4.4 (I don't know enough about custom roms and flashing to do it without OTA).
From what I read, I need to use odin to flash a tar file while in download mode. Problem is, I don't know which file to get. I've looked at some guides but I can't find a working link for an SCH-545 VRUDMI1 with 4.2.2
Any help would be appreciated and thanks for your time.

Yea, this will update and unroot all in one. Like the post said, if that update doesn't work, then grab the NC2 one. It would be best to factory reset as well.
Folks,
I need help in a big way. I rooted my s9+ International several months ago and had the Renovate Ice Rom on it. It was working fine but I wanted to try out a different rom. The title of my post says it all. Since loading the other rom I have not been able to get it to recognize my T-Mo sim card (tried a new one also) to make/receive calls or texts. I can access the internet just fine. I've done everything that I could think of from doing a factory reset several times to flashing the original stock rom several times, trying 2 internet services in an attempt to "unlock" it. T-Mo is obviously no help and even after flashing the stock rom twice, I sent it to Samsung Singapore thinking that they could help but they want to charge $400 to put in a new motherboard which I declined. It's on it's way back to me.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly welcomed as I've reverted to using my LG V20 for the time being. I paid $1,000 for the s9+! This is the 1st time in years of flashing rom's that I've had this issue and may never flash another rom again due to this.
Help......please.

I looked through his entire thread, even saw some of your postings and couldn't find any mention of my issue. Mind pointing me to the exact place in his tread? Btw, I had his software on my phone prior to this coming up and it worked perfectly.
I'd appreciate it.
Flash the devbase rom. You most likely flashed the detonator mod and that can mess with returning to stock. Also follow the advice others gave and look in tek's thread. Easy solution for me when this happened was to clean flash devbase and go from there.

I'm currently on the stock rom after 2 factory resets then flashing the stock rom twice. I did have tek's mod on it "prior" to the above. Wouldn't all of the above have wiped his mod off the phone completely leaving nothing to uninstall?
I've done nothing to it since all of the above so supposedly it's a clean phone at this point. So based on that info., what would you suggest?
AND, thank you for the response as perhaps you and ddloco are on the right track....

Wiping doesn't eliminate it. You have to properly restore or flash with a rom that overwrites the mod.

As you're vouching for his rom, I'll root and install twrp again and flash his rom. Did you flash tek's mod afterwards as well if you're still on T-Mobile?
I'll get my phone back from Samsung Singapore this week and give it a shot. If it works, how do I get a "donation" to you?
Either way, thanks again for the help.
I can vouch for his rom cause I've run every one of them. If your getting it back from Samsung see if it works fine first. I don't need any donations. Give it to a charity of your choosing if you want. Yes I'm running teks mod on TMobile now. Having volte is a godsend on TMobile as I get to many dropped calls on 2g and hspa.

Samsung told me that they would have to charge me $400 to replace the motherboard (yes you read that right) as a fix which I obviously declined. As soon as it's back, I'll try starting from scratch again via rooting, etc. as you've confirmed about. And I'll let you know 1 way or the other as to the outcome.
