[Q] Free apps vanished from phone - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My S3 recently lost every free app (including Google Play Store, Gmail and other built-ins), except the Samsung apps after a reboot. However:
Every paid-for app is still installed and working.
My contacts, photos and other data seem to be intact.
The missing applications are still listed in the application manager, but are lacking their icons and names (e.g. Spotify displays as com.spotify.mobile.android.ui) and display with size 0.00B.
The application manager recognises the amount of cached data for each application.
Any ideas on what might have happened? It's currently running Android 4.3, but I'm not sure when it might have last updated.
Additionally, I don't have an SD card installed, so all the apps were installed on the internal memory. Restarting makes no difference.

Restore your Nandroid backup .

I assume you haven't switched accounts in Google Play. Otherwise switch to first account.
Edit: Or better said; switch to google play account on which you installed your apps

Happened to me once. I lost all non-Sammy apps. Seems there was an issue with GApps.
I just used Odin to reflash the stock ROM.

[Q] Missing system apps eg: Gmail & Google Play

My phone got hang and it rebooted itself. After that, I found some of my apps are gone even it's system apps like gmail and google play! Then the internal memory suddenly become full left only few kbs.
What's goin on? Anybody can help?
I've tried to download manual these apps but when i wanted to install it, it says apps was not installed.

Missing (though installed) apps in Play Store

I am suddenly missing apps that are actually already installed in the Play Store. For instance, I have Rdio that I installed from the Play Store several weeks ago. Now, when I go to the Play Store, it doesn't show up under installed apps. In fact, it shows that I only have 20 apps installed, though when I go back to my app drawer, it shows over 150! To add, if I do a search on the app that is installed, it doesn't even show up on the search within the Play Store. It's as if the app isn't available anymore.
This is a problem because I can't get any updates on apps. It has been like this for a few days.
Help is much appreciated.
did you recently change dpi or anything? Maybe try to clear the google services and see if it resets your play store? If you did change dpi the google play store only recognizes certain DPI's its 160 for full tablet mode, 213 Phablet mode and 320 for phone mode. If im mistaken im sure someone will supplement me but ive had it where I couldnt find certain apps and either the dpi change or clearing the google services worked.
Thanks for your suggestions.
I have changed my DPI, but that was a while back--and I was able to see the apps that are now missing in the "INSTALLED" section of the Play Store. So I changed my DPI back to stock, and they are still missing.
I also did try to clear the Google Service Framework, cleared the cache in CWM, and even reflashed the ROM--still no joy.
Here's a small part of the applications missing from the Play Store (just from the first page of my app drawer):
Adobe Reader
After Focus Pro
Amazon
Amazon MP3
Amex
Amazon Appstore
Asphalt 6
Asphalt 7
Barcode Scanner
Bejeweled 2
Capital One
Chrome
Dead Trigger
Any other ideas? I'm wondering if it's thinking I'm geographically in a different place that these apps aren't available--though I'm in the US. I'm at the point where I'm pondering another ROM (I'm currently using the xXx).
test another rom, or restore a backup and test it...
although, it would be nice if the backup was a different OS version...like GB...
then you know its rom related...
good luck Sir...g
Use a file explorer/manager and go to data apps and see if the apps are still installed or listed. I am still confused myself on apps that are moved to the internal sd card as they cannot be moved to the external sd card. But if you installed the apps with an external sd card in and you have since removed the card then the apps fail to show as installed.
So basically what I am trying to say is if you switched or formatted your external sd card then the apps will disappear even though they are not physically on the external sd card.
Does any app you previously installed from the store show up in the installed apps list?
Either go to my apps in play store and uninstall and reinstall or go through root explorer or some file manager and unistall then reinstall.

The latest release of the xXx ROM (yesterday's) seems to have fixed the issue.
UPDATE: I guess not. Same issue as before.

What is best method to backup and restore?

Almost all my data has been stored by default to my internal storage. Pictures, DL's, I figure I will sync to my laptop and back them up there, but there must be an easier way all you flash addicts are doing it. And TB is still preferred method to back up and restore all apps, msgs and call logs?
Is there a good startup noob guide? Things change so fast around here I never know if the guides are now obsolete.

Clockworkmod recovery......for a complete backup...
and although TB is a great app, it seems to cause as many problems as it solves..
the app pulls data into a fresh build (on occasion) and causes problems when setting up..
I personally load "all" of my apps from the market again, on a fresh rom install....g
Most would store their downloads and pics on the external sd card. Contacts should be made google contacts that way they sync automatically. And Titanium backup works well. You just have to know what to restore. Issues are usually attributed to user error by not knowing fully what they are doing.
Taking everyone's valuable suggestions one step further, send backups from external sd card to Google Drive or Dropbox.

So you change the default settings of where to store dl's and photos every time you flash a new rom?

When I restore I log in to google and get TiBU.
I make sure it knows my backup folder location.
I restore the apps I backed up. Never select restore system apps.
Then I restore sms and calls. When I restored those apps they get their settins restore so I don't have to do anything.
So the only location I check/change is TiBU.
I used to CWM but now I use TWRP for flashing and creating backups. I also use TB pro and I have to say I haven't had any problems but I do only restore apps and their data and nothing else. I also have become a fan of My Backup. I am able to backup and restore how I have my icons saved on my screen. Makes it real easy and quick to get back up and running.

You can save the launcher and it's data with tibu also, no need for a second app...That's what i do
hell some launchers have a backup option built into them.
Serious? Well face palm myself. I never paid attention that TB did.

Just so you know, nothing on your internal or external SD is affected by flashing a ROM. Sounds like you think you might lose your pictures and downloads. They will be safe unless you format them.
OK, so I bought the pro version of TiBu, actually had a tough time getting it to sync with the free version and recognize the key on fresh rom install....
But my bigger problem after rom install hand TiBU restore...I am getting 3 errors and it caused the phone to hang so bad, had to do a factory reset and start from scratch with everything.
1. Calendar sync not working properly
2. Messages sync not working properly
3. Android.process.acore not working properly.
I would love to flash roms more often but dont out of fear of having to restore everything I liked back manually (I have to learn how to backup launcher too BC that is a big time factor in setup after a flash)

The trick is the System Apps. If they're Green then you can usually backup and restore them without any issue. If they're Red then you shouldn't back them up and restores won't be useful.
For some of the Green items (e.g., messages, bookmarks, call log) there's a Yellow equivalent which indicates XML. For these, you should favor the XML since it'll restore across ROMs better.
For all apps, if you switch between ROMs that are extremely different (for example, if you jump straight from stock GB to CM9(ICS) then there can be problems. You can usually get around these by uninstalling the offending app, installing from Play Store and then restoring just the data.

[Q]

good morning, a couple of weeks I have a pretty annoying problem with my Android smartphone.
when I try to load an image of a social network with the relevant app (facebook or twitter) the app crash and restart. I think everything happens when the system attempts to change the images to reduce the weight and to optimize the loading. happens either in the data network via wifi.
it all started and so quite by accident, do not remember doing updates or something. space on the internal memory there is, both on the sdcard0 (onboard memory) that the sdcard1 (sd additional). Use the cyanogenmod 10.1 (Android 4.2.2 jb) downloaded from this forum. I checked and is not a know bug, indeed it would seem only my problem.
I even tried deleting the phone and reinstall everything from scratch, clean rom and only facebook app crashes the same.
this is the log on the facebook app

and this is on the twitter app

Moved apps to SD card and now some wont show.

So I used TB to move my apps from my phone to my SD card. Now after it happened , I noticed half of my apps were missing from ym home screen and my app drawer. I re opened and tried to back all my apps from SD card back to phone but some of the apps don't even show in TB. So I went ahead and reinstalled 2 apps from the market. Whatsapp and kik, both of the data and everything is there, since whatsapp and kik logged me right into my account as it was left last time. I've attached two screenshots off my app manager. As you can see the apps are there but I have no way of reinstalling other than installing them back from the market. Is therre anyone to get my apps back apart from using the market?
Thanks in advance
bump please helpthe apps are there n the app manager
There was probably some problem while moving your apps, maybe it was TB s fault or maybe it is your sd card, i dunno, but i don't think you can restore them, you need to re-install them. You don't have a backup on TB? Maybe you can try;
1- Backup the faulty apps with TB,
2- Uninstall the apps,
3- Restore them.
Try to move the apps back from SD to phone storage without using TB (Use the same menus that you posted the screenshots from).
There are apps that don't behave well if the are moved to SD.
What version of android are you running?
