[Q] Custom Keyboards - Plz Help. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think I've downloaded about a dozen keyboards, googled a million images, but I can't find what I want.
Why do they all have stupid keys and menus in additional rows that I can't remove nor do I need taking up my screen space.
I think Go Keyboard was about the worst.
This one isn't too bad because the keypad size is adjustable but I still don't need their stupid menu keys.

I just want a fully functional keyboard that looks clean.
Predominantly white.
And I do want the ability to add the arrow key row.
Scalable keys / keypad is also a plus.
I don't want big keys.
I don't want big spaces between keys.
I don't want 3d or bevelled keys.
I don't want additional keys or menus.
Can someone plz help.

I like it, but i cant find any option for swipe input or the arrow keys?
Are there feature unlocks in the trial upgrade?
There's no next word prediction?
And you have to type the full word and space just to get prediction for the current word?

HTC IME for Vibrant?

Like the topic says, any HD version of the HTC IME available for us? I enter really like swipe or the Samsung keyboard much

I don't think it's going to happen without tweaking the apk or your build.prop. I tried the Evo's HTC_IME, it installed just fine, but when I opened the keyboard was greeted with this nice little message.

Yes, this is the htc keyboard i want,
with the arrows going up, down, left & right!!!
Does anybody have it working on the vibrant??

Grab the high res version for anDroid 2.1 and earlier. Works like a charm, just tested it. No arrows like no evo though.
We need to get the evo version working, I need the arrows lol. I hate not having a way to precisely move through text.
I need one with the arrows at the bottom...

I feel you! That's what I need 2, the arrows just like EVO & HD2, I hate having to use my finger to click in between text, especially when typing passwords, where you can't even see the text!!!
does anyone know of a different keyboard that has these arrows? obviously the htc one from hd2 is the best for this, but is there a free or even paid option that replicates this bit of functionality?

You realize you can swipe from swype icon on the bottom left to the symbol key directly to the right of it to bring up arrows, cut/copy/paste, and delete word/backspace keys, right?
Nice. Thanks!

lol no i didn't... that is some good stuff to have handy. i knew swipe had this but i always had to cycle through a bunch of stuff to get to it. nice quick option. still miss having just the arrows right there, but that might just be out of habit. thanks!

Here is the newest TouchPal keyboard from China!

Far has I know it is still in beta over there in China.... but I can not read chinese....
Here are some pictures!
I really like this keyboard it has always been one of my favorites ever sense the first beta last year. now they have made lots of changes and it is even better.
When you install it it will be in chinese. you will need to go to settings and switch it to english.
Looks nice. Downloading now.
EDIT: Just tried it out for a while. Verdict: It's great!
Once you turn off the Chinese language, the text prediction is great, and the buttons are quick and responsive. I like the option to have different layouts for portrait vs. landscape (even though I just use QWERTY for both). The edit button is top center, and very handy, since I came from a G1 and the Vibrant has no trackball/d-pad to edit words. One note though, the delete button in Edit deletes the next character, not the previous. Not a huge deal, since the backspace on the keyboard still deletes the previous character and you could just select what you need to delete in the Edit screen, just a weird change. If you don't know what I mean, try it out yourself, it's worth a try at least
I love that style of keyboard with the two letters per key (Like on my original Blackberry Pearl).
@Phromik
Yeah it is a great little keyboard. my favorite feature is being able to swipe to change from T9 to QWERTY

I am new to the Android side of XDA just picked up my Vibrant 2 days ago and loving it.............
My favorite too......one of the first things I downloaded to my Vibrant and seems to work pretty well just missing the ability to save passwords or url or email adresses (one click entry in the username or password box for websites is really slick and I miss that the most). It is still beta so we will see if they implement it later on.
Link not working... looks fun though

Um, why does the app need access to Contacts and Voice Recorder?
I ask, because we (in the I.T. dept) are being bombarded by Chinese malware and such.
The permissions do seem a bit excessive for a keyboard.
Requires these permissions:
Your personal information
read contact data
Network communication
full Internet access, view network state, view Wi-Fi state
Hardware controls

[Q] Alphanumeric-style keyboard like on the PSP?

I was wondering if there was a way to use the playstation controls as a keyboard very similar to the way it is on a PSP when typing. Where the hardware buttons help to type. For example, The shoulder buttons move the cursor left and right, X confirms the key, [] backspaces, start is enter, select changes the style of onscreen keyboard. etc. etc.
I do not have an Xperia play yet, still have my htc fuze, but it would be nice if it had this feature because im very proficient with typing on my PSP. Thanks.
No...but it can be used to scroll through the home screens and the app drawer.

umm, i guess that's cool. As long as the buttons are usable for other things than games. I was kinda hoping other people had the same idea as me, and used those buttons for more. i was either hoping to find the PSP style on-screen keyboard, or the makeshift keyboard from gt4, which uses the analog to select a block on a 3x3 grid and the face buttons to select a letter. It's called the Danzel keyboard.
Sigh, i wish the PSP homebrew community was on the Xperia play. I guess it's time to learn to program.
How about the below idea

Maybe also making square PS key to backspace, triangle to shift (single press upper case next key, double press Caps Lock), X and Start buttons Enter, O and Select buttons spacebar. Unless Select button could be used to switch qwerty... row to numbers 1234... etc. Turning the touchpad into 2-mode keyboard, so main mode lettering could be printed in black on the touchscreen as above and secondary (numbers, symbols, etc) in grey next to them in grey and/or smaller size...
Menu button below PS directional ones to popup the built-in onscreen keyboard for numbers/symbols, etc input?

Keyboard with cursor arrows (move left/right)?

My old phone had a small joystick, my wife's Android has a roller ball. Both nice to navigate around while editing text. I don't see any way to navigate on any of the included keyboards, other than the clumsy blue tab you can get if you tap the text itself. Any recommendations for a keyboard which includes navigation keys, even if they are on a secondary layout?
I recommend Thumb Keyboard. I used it on my streak for over a year and absolutely can't do without it. It has built in themes and you can customize the size to fit your needs.

Swype has a section almost solely for navigating text. Wrote from the Swype key to the alt key and it'll pull it up.

I'm almost positive Swiftkey X has a similar option to thumb keyboard, at least it looks the same in portrait.
I use Thumb Keyboard also. Have been using it for years on the Streak and now on the Note.
My fav is smart keyboard pro - and don't forget to install the english pack for autocorrect and turn the cursor keys on in settings.

Smart keyboard. The only thing I don't like is that the arrows look greyed out but its just a visual thing.
Sweet, lots of choices to try out. Exactly what I was looking for, thanks.
The reason I like Thumb Keyboard the best is the split when in landscape mode. Makes it so easy to type while browsing. I don't know if other keyboards do it, but since I bought it, I'm sticking with it.
It is on sale right now too.

Quick launch app

Hi everyone..
I'm looking for an app, widget or anything you can think of, style appsi, sidecontrol or any other quick launch app, that can be activated through a shortcut or any other way beside gesture... From my experience both of these apps are the most usefull and efficient apps of there kind. You can add favorite app, contacts, toggels or practikly anything you would like. The thing is that for me personally, being able to activate them only via gesture is quite annoying. I find myself accidently triggering it, or facing bugs. Appsi hasn't released anything for a while, so I guess that the project is over. And sidecontrol has bugs and doesn't work well on my lg g3. Does anybody know something else like theme?
Thank you for taking the time to read this long post, and of course for your help....
You can try SwipePad app.

Sounds simplistic, but why not just put your apps, shortcuts, etc in a folder?

Swipe pad is launched by a gesture, and is rather limited than appsi or sidecontrol...

Because that to access everything you need to go the home screen. I'm looking for something you can access these features from anywhere..
The home screen is just one big menu that has hot key access via the center of the navbar.
I can access it from anywhere by hitting the home key. I can return to any app I've started via the recents key.
Your view of how your menu should work is the same as this. In your app you hotkey access from anywhere. So do I. You would have categories to establish multiple menu levels. So do I. You need to return to the app you were in. So do I.
Mine is just reinventing what we already have. Yours requires additional code and system resources. I'm using mine and you're still looking.
