[Q] from rom 4.0.3 to higher ROM - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i have a Samsung SGII i9100 with android 4.0.3 basedband version I9100XXLPX and i would like to upgrade it to latest version... i saw 4.4.2 is available.
1. is it possible to upgrade it without issue ?
2. how can i backup actual ROM and all data in the memory into a file or browsable file structure for PC usage (contacts, notes, messages, or pictures,..) ?
3. where can i find information about backup procedures ?
thx.

1 - Yes it is possible to upgrade without issues, just make sure you have the right CWM installed. There are some links around.
2- Backup all your apps and data using a app, make sure your files, pics and other data are stored safely on your SD card and transfer it to your PC to make another backup incase your SD card goes caput.
3- Installation instructions for the ROM should be on the first page of the ROM.
Press thanks if I helped.

It is possible to upgrade without issue, just like its possible to win the uk lottery (odds of 14 million to 1).
Read the kk threads so you are aware of any bugs etc.

[Q] Is my methodology correct?

First of all, love the forum. It's been a huge help in educating me about the rooting process and different uses for roms and such. I'm here pretty much seeking confirmation on what I'm about to do. Please bear with me.
I'm using LG P500 Optimus One, running Froyo 2.2.2, firmware v10g. Since the new Official Gingerbread update is coming in a few days/weeks, I don't plan on installing a rom. However, I wish to backup my phonebook and game data so the update won't remove it. Having said so, I will need Titanium Backup which needs rooting.
Here's how I plan on doing it:
1. Enable USB debugging mode.
2. Use an old but recently formatted SD card and copy-paste GingerBreak v1.2.apk on it.
3. Insert SD card and install Gingerbreak (but not use app2sd after installation)
4. Open Gingerbreak after installation has completed and press the "root" button. (Should I expect any problems here?)
5. After rooting process finishes, the phone should reboot itself. (Again, should I be worrying here?)
6. Check to see if SuperUser is installed to signal a successful rooting process. (Is there anything else that I need to install?)
7. Download Titanium Backup from the Android Market.
8. Batch backup phonebook and apps with game data
9. Transfer backup files to my laptop for safekeeping.
10. Uninstall Titanium Backup.
11. Open Gingerbreak and click "unroot" (I don't know what happens here. Does the phone reboot itself?)
12. Once Official 2.3.X update is available, update as I would with firmware. (This should work since I unrooted, right?)
13. Repeat process 1-7. Restore phonebook and apps with game data.
14. Repeat process 10-11.
Is all of this correct? Should I expect any problems with this process? Should I install anything else after rooting to make this work?
No...your procedure is correct ...and you can backup contacts by exporting them to SD...and apps by using some app which work without a root alternatively....not sure whether you can't install official 2.3.3 if you rooted or not..but mostly you can

Ah yes, but how about game data/scores? What app can you suggest that can backup installed apps with said data?
well truly speaking i am also a tb fan...and i am 90% sure you can have official 2.3.3 even if you have root ....just get it confirmed and proceed
My goodness. Someone ever told you, you talk too much. Just do whatever you want to do with following instruction carefully. Then come back if you are facing any problem. Here people will surely help you.

[Q] internal SD memory

i rooted my phone then flash cm9 about month ago before that my internal sd memory was enough for me as i have some episodes and movies on and still got 4-5 gbs but now its only have 2.3gb free then i notice that titanium backup folder is about 700 mb and cynogen mod folder is about 1.7 Gb i wnated to know do have to keep these folder or i can simply copy them in my laptop and delete them from my phone.
do they create a problem or any kind of instability for rom or phone ? wanted to know before doing something.

Yes both titanium backup and Clockworkmod folder(if it's named Cyanogenmod I am not sure what it is) both are backups, Clockworkmod folder contains your rom backups and titanium backup contains your app backup, You can safely copy them to your computer and use them when needed and so you can remove them from your phone for extra storage space .
Using GT - I9100
I thank those who give helpful comments
I expect the same from others.
sorry yes foder name is Clockworkmod.. and thank u soo its mean removing them would not create any problem right. and why do i need my rom back (Clockworkmod folder) cm9 is working very fine
It was made by cm9 rom when first installing as a precaution.
If you are happy with your phone and don't believe you need it, you can erase it.
precaution for what?

If you tried out any other roms and failed or didn't like it you can easily return back to your cm9 rom If you created a backup in CWM, this is a very useful and important feature, CWM by default creates backup in Clockworkmod folder.
For example I installed a audio driver which was not very good as expected and after I removed it, the audio driver which I had before wasn't reverted and i virtually had no sound, because of a backup i had I just easily restored to my former situation before the driver installation, so in short its like a factory reset but along with the apps we installed.

[Q] My questions about android

Hi, I got myself an android phone 5 days ago and i want to learn how to use it properly so i search everything about androids phone and i think this is the best site among other sites to post this question.
1)Transferring SD partition
At first, i didn't know what is root and after learning it, i rooted my phone cause it required in order to increase my memory. I recently bought i new one which is 32GB and i already partition it(using minitool partition wizard) and i was wondering how to transfer all my installed data , phone data and my previous SD to my new one. If i simply copy paste it how about my installed app on my phone? will it cause my app to stop working? if i use titanium back up,can you show me step by step how to use it.
2)Rom manager or Goomanager (custom ROM)
I heard a lot of people saying "Do not use it","too dangerous, too risky","might brick your phone" (i don't even get it, you'll just have to follow the instruction or procedure right?)
-stock Rom and custom Rom
what so different about them? (i know for the fact that custom Rom updates quickly)but i need more information.
-what makes you want to install custom Rom, is it worth it?
-custom Rom can save battery life, make it faster, can play heavy games etc... but HOW? is that mean stock Rom drains more battery( my phone cant even survive one night), cant play heavy game or makes you lag?
-what would happen to my stock rom if i install custom rom?
-if i installed custom rom, will it cause my phone any problems? like app stop working?
-will it use up my ram or rom memory?
-why bother change another custom rom if you'll just use the popular ones?
-What else can you do on custom rom?
3) Clockworkmod recovery and Titanium back up
-Whats the different about them?
They say clockworkmod is like cloning your phone when you back up
They say Titanium back up all apps and data is like the same as cloning your phone too right or not? so whats the difference?
what should i use?
when backing up to install new custom rom, what should i choose? they say if you using titanium back up might cause some serious problem.
4)Recommend or important app
what should i install to improve my phone? like cleaner, battery save (there many kinds, i want to know which is the best)
5) Any advice for new android user
Kindly answer at least one of my noob questions that is easily to understand.
THANK YOU in advance.
wow... you have so many doubts... hahaha
Ok, here we go:
root concept is a little difficult to understand (and to explain) to anybody that never used Linux before. To put it simple, root means that you have administrator privileges, so you can do anything you desire (even break your phone very easily ).
I dunno if a plain copy can works with the ETX partition, but you can do this: Move your apps to your phone again, disable Link2SD, put your new SD, enable Link2SD and move all to the EXT partition.
If I misunderstood this, and you don't have partitioned your actual SD, forget that I said before. Copy all from the old SD to the new one, there aren't problems at all.
I don't recommend to use Titanium Backup if you're installing a completely different ROM, since it can cause problems (if you're reinstalling your actual ROM, is OK to use it).
Custom ROM advantages:
quick updates, as you said.
lightweight, only few apps will be installed (without the bunch of crap that carriers or manufacturers usually add).
faster than stock, mostly cases.
Many features that stock ROM doesn't have (depends of ROM and the developer).
You should choose your ROM wisely, since not all ROMs are enough stable and can cause weird problems (as forced closes, slow down the phone, random reboots...). If you're unsure, try the popular ones and choose one.
Titanium backup doesn't make a clone of your phone, only the apps and its data. As I said before, I don't recommend to use it if you're moving to another ROM (you can try to install the app as usual, and only restore its data using Titanium Backup, it's better than restore app+data).
Recovery, in the other hand, can make a full backup (even the EXT partition is saved), so this is the right way to backup when you're installing a new ROM.
You will not need anything if you choose a good ROM
The usual: search, read, search again, and understand before do anything
I hope I didn't leave something unanswered, let me know if so

Thank you for the quick reply.
wow... you have so many doubts... hahaha - got tired of iphone 5 so i switch to samsung galaxy since its new, ive got to be careful.
what ways can can your phone be brick? so that i could avoid it.
I don't recommend to use Titanium Backup if you're installing a completely different ROM, since it can cause problems (if you're reinstalling your actual ROM, is OK to use it). what do you mean by "if you're reinstalling your actual ROM, is OK to use it"? are you saying if i want to revert it back to stock rom?
can you explain more clearly about question no.3 i still didn't get it.
lightweight, only few apps will be installed (without the bunch of crap that carriers or manufacturers usually add) - can you explain it like giving me examples? what examples of crap usually add? if i really did installed a custom rom, what are not from the stock are now on new rom. wont it effect my phone app data?
other said that if you installed a custom rom it might get brick.(even if the instruction followed carefully)
so what should i use to back up my phone in order to install custom rom and how? what would happen to my stock rom if i install custom rom?
how can i sure if the custom rom is suited for my phone? cyanogenmod the most popular custom rom, people said it can slow or cause problems too.
how much memory is required on installing custom rom.
should i use rom manager or goomanager?
-difference between clockworkmod recovery( and its functions) and Titanium Backup
When backing up consumes a lot of memory?
"Titanium backup doesn't make a clone of your phone, only the apps and its data" data-did you mean data from phone too? like contacts etc... if i use titanium backup and reset my phone, will it return to when i bought it? i was wondering if it will delete some icons like gallery icon youtube icon etc...because my phone is rooted.
if i use clockworkmod recovery, will it return to the way it is? some say dont use it cause it have a lot of problems.
"I dunno if a plain copy can works with the ETX partition, but you can do this: Move your apps to your phone again, disable Link2SD, put your new SD, enable Link2SD and move all to the EXT partition." so i should put all my installed app to my phone and then remove my sd card and copy all the files, cache to my new one. is that it?
Recommend or important app to improve my phone
my phone cant survive even a day. sometimes if i play games it sudden close itself and lag. if i install custom rom,can it solve my problems?
When backing up consumes a lot of memory?
Can you tell name of your mobile?
And yes, ROMs tend to make phones better in performance
ClockworkMod backup usually takes 200-300 mb for high end ICS/JB devices

Samsung Galaxy S4
:good: BTW, never heard of S4 lagging but you can try Greenify app.
And why do you need to expand memory?
1. Transferring data to SD card is not only copy paste them. Not that simple.. U have to use an application that able to move data to SD safely without problem. If the data u wanted to move is like Pictures, Music, Video then it could be done by a simple copy paste.
2. Stock ROM and Custom ROM is two different things. Basically stock ROM is the one that officially has been tested its compatibility to phones which means it is safe to use it. While Custom ROMs are different. Not all of Custom ROMs are tested and u use it by ur own risk. It is true that by using custom ROM could improve ur phone because basically the Custom ROM was maded by other people that wanted to improve what Stock ROM didn't have. Custom ROM could harm ur phone if it is not used in a right way or that the ROM doesn't match ur phone.
3. Clockworkmod Recovery and Titanium backup are basically a similar app. They both meant to backup ur data. The thing is, clockwork use to backup ur ROM in case u want to change ur current ROM and maybe u want it back again. While Titanium usually used for backup ur phone's application and data such as apps, ur phone setting, ur contacts, etc.
4. I have some apps that I can suggests to u as a basic apps for rooted users.
- ROM toolbox Pro. It help u to improve ur ROM in working.
- Terminal emulator. It help to put command on ur phone if u want to order ur phone to run some settings. Simply it is like MsDos in Windows.
- Link2SD. Help u to organize apps if u need to move some apps that cannot be moved manually from ur setting (like ur stock apps, Twitter, Facebook, etc)
- (optional) Root explorer. Help u to manage data in ur phone or SD and change their permissions.

[Q] How to update Samsung Galaxy SI9000 from rooted android 2.2 to newer version?

Hi,
A friend of mine rooted my samsung mobile Galaxy S I9000 with a android 2.2 version. I cannot contact him anymore to help me with the update and I am really a newbie in this rooting world. So, I am coming on this forum to have some advice. I read information on rooting your device, in which everything is explained very well, but could not find information on how to update once a device was rooted (probably I did not search in the right place). What I did so far is:
1) Taking backup of my pics (by manually drag and drop the folder on my pc), SMS and call logs (with sms backup + app), syncronized my contacts with gmail so that I can recover them later on and backup the music folder. I installed backup Titanium to back up my apps on my SD card.
But now, I am stuck with some questions (could you guide me where to find the information?):
1) Which most recent version of Android is supported on the device I have?
2) Is there important information that I forgot to back up?
3) Is there a guide with step by step procedure on which files I have to download on my pc and which procedure to follow? Or could you advice me some useful links?
thanks!

About to add Recovery, Root & Rom - Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-i9300

Hi all,
Firstly thanks in advance for any help you are able to offer.
I am about to add a Recovery, Root & Custom Rom to my ageing Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-i9300, running JellyBean 4.3
Also I have a Macbook, so no PC available.
I am based in the UK.
So I want to add TWRP as my recovery, followed by SuperSU, back up the phone with Titanium Back Up and then add an appropriate CyanogenMod.
Rather than using apps to install, I'd prefer to flash TWRP to my phone via Jodin3 on my Mac, then add SuperSU by installing from zip, followed by installing CyanogenMod from zip too.
I have watched countless videos and read plenty here on the forum, including a message that said it's best to ask here before proceeding, as its easier to guide someone, than fix a mess they've made.
My problem is, I want to make sure I have the correct versions of TWRP, SuperSU and CyanogenMod for my phone model and Android version before proceeding, but I'm unsure of what I'm finding online.
Here's what I've found so far:
TWRP
xxx.dl.twrp.me/i9300/
(I'm thinking of downloading twrp-3.0.2-1-i9300.img.tar and hoping this is an up to date version that will run on my phone)
SuperSU
xxx.download.chainfire.eu/969/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip
CyanogenMod
xxx.download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=snapshot&device=i9300
xxx.download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=nightly&device=i9300
(I'm unsure which version to take from these two links, remember I'm on JellyBean 4.3)
I'll no doubt have further questions about this as I proceed but any help that can be offered at this initial phase would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.... Calhoon

Make sure your sdcard is compatible with the device and is of a high quality.
Encrypting your device is a bad idea as you will experience problems recovering the data should your phone find a reason to die.
