Hi, I modded flappy bird on an ios device. I just replaced that ****ty bird with something better looking.. so my friends liked it, and they wanted it on android. I've been trying for last 5 hours to get it working. I have downloaded flapping bird.apk and unpacked it. I opened assets folder and edited atlas.png in photoshop just as I did on ios device. Then, I created zip file and copied it to my android device, I opened ZipSigner and found my zip file, and set the output file location. I installed it and opened it. It opened, but when I clicked play.. it crushed
What did I do wrong?

Did you decompile your FlappyBird.apk with apktool or a similar utility?
Also, after recompiling, did you sign before zipaligning?

You have to first decompile the apk file with a tool.
There are many tools that gives you this option.
After decompiling, you have to make changes inside the apk files.
After making changes, you have to recompile the apk and sign it and then zip align.
If any error shows up, you have to work on it and solve those before trying it out.
If you have successfully did the above, then the flappy bird will work.
iOS architecture is entirely different from android's architecture.

Take 7-zip and tight click and open it as archive. Locate your pictures and drag your file into it. Install the app and you're done

I have the same problem..
Well don't know if I am decompiling, but I am unzipping it changing the picture and compressing to zip then using Formatter(a tool from a guy in this forum)I make it an apk then using apksigner I sign it and it crashes after I click play.
NOTE:I have made changes to other pictures and it didn't crash.
That is not decompiling the apk. Search for the tuts on how to do this. Also keep in mind that some devs are making the apks non mod able. Meaning they break if they are touched at all.

You dont have to decompile it to replace pictures
Could it it be something simple.... like they applied compression to the zip?

No you don't unless your doing it the proper way. Still won't matter with some apps. They can't even be unzipped without breaking the apk

Hello!
I'm trying to make my own Rom right now. With dsixda's Kitchen it isn't very hard to do so I thought I'd just give it a try. I'm taking a rooted official Update (Version: 2.10.405.2) as my base. Adding busybox runparts, the /data/app functionality, a2sd+, the custom bootanimation functionality etc. isn't a problem. Removing some apps like Maps, Facebook, Teeter (and so on) and adding some like Rom Manager, Neocore or Quadrant isn't a problem, too. But if I want to implement a theme like the Carbon Espresso Mod or a theme I made with the UOT Kitchen I'm getting bootloops at booting the phone. Here's what I do: I unzip the folder (for example a theme made with the UOT Kitchen) and I copy over the framework-res.apk from the unzipped folder to my Working Folder of the Kitchen (to system/framework) and I overwrite the original framework-res.apk.
And NO: I didn't choose a battery mod or a bootanimation in the UOT Kitchen....

I might be wrong but doesn't the new file have to be signed? I know there is a signing option in the kitchen.

It's a system .apk so it doesn't have to be signed.
I can't shed any light on the subject, but here's a bump.
Are you replacing the whole "framework-res.apk" file? If so then you will need to resign your entire ROM. Why? When you change a system file ("framework-res.apk", "com.htc.framework.apk", "twframework-res", "rosie.apk", etc.) it no longer has a matching "signature" for all the files it serves images to. Plug your phone into your computer and open up "ddms" in your android_sdk > tools folder to watch what happens when the phone boots up.
A workaround (The way I do it, it's more fun IMHO) is to open up your .apk files in 7zip (or if you're on a mac BetterZip) and add the images from the themed .apk to your stock .apk. This way makes it so your original .apk has the same signature as your other system files yet has the new images from the other files that you wanted. I've had a lot of luck with this method. I don't know if it will still work if you change any .xml files as I have not messed with those yet.
I've subscribed to this thread so if you have any questions post back here or you can PM me if you want. I'm on XDA all day, every day so I'll try to help as much as I can.

The reason you boot loop is mis matched resource ID's in the public.xml file. If you decompile the framework using apktool after adding your images using an archiver then recompile apktool will update the public file for you which saves you from pulling ID''s for every image. I have a video tutorial of how to set up apktool and decompile framework in my Rom thread. Changing images in app apk's won't cause you to boot loop just messing with the framework will.

The kitchen signs the .zip that you flash when you build it. It does not sign any .apks for you on its own. However, there is an option to sign .apks within the kitchen.
In my opinion, taking all of the images and figuring out how it all works is fun. I feel like I've already learned quite a bit from just digging around and moving files around.
As for the .xml files, you can decompile the .apk and edit them and then recompile the .apk. I'm actually looking into this today. It sounds like some work but hopefully I'll get it figured out.

The variois status*.xml files in the res/layout folder of the framework-res.apk and the status*.smali files in the services.jar.
What? If I want to implement a Theme made with the UOT Kitchen (without battery) I should just copy over those files to my existing res-framework.apk OR copy over the whole res-framework.apk (the new one) and sign it?
EDIT: Just tried it with a theme from the UOT Kitchen and it worked perfectly. I've just signed the res-framework.apk and the htc.com.resources.apk (or whatever) in the Kitchen, flashed it on my Phone and it just worked like a Charm. But I have got a 50% Transparent Notification Bar and all the system icons (Battery and time/date) are still black and not transparent! Has anyone got a idea where to change this? (.xml or whatever)...And does anyone know where I can find the HTC Wallpapers? I want to change them a little bit

HeyItsLou, I looked up your ROM thread but couldn't locate the video tutorial.... do you mind providing the url? Specifically, I am trying to add to the list of wallpapers in a ROM. (I have setup apktool but not sure where/which folder to add my wallpapers in Framework-res.apk Launcher.apk before recompiling/signing). Thanks.
You COULD use the Theme Porter by daneshm90. It will only port the PNG s for it so things like clock colour n stuff will be lost, but it will get you alot closer...

Thanks! But like I've written before in my Edit, I made it. The bigger theme (Carbon Espresso) wasn't a problem, too. I just had to sign the .apk's in system/app and system/framework (the kitchen doesn't do it by itself. You have to choose the option to sign a single .apk and then look, where the system/framework .apk's are...). Works great now!

If you want to cook an App into your Rom (NeoCore for example), then you don't have to sign it. You can just copy it into data/app. But if you want to change the whole framework-res.apk of the Rom, you have to sign it. 'Cause if you don't sign it, you'll get a Bootloop. The framework-res.apk is a very important part of the Rom, so it has to "fit" to the others. There are some ID's which have to match. Otherwise it won't work. That's how I understood it
Another Question: Has anybody got an Idea where to change the things that are coming, when you first start the phone with a new Rom (the "installation" of the Rom)? I wan't to write: "Welcome to DomiKamp's Rom!" Or something like that...

I was curious about this too. I always edit the framework-res of any ROM I flash using a custom set of images I have and have never signed the apk afterwards and it has always worked. Maybe cause I'm only replacing images? I usually do this with framework-res and twframework-res and they both can sometimes grow by 1MB or more. Just my experience.

I think that in order to do the "welcome to" thing you'll have to edit the update-script file. I'm not 100% on it though. Look at a cm Rom and see what all is in there.

ya you are going to need to have the android sdk setup for the ADB and then you will use something like apk manager for pulling, extracting, decompiling, image edits, or xml edits which you can find here:

it is also a GOOD idea to learn to use Eclipse for the compiling of the .9.png files which cannot be just simply edited and saved like a normal .png file can.
NOTE: the best way to edit the .9.png files are going to be with the Draw9Patch tool that is included in the SDK and draw the black lines (guides) this is located in the tools folder and then you use Eclipse to compile .. get rid of the black lines pretty much.

does say to use the classic version of Eclipse.
once you have all of that figured out then you are pretty good. But there are other stuff to learn to like the programs themselves and stuff .. you will have to look on Google a lot .. I know that there isnt anything much there about any of this stuff .. I kid you not .. it took me a good 2 days to figure out how to use the apk manager and eclipse and how to alter the .9.png files. That was from getting bits and pieces off the web and a lot of trial and error .. the support around here sucks so dont expect much.

eh nothing that I have come across or know about.
so if you know ADB and a little with eclipse . what exactly are you trying to figure out?
Right now I'm trying to figure out how to open the APK. I used WinRAR to open the file and now when I try to open it in Eclipse, it just opens WinRAR. >_>

the easiest and the best method is to use that apk manager that I linked in there and use that to extract the apk after you pull it from the phone using ADB
I usually use the adb pull /data/app and adb pull system/app to get all the apk files out at the same time.
after they are out you will put the ones you want to alter (up to 10 at a time) into the place apk here for modding folder and then open apk manager terminal ..
1) type 22 to select the apk that you want to mod.
2) then you will type 1 to extract it.
3) then you can go to the projects folder to see the extracted apk contents.
- usually the images that you want to alter will be in the res/drawable or the
res/drawable-hdpi or res/rawable-hdpi longfinger
- also some of the apps that do not use the .9.png files you will have to find
the image in two folders ... one for portrait mode and landscape mode.
alter the images you want and put them in the original folder.
4) then you will optimize the images which is option number 2.
5) then you will sign the apk which is number 3.
- if it is a system app select the correct option
6) then you will see an unsignedsomething.apk in the place apk here for modding.
7) to sign the apk you will hit number 4.
8) and then number 5 to zipalign the apk.
when you go back to your place apk here for maodding folder you will see that the unsignedsomething.apk is now signedsomething.apk
then you will push that to your phone using the adb/push something.apk /sdcard
then simply install the apk from the phone ... may have to uninstall the original app first.
winrar will not open the apk .. 7zip will . but i rarely use this as I cannot see the thumbnails for the images and cannot optimize the apk with it or anything else for that matter.

Why not do it yourself? There is plenty of TUT's around that help you decompile and recompile apks.

I tried but when i recompile it & push it in system\app with proper permission, after rebooting phone it stuck bootlogo..
The same happens when i tried to decompile DefaultThemes.apk & MusicWidget.apk they both were not installed...
then i searched & found that we have to compress the resources.arc blablablaaa... & signing with recompiling system apk..
Still after giving a lot of tries i dont understand how to use signing & compress resources.arc blablaballl idk..
If you know than may be you can teach

Well, I am a bit on the busy side.... I assume you didn't try my tool then?
To do this manually, you need to first recompile your apk after you've done all your changes. You already know this bit.
Then:
Make a copy of the old apk
Use 7zip to open both the copy and the recompiled apk
Drag the 'res' folder from the recompiled apk to the copy
Close the copy
Extract 'resources.arsc' from the recompiled apk
Add 'resources.arsc' to the copy, selecting 'STORE' compression
Close the recompiled apk
Open the copy and check that resources.arsc has the same size and packed size
Reboot the phone and go into recovery
Mount the /system partition
Push the apk straight to the right folder
Unmount the /system partition
Reboot the phone
Wait for it all to load
Wait a bit longer
Wait a bit longer still
And you're done.
If you've pulled the app from the phone to a Windows PC then you don't need to worry about permissions. That's only when you copy the app to your sdcard or pull the app using Linux.
Going into recovery might not be needed. Pushing system apps while the phone is running can cause some nasty bugs so I always use recovery just to play it safe. You'll need to reboot most of the time anyway to see the changes you've made.
Instead of pushing, you could make a flashable zip. As an amazing coincidence, Tickle My Android can do that too.

Excellent. I'm glad it helped.
Technically, you could use any archival program but it has to be one that lets you add files to an archive without compressing them. I find 7zip to be fairly quick and user-friendly. Plus, it's free which is always a good thing.

I don't know. I don't even know if winrar can do it. That's why I suggested using 7zip instead.
To check sizes, just open the app (again, this is using 7zip) and look at the numbers to the right of resources.arsc. One is the original size of the file, the other is the size it's been compressed to. These need to be the same.

Leme have my hands on some app..
Edit : I tried this but when ever i put it back to sdcard and look at it the app loses its icon ( just a green android logo ) and when i put it in syste\app with proper permission & then restart it doesn't install and even i tried to install as normal apk then it says parse problem..
What i am doing wrong i followed the same procedure above & also the size of resources is same.

Edit : I tried this but when ever i put it back to sdcard and look at it the app loses its icon ( just a green android logo ) and when i put it in syste\app with proper permission & then restart it doesn't install and even i tried to install as normal apk then it says parse problem..
What i am doing wrong i followed the same procedure above & also the size of resources is same.

I got your pm asking me to reply to this. I do most of my android modding stuff during spare moments at work because I don't have the time at home so I'd have gotten round to answering this in time.
I'm not sure what you're doing wrong here. Since you're got my tool installed, try using that first. If that works, then we know that there's something going wrong with the manual procedure and we can fix it.
If it doesn't work, then there's something wrong with the mod you're doing and we need to fix that instead.

So i tried to mod even after knowing that it wont work as before..
So what i did in DefaultThemes.apk is edited the Androidmanifest & string files to change the name & nothing else
is i am doing it editing wrong file and yes how can i use your tool for this?

To be honest, I don't know how to change the name of an app. It's something I've never done before.
I suspect that you've gotten the mod wrong somewhere but unfortunately I can't advise on where that could be.

I own a BB Playbook tablet for about a year now (bought it during the when it was about 200$ because I needed a 7'', the hardware was specs were nice at the time and the company promised Android app support). Regardless of the sanity of my decision the device saves me about 2 hours per day (I use it mainly to read pdf and build an xls database).
I've converted many apk to bar in order to sideload them to my device (not all of these work). Recently I tried Firefox on my Xperia mobile and was quite pleased with the ABP plugin So I tried to convert the apk but both the apk2bar and the Blackberry Graphical Aid Tool complain that the version number is too long...
Anyone knows how to shorten it? In what file is it located? Or anyone up for the task.
Keep in mind I'm not a dev.

Tried the apps from your sig. I managed to edit AndroidManifest.xml. Recompiling (after the changes) doesn't seem to work (the result apk is much smaller... many files/folders from the original FF apk were not in the project folder or compiled apk).
Tried unpacking + zip + sign but this last step is failing. Wanam APK suite keeps giving an error message. My box runs Win7 x64 and at first I only had Java RE x86 7.10... it didn't find Java in my machine and stated signing would not work; after I installed the x64 it gives no preemptive messgae and I progress further but the signing process fails

Hi.
Look at the files in the apk before decompiling it and you'll see that all those files and folders aren't there to begin with. All those files and folders are from the decompiled resources.arsc so it's normal for them not to be there when recompiled, and when you add the resources.arsc, manifest and meta folder from the original apk to the recompiled apk, it will become larger.
I noticed yesterday I had put an old apktool in the folder but have corrected it now so download and try again.
I was attempting to do the same so I decompiled and edited the android:versionName and the android:versionCode . After doing that, recompiling and resigning I was able to convert using apktobar and load to the playbook with no issues......except the app opens to an all white page and nothing beyond that will work! Just to be clear I was attempting to convert Firefox as well. Hope someone has some helpful hints that could fix it!
I have downloaded APKTool and can decompile an .apk. All I see after decompiling the apk is a folder called samli. Now I have used 7zip to unzip the same apk, and now I see all the files. META-INF, system, boot.img, file_contexts. When I go into the system file I see all the other files/apk etc... Now the problem. the res\xml files are not readable with notepad++. How do I decompile or unzip to readable files??
I just saw a new program in developing section, they said that is 100 times better than apktool, it's without cmd if i understood correctly, i didn't try it yet.

I'm having all kinds of problems. I can unzip and make changes to my apk's using 7zip. One big problem is I can not get anything recompiled. I have downloaded 3 or 4 different apk tools. and none of them will recompile to a apk. If I 7zip them back and change the ending to .apk it's not a working apk. Please will someone that has worked with 4.4.x custom roms please help me. I'm having no luck. I would like to now the tools and how to's to get this done.
