Hi
Just a quick question about the thor-gapps-rom-2.zip
Using kfxhd 8.9 safestrap back up completed rooted etc, come to flash the new ROM slot i get the message
"Kernel does not have support for reading SELinux contexts, then , E: Error executing binary in zip and error flashing zip, FAILED
Busybox installed up to date, i been reading for nearly 10 hours through the forums not come across anything similiar yet,
Thanks
Thor is the name of the 7" hdx buddy, that ROM is not for the 8.9" version which is codenamed Apollo.

3 ) We can install .apk from android store with a drag'n'drop ? (I haven't see the similare version of moon+ reader between amazon store and google store :-/ )
Thanks in advance,
Kind regards,

Check this thread for downgrade info. In short you need to rollback to 3.2.8 then upgrade to 4.5.2 which can be rooted. There is risk executing this procedure including a hard brick. If you are unfamiliar with HDX devices they are exceptionally difficult to recover once hosed. Tools/techniques used on other android devices (factory cable, fastboot, usb spoofing, etc) simply don't work. You can not unlocked the bootloader on your device as Amazon has incorporated rollback protection ('efuse') that will permanently disable your device if you make the attempt.
Once on 4.5.2 You can install Safestrap v4 and then flash Nexus v4 or CM11. No other 3rd party roms are supported.
Pay attention to the warnings/cautions if you opt to rollback - especially those dealing with OTA and keeping wifi disabled. If you take an update while on 3.2.8 your device will instantly brick. At other times you will be upgraded to 4.5.4 and have to start the rollback process over again.
There are no step-by-step tutorials or helpful videos. You have to read, read, read and ask questions when needed. Do your homework before posting. If you ask a question that has been answered multiple times you probably will not get a friendly reception.

Ok thanks you alot for this informations. So I prefer to stop, I don't want a high brick. (I have already crack somes video games, and unbrick.. but I don't know android ^^)
Now i'm not sure to change with a nexus 7... It's the same resolution, more possibility with nexus 7, same price.
What do you think about that ?
Successfully rolled back from 4.5.4
My hdx 7 3rd gen was running 4.5.4 and was able to successfully rollback to 3.2.8 and then upgrade to 4.5.2. Next step is rooting!

Be sure to block OTA. An update will push you to 4.5.4 and kill root.

Dude - just get a Nexus 7. Easy to root/unlock and supports tons of third party roms. HDX has better HW but is a royal pain to mod and does not support your preferred rom.

- Thanks for the offer of help, however the files from the Fire Phone will not work with the HDX series.
- The Fire Phone uses the full MSM8974 soc which includes it's own radio, the HDX uses APQ8074 soc with an external radio/gps
- For thor if you want LTE, you could use HDX Nexus ROM 4.0.5 or CM-11 for now.
- Also I am not even sure if phone calls are supported from the HDX RIL interface as I haven't had a chance to look yet.
Hello Xda,
Please help me get clear instructions on how to install the custom recovery TWRP on the kindle fire HDX 3rd generation. I've tried many things to try. For example, i already installed a random fire adb driver on it but it still doesn't work. I've also tried the app safestrap(thor) and sucessfully rebooted into recovery, but could flash cm13 an gapps. It didn't even let me recover my backup. I am hoping to install specifically TWRP and not another app that may fail. After the custom recovery is installed how do you download any other operating system preferably cm13 or whatever the latest version is? Please tell me how to do that too. Need Help Fast, the anxiosness is killing me!!! Thanks
Confirmation
XDA,
Is it true that Kindle fire hdx OS 4.5.5 can only run cm11 with safestrap? I read that in another thread and just want to confirm it. If this is true than this is the answer to my previous question. Also how do I update the SuperSU binaries and possibly get pro? Thank you so much for your time and effort.

You can use CM11 for Safestrap v4, or the new Fire Nexus ROM currently under development.
You must NOT use CM12.1, CM13 or SlimLP - all require an unlocked bootloader and the real TWRP (i.e. NOT Safestrap!).
I've grown tired of the limitations of FireOS and the Amazon appstore and I'd like to install a more standard android version on the device. I want to get a few things right though before a I begin. Most importantly, which available android version would you all recommend? I'm ready to follow all steps to backup and root the device, but is there anything else the community suggests being aware of before I begin?
Hi.. I'm actually looking to wipe out my FireOS and install a ROM. Same Kindle Fire HDX 7 4.5.5.1. You can look up the steps that Davey has been providing another user in here

Thank you much, I'll give this a look!
hi, after reading a few threads on the kindle forum, unsure whether or not ; given the restriction & safegurads amazon had hardcoded into 4.5.5.2 fire os if it's possible to modify the device or even put gapps on it?
the kindle was a gift that has largely gathered dust in a drawer due to the amazon centric nature of it and my lack of interest in using amazon services. is there any way to free it up and either install something like cyanogenmod or gapps on it?
thanks!

Having trouble identifying your device. Don't recognize FireOS 5.5.2. Typo? Also, please pass along your device model (eg: HD, HDX) and approximate screen size. From there can answer your question and/or direct you to the appropriate forum.

Thanks; missing '4' prefix threw me. Given LTE likely a 8.9 (larger) screen model also known as Apollo.
Path to a custom ROM:
- downgrade FireOS from 4.5.5.2 to 3.2.8.0 (easy)
- root with TowelRoot (easy)
- unlock bootloader (challenging for some)
- install custom recovery (fairly easy)
- flash custom ROM (fairly easy)
Custom ROMs based on KitKat, Lollipop and Marshmallow are available. While all are stable and largely feature complete none support LTE (well); some have issues with Bluetooth. That said, if a WiFi based tablet with full access to the Google Play Store and a gorgeous screen sounds appealing then transforming your HDX will likely be worth the effort. Note some technical expertise and a Windows PC (Macs and Linux also work) is required to unlock the bootloader.
Installing Google Play Services/Store on FireOS v4 is a dicey proposition that seldom works out well. Unfortunately, 3rd gen devices can not be upgraded to FireOS v5 which plays nice (nicer) with Google Framework/Services.
