[Q] AOSP functionality and stability on S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used temasek's versions of 4.4.2 and they are absolutely phenomenal, I thank him for his hard work and contributions. However, there are some features that do not work 100% and that is no fault of temasek's, like the camera. For this reason I've been using stock Sammy for the past couple weeks.
When I was on pure AOSP ROMs, I found that video recording in the snapchat app did not work. I'm sure there have been many improvements in temasek's versions. Can anybody tell me if snapchat works 100% in temasek's AOSP versions?

Cyanogenmod 7.1 Stability and performance?

I was thinking of switching from checkrom to cyanogenmod, because its an aosp rom. Hows the general stability of cyanogenmod in the galaxy sII? Is the camera app perfect? I wanna know about stability and battery life too.. thanks.

I used to use CM7 but the devs sort of left it to work on CM9, which by the way is going to be awesome.
When is cm9 going to come out?the stable version I mean?

I've been using the Unofficial builds (link) of CM7 for a couple of weeks and had no problems. It has never crashed for me (some users have reported that it sometimes can crash when using the market). The camera app works with no problems, but the stock Android camera app don't have as many features as the Samsung camera app (I don't really care since I use a camera app from the market). The battery life is really good in my opinion. It definitely gets me through a day of normal usage, though it depends on how much you're using your phone.
And all the apps from the market work just fine?

i use cm7 b4 , the performance is awesome and stable
Choose the latest nightlies, they're 7.2 RC's. They're more stable than the stable release which in the end became a 7.1 RC, not to mention more features, etc...
The latest Buildbot official build is #116 on the Cyanogen Mirror Network. Codeworkx posted #117 on his blog here: http://codeworkx.de/wordpress/2011/12/17/cyanogenmod-7-12172011-galaxys2/
There are various unofficial builds, etc... but I haven't used any of them in a long time. There were some useful changes after #117 that the unofficial builds would have. None of them (that I can recall) critical to core functions however.

You seem to know how to get around so I suggest flashing the latest CM9 nightly For me (and almost everyone ) it works without any probs
I'm using a ROM compiled from the source by a developer here based in the latest google official source (4.0.4) with latest cm9 kernel 3.0.28 wich make the phone FULLY FUNCTIONAL, Check it out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604366
also watch my video in my signature where shows how the roms works.
Right now I'm on hydrogen 14.04 rom,
Its latest AOKP Based,
Everything works except autofocus in main camera and led in video camera...
Will try CM nightly soon

Even being Lazy i can Live without toggles, i rather a clean aosp experience
I suggest ICS Resurrection Remix Pro, amazing rom highly suggest it, it doesnt have toggles to worry about, just base AOKP goodness
Bro Hydrog3n is also AOKP based and moreover , i tried the camera update from westcrip's page and it didn't came to any use ....
Same problems there too just pinch zoom added in UI
Does the LED in camera works for you ?
And what about autofocus without macro mode on ?

The camera drivers for the SGS2 are proprietary which makes it more difficult for devs building from AOSP to get features working with the non-Touchwiz camera app, these issues exist in all AOSP based ROMs for the moment, I'm sure there are devs working on it but it may be quite a while before it works as well as it does on Samsung ROMs for obvious reasons. If you want flawless camera you are more likely to find it on Samsung stock at least in the short term.
But my camera works just fine on cm9

Working and working without bugs are 2 different things, there are still issues with the CM9 camera, and since the OP wanted flawless, I wouldn't call it that at the moment.

Yeah he's absolutely correct...
I've wiped the camera data and video LED started working, but autofocus really needs fixture...
BTW- what is proprietary??
Is it itbsomething that can't be modified or what ?

4.2 camera flash works on aosp.

Is there a way to write script or build prop to get the flash of the 4.2 camera working on a custom tw rom? Ive read, searched and tried different permissions for cameras but the 4.2 camera only seems to work on 4.2 aosp custom roms which in turn you lose tw functionality. Amy help or suggestions?

If I understand correctly, you're asking how to use flash without crashing under the 4.2 AOSP camera app, while using a TouchWiz ROM...
Why? The TouchWiz camera app is tailor suited for this very device and thus provides the absolute best results and control over the camera. Being on a TouchWiz ROM means you should absolutely only use the TouchWiz camera app, unless you need to do a Photosphere in which case you use the AOSP one.

I enjoy the simple interface on the 4.2 and it seems that it should be fixable as it is same device. As in... it works with flash correctly if using aosp rom...but with tw rom with aosp mods. The camera fc's if using flash..i was just seeking a possibility to fix this, i guess if it was that easy it would already be baked in?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Premium HD app
Pretty much. I have been waiting for this since the 4.2 camera came out and there hasn't been a fix. Some people have no issue whatsoever using it with flash but it's somewhat rare on TW roms. If it was an easy fix you can be sure it would have already been baked in.

[Q] Camera performance on AOSP-based ROMs?

does anyone else have problems with the stock AOSP camera app on AOSP-based ROMs? It's really frustrating. Sometimes the app will start but the screen will be black. Sometimes it won't start at all when I tap the icon. Swiping from the lockscreen to open it directly is a crapshoot; often it just crashes. I've had video recording problems too on occasion.

I don't have stability problems, just quality, because the aosp app isn't tuned for our camera like the TW one. are you sure it isn't rom or cm specific? like have you experienced on aosp roms based on cm, linaro, and actual aosp source?

I've tried CarbonROM, Liquid's ROM, and the CM10.2 nightlies. All have had issues with the camera app just not performing very well.
I haven't tried CM10.1's release build, though.
What AOSP ROMs have you tried where you didn't notice any camera app problems?
OctOS and smoothAOKP, but I've been on a TW kick lately.

[Q] Samsung Camera App on a custom rom???

I'm rooting my Verizon Galaxy S4 (16g) with Cyanogenmod but only thing that stops me right now is the camera. The camera on the phone works great with Samsung's camera software. But since I'm moving on from Touchwiz to Cyanogenmod, I'm curious if there is any way to keep the Samsung's camera app on a custom rom. Thank you.
Unfortunately the Samsung Camera App requires the Touchwiz framework. It doesn't work on AOSP roms. You can try the Eclipse rom. It has that AOSP look and feel but is touchwiz based so it has the Samsung Camera app on it. The dialer, settings, contacts, and notification panels are all AOSP.

You can only use it on a TW rom. It hooks into proprietary TW framework that we can't get source code for to port to AOSP.
If you use a GPE rom, such as the one by Danvdh, it's a little different. Since these are built on the GPE device base they're still AOSP roms but they use Samsung drivers for the camera. It's still as not as good as the full TW camera, but with a third party app (Google's camera still sucks) it's the best camera experience you'll get on AOSP on this phone.

All very true.. Have you used that Lenovo Super Camera??? I thougt it was really cool, comparable to the Wiz Camera, just depending on which version you found it either required all sorts of permissions/libraries . if we could scrounge up just an easy to install... No permissions Lenovo that'd be cool

Yeah I tried it right when it got pulled from that Intel phone Lenovo came out with, I've never been much of a camera aficionado though. I thought the gallery app was really cool but a lot of Chinese all over the place lol.
