I've checked all over, and their are many...but none of them are straight to the point
I want to install custom roms but I cant seem to find a proper thread that is step by step on loading a custom recovery, I'm jumping all over the place, so far I have a unlocked bootloader, rooted and running 4.2.2 and I have a recovery.img file on my sdcard (not sure if thats needed or not)
I've come to decide I need to do it manually cause the rom manager app doesn't have my tablet listed.
Doesn't bother me what custom recovery is it, as long as I can boot into it and load custom roms from SD card im happy

Looks like can help you! I too had this problem and dont even ask me how much I researched XDA Forums in vain But Ill help YOU! You said you're rooted and on 4.2.2 so you should be good to go! Here's the link to Dual Recovery for XTZ (TWRP and Philz Touch) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606
You said you Unlocked your bootloader. I hope you didnt forget to backup your TA before that.
Gimme a Thanks if I helped and dont forget to thank the original dev [NUT] either!
Wait wait wait Lol
What on earth is TA?
All I have is the code that unlocked the bootloader, and man oh man, im glad someone can help
Ill be doing what that thread states and i'll keep you updated
Thanks
It worked!!!!!! I have the custom recovery installed!
But i have a few questions? can i only use the app to boot into the recovery or can I use the volume power way, cause it didn't seem to work at first so i used the app
secondly, when i used the app, i booted into clockmod recvery, and i wanted to install a ROM i placed on my sdcard, so I wiped out the phone getting it ready for the ROM installation, so i formatted and found i cant open my sdcard only my internal storage, thats means im stuck, so now i fused flashtools and placed 4.2.2 back on the phone, must root it again and then load the recovery and place the rom on my internal storage, ill keep you updated let me know if there was a easier way
Just realized I could have tried the other recoveies, cause maybe they would be able to access the sdcard
OK so I have downloaded this rom and gapps and the instructions are same old same old, place files on sdcard, boot into recovery, wipe and install, I got an installation aborted any ideas?
All the roms are failing and ive been trying the different recoveries, I must be doing something wrong

Hello all I am new to this whole rooting process... I am not afraid to admit it as we all were once new at what we are doing at some point. I need help creating a nandroid back up on my atrix. O have successfully unlocked the boot loader and rooted my phone. I performed a backup using cwm through the boot screen and then I proceeded to wipe all my data and install a new rom when to my surprise it got stuck on the boot load screen for 30minites before I pulled the battery and tried restoring to my backup that I made with cwm.. it appears that the backup only successfully installed the boatload.img file and none of the other. Img files therefore once rebooted my phone would stay stuck at the boatload screen... I finally wiped everything and found a gingerbread 2.3.4 version 4.5 beta and copied it to my external sd card and installed it through cwm choosing the zip file to install and rebooting. Now I am back up and running but I do obviously not know how to make a nandroid backup so if I decide to tinker around with my phone again I will not have the same problem as before. Any help would be greatly appreciated... I am sorry this is so long bit if someone helps me I would rather they know the whole story then just portions of it. Thanks everyone who reads this and replies!!!

Looked into rom racer's forum page still confused
Hello again, I have looked into the forum for "romracer" and there is still quite a bit of confusion on my side (noob). I am already nervous about flashing things to my phone since my last stuck in boot loading screen. My current version of cwm is whatever came with option number 2 on the automatic unlock file that unlocked my bootloader and also provided root access. I believe it is called "Tenfar CWM". I want to be able to make a successful nandroid backup and I am understanding that I need to flash the latest version of CWM for atrix. I am confused about how I go about flashing that onto my phone safely. I am sorry I am such a noob, but I want to understand how to get the latest version of CWM for atrix onto my phone... There are so many links to different things on the developer for CWM forum page that my mind is spinning out of control. Any help on where to download all the necessary files to perform this flash and how to flash my phone with the latest version of CWM for atrix 4G would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for being understanding and helping me through this process that seems overwhelming for a noob like me.
Thanks,

1) Go to /system/etc. and delete "install-recovery.sh". This can be done with Root Explorer, available from the market. If it's not there, then don't worry about it.
2) Download which every color of Rom Racer's CWM you want to your pc (same folder as fastboot files).
3) Boot into fastboot mode and enter fastboot mode.
4) Connect phone to pc, and open command prompt from fastboot folder (shift + right click -> open command window here).
5) Enter fastboot commands from Rom Racer's OP.
6) Enter "fastboot reboot" to reboot phone.
7) Boot into recovery and make sure it worked
*If you still see Tenfar's recovery app on your phone, delete it like you do any other app.
OR
1) Delete Tenfar's Recovery app.
2) Go to /system/etc. and delete "install-recovery.sh". This can be done with Root Explorer, available from the market. If it's not there, then don't worry about it.
3) Download ROM Manager from the market (free)
4) Install the CWM Recovery for the Atrix via the ROM Manager App.
5) Use this CWM Recovery
or proceed to install ROM Racer's CWM Recovery...
6) Download ROM Racer's CWM and put it on your internal SD card (/sd-card).
7) Open ROM Manger App
8) Select install ROM from .zip (or something like that - one of the main options).
9) Select the .zip you put there, an uncheck the options (no need to wipe anything).
10) Phone will reboot, install the .zip, and reboot again.
11) Should have ROM Racer's version on the phone now, and be able to enter recovery via the ROM Manager App.
Thank you so much... I will try that once I have some time to dedicate strictly to this...

i have spent the last 2 days searching these xda forums. btw u guys rock. i would not have gotten throgh rooting and putting a custom rom my first phone if it wasn't for you. anyway, i found out the hard way that trying to mod an atrix with 2.3.6 on build 4.5.141 is not easy. after many wrong turns, i was finally able to unlock my bl and get my phone rooted. then i was able to play with cwm. i was able to backup my current rom, but cannot reboot into recovery. this made me curious so i tried to enter android recovery which failed as well. both ways gives me the droid guy and a triangle. i went thru all this work so i could flash a cool rom ( thinking cm7 since it seems to be stable, but i wanna check around). since i cant reboot into recovery, im kind of at a stand still. i did my best to search through the forums before i asked any stupid questions, but im stuck. please help me.
What have you tried to get into recovery? How did you install a recovery?
Delete install-recovery.sh @ /system/etc.
Then, install Rom Racers recovery via fastboot.
Sent from my CM7 Atrix.
I tried to reboot into recovery from rom manager. When that failed i powered phone up holding volume down, then scrolled to android recovery option. i used automatic unlock v4.2 to unlock bl's (option 1). I did not use option 2 to root since i was not familiar with tenfar cwm. So i rooted using method #1 from rootzwiki's atrix page. I then chose option 6 for cwm recovery and rom manager. I went to market, downloaded rom manager. When i opened rom manager, i clicked flash cwm recovery. then tried to reboot into recovery and....dead end.
thanks swiftks. i was actually looking into following your advice. just didnt want to post until i tried. anyway, i already have rom racers zip downloaded onto my internal memory. the plan was to use rom manager to install rom from sd card just like its says on the noob page. just was never able to get that far. so im sorry for my ignorance, but how do i go about deleting that file. and how do i use fastboot to install rom racers recovery? im trying my best to learn. i broke my captivate a few days ago and this phone is new to me. plus, im not exactly a tech expert. i just follow directions well and have learned just enough to get myself into trouble
Ill let swift answer from here cuz im stumped. I do know to delete the file, you need root explorer (can find on play store) and root access. Open root explorer and navigate to system/etc then find the file and delete it.
update. so before i went hunting down root explorer i tried to flash cwm recovery through rom manager one last time (3rd time, every time said it was successful. lo and behold, i got into recovery. i am now going to attempt to upgrade to rom racers cwm. i did at one point download a fastboot file, just cant remember if i installed correctly cuz i was pretty drunk last night. how can i verify. i do definately have sdk tools tho. checked for adb devices. is fastboot under sdk tools? or was that a dumb question?. nevermind. i do have fastboot. found my fastboot device. Then entered "fastboot erase recovery" failed 000300003. im pretty sure this needs to be deleted as u suggested. when i got recovery to open, i went back and tried to finish installing romracers cwm via rom managers install from sd option. got the triangle again. reflashed cwm thru rom manager and was able to boot into recovery. from there i tried to install zip from sd, installation successful, reboot propmpt. rebooted. wnet directly to rom manager, tried to reboot into recovery... triangle. reflash thru rm, recovery boots. reboot system. tried to reboot into recovery, but triangle is back. the only way for me to get to recovery is reflash it everytime before i use it. this has got to be because i never deleted the path you suggested, right? im really tryin here, but i feel like im stuck inside a real life boot loop

On my computer the path for fastboot is android-sdk-tools/platform-tools/fastboot
i downloaded root explorer. deleted install-recovery.sh @ /system/etc. once i did this i was able to use fstboot commands from rom racers page. fastboot erase recovery was successful. then tried 'fastboot flash recovery recovery-atrix5.img'
error: cannot load.
im chipping away at it but wow. thoght i would be flashing cm7 by now. I do appreciate your patience, lord knows mine is running low

At this point are you still not able to get in recovery?
finally, success! just figured out what the hell im doing with fastboot. unzipped romracers cwm to same folder containing fastboot, finished last part of cmd (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img then fastboot reboot and voila! i now have rom racers cwm. i will now enter rom manager, backup rom (which i understand is a nandroid process). then start researcing cm7 and eventually some more roms to play with. thanks for all of your help
once recovery was fixed, everything was a breeze. put cm7zip on internal sd, installed from recovery, data wipe then cache wipe, then reboot. iput google apps zip on internal sd, installed from recovery. fancy new phone! only took me 3 days to do it. i hope someone else can learn from my mistakes

Hi guys.
I am a newcomer,so go easy please.
I have spent the last few weeks researching all things root to do with my galaxy s2,I am pretty much ready to go but I am unsure about what is installed on my phone.
I got the phone second hand, it has superuser and this works for things like greenify etc, so I assume the phone is rooted, but when I boot into recovery there is no clockworkmod or anything like it.
So then I dug deeper and read warnings about trying to install clockworkmod with custom kernels etc.
How do I know what method was used for rooting, and what type of kernel I have?
Basically I want to nandroid backup before I start tinkering.
Model is GT-i9100 4.1.2 Kernel 3.0.31 - 889555.
Thanks for your time, I don't want to brick my phone on my first venture!
Steve.
Flash philz kernel tar with Odin or zip in stock recovery. That will root and give you cwm recovery  but do read about it first. Don't just flash any old thing. Read read and read some more.
Thanks, I have read lots, not as easy as I was hoping. I might practice on my old htc desire first!
Easy way is to flash the zip as an update in stock recovery. Reboot system and you're done. Make sure you put the philz kernel zip on ext sd card not int sd.
hi, hope someone can help. i'm sort of a newbie, so i might not even understand any help you give.:crying:
i have a optimus g e970. i installed the freeg app,
i've been trying to flash a custom rom, and have been unsuccessful. two things have happened.
1. with the freeg app, i click on the twrp block, and it says 2.6.3.3 successfully installed. so i reboot into recovery, and it says ver. 2.6.3.0 is the one i have. not sure if this matters, but figured i'd lay that out there.:crying:
and so i reboot into recovery, but when i try to install, the zip files i've put on the internal sd card are not recognized....it's like they aren't even there.
so, i try plan b.
2. i go back into freeg, and install cwm recovery, and reboot into recovery. now, the zip files ARE recognized, but every flash is aborted. unfortunately i didn't catch the exact wording of the warning it gave me, but i'm thinking maybe i had a rom not for the e970, but i'm not sure.
before i brick this thing, are there any suggestions? the rom on the device is Android version 4.1.2. i'm not big into flashing roms, but i have done so in the past if i have line by line instructions that i can follow.
Depending on what rom you are flashing You may need a more updated recovery.
Edit: nevermind you have 2.6.3.0, that is the newest version. However there is a kitkat 2.6.3.0 if ur flashing kitkat roms , use a recovery that support it

ok, i read that thread, didn't take me a whole lotta time. hahah. but next question.
the kit kat twrp....do i need that recovery if i am already on a kk, which i am not, or if i am going to flash a kk rom?
ok, this is where i'm at:
i have the kk twrp zip. i put everything on internal sd card. no recognition of zips.
i put everything on external sd card. no recognition of zips.
where i go from here, i'm all ears.

If you were already on kitkat you wouldn't need a kitkat recovery to run the phone .. If you're going to flash a kk rom you will need a kk recovery. The question is confusing ... So my answer may be confusing as well..

I don't know what internal SD card mean , the SD card or internal memory.. However regardless of the version of your recovery you should still be able to see the zips. If you are able to you may just put the kk recovery zip on your SD card, flash it , reboot recovery and see what happens. Also I think in twrp you are able to pick either to use internal memory or SD card too ( its in the options I think )
hey, thanks for your help. i know my questions can be confusing. such is being a newbie on this stuff, i don't know the precise phraseology sometimes.
nonetheless, i played around with that link you provided, and i think i might be good to go. i'll lay out what i did to help anyone who is in my positions.
i downloaded the zip for the twrp for kit kat. i was on 4.1.2, trying to flash a kk rom.
i put the zip on my internal storage, and rebooted into my already existing twrp recovery. zip not recognized. so i rebooted into cwm recovery, and the zip now was detected. i flashed the twrp for kk recovery.
rebooted into my new recovery. i wiped, and then clicked "install'. now, the recovery did in fact detect the rom and gapps zips. flashed, and rebooted system.
so i think i am good to go. not sure why twrp was not recognizing zips and cwm was. again, thanks. knowing there was a special twrp for kk got me going on the right track.

Yeah it happened to me once, I just downloaded an app called "Flashify" and used it to flash the KK TWRP.
Afterwards, reboot into the recovery and it will recognize .zip files.
After I attempted to install the CM 11 preview that just came out it seems as though I get stuck in a boot loop. I am able to get into the bootloader but not the recovery. The reason I think I am stuck in the boot loop is because I did not know you had to flash the boot.img that was inside the .zip file, and went ahead and flashed the .zip in my current recovery. I am just wondering if I could still fastboot flash the boot.img file without causing even more problems.
Yes, in the forum the ROM was posted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2-tablet/orig-development/z2-tabletdevelopment-cm11-android-4-4-t2809793) but I guess I didn't see that he said it was in the zip :silly:.
Nonetheless, I just don't want to hard brick the device so that is why I am asking. Thanks in advance for anyone that can help!

Just to clarify first, do you have a 4G tablet or wifi version? And which one did you flash (castor or castor_windy)

Opps, meant to mention that. I have the castor_windy version (Wi-Fi) model and flashed the castor_windy zip. I also meant to mention that I have an unlocked bootloader with the CWM based recovery (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708194). I don't think this is as important but I do have the 16GB storage. I earlier said I could not get into that recovery that I have installed, but the violet light still goes on when I boot, but nothing else.

Ok no problem, Have you tried flashing CWM through fastboot, then reinstalling ROM through CWM?
If that can't be done, Can you flash this castor_windy version https://mega.co.nz/#!mJ5VTATR!Rb9pX0a4drAkVX53Mjf6_vZr8FqX0UzXcf1nSTzj_Fk
through fastboot, then immediately flash CWM to secure a recovery.
The link is the castor_windy ROM without having to flash a boot.img separately. Thats your safest solution instead of flashing boot.img
Thank you, just re-flashing the recovery from the thread I linked seemed to do the trick. Maybe I will try and flash Cyanogenmod later now that I got the stock ROM working again. At least I was smart enough to make a nandroid backup in CWM before hand though!
Again, thanks alot!

Sent from my Xperia Z2 Tablet Wifi using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hi all,
bad day for me... It seems that I bricked my Z2 Tablet tonight.
At the beginning, I just wanted to install CM11.
My Z2 is a SGP512 Wifi only. So, regarding the page http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/07/12/cyanogenmod-11-nightly-builds-start-for-xperia-z2-tablet/ , it says : "There are currently nightly builds for the Wi-Fi variants (SGP511, SGP512) of the Xperia Z2 Tablet under codename “Castor Windy”" .
So I downloaded Castor Windy and put it in the tablet.
After that, I did had to install a recovery. I succeeded to install XZDualRecovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2794175). Once installled, I went into TWRP Recovery , started to wipe all. And next step, I began to install zip Castor Windy. At this time, TWRP tells me that Castor Windy is not for my tablet model. And I have to use Castor. Problem. I wiped all. So, I have to mount the Tablet systems and drives to put the new Castor zip downloaded. But I'm unable to mount. Nothing is mounted. I tried to use adb to connect while I was in TWRP but nothing worked. I wanted to use adb to send on one of partitions the new downloaded rom. I was unable to do that.
Finally, I shut down my tablet. I took the SD Card to put it into my PC and to put on it the downloaded Rom. And when I wanted to restart the Tablet, only the Sony Logo appears and I'm not anymore able to enter in recovery mode. ADB and Fastboot fail to detect my tablet.
I'm totally lost, and I fear that all is lost.
Please, help me, I just would like to enter recovery and flash Castor Rom.... :crying:
Thanks a lot by advance.
Tom.
