Phone broke again. - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

This will be the second time sending my phone back for repair and last time they sent me a brand new phone and I lost everything hopefully they can fix my screen on my phone and send my phone back instead of sending me a new one. I love this phone but I have had more problems with it than any other phone I have ever had. But here is what happened. I had it in my pocket as usual. Same jeans I have been wearing for a while and I had just took it out to send a message to one of my friends. I put it back in my pocket and didn't do any moving or anything when it vibrated letting me know I had another message. I pulled out my phone and turned it on from sleep mode and i noticed the inside was cracked. I almost stated crying because it had not been a month from the last time i sent it in and the long time i spent talking to people on the phone and eventually getting a new phone shipped to me. I did get the next day after talking to several representatives and finally getting a new phone. This time I hope is different and I hope everything goes smoothly. It is just ridiculous that a phone this expensive has so many problems. I have a galaxy s2 that I am using now and the only thing wrong with it is the back cover has a crack in it and a little bit in the bezel. Other than that it works perfectly fine. I thought the build quality was way better on the xperia. I guess not. Apparently they are having this problem with a lot of xperia z ultras. Maybe I will get it fixed for free. The thing I hate about it is waiting 7 - 14 days. I am not a very patient person at all. I hope this does not happen a 3rd time. I love this phone so much and I hate losing it for a week to two weeks. It is my baby and I cant go without it. I will miss it while it goes on its trip to and from sony.

Ouch, that sucks! It's bad enough to send it in for repairs once, but twice? Hell no. It's a known fact that some Sony Z devices (not just the Ultra) have some kind of
manufacturing error that causes the screen to crack. It's bad enough to get a device that has this issue once, but you got a new one, and then it happens again? Ouchy!

First of all, I know how you feel, because my phone too had to go on warranty.
But, but, please breath man, you haven't used a single comma in the whole paragraph!
Last but not least, you can't compare two incredibly different phones like the GS2 and the ZU.
It's like comparing apples to alligators.
They're too different in all departments.
And the build quality is amazing on the ZU, but as an enormous phone, it has an enormous screen, and that is so thin you have to take care of it.
My wife has a Z and it's been on the ground more than in her hands, but it doesn't have a single scratch.
This is a 6mm thin phone, I take it out of ANY pocket when I'm sitting down, and if I don't, I don't bend even if I lose a 500 euros banknote.
The GS2 has been an amazing phone, the first of the Samsung rising as one of the world leaders on mobile phones market, but let's face it, you couldn't go back to it from a ZU even if paid.
Well, I sure as hell won't go back to anything that has the Samsung logo on it, but hey, maybe they'll go the Sony way or HTC way and make a glass/aluminum phone, with a build quality of a real flagship.

Mine had the back lifted a bit, and I messed around too much with SetCPU bricking it, so I sent it back and they gave me a new one in exchange.

Lucky guy! My technician didn't do anything. He was supposed to swap the display, but instead, he did a factory reset and wiped fingerprints off the phone. Quality bull**** right there. It's working great as usual, but the screen doesn't like "low" temperatures, but i guess i'll live with it. It's february now, so it's slowly starting to heat up outside.
Service rating: 0/10

By the time I sent mine back it was like a month from the release, and since I bought it from Clove in the UK, but I live in Italy, and they weren't on sale here yet, they simply exchanged it because, according to them, they didn't have the knowledge to repair them yet, and Sony explicitly told them to give a new one in exchange.

How many times would you allow a single customer to return an Evo3d before you finally said:
"Get the F**k out of my store, and don't let the door hit you in the ass?"
Because after listening to all these people complain, and talk about being on their 6th or 7th phone, I just gotta ask:
Hom much of this crap should a retailer have to put up with?
Just Curious.

+10. I would HATE to deal with EVO3D customers, because, for every one I was assigned to help, there would be a much higher probability that I would be losing my job that day.

I'd be okay with one phone return, maybe two (if both were legitimate reasons), but if you come in a 3rd time for the same phone then I'd probably hand you to another employee. If it's giving you that many problems, then you probably shouldn't be using an Android phone to begin with.
I worked at Best Buy and I never cared tbqh. My manager also never cared. Said it was the manufacturer's fault for having issues in the first place and it's better to just do the exchange so the customer will be happy.
I remember one guy got his EVO 4G replaced 6 times. I did the exchange for him each time, I didn't care as long as they were in their 30 days.
I think I would have to ask the person "Dude, you are on your >3rd phone. If you have so many problems, why do you keep buying it?"
I mean honestly, if you are so unlucky as to get 6-7 "defective" phones in a row, perhaps it is a sign from God you are not meant to have this phone. Get your money back and move the hell on. But before you move on, come on to XDA to ***** about it...then move on.
Honestly, I would never have more than 2 bad phones. First one...yeah, I can see it and I would exchange it. Second phone is bad...screw it, I would get my money back and wait for something else I like.
I've only returned my phone once. Only because it came shipped with a crack in the screen. Not cool. Stupid former employer. >_> (that would be UPS)

So, you are all complaining about having something to do at work.....
It's called job security my friends.
The phone does appear to have some quality control issues such as dead pixels, screen crooked enough that it interferes with the blackout, and maybe a loose button here and there, BUT...
Unfortunately I've seen people returning the phone for what I believe are software issues that will be fixed with (hopefully the next) OTA. Things like the camera freezing, green tint in some camera shots, wifi signal dropping, and the phone going crazy when you plug something into the headphone jack are all software related and exchanging the phone will just land you another one with the same problems. In fact, some problems are intermittent so you may think the new one is fine and then somehow "broke" later. Even a weak radio signal and yellow screen could be software.
You can't expect the average consumer to know whether or not a problem is hardware or software though. To them, they were sold a product that simply doesn't work properly. So they take it back. They want it, but they want it to work, so they exchange it. That's not really a consumer issue: it's an issue for HTC. I'm not making light of software issues either, because those are interpreted as defects just like hardware problems. This is really an issue with HTC. IMHO, they released a product that was clearly not quite ready for prime time.
Mike
im a former radioshack employee and i gotta admit... these pplz come with the weirdest problems ever and the craziest stories to get them phones exchanged, mysefl im on my 3rd evo3d, my first one lost 4g completely, second one lost screen sensitivity and it was pressing letters by itself so im in my third one so far is good, so if they are within the 30 days i will exchange it as long as they have a real problem with it, one day i had a guy coming with the phone wanting an exchanged the phone was all scratched up and when we told him we cant cause of the scratches he said it wasnt his fault, that it was raining and the water scratched his phone lmaoooo ... see what i say lolz
I want whatever I spend my hard earned money on to work as expected to. Why should people settle for mediocre build design or software ? I don't care if I have to exchange an item 10 times, if I am paying for it and I'm within a return grace period, you bet I'm going to make sure I'm satisfied with my item.

What do I tell AT&T for return?

My usb started going berserk and thinking it's in dock mode and randomly thinking it's charging when it isn't and disconnecting on the charger. The phone is rooted, custom rom and entropy kernel. I know they ask for all of that in warranty under about phone. What would KK6 be since I'll be returning to stock but not quite yet. Also is there a way I can talk my way into a new phone and not a refurb since I don't see how a clear defect warrants me getting stuck with a refurb phone. I've read on here there is a way but I can't think of where.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
I have never heard of a way to get a new phone vs refurb. I have gotten many replacements for smart phones through warranty, and while they were refurbished they all looked brand new. The warranty still lasts a year from the purchase date or 90 days what ever is longer.
I think you will have better luck getting a new one if you go in person vs phone call.
I have heard if you get 3 warranty replacements within 90 days of each other you can ask for a different phone, like a Note or vivid, etc.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
That sort of sucks... I've gotten replacements for "dumb" phones but they always come with a sticker inside covering imei and it's frustrating since I pay for a new phone. I've heard of the 3 phones and then qualifying for a new one and am considering a Note just for the size/stylus. My first smart phone (HTC Tilt) had it and I like it.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
Just flash it back to stock and take it into an att warranty service center. They can swap it for a new one there. If you do it over the phone you're more likely to end up with a refurb. If they give you any guff at the store just act real offended and uppity, you shouldn't have any problem though.

May not be what you're looking for, but I had the same problem on my phone....USB thinking it was connected and wasn't, screen waking on its own, and other symptoms. Did a Google search, found I wasn't alone and came away with this fix.....
I dipped a small paintbrush in rubbing alcohol and swished it around in the USB port (powered down and battery out of course). Then I used canned air on it to make sure it was good and dry, powered back up and didn't have the problem again.
Now, I already had a replacement on the way, and went ahead and swapped out, so I don't still have the phone, but it worked fine for several days after I "cleaned" it out....even though I couldn't see any obvious debris.....and I rarely ever use the USB.
PS. A local AT&T rep gave me a number to call for a warranty replacement....unfortunately I can't find it right now...but surely a local store could give it to you.

I tried the alcohol thing and it seems to have helped. I'll see how it goes for a few days before calling in.
Can anyone with a stock UCKK6 rom give me the build number, kernel number etc from About Phone? Just in case.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
My SGII was doing the same thing and I used air to clean out the USB port but it didn't help. I did not try any cleaning solution. My phone was actually fixed by a factory reset. Turns out mine was something in the OS or some app combination was going bananas. No issues since and this was back before Christmas. My phone was stock 2.3.4 when all this went down.
But the advise to try and clean the port is good because there are a large number of folks that have corrected theirs that way. But if that doesn't resolve it then try the factory reset (after backups of course). Worked for me for what it's worth.
I had the same problem a few days ago. Running stock 2.3.4. A factory data reset fixed it. No port cleaning at all. So it seems, as others have reported, this could also be a software glitch.

Policy sucks
So I have taken advantage of the 3 swaps and a new model a few years back, actually got away with it twice, though it's described as a "One Time Exception" I had a buggy Samsung Epix WinMo phone, and decided to go HTC and they provided a Fuze (refurb, not new) - Well all the refurbs were a bit beat around, not at all up to the usual standards, and after a couple replacements of THAT, they asked me if I had tried a new handset. AND I LIED! I'm not proud of that, but I pay AT&T over $250 a month, and I DID pay for a top line phone. So they switched me up for a Tilt 2, which in 2009 was pretty slick.
Fast forward to 2012 - I had a few exchanges of my HTC Inspire 4G - A nice phone, but starting to feel a bit less leading edge. I WANTED a SG2 Skyrocket, but guess what? There is no more policy to switch handsets, they must have had too many people playing them for new phone models. I had to have an escalation done, and wait 72 hours for a response. The good new was, they approved me for a switch. The not so good was that they produced a list of what I could choose from. The Note was not on it, and it won't be on any list for a SG2 owner. I was making part of my claim that the 4G on Inspire sucked, had sucked from the beginning, and wanted an LTE swap out. Unfortunately, you don't get to speak with a rep to make your case (which I believe I could have) So they only offered other HSPA+ Models, some a real joke. Pantech Crossover anyone? Are you freaking KIDDING???
Typically, they offer what they consider "comparable" and crap-o-la, they did not consider the Skyrocket comparable. The best options they offered ME, were SGS2, and Infuse, as well as the ok, but gimmicky LG Thrill - Too much of a crap shoot, that one. So I did the obvious and got the SGS2 - I WANTED a 4.5" screen, but was NOT stepping back to the single core, Galaxy 1 based Infuse, as good of a phone as it was... LAST YEAR, LOL!
So the SGS2 they sent is sweet, but I will be making them send as many as it takes to get a perfect 1 (obvious scuffing on the bottom back where it contacts surfaces when put down on it's back.) They are going to wish that gave me a Skyrocket, LOL! Because I can claim defect until I get a perfect one. If they stop me for "slight wear and tear" I will switch up and claim something else is wrong. Dead pixel, capacitive button failure, I can come up with stuff all the live long day, mother ****ers! As I say, they probably should have sent me a Galaxy, heck A NOTE, even!
Just remember, all the Support Rep, and then Warranty Rep after that can do is exchange same for same, and refurb only. With the heavy use of plastics, the Samsung does not translate to a good refurb, the way the Aluminum Inspire did. Sigh. So it's a lot of work, but it's up to you. I may ask if I can pay the difference to step up to the Note, hehe.

2 visible white dot on the bottom of the lcd screen

-sigh- almost 4 weeks of ownership and already having an issue. I just noticed these 2 highly visible white dots (to the left) just above of the capacitive buttons on my lcd. Only visible on white background though but i call tmo and instructed me to get to a local store so they can have one of the reps to look at it before replacement (awesome). I'll take a pic of it later prior to visiting the store.
sorry for the image quality but here it is. I tried taking a few shots of and this happened to be the best shot. What do you guys think caused this?

yeah its those 2 highly visible glares or dot when you look really close to it.. i've taken it using my digital camera (which obviously takes crappy image btw) and although it may be hard to see by others on the monitor - it is really visible in person. I'm still a little confused as to how this developed.

it's been taken care of and the replacement device is on its way... thankfully it was still covered by warranty. Not sure why it wouldn't be since i just got the phone 4 weeks ago lol
which leads me to my next question.... In regards to warranty that is. Is it worth it to add a PHP (Premium Handset Protection) bundle? I mean, i remember when it used to be $5.99 (i believe) and i just noticed after ordering a replacement device - Tmo added that feature on my plan. Current cost is $7.99 which is still not bad but is it really worth it shelling out 8 bucks for something that can be prevented? I'm pretty anal when it comes to protecting my device (thanks to protective TPU case) and i hardly drop it by accident. However, "****" does happen to anyone when you least expect it. What do you guys think?
It can be worth it in case something happens like theft or out of warranty. But generally they offer you crap and try to say it's comparable.
Did they say you still have option for insurance? Generally unless you get it when the phone was new you can't add it on later

That's what i'm thinking but no, the rep never said anything or made any suggestions as far as adding it on my plan. I check my account frequently and that was the only time i discovered that it was added the day the replacement transaction was made. However, she did mention that even though my device was still covered by warranty, i was charged with $20 for device exchange since i didn't have the PHP feature added to my plan versus $5 bucks if i had it. -shrugs- eh its whatever. Atleast i know i'll have a brand spanking new device in a couple of days and HOPEFULLY.. yes.. hopefully... the annoying screen bleed on the bottom (normal build issue) with the device won't have it. lol
i just started a 2 year with tmobile and got the amaze for free. im wondering if this was a bad idea. i dont like the one phone because it lacks a dedicated camera button and some other stuff I dont like about it (its too thin actually). worst case I cancel for 200 and use this phone on straight talk until a better phone comes out I can start a new 2 year with.

that's a good point too... I too recently just switched from Individual plan to family plan (even though I'm the only one who's truly going to be using both devices) because i wanted this device (amaze) ever since its debut. Not a fan of One series either because of.. well.. a few things that i've come to expect on a high end device which lacks of... availability to expand storage, option to pull battery, dedicated cam shutter. To stay on point - isn't there a policy or something that after you cancelled your service there's a 1-3 month waiting period again before you can sign up???.. -shrugs-

Advice on RMA

I've been reading through the RMA pieces and they are long and really don't end with good notes, but does anybody know of an escalation process for the Texas RMA center? I'm on my second go around with them after having the tablet since Feb where now I can't use it for more than 30 minutes without it locking up and / or rebooting and once it starts, it gets progressively worse until it just locks up and reboots at the first boot screen. It's happened both times with the tech support (so they even said it's not working right) even trying to go into the boot loader and doing a reset there and freezing up before I can even navigate over to do it).
Needless to say, the repair status is, "Product repair is in progress.-[WF9] Wait for Customer Confirmation-No Trouble Found". They haven't contacted me yet and really the trouble was found / seen by the tech on the phone. I use it for work non-stop (well, when I have it, back to pen and pencil now and explaining why I'm without it yet again) so I really need it fixed. Anybody have a way to escalate it? I really want it back and working. I loved it when it worked but now I feel that I was sold a defective product and they really don't have a repair department above if something is physically cracked.

Where did you purchase your Prime from? I might consider talking to the retailer, particularly if it was Amazon. I would explain to them the details of your situation and ask if they can do an exchange. You'd be happy to exchange this one for a working one, right?
I'm reasonably happy with my Prime. The features make Apple's product look like a toy. The post-sale support from ASUS, on the other hand, is absolutely horrible! After losing a couple of rubber feet on my dock, I sent a support REQ asking if I could get a set of rubber feet. They wanted me to do an RMA.
It's worth a try, asking your retailer...

Email Hai ([email protected]) he is the technical manager that was listed as a contact on the forums by Gary Key. He is not in Texas, he is in California however I worked with him on 3 separate RMA's for my prime and the guy is great. If you email him with the RMA number I am sure he can offer some assistance.
Hope this helps.
For anyone who has sent their prime in for RMA: do you recommend removing a screen protector before sending it? Will ASUS likely take it off? I have a Skinomi, and could probably get a new one under the lifetime warranty they have (if I have to take it off and it accidentally gets damaged), but if I can leave it on that would be ideal.
Thanks.

I wouldn't use a protector on prime in first place, it has gorilla glass but that's me . It all depends what are they fixing. The cpu or dock? If cpu, take it off and save it.

I sent mine in and got it back fine. Took just about 2 weeks total turn around. I took a bunch of photos of me packing it to prove it was packed. I sent NOTHING but the tablet. Nothing. No case, no SD card, no charger, no GPS dongle, no screen saver, no nothing.
But now, I am over this tablet and seriously don't even use it. Going to likely sell it.

I'm actually sending it in to see if I can get the camera fixed under warranty (even though I'm unlocked...fingers crossed). Then I am probably going to sell it. I figure I'd have better luck selling it with a working camera, so worth a shot to see if they'll fix it.

In case anyone cares, I have some good news for anyone considering an RMA for the camera. Just got mine back after sending it in, and upon first inspection it looks like 1) they replaced the camera module (works now!), and 2) I am still unlocked! I'll report back after trying to install Hairy Wookie Bean (or whatever it's called these days).

So you were able to send it in without paying for repairs? They want to charge me 200 for it....

returning phone to store with custom rom

I purchased a Z Ultra about a week ago and don't think it's going to work out. It's too HUGE. I will probably exchange it for a Z1, but I want to know:
Will it be a problem to have CM installed on it? Will they reject the return upon receiving it at the facility?
I don't want to take any chances...but I also don't want to go through the hassle of taking it back to stock...

They won't accept it with any trace of root or custom rom as it voids the warranty. You'll need to flash complete stock, it's pretty straightforward.

What Spyder said.
Also, why don't you just wait a couple of weeks for the Z2? It looks so much nicer than the Z1. Even I would get it! (but i won't).

Hmm...I didn't back up the TA partition. I hope I'm not screwed.
Regarding the Z2, I would totally go for it, but 1) I'm getting a pretty good deal on the Z1...20% off the sale price and 2) I'm not sure I have time to wait for its release and 3) it's going to be very expensive. I hate paying full-price for just-released electronics.

No ta partition means no drm keys which is definitely void warranty, i doubt very much they'd accept it back.

Yeah I effed up BADLY on this one.
To add insult to injury, I woke up an hour ago to find 2 scratches on the front screen...my best guess is that the glass of the Z1 scratched the Ultra when I placed the Z1 on top of the Ultra to compare the two earlier today.
So now the software is screwed AND the hardware is screwed! Yay. What a disaster.
This phone is FIVE DAYS OLD. [sigh] If anyone wants an Ultra to mess around with, mine's for sale for CHEAP. PM me or check out Swappa. Thanks for the help guys.

Keep in mind that you likely just scratched the anti-shatter film, and not the actual screen itself. That film it just so soft, it scratches easy.
I say try the phone out for another week...

Yup, he/she will eventually get used to its size.

O very found the xperia z ultra huge, for about a week, now I find every other smartphone tiny and unusable. Any other smartphone with a screen size of 5 inches or above is cumbersome to use with one hand, so might aswell go bigger

I absolutely agree.

I thought most people who bought this phone knew how big it was going to be and that's why they bought it!
But yeah i think you will get used to it..I don't think it's that huge anymore.
before I got the ultra I had the note II. that I gave to my wife and now I see the note II and I don't think can go back to smaller screen size. I could go bigger though.
