Alright so I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 and am currently running CM11 on it, and this summer I am going on a school trip to London. I am already looking into getting the 3 (carrier) unlimited data, 300 minutes, 2000 text plan for my phone (I'll just use Google Voice for calling mostly), but I was wondering if Cyanogenmod unlocks the carrier sim itself or if I need to.. And if I need to will I need to install an app or will I have to go to a Verizon store? If I do have to go to a Verizon store, will they question me about me rooting my phone and not help because it's rooted, or will they do it with no problems?

the phone is already gsm unlocked for international use, you might just have to manually input the apn's, but whatever carrier you use there will tell you what to change when you pop in the new sim

No problem, I'm sure you can search youtube for a video just as good as I can for further explanation, but this is how you get to it:
go to settings app
go to connections tab
tap mobile networks
tap mobile networks again
tap Access Point Names
(never did this part myself before so I'm not positive) when you put the new sim in it will let you hit the "+" button at the bottom of the screen, and that's where you put in the info that the carrier will give you

Alright Thanks for all the help! But sorry to keep bothering you, I've never tried changing sims before so I'm not well educated in this part of rooting, but I went to that section of the settings menu and The access point names option is grayed out. Do you think that is a Cyanogenmod thing or a what? I;m guessing it's CM.

On the stock ROM it's greyed out as well as long as a VZ SIM is installed.

If it is an AT&T branded phone and you have an AT&T SIM card, why would you think that your settings are messed up? Have you rooted your phone and installed a custom ROM? Even if you did, the custom ROMs that are available for the Aria should have the correct AT&T settings.

OK, first I would do a 'nandroid' backup to save your current configuration. Then I would do a Wipe Data/Factory Reset and then see if you can then pick up a 3G signal. Depending on which custom ROM you have loaded, it will either show up as 3G or H (if you are running CM7). If you still can't get a signal, I would take it to AT&T and see if they can figure it out.

Dial *#*#4636#*#* on the phone. A menu will come up. Select Phone Information. Scroll down a little bit and there is a dropbox that says "Set preferred network type:"
This setting should be set to "WCDMA preferred". If it is not set to that, change it to that then hit back to get out of the menu, and see if the 3G works after that. It might help to restart the phone after doing this.
If that doesn't do it, try finding someone else you know with an AT&T SIM card, and try putting it into your phone to see if you can get 3G. If it's a very old SIM card, consider asking for a new one.
Also, double check underneath the battery. Does it say A6366 or A6380?

Sounds like a defect in the phone to me. If I were you, I'd probably re-install the factory default RUU. (Make sure you use the 2.1 one, NOT the 2.2 one. As long as you use the 2.1 one, you will still be able to root the phone again.) If you want to retain your current settings you can take a nandroid backup. After rerooting the phone you can restore it.
If 3G still doesn't work, get it exchanged. Was this a recently purchased phone?

Ok before all that, I just restored the nandroid ,from before when I was told to backup then wipe to see if I'd pick up the 3G, and after it boots up it just starts bringing up force closes of apps continuously... I can't do anything but force close the stuff that pops up.. (it seems to be all the apps that I had pre wipe that are causing the problems... I can't use my preferred launcher or even the keyboard [smart keyboard pro] that I had set, gmail doesnt seem to be working either)
Also this phone is a couple months old, I got it for free because I stayed with AT&T after they acquired the local phone company. It's not a huge problem that I can't get 3G as I can access wifi most of the time, but me and a friend were looking at T-Mobile and saw a joint plan we liked but I knew I wouldn't be able to receive 3G with T-Mobile, I then remembered I had never even gotten 3G with AT&T
I've got the Gingerbread bootloader, Passion ICS, and I'm (obviously) rooted... Everything on here that I've searched said I should be unlocked, but when I gave the Vibrant to my AT&T bound friend, it doesn't detect her network (or even that the sim card is in the phone, for that matter.
The phone works fine with T-Mobile, and her sim card works alright in my G2X, but could someone clarify what's going on here?
If you call or email T-Mobile they should send you the unlock code.
There's other apps/hacks to unlock bit of a hassle but T-Mobile sent unlock for me quick. Bought phone used too, they don't seem to care much about T-Mobile account or not.

You see, my other AT&T friend had it while it was rooted with Trigger rom on it, and it worked fine for him. I'm thinking it's the bootloader that re-locked it, but I may not know what the hell I'm talking about.

Still didn't work.
--Disregard. How do I check if it's unlocked? *#SIMLOCK# doesn't bring up anything.
Rooting, GB bootloader and ROMs, shoudl have no impact on whether or not you are unlocked, IIRC correctly. Use the Galaxy S Unlock from the market. Run it (correctly) and don't freak out about the black screen. It's only like that for less than a minute. Once it is done and rebooted, let your phone settle down.
Go into your dialer and punch in these *#7465625#
It will give 4 items. You want the top (Network Lock) to be OFF. If it is, then you are unlocked.
Don't rule out the fact that your friends ATT card might be bad or s/he might need a new one.
1. Yes, I have run said app correctly. The first time, I didn't have busybox, but I ran it again with it.
2. *#SIMLOCK# is the same as what you typed, it doesn't bring up the menu, though.
3. Her SIM isn't bad, if you read the OP, you'd know that it works in my G2X (what I didn't mention is that she has her own phone which it works in completely fine, as well.
Mostly, what I want to know now is why *#SIMLOCK# does nothing.
Strange. There is a manual way to unlock it using ADB, but it is pretty intricate with high probability of errors.
I would suggest just calling T-Mo and getting them to give you the unlock code, especially if the apps didn't work for you.
Let me know if you want me to give you the link to the manual way to unlock. Will take me some time to find b/c it isn't in the Vibrant forums at all.
I didn't say it didn't work. I don't have another company's sim to test it with, and *#7465625# doesn't bring up the menu, so I can't check it.

I must have missed that Disregard. Odd that the code won't bring up the menu, though. Do you still need to know if you are rooted though? If the Galaxy S Unlock worked (or even the fact that you could run it at all) then you are rooted. Did you grant it SU permission? If so, there is your answer.
Do you need anything else on this other than someone else's non-TMo sim card?

I didn't mean rooted xD sorry, I meant unlocked. It was 3AM and I still hadn't slept.
I have an idea. Maybe you need to set another set of APNs for ATT. Just a shot but Google ATTs apns and the go into settings>mobile network blah blah APN. Hit menu and add new, the put in what you Googled and don't forget to hit save. Back out and tick the ATT one and see if that works.
Worth a shot.
Thanks, I'll give that a try when I visit my friend again.
Thanks guys, it works now
Can you post your steps Please, I have the same situation and it does not work. I also have the Tmobile unlock code but their provided procedure was not work in ICS passion.
just fyi , I have the vibrant , no longer active on tmo , my worked changed to att , so i thought hell why not.
I rooted using superone click ,
I put the ATT sim card in ,
I dl'ed "Galaxy S Unlocker from market" by DaGentooBoy
I ran it and got error , dl'ed the "pro" version
I ran it and boom , worked like a charm , now phone works on ATT just fine.
I hope that helps someone
tried other methods first , but kept getting permission errors
While you had tried to find out , was simcard in your phone? so this one Galaxy S Unlocker from market worked for you?
thanks

AT&T online
All I know is when I got a new sim card and phone from AT&T I went online to my account and set it up from there. If theres multiple numbers on the account click the one you want to upgrade and see if takes you automatically to the setup screen. I cant remember how I got there, but if that dont wont type in "activate new sim card" or "activate phone" in the search questions area. Sign in first though.
actually, pop the new sim cards in your phone and from another phone dial

punch in your number, it should automatically activate

Just pop it in. Make sure you get a microSIM, not the full sized one.
You might also want to install an APN app, like Tweakker, to avoid having to mess around with trying to find the right data settings in a foreign language:

Also how did u guys receive your phones already, pre-order or in-store ?
How are you going to rack up any Verizon charges? The very first thing you're going to do is take your VZ SIM out (do this on the airplane -- stash it somewhere safe, because you won't put it back in until you return home).
With putting in a new sim you will be using that operators data and service. The phone then has nothing to do with Verizon.

Google Play greyed-out my device when trying to download this software, implying that it's not compatible (also, an older international GSM phone I own was NOT greyed out). Should I try to obtain the app anyway (i.e., email myself the .apk file)?
If I DON'T use an app like this, how difficult would it be to change the APN settings once I pop a new SIM in?
Hey guys,
I am trying to send a S4 to friend of mine as a gift... but its Verizon, and there is no Verizon in Europe. I don't know what to do with it so it would be sim unlock and it will work with different networks because I don't know what operator she will be using. The S4 is already rooted and I am trying different rooms. I am out of ideas because even when I put AT&T card inside it seems like it cant connect to network...so it cant work with ours network how in heck will work with theirs. In the end off all of it like a mention my friends is she, but that kind of she that will break it without even knowing it.
If someone would help me out pick the best room for her that will maybe be pure s4 with out a lot of complicated stuff, that maybe would self-update for her and any network friendly?
Thanks
PS. all that crap that Verizon is saying that phone is unlock free its crap. when you out there phone cant either connect to network or have that notification that is not Verizon sim witch is ridicules

The Verizon S4 is unlocked for international roaming. I have a friend who took his Verizon S4 to Europe, bought a pre-paid sim in Europe, popped it in, changed the mode to global, and it worked fine. I use Hyperdrive and have read in that thread about others using the Verzion S4 with European and other international sims. They may have to change the APN, but it should work.

My friend already had S4 from Verizon and when she put her card inside nothing was working... not even text messages... and she had that notification bar still... so idk... cant tell cuz I dint had Verizon phone out there jet.. its my first contract with them and my last I think.. ATT phone are so much easier to deal with..
but for know I need to think of something... for her I know hyper driver but I was using other rom I think google edition with original android? not Samsung edition and it look nice and smooth and easy, something for her but I cant find any room like that with option for international... or I think the main problem is to have option to have APN option so manually I can add network.. for not even ATT cant connect to it...

basically what I need to do to:
1. Make Verizon S4 working in Europe?
2. What rom will be the best for that (self updating, not complicated, could look like Samsung android but I would prefer Google edition for her cuz it might be just easier on long rom)?
3. Does it have to be multi-carrier rom or just the one with open APN option?
4. Any other information I have to consider, since its going to be a gift phone I will not have future ability to look at it at least for know so I need something that might have chance to run smooth for couple months.
Original S4 with nothing done to it, pure out of box. dint work that well, was not able to send messages and they count add new APN. In the end of the story the phone was stolen... so I know I have to make this one work here before I will send it there...

Install a non-Verizon SIM and enable GSM mode. You'll then be allowed to enter an APN.

basically what I need to do to:
1. Make Verizon S4 working in Europe?
2. What rom will be the best for that (self updating, not complicated, could look like Samsung android but I would prefer Google edition for her cuz it might be just easier on long rom)?
3. Does it have to be multi-carrier rom or just the one with open APN option?

"I am not saying u are wrong". Actually, yes, you are. However, whomever tried this gave you bad info, I was tempted to ignore this (ignorance is bliss), but in case someone actually believes you...
My phone is stock, rooted. Verizon Galaxy S4, running ME7.
Here's what I just did (I tried this again just to prove you wrong...)
I inserted my GoSIM (ekit, Jersey Telecom) SIM, GoSIM has pretty good European coverage, good prices.
The phone comes up with a "Non-Verizon SIM" (this SIM card is from an unknown source") warning. Ignore that.
Menu/Settings/More Networks/Mobile Networks.
Tap on Network mode. Select "GSM/UMTS". When it asks you "System select" choose Automatic.
You've got to disable Global mode since that will prefer CDMA, which is still working for you in the US in a VZ coverage area. GSM/UMTS disables CDMA.
Now, click on "Access Point Names". The VZ LTE one shows but is now greyed out.
Click on the Menu soft key, Click on "Add new access point". That's now enabled. (If you try this with a VZ SIM installed, that menu will be greyed out, which is quite reasonable.)
Fill in the APN, hit save. Now you can select that APN.
Mobile data is now enabled. It reads "AT&T UK" as the network for me, which is reasonable since I'm using a UK SIM.
As several people have said, this phone is unlocked out-of-the-box. It doesn't matter what ROM you run, you can use whatever GSM SIM you like as long as the network bands that the GS4 supports match what your provider uses.
I don't know if there's something in the stock ROM that blocks US domestic carriers (t-mobile, at&t); that's possible, as VZ has done stuff like that in the past. That's not what you asked, however. At least in my case, a non-US SIM works without anything special to do.

How am I wrong? By saying "I am not saying u are wrong"? I dint tried it... I dint had that phone in Europe... and I dint plug in card... I said she put hers in and when to some kinds a store... they dint do it... not me... and even by saying that I was not trying to offend you... and that's why we have forums so we can learn and ask questions...
either way that notification "The phone comes up with a "Non-Verizon SIM" (this SIM card is from an unknown source") warning. Ignore that." can it be removed? that phone will not be use in US any time soon maybe in 6 moths.. so I am trying to make it look as normal as it can...
can I use any rom and will that method work? I am trying to get her something with 4.3, looks nice and its simpler that Samsung stock OS...

That's something I can't answer, but it's very possible that custom ROMs won't display that noise. Unfortunately, that'll mean rooting it, installing SafeStrap, then experimenting.

The phone is SIM unlocked, so any ROM will be able to work with whatever SIM you install. In other words, the hardware doesn't have any problem with it, so use whatever software you want. However, I don't know if there's any 4.3 ROMs yet that are SafeStrap compatible.

Wow... Pulling this old thread up to say thank you.
I had previously gotten my phone to work on EU carriers but for the life of me forgot how and have been struggling with this for a few days now.
Anyway, I did some searches in Google and kept running into walls and after a few days of [foolishly] not searching XDA I called Verizon and they told me I was **** out of luck.
Well, here I am, back on good ol' XDA and 10 minutes of searching I read your post which gets my memory clear and I remember to enable the GSM option. So simple.
Anyway, big thanks to you and big thanks to the community as always.

Thanks.
Oh, and don't be "that guy" (i.e. ME.)
I was complaining about how poor coverage I was getting. Apparently, switching to "Global" mode versus "CDMA/LTE"
Gee, I betcha it'll work a lot better with that mode enabled here in VZ-land.
