This does not appear to be a hard ware issue, I've tried multiple cables including the official HTC one, cleaned the port, phone charges fine, tried multiple computers and re-installed drivers many times.
What appears to be happening is a software issue on the phone side, I would assume is from running a custom kernel, I was using Elengacia 5.3 for quite sometime. Im not even sure what kernal I was using, most likely the one that was recommended with the rom.
Everything works fine but the USB mass storage, it cant even be detected in the boot-loader, Id like to reset all to stock so I can sell my device but that does not appear to be possible at the moment, this just came out of nowhere.
If anyone has even the slightest idea of what I could do, post away.
It would be convenient if I could flash another kernal via CWM.
I can flash roms if I get them on the phone via WIFI or data.

So after searching the vast horizons of XDA I haven't found an answer that really helped me. Nor have I found someone with this distinct issue. I have an unlocked Samsung Vibrant. I have not rooted it. I updated to J16 with that P.O.S. Kies Mini a few months ago. I hadn't noticed this problem until the last month or so but I haven't had time to sit down and curse at my computer long enough or offer supplications to Google until now. I've just been using Awesome Drop to get what few files I wanted onto my phone. I've had enough of that now. And...I also want to update it to Froyo but I can't do that if I can't get my computer to see my phone. I'm running a Toshiba Satellite A205 with Windows Vista 32bit.
I have checked the drivers and as far as I can tell, I'm using the right ones. I downloaded Kies Mini again today (I deleted it after I was finished with J16 because I wanted it as far away from me as possible) and it seemed to say something about downloading drivers as well. I tried plugging in my phone. Nothing new. So, I went in search of drivers again. I have searched and tried a few different ones but nothing has solved my problem.
The phone charges fine from my laptop. It hooks up immediately and charges without a problem. Unfortunately, my phone seems to regard the PC as a complex wall-wart. Debugging on/off, USB Settings on Mass Storage, Kies, or Ask on connection, it doesn't matter. It doesn't give me the option to "mount" as it has in the past. It doesn't do anything except charge. I've seen some people say it's a problem with their cables (I've only got one at the moment) but since my phone charges fine, how can it be a problem with the cable?
Only thing I hadn't tried was a factory reset. So, I sucked it up and tried that. Nope. No change. At this point I'm wondering if it's a hardware problem, not a software problem.
I'm out of ideas. Anybody else?
Well you can always root it, install ROM manager from the market, install clockwork recovery, download the ROM you want to install in flashable .zip format from your phone and flash away. A new ROM might fix your USB issue.
If you don't want to root it, see if you can get into download mode, and flash a new ROM using Odin. I would check with a different cable first, just to be sure that's not the problem though. It might save you some headaches.
If it was me, I would just root it and load a custom 2.2 ROM. I would also get Titanium Backup from the market and backup my apps and would do a nandroid backup from recovery before flashing anything new just to be on the safe side.
There's some good info on how to do most of that in this sticky post.

I just bought a pre-rooted fascinate. The dude i bought it from said he had MIUI flashed on it, and I trusted the guy. The rom was a TSM Voodoo kernel based Rom. I was dumb and didn't read up on Voodoo and MTD. Since I know that MIUI and CM7 are very similar, I flashed CM7 on top of the rom running.
Everything runs fine, except USB DOES NOT WORK! I cant even enter download mode to use Odin. Is there a way to get this fixed?
Thanks in advance!
The Mtd based roms such as cm7 and miui actually use the nexus drivers of I am remembering right. If I were near my computer I would gram you a link to one of the threads

It is not the fact that the computer will not recognize the phone.
The phone itself does not recognize the fact that a usb is plugged in even with the usb debugging on it does not pop up with any usb commands on the phone. usb mass storage will not come up and because the phone will not recognize the usb i am not able to get the phone to access download mode.
couple simple things to try..
1) make sure your using a factory oem usb cable
2) clean the usb port with some contact cleaner(make sure phone is off and battery pulled)
if this does nothing than maybe the phone itself has a problem and will need to be repaired/or replaced.
I know you probably already tried this but, have you got the latest samsung drivers installed on your computer you are using. From what I have seen it it most likely doesn't use these drivers but, it is worth a shot I guess. Like the guy said before there might be something wrong with the USB port. Even when I have completely bricked my phone and it will do absolutely nothing, I am always able to get into download mode. That mode is like a pre-boot mode that doesn't use any drivers or files associated with any of the roms we flash on them (as far as I am aware of). May be the reason the guy sold it to you in the first place. He couldn't do anything with it.
I am owner of the Galaxy S2. I updated yesterday to SuperNexus Jelly Bean ROM, didn't liked it. I restored my device to CM9 which i was using for a month without any problems. Then it started, computer couldn't recognize the phone anymore. Its like that SuperNexus broke something i don't know. I reformatted my Win 7 Ultimate x64 and installed fresh new CM10 - but after all my computer and S2 don't like each other - USB device not recognized. Chaos. I asked my friend to come over just to test with his S2 (he's on stock ICS 4.0.3 or 4.0.4), and when i plug his phone into my computer, everything works flawlessly. I tried mounting in recovery, i tried with and without usb debugging, Odin doesn't find phone neither, tried updating drivers - no luck... Dialing *#7284" just gives me "connection problem or invalid MMI code". Need help on this please!
You can check THIS thread. The one HERE , and also THIS thread.
I've read them all, tried every advice, but phone still isn't reacting to anything. So my problem is that phone couldn't connect to a computer, well it connects but it states "USB device not recognized", it charges but that's all. Everything started with Custom ROM SuperNexus. I've done these steps so far:
1. Reformatted my computer OS, which is Windows 7 Ultimate x64
2. Downloaded CM10 over my phone, get into recovery --> factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format system, install ROM, wipe cache, wipe factory
3. I tried on my computer, tried on my old computer with Win XP x86
4. My friend's Galaxy S2 is working like a charm with MY cable on MY computer, which makes me believe that there is some defectiveness in my phone
5. I tried cleaning MicroUSB port with tooth pick, ear-cleaning pick (or how do you call it), needle with some paper wrapped around it, tried blowing in it
6. I tried with different USB ports, front ones, USB 3.0 - still no luck
7. I tried flashing Wanamlite and Neat ROM-s, still the same problem
I'm using Airdroid now, but i really need to know what's the problem! I have already ordered a new parts on E-Bay and I'm having high hopes about that solution. Im not able to post link to E-bay item, but search it under Item Number: 150904945773. Any other advice is really highly appreciable. Thank you
Try downloading the Rom over WiFi, or Hardline instead. Have you tried a different USB Cable ? Also I'm not able to check that Ebay # right now.

OP, I'm hoping it works for you. You seem to be going in the right direction with your troubleshooting.
Well, i've downloaded this ROM (CM10) via WiFi, now i can do it over Airdroid too. But is there a way to flash Stock Original Samsung ICS in recovery? Or is it only available in Kies and Odin? I came across "Mobile Odin", do you guys have some experience with it, is it safe to use? How big are chances anyway that USB will work with stock ROM? Someone told me "your USB port on phone is OK, if it's charging it's not broken", so I'm thinking that it is not a hardware issue after all? And BTW i used several cables, and three different computers. My girlfriend have SGS3, i tried it like 2 hours ago with her cable on her computer with no luck (and of course her phone have no problems to connect to that computer using that cable). Thank you
I would try a Stock Rooted Rom, and see if that works correctly. If not try connecting the Device, and reboot the PC with the Device plugged in.
How to install stock ROM if i cannot get Kies or Odin to recognize phone? Via Mobile Odin?

Try USB solutions from My Android Solutions or Mobile Odin like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28302093&postcount=4789 ( procedure is same but written for Korean SGS 1
Guys let me tell you that I'm grateful to you, cause this Mobile Odin worked and my Stock Rooted ROM worked in connecting with PC. But not on first try when i got into a newly flashed Stock Rooted Firmware, i've let it to do his stuff, update what he needed to update blahblah. Then i tried to connect my cable - it didn't work. I cursed, i cursed so bad. Then i considered to give it another shot, rebooted the phone - and voila! Everything works, i tried 2-3 times and its working. Obviously SuperNexus started my problems, they couldn't be repaired by any other ROM i tried (i tried CM9, CM10, Wanamlite, old Wanamlite with MTP enabler, Neat ROM)... Then with Mobile Odin everything just worked. Dunno what really was the problem. Thank you all
Glad you got it sorted

Hi,
So i have a one year old GT-i9100 and with it came a USB-cable.
At first the Cable worked perfectly fine and i could gladly copy files from my internal/external storage to my PC and vice versa. But now, all of a sudden, my phone doesn't get recognized by the PC. This causes problems such as if i want to upgrade my software (when official stock JB is released) i wont be able do it. and this is also a major issue since i copy files very often for safe keeping and add ZIP files (with ROM or Kernel information) to my phone.
I've tried different ports but still no recognisation. I removed the drivers and completely uninstalled KIES and then reinstall it. The drivers got installed but KIES don't recognize my phone and neither does my phone appear as an external storage device.
As said this just happened all of a sudden, it was working good before. I have used a total of three USB cables which i've tried on both of my PCs but still no recognition on either one.
Please help me solve this problem.
(i will call Samsung support when i actually get home from school before the support closes )
Thank you for the time and extra thanx for replies
Oh, and it's rooted with Siyah Kernel and AllianceICS ROM
the problem may exist with the usb port on your device. It may need to be replaced.
You can buy a replacement on ebay but need to confident of your skills to replace it as it requires taking the phone apart.
In the mean time, try it out in other people's PC and laptops; can't hurt.
Hi guys I'm having an issue with my GS2 i9100 after installing Cyanogenmod 10.2 using the installer on their site, I thought everything was great until i realised for some reason my phone refuses to display its storage on my windows PC, I've tried changing the different modes in the storage settings on the phone, such as MTP/PTP/Mass Storage and i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the samsung usb driver via Kies but I still can't get it to work, is there an option I'm missing out here or is the rom at fault?
It charges perfectly fine but I am not getting any kind of prompt from either the phone or PC to activate the storage so I can copy files too/from it, it's getting quite annoying as their is alot of music/pictures/videos I want to put on the phone.

Would it be safe to flash the stock rom using CWM6 recovery? as any tool that relies on a USB connection to the phone won't work.
Wanam has a thread in one of the Development sections with CWM flashable stock roms. I'd also be testing it with another PC to rule in/out something PC-side (if you haven't done so already). You need to be methodical with stuff like this - try stuff that rules in/out different causes.
Edit - You could also just take the punt it is the USB board in the phone on the fritz & replace it regardless, which is very cheap & easy to do if you're somewhat handy. KeithRoss39 has a guide in General (search for 'Replacing USB charger board') which has all the info you need if you decide to do this (will cost you a tenner).
In trying the things I've mentioned so far, that's what we're trying to ascertain; whether the board is faulty or not (common S2 fault, almost always shows a few faults but works OK in other ways). Put it this way, if you try those things I've suggested and you're still seeing the same, it's almost certainly the USB board.
In the meantime, use WiFi to get stuff off/on the phone if you need to (plenty of apps on GP enable this if you've never used it).
Sorry for the incredibly late reply, I've changed phones since, but I wanted to update this thread anyway, it turns out re-flashing cyanogenmod after replacing the pcb fixed the issue completely, installing it when i had the dodgy usb pcb must have made it not properly install the USB drivers or something
