Samsung this morning announced which of its devices are planned to receive an update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The list doesn't appear to contain any real surprises, but it's good to have some confirmation.

Galaxy Note 3
Galaxy Note II
Galaxy S4
Galaxy S4 mini
Galaxy S4 Active
Galaxy S4 zoom
Galaxy S III
Galaxy S III mini

Galaxy Light
Galaxy Note 8.0
Galaxy Tab 3
Galaxy Note 10.1
Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition

The update will NOT come before Verizon's approval which means it will be delayed for months...after all the other carriers get it. The Nexus 7 2014 JUST got certified last week. (or week before) It has been out for eons. This is how it always is with Verizon.

Well hopefully we get a leak or port from one of the other carriers and the masters can do their magic.

The really significant thing is that we *are* going to get the update. I was expecting 4.3 to be the last. Even if it takes months it will still be far earlier that I would have expected, even assuming that we were going to get another major update at all. (Face it. 4.3 took forever for even Samsung to get out.) This opens the possibility that we might even get another update someday.
Of course, I plan to have a Galaxy Note 4 in 10 months or so.

It seems generally speaking that the big name manufacturers (at least Samsung/Moto/HTC) are getting the point that these devices deserve the updates and it promotes customer loyalty! I like the fact Google is pushing them too

Well the biggest thing is that the 4.4.2 requires little ram. I might have jumped the gun on release but I am happy that we are in line to get it. I really hope that AT&T, Verizon or another service releases the update. I am pretty sure that when the international version get shipped out, someone will definitely port it over

im not even excited about a 4.4 update i just got the 4.3 update in december and even after updateing verizon was saying we have no info on a 4.3 update being released for my note 2 and i gotto say the update is not all that great after the update my camera which on 4.1 took great pics now takes grainy pics that are awful

I am confused, I know its a completely different hardware but when 4.3 was released for note 3, it was ported over to note 2 by seanzscreams. Why would this be any different?

Yes from q2, which means starting in q2. So international will get in first in q2, and the carriers will get it a few months later likely.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say ICS was post-poned until Q2 so that this could be a full rollout; meaning within days the first to the last note should recieve it's OTA.
Seriously, look at the publicity behind this device. I honestly think AT&T and Samsung managed to NOT be assholes this time.
Isn't this just for the regular note and not the LTE version.

Even though at&t is "promoting" the Note, you think they are going to roll out ICS quickly? It might cause harm to their "flagship" icrap.
I went into an at&t store on release day of the note to get a case for my international note & I about fell over dead when I saw a poster on the wall with the note. Something besides crapple.
Probably gonna get this Ics in Canada early

I think most of this hype is actually directed at the International version. Samsung even mentions the Note's "powerful 1.4ghz processor" in the newest Angry Birds PR. That sounds to me like the Exynos phones will get ICS first (GII and I Note) and then if we're lucky the Snapdragon models (SR and I717)
And that still doesn't count the carrier development time. I keep my original estimate of ICS on the AT&T I717 at October 1st and the Canadian versions in late summer.
Call me cynical but....
Of course the dev roms will flow alot sooner.

ICS was postponed on the international version because the current ICS leaks suck and Samsung probably doesn't want to release another half assed software update. I would be very surprised if AT&T sees this in Q2

In theory, we should be getting Jelly Bean (4.2.2) along with most of the S4 apps shortly as well (provided VZW doesn't screw us over...like always).
Then again, I'm waiting for the some final GPS patches to be merged into CM10.1, then I'll probably be running that full time.

When Samsung says "looking at May-June for 4.2.2 Galaxy Note 2/S3 updates", that means' International. Then, Verizon has to take that update, drop it's pants and pop a squat on it, smear it all over the place, hold on to it for a few more months to let it really ferment and get nasty, then they'll post some kind of update changelog wherein Verizon is God himself and is sending us a gift from heaven that they concocted.
Samsung must sit there and shake their head every time Verizon updates one of their phones months after they did.

[Q] End of Galaxy user? Should i get Nexus 4?

I had iPhone 3G as my first phone, following by 4s then i switched to Galaxy s3 in April 2013. I've learned a lot, i've flashed many custom roms, kernel etc.
After seeing Samsung delaying updates and transporting regional lock along with kitkat update are the reason that i come to decision that i will sell my galaxy s3 for Nexus 4 (cant afford n5 yet).
I need your help guys
How good is the battery on nexus 4 compared to galaxy s3?
Idc about storage
This is a q&a thread, so it also belongs there. But to answer your question. Comparing stock of both devices, the s3 definitely wins. Samsung is good at creating a good battery life, even with touchwiz

S3 wins hands down. Tho I would recommend getting sony because don't delay the update
I disagree.
Bells and whistles like smart stay that doesn't even work properly after the jellybean update or a maybe slightly better camera (though I don't find much difference) doesn't outweight not having proper multitask. Also, neither touchwiz nor aosp have the nexus smoothness. Even my dad's former galaxy nexus feels slightly better than my s3.
If you can live with not having an sdcard or a removable battery, I'd say the n4 provides a better user experience (did try it for about a month). The only reason I'm not getting the n4 is because I'm waiting out the n5.

This thread would be best off in the Nexus 4 section, most users who browse the S3 forums still have and use the S3.

This is a joke, right? S3 is in overall better then the nexus 4. S3 will get 4.4. Regional lock can be removed. Also SD-Card and removable battery is essential for a phone in my opinion. (Plus, the N4 is an Lg device ) So if you don't plan to go from S3 to N5, stick to the S3!

Which phone would you guys recommend as the three network are planning to rollout 4G in many cities including my area this December. I have two choices. Galaxy mega or the galaxy s3 ultrafast. [Q] Verizon will be at a snails pace to Kitkat upgrade?

I read that Verizon will be the only carrier not to sell the Nexus 5. Reasoning? Likely it is highly integrated with Google apps such as the forbidden Wallet. Google plans to end fragmentation with this backward compatible version but we all know how Verizon likes to be in complete control. Chances the Note II will see this carrier upgrade, slim to none?
Verizon likes to have full control over the devices which Google doesn't want in its Nexus program. Verizon also doesn't see the potential (Profit) in the Nexus which may not be too far off as it is mainly just us Android addicts that go crazy over it, most mainstream consumers are looking at the G2, Moto X, HTC One, and GS4 (All of which Verizon has on their network).
As for when we will get the update really relies on Samsung and if they want to make it available for the Note 2. The 4.3 update was in the air for a while and being that the GS5 will be announced early next year we may never see 4.4 officially. If we do we may be in luck for once as Verizon and Samsung seemed to have synced up nicely with the 4.3 release and Verizon is actually one of the first carriers to push it out to their Galaxy devices (Note 2, GS3, GS4) but who knows.
I think the low memory requirements for Android and 4.4 were more for porting it to new devices such as watches and to support current low end models, not getting older forgotten about devices finally upgraded.

Samsung is slow? Are you insane? It's the carrier that is slow. Check your facts pal. Samsung usually gives at least a couple major updates but they are severely limited by Verizon. Especially when we are such an open phone. They take more time to fix the bootloader being unlocked as instructed by Verizon. Samsung is a fantastic company. The fact that the s3 is getting 4.3 is a good indicator of how the note 2 will be treated a little later down the line.

It still take Samsung months to release an update on the international versions. They are only semi quick on the very latest phones. There's no reason a billion dollar company should take that long when a group of developers from this site can port asop Roms by themselves in a matter of hours, albeit with some bugs but these people do this for fun and are way more efficient.
