[Q] In doghouse - Bricked my wife's i9205 - Samsung Galaxy Mega

I bought her an unlocked i9205 back in December. It was rooted already. I put SU and TWRP on it and did a backup of it. Well she kinda trashed it so I did a TWRP restore which ended with an error. Now it just boots to the Samsung logo. Do I need to load a new ROM now? I'm hoping I can find something to just put on an SD card and flash with TWRP. Any help is good. I have a PC setup with drivers for it. PDANET, ADB, etc.. No Odin though.

I can get into TWRP recovery. Will any ROM work with that? Can you recommend any ROMs? The stock one was fine but it was so full of Samsung bloat it really didn't have much available RAM left of it's 1.5GB after boot. I guess I don't care as long as it's stable and works so I can get out of the doghouse...LOL

Grab Odin and flash stock ROM
*S.O.F.A*2SHAYNEZ*K.C.C.O*

Thanks guys. I'm trying a MegaFireMj2V3 just cuz I already downloaded it. Stock kinda sucked. I'd look and she'd have 3 apps running with low memory warnings. It was rooted and I'd uninstall a lot of bloat, but somehow it would auto update all the bloat right back within minutes. I'll go back to stock if needed but I want to try something de-crapped first.
- Joe

It's worse now.
Ok. Flashing MegaFireMj2V3 was a fail. It seems as if the system partition always fails. So I got Odin and a stock ROM. That failed also, and now I just have a couple of little red lines telling me to use Kies Recovery or something. And I can't get Kies to connect to it. My PC sees it. Samsung USB drivers install. Kies sees it plugged in but just lays there saying CONNECTING. I paid like $400 for this turkey for my wife for Christmas and now she's yelling at me that I blew it up.. I guess I can keep trying Kies but it's looking fail so far. This really stinks. I bought it on Amazon. It's supposed to have a 2 year warranty. It's Unlocked International Version with Warranty. But I don't know what country?

I don't have any recovery anymore. It boots to a small failed update message. It's toast unless I can get Kies to work somehow.
- Joe

there is a way to use Kies to get Stock on there.. It involves typing in the words of your model or something like that./
maybe someone here can remember better than I.
On the Note, Ive seen it alot. there is a certian way that you have to type in the make and model and it will stock-ize you.
That is "IF" you can get it to connect to Kies..
I'll suggest you use a different USB cable..
Some will and some wont connect.....
good luck

Why don't you to flash a stock rom with Odin, I think you have dounload mode (as you don't have custom recovery it is the only way) ?
Search YOUR rom on sammobile, or the same level (not possible to doungrade you shall have more problem ! )

Lol this also happened to me but to recover, since you now only have download mode, connect it to Odin on your PC and find a brand new firmware. Try the latest versions because that's your best shot of recovering it. It doesn't matter what region you pick as long as that the model number is the same. Do note however that if you fail the flash KNOX will trip up and you will void the warranty. If it doesn't fail, it should boot up to the Samsung logo. If it still bootloops, go into recovery (since it should be there now), and wipe everything. Then your phone should boot up nicely.
Note: New firmware contains KNOX so rooting and installing custom recovery is now dangerous.

[Q] Are there Rooting options?

Dear all,
I'm having a connectivity problem with my Samsung Galaxy SII and I think I tried everything in all combinations possible that I could find in many many forums (it charges, but is not recognized. I tried: 3 different cables, 2 computers xp/w7, modem/pda code, 100x uninstalling kies and still no connection, no connection with ODIN, updating drivers, removing sd-card, debug mode on/off, mass storage, cleaning USBport with alcohol). Do you know any other options that I might try, or can I just assume my USB port is dead?
Anyway, my real question is the next. Is it possible to root the device in a way without using the USB cable? My from booting from SD-Card or so? I would like this in order to be able to update the firmware in the future with on-device apps, considering the USB-port is dead. For all the options I found in other forums, like ABD Wifi, Mobile ODIN and CWM, you need root on forehand.
It would be great if you could give me some suggestions! Thanks
Btw, I'm nowhere near a service point, and at this point would like to keep the phone with me, since it's working fine besides this problem
Have you installed the Samsung USB driver?

I don't want to jump to the wrong conclusion here.. but have you actually put your phone into download mode for this? ie starting from off.. hold vol down + home button, power on whilst still holding the buttons.
Maybe SuperOneClick ? Don't ask me the how/why/in's & out's of it as I've never used it. Search for it on here.
As far as I know, there is no way to root without using a computer connected via USB.
If the USB port is faulty, and you on stock, which it sounds like you are, get Samsung to repair it.

Has anyone tried to create an update.zip able to be used via the stock 3e recovery??
I don't know if it's possible to root this way but if it is it would be very handy.

If your phone is playing up/USB appears cactus and you're still running stock firmware/haven't rooted it/messed around with it in any way, why tempt fate ? Return it for warranty service/replacement, and when you get it back & know everything's working, then you can flash whatever rom/kernel you want or root the phone.
Last thing you want to do is root it or flash non-stock firmware & then have the phone die on you & be unable to go back to stock. Goodbye warranty.
You mean ODIN does not recognize your device? If so, make sure KIES is not running at the back. Did you updated KIES? Maybe you can go to previous version...

Seems to work for the ICS ROM mentioned in the thread, you should be able to download all required files via the phone, you have root, and then flash whichever ROM you like.

I flashed it with this non-stock firmware. I don't have any warrenty, since I'll just have to pay for the repairs. Probably, they'll use a "water damage" argument for my faulty usb-port, as I read in many other forums.

Root S2 I9100GDDKL1 (India)
Hi,
I would like to root my S2 to install Titanium Backup and setCPU to have better control over my phone (remove bloatware, control battery and performance and such). Not looking to install a custom ROM at the moment.
My handset specs are:
Baseband version: I9100GDDKL1
Running: Android version 2.3.6
Build number: Gingerbread.XWLA1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 [email protected]#2
I have been searching for an insecure and original PDA that matches the above to flash my device but have not been successful so far.
I initially started off attempting to Root using DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su but was unsuccessful as my PC was not recognizing my phone.
I hope someone can help. BTW I am a Noob.
This link is to a "G" model kernel flashable via Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506954
Just make sure you only flash items for the I9100G and not the I9100 international version.
Have fun.

Thanks a bunch
Thanks yall,
The root worked like a charm. I was able to install all the root tools that I required and good to go now.
I used Odin ver 1.85 and flashed superatmos v.3.0 kernel. I then rooted the device using superoneclick (I could not get the S2 Root to work for some reason - It kept saying that the device was not connected)
Next steps:
Plannning to flash the original kernel back to remove the warning sign on startup - Any advice?
I am sold on the merits of rooting. The flexibility is amazing.
P.S. Could someone help me with re-flashing the original kernel? I tried searching for it over the net but could not locate anything similar.

So here's the dealio guys, I've been researching about rooting and custom ROMs and such since I got my S2 (i777) a few months ago. I really don't like Touchwiz, and the stock ICS look is just better. So I found a nice-looking ROM (the AOKP ROM), rooted my phone with no problems using Siyah/Odin, and went ahead and put the ROM in an external SD card that I bought just for this purpose. So I boot into recovery mode (with ROM Manager), and then... nothing. I try to boot up my phone but it just flashes the start screen showing my model number, then just turns right back off. I've tried taking out my battery, still no dice. BUT, I can still get into download mode (but not recovery). So is there any way to restore the backup I made before installing the ROM using the download mode?
Thanks!

yea, in order to flash a custom ROM, you need custom recovery, ahh hell, been so long i forgot about having a rooted system required or not.
think you do, so should be able to get a rooted package, flash that, enter recovery and flash the ROM that you like.
Maybe someone will chime in and refresh my memory on the rooted system requirement.
U can flash a custom kernel .tar with Odin. There are some siyah tar files floating around. Or u could make a .tar yourself if u really wanted to. Once flashed it'll have cwm built in and u can flash whatever u want.

You only need root to install and use the Mobile Odin app, which is used for installing a custom kernel without tripping the flash counter. Once you've got Mobile Odin, download the custom kernel (e.g. Siyah) you want (ICS kernel if you're gonna install an ICS rom, same for GB), extract the zImage to your phone, and use Mobile Odin to install it. Note that if you're currently running GB and flash an ICS kernel, your phone won't boot but you can still get into CWM, which is all that matters because then you can flash the ICS rom of your choice and then your phone will boot.
Alternatively, you can do what Phalanx said and flash a custom kernel using PC version of Odin. Only difference between this and using Mobile Odin is you trip the flash counter, which can be fixed in any ICS rom by using the TriangleAway app.
The custom kernel will include CWM, which can then be used to flash any ROM/mod; in fact CWM is the ONLY safe method of flashing/wiping/restoring/backing up anything from that point forward.

As long as you're running ICS, just download TriangleAway from the Play Store. That'll reset the flash counter to 0 and get rid of the yellow triangle that appears on start up.

Bricked S2 too!
I finally bricked my first phone. Its been a long ride but it caught up to me. I have had three different android phones within about 4 years and have successfully rooted all three myself and have successfully flashed them over and over close to 1000 times between all three phones including modems, kernals, gapps, themes etc. So what gives? Why today? To be honest I don't know. But here is what happened...
The past few days I have been going back and forth between different kernals for this device to try to get something that won't freeze up. ( I liked browsing on this phone but I would get freeze ups and therefore would flash something new to try and resolve it.) Today my phone froze so I tried a simple reboot. The boot then did a freeze on the kernal's "intro" picture. It wasn't a bootloop it just frooze. (I was on XWLPT with Skyfire Kernal). I decided to reboot into recovery and flash a different kernel. I flashed NEAK The flash went halfway then stuck and froze. I rebooted to try to get back to the phone's main screen. This time it would not boot. I couldn't tell if it was in bootloop or was froze. I went back into recovery. Here I should of wiped everything but in the back of my mind I thought I could just do it in odin if I lost recovery. So I tried flashing Siyah for sammy roms. This is when I lost everything. It froze in cmw on the flash again but this time when I tried going back into recovery it stayed on the Galaxy SII screen. So I put the phone in download mode and started Odin up. When trying to flash anything in Odin I got stuck on nand write start! I never heard of this. I thought Odin would work as this is how I rooted the phone when I first got it. Last thing I did was install kies which couldn't even connect to the phone. So all I am left with is download mode and taking way more caution when flashing. I think it may have been a case of the brickbug. Even though I was on a I9100 rom and using "safe" kernels I believe something happened to lock me out from writing anything to the phone.
As long as you don't mind overwriting any data on the device you can use Kies for a complete restore. Download the latest version from Samsung, then click on the Tools selection, then "Firmware Upgrade and Initalization." You'll need your devices model number and serial number from underneath the battery. Follow the directions to put the device in download mode and proceed. You'll end up with a new factory-fresh reload.

Now this i didn't know. My SII has been acting really weird ever since I unrooted. It won't let me update my firmware past 2.3.4 for some reason. So if I did this, it will most likely fix that problem?
Alright, I connected my phone to Kies, and went to Tools>Firmware Upgrade and Initialization, and it says my device does not support initialization. It also says this right under my device info:
Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Current firmware version: PDA:KH7 / PHONE:LE5 / CSC:KH7 (ATT)
Ugh, really getting tired of this. Why is my phone being retarded? I don't think I want to bother rooting anymore, it seems like more of a hassle than a good thing. I really don't want to have to break my phone to get a replacement with my warranty. How do I fix this, guys?!

i9100 won't boot rom or recovery after trying to install a CM nightly

Hi Guys,
Sorry to bother you with this, but I'm out of ideas...
I decided to root my i9100 using this guide9.
As I was doing this, the recovery rom would reboot when using the volume buttons to navigate (only on the first "page") - This was easily worked around by using the touchscreen, but now I'm wondering if this was the start of my issues...
I applied the SU busy box installer, and got root. I installed rom manager, and noticed that it seemed to lock up when doing certain things. I put this down to CWM saying there was no official mod for the i9100.
The next day I decided to try and install a CM10.1 nightly, so I took a backup, wiped cache and data, and applied the rom and gapps.
When I rebooted, the phone wouldn't finished booting, it just sat at the initial logo screen.
After that, I tried following this recovery guide but the odin flash failed at around 80% (I retried and the same happened again).
Since then I've had difficulty getting in to recovery mode. I've tried flashing various stock roms with odin, and trying to restore with Kies.
In Kies I get as far as it conencting to the phone in download mode, but it pops up a "notice" in a foreign language - presumably Korean (and I can't copy the text to even attempt a google translation).
I tried flashing Siyah-s2-v5.0.1 to get a different recovery - that seemed to have a garbled progress bar, before hanging when I tried to wipe /data again.
When I use odin to flash a stock rom - is it supposed to restore absolutely everything? I'm not sure how I'm still getting problems if this is the case. Any ideas on what to try next?
(The current stock rom I'm try ing to use is this one)
Let me know if I'm missing any info, and thanks in advance for any help.
Using rom manager would have been the start of your problems-not the temp cwm recovery in the rooting guide.
If you can boot into download mode then I would download LP7 stock rom, disable kies and flash that with Odin.
{go back to your iphone since you are an android noob}
Thanks for the reply.
Rom manager didn't work properly for me, so I stopped using it. I used the temp cwm recovery to install the CM nightly.
I can boot in to download mode, but I've already tried an LP7 rom, - as with the others, it doesn't boot.
Any ideas on how to tell why it isn't booting? logcat doesn't seem to want to to work. Not sure if it's broken / too early in the boot process / etc

I9100 right?
Try this:
- Download this ROM.
- Kies installed? uninstall it, re install it. Close it all up with Task manager (3 or 4 applications running).
- Flash ROM via Odin (CSC, MODEM, PHONE).
- If that doesn't fly, try another usb port & usb cable. Another PC would also be recommended.
- Repeat the process.
- Still no luck? try flashing a previous siyah version.
- No go? repeat all the above.
- Let us know how you did.

Focus on getting a ROM to boot.
That ROM will install stock recovery.

For some reason, I can't get Odin to flash that rom - it just hands for a while at the start of data.img, before saying "Complete(Write) operation failed."
There a .pit file in the archive, although the link says not to repartition (so I didn't).
Some roms seem to get written, some don't, I'm not sure why...

Odin failed about 80% through flashing (step 4, after taking the ICS steps). I tried flashing the kernel afterwards, which flashed, but didn't help with my boot issues.

Of course, I was just trying to get a better understanding of how things work - I'd settle for anything booting right now.
I was meaning how far did you go with his guide. He says (near the end) to flash a bootloader/kernel/rom.
You can try everything in his guide, but understand about the risks involved with pit and bootloaders.

He's right.
Keep trying, consider pit files & bootloaders as a last resort.
Tried everything?
Used another usb cable for the flash? tried in another PC? tried in a laptop?
Are you sure kies is all shut down?
I've read about so many people having the same issue than you, they keep on flashing as in trial & error and most times they come out winners.

I guess I'll keep at it then.
I'd tried another cable with kies shut down. Just tried a different machine, and flashed the ROM you suggested with heimdall. It flashed without complaining (unlike odin), but I'm still getting a boot loop.
Looking at the initial recovery guide I was following - I suspect that I might've flashed the bootloader (the guide shows in bold which file goes in which box, so I probably loaded them all). Maybe this is the source of my troubles...
I also noticed that heimdall can pull data from the phone too - if I can pull and mount these, am I likely to find any useful log files?
For completeness (and anyone else who finds themselves with the same issue): It seems I hit the EMMC brick bug, which rendered some of my EMMC storage unusable.
This helpful chap came up with a workaround to partition around the dead space. (Please read the post carefully and make sure this really is your problem before flashing!)
That method will let you know what part of your memory is corrupted. It's done via recovery as far as I remember.
Did you bring your device back to life?

Yes, that's right. IIRC, I flashed a working recovery with Odin, then did most of the work from adb shell.
I got my device back to life for the most part. I get the occasional hang but haven't investigated much (have since bought a Nexus 4, so not using the S2 so much).
Just thought I'd share for the next poor soul who has the same problem

[Q] SGH-i717 Home Keys not working

Hi there i have a SGH-i717 with AT&T 2.3.4 Stock installed..I did have Cyanogen 10.1 and Avatar all installed in the last 72hrs..I have wiped all that and did a return to the stock AT&T thinking that my HOME keys would return..NO LUCK..The problems started about 4 days ago when the phone started turning itself off automatically..I changed custom ROM's etc to try and fix the problem..then i read to use Kies to try and do a Firmware Upgrade and Initialization to go back to the start when i first got the phone..But now Kies will NOT recognise the phone..I have re-installed drives, Kies to no avail..Any tips ?
Also someone suggested to flash this kernel h0tcakez-JB-Kernel-v2.3.5-ALT but when i tried through system recovery is gives a falied error..
I have nothing on the phone i need to worry about loosing...Cheers

If you are on stock 2.3.4 and tried to flash that kernel .. that is why it failed .. it would be the wrong kernel for that rom. Did you flash a stock rom in recovery? If so then I would suggest using oden to return to stock . then see what you end up with.

Thanx for you reply..I did however flash stock 2.3.4 from oden..I deleted everything in recovery then went to oden and flashed the stock rom..Should i unroot/unbrick flash from oden?
That article about returning to original settings in Kies seems to make sense except for the fact that i cannot get Kies to recognise the phone...
Are we talking about Software ou Hardare issue in your opinion?
Cheers
Could be a hardware issue. Try this ... Put the phone into download mode then connect to the pc. Use the cable that came with the phone. Also use a port on the back of the pc ..not a hub. Then open kies and do the emergency firmware update.
Also ... When you used Odin to go to stock ..you installed the 3e recovery ..that's why it failed to flash. Which is a good thing. That kennel would have boot looped you.

Definitely not a hardware issue, there where some changes made IIRC in the kernel driver files, once flashed they prevented the homerow buttons from working normally, the only way I ever found to make them work right was to flash the Flappjaxxx alternate kernel series, let it boot, then return completely to stock!
If you dig around, FJ's alt kernel's are around here somewhere!

My work schedule is absolute hell, and due to people flaking at work I have been called in 2x to cover on my only days off...
Needless to say, im about to pass out, so im going to make this useless post...
Either I, or someone else can link you to a FJ rom, and the FJ alternate kernel that match, what you will need to do prior is make sure you have EVERYTHING you want/need, backed up to GMail (in the case of Phone logs, SMS and MMS with the Backup to GMail app, yes, im whoring this fantastic app out) AND to your computer, NO not your SD card, but your computer!
Make sure you have the latest recovery (TWRP 2.5.0.0 is what I have, but whatever TWRP is latest will do), wipe everything, then install the rom, boot, wait 10min, reboot into recovery, flash the alt kernel, boot, wait 10min, then test the home/back/menu/search key row, they should work, at this point, you CAN go back to the 2.x.x rom you where running, but if you have an i717, I have had nothing but love for the Stock rom update on AT&T once I performed a complete ODIN to it (flashing the ones here on the forum's resulted in random reboots here and there, and while less then ever before, still annoying, after an ODIN however, havent had a random reboot yet!).
There are issues with the GNote i717 JB release, many posted here, and quite a few here:

What ROM? That will work if you still have access to a reset method inside the UI. If you have a ROM on there you must be running MDK, can't you just wipe the data off the phone with CWM or TWRP? The Root binary should be un-installed when you boot back up. Just delete the SuperSu app and you should be home free.

Please correct me if im wrong or misunderstanding what you are saying but i dont believe that would work. After the data wipe you could reinstall the original ROM couldn't you? Long as you have the file on your microsd card. That would probably just reflash your ROM though, it may not erase the binaries. Damn. Well I'm sure there is a way to do it like this. It's just been a while since I've messed around with the TWRP recovery mode.
Do you have cwm on the phone. . If you do your sol. You can't wipe that without an odin to my knowledge. . But if your just rooted.. triangle away. .undo root. Remove su factory reset. . Should be clear. .

Hey so I'm in a similar boat - I have a Verizon S4 with the ME7 firmware that the usb port will no longer connect and won't charge unless the phone is off (and only when it's plugged in to a computer, not a wall). It was rooted so I followed the instructions above to unroot it.
But here's where I think I'm in trouble - I had loaded the TWRP bootloader before I found out it wouldn't work with the ME7 firmware, and never bothered flashing the phone back (stupid, I know). Is there no way to flash back to stock rom via the SD card? Right now when I go into recovery mode, it just goes to the "Downloading" screen. Does anybody know a way I can get TWRP off?
Sorry hope I'm not thread-jacking but this is the most relevant thread I've found to ask this in.

The only way I know to solve your problem is to reflash ME7 using ODIN. If you have the ME7 firmware already you can't use the TWRP or CWM recovery partitions at all. With out those operating your stuck using ODIN and your USB port. Have you tried another cable?

Yeah I've tried a couple different cables, a couple different pc's, a couple different chargers. It will only charge when it's off, connected to a pc. When turning it on "usb cable connected" flashes up top, even though it's not. When it is connected and turned on and below 15%, it tells you to connect to a power source. I searched this and low and behold, several other s4 owners are having the same issue. It started happening two nights ago after I didn't get the phone on a charger before it died, then I charged it overnight - next morning it wouldn't start up. I don't think it has anything to do with having the twrp bootloader though, because it had been on there a couple weeks and restarted more than once with no issues.
If anyone knows how to fix the usb thing, I've got...lets say a $50 reward up for grabs. Not much but it's all I can afford to not void my warranty.

The problem with the custom recovery partition you have on there is that it prevents you from doing a factory reset in the settings menu. At least as far as I'm aware. If mobile ODIN worked on our phones I would say download that and re-flash with the tar file on your msd card. SafeStrap might be a way to give this a try. I can't link to another forum in here but I would look into that.
Maybe replace the usb port yourself

Well I'm not exactly sure what did it, but I used a small flathead screwdriver to bend the connector inside the usb port up a little, as I read that can be an issue with these phones, and used an old cable from a blackberry, and one of the two let me get it connected to the pc and flashed back to the stock rom via ODIN. Still won't charge with any combination of wall chargers/cables, so I'm going to take it in to Verizon. But it's a huge sigh of relief knowing that they won't be able to claim I damaged it by putting a custom bootloader on. Thanks for the input. Hope OP gets his problems sorted also.

That may have been true, I might have been trying the wrong buttons to get to recovery. Still learning some stuff. But the twrp loader definitely changed the splash and download screen enough that I needed to get it off so that no red flags will be thrown when I take it in to Verizon to have them look at it.
Thanks for everybody's help! I managed to connect to ODIN by pushing the usb in different ways until I got a connection and sent it back to Verizon completely stock
