Hey folks,
I have someone interested in buying my phone. They're on AT&T though (I'm on Verizon). I'm rooted with a custom rom, so I told them it works on AT&T, since I know you can load GSM radios and stuff. I just want to make sure I'm not lying or stretching the truth. Is there any limitations to the GSM? Is it missing any AT&T bands that most AT&T phones come with? Is it slower or have lower call quality or anything like that? Anything I should forewarn them about?
Thanks!!!!
I am using my DNA on AT&T. Everything works just fine. I don't know what Rom you have flashed but some of us GSM guys have or had problems with mms. Sometimes the way to fix it is to install a 3rd party text program. Also, we can't get LTE since the DNA doesn't support AT&T's LTE bands but it does get 3G just fine.

I own an HTC Thunderbolt, but I am forced to switch to AT&T. I am able to buy an unlock code for my phone, will I be able to unlock it and it run on AT&T? I would like it to run 3G or better. If you have any info, please let me know. THANKS!!

short answer: no
long answer: read the other posts in the thunderbolt forums for similar questions.
Side note: there are some verizon phones that are "world phones" that have sim cards in them. The droid 2 I think some of the blackberries do. I would return and get one if you can.

different type of SIM card. Thunderbolt has one for 4g only. Verizon uses CDMA for 3g and LTE for 4g, and probably some other band for voice. ATT uses GSM for 3g and HSPA+ for 4g. So they are completely NOT compatible.
ATT will be eventually going to LTE, but they could be dicks about it and choose a different frequency of LTE than verizon to prevent people from switching networks (since there's more than one to pick from), thus making it incompatible still.
Currently, all voice is CDMA on verizon still and data is CDMA as mentioned if it's 3g and LTE if it's 4g (which is what the sim card uses as it is the next incarnation of GSM). Next year they will be transitioning to voice over LTE.
A rep at spring I was talking to was talking to new about some cool stuff, he mentioned u could use it off of an att 4g signal? can I get more info on this?
Well, I the photon does not have hspa+, or LTE, and so no. I Unless the photon has hidden hardware than I would have to say solidly no. I Unless there's a gsm unlock than you really can't use att, right now

As of right now there is no domestic GSM unlock for the radio. Sadly.
But its at least possible on our phones? I know its not on most cdma's
IF someone unlocked the GSM domestic radio block, yes, it would be possible, as our phone supports both GSM and CDMA radios, but as it's locked, and I haven't seen really any progress on it (as I'm sure it's a total pain in the ass) I don't think it'll happen to be honest.
If the qualdcom processor on the EVO is ment to support LTE which in turn uses a sim card shouldn't that make the phone a world phone I know it is suppose to have an embeded sim. But my true question is will we be able to reporgram the sim once we get root or will write have to go with more of a hardware mod if we wish to make it a world phone.

Sprint uses embedded LTE technology to my knowledge, so its not like on Verizon where there is an LTE sim card. Also, this phone is a CDMA phone, and therefore does not have a regular sim card slot (Like phones on ATT or TMo). No software modifications will change this, and I highly doubt that anyone could even attempt to make a hardware modification to make this phone a world phone. Also, and LTE sim card is not the same as a regular sim card, as they perform different actions (access to LTE and the rest of the network is seperate).
Yeah I was thinking that it does not have the slot the thing is that the processor does support gsm also I was kinda hopeing it was like the rezound it is cdma phone on Verizon. It was found out that just by removing verizons LTE sim card and adding a gsm one it allowed the phone to work as a gsm phone.
the evo lte does not have the GSM and HSPA+ radios to be a world phone
When I preordered, the rep told me it was a world phone. I didn't think she was right but I didn't say anything.
Yeah i read the same post on Engadget i think. What a bummer was hopping it was since it is rocking the same processor that the at&t one (correct me if im wrong). Plus like i also stated was hopping it was like the HTC rezound on Verizon that with a experiment it ended up working. O well .... still kinda wanna take it apart and try wouldn't be xda without some experimenting or moding.
My friend has a Droid bionic which wasn't supposed to have GSM support, but it did through some hacks on rootzwiki and using a T-Mobile sim card. I think that the s4 includes a GSM radio, so its probably possible at least if the sim card can be accessed. Lte is GSM based so it is likely that GSM support is there if software is modified like it was on the bionic.

Sure, you can use it anywhere in the world that has a compatible CDMA network.
Many identify world phone with GSM radios (which the Evo 4G LTE does not have), but CDMA (which it does have) does work well for roaming in Asia.
I've roamed with my Evo 4G across Japan, Korea, and China for both voice and data. There's a full list of countries with CDMA roaming on the Sprint website. As soon as you arrive in country (if roaming works), you receive a free text with the rates and instructions on how to make international calls.
I want this phone in the worst way to replace my cracked Droid x2. however there is zero chance I will be able to leave Verizon soon. is there anyway to get this phone to work on my existing Verizon plan. If I buy a unlocked cdma version of the phone?
thanks in advance.

The i9100 is not a CMDA phone so it will never work on Verizon. Biggest problem about Verizon for me (reason why I changed to AT&T) is that verizon phones only work for verizon phones and no other phones will work on Verizon, even sprint phones. ( I have heard some people had success from sprint to verizon, although ive never seen any proof)
I thought the us cellular and sprint S 2s used cdma. from what I can find on the internet its compatible with Verizon when unlocked but they wont activate it because of the esn.

I coudnt find dif forums for GSM and cdma s2's so i posted here.

Hardware wise, it may work, (unsure) but Verizon needs to add the MEID into their database to activate the phone, which is something they will not do. So, no unlocked phones will work on Verizon unless its a phone made for Verizon.
could I swap either that or the esn on the s2 with my cracked x2 and activate it that's way. I'm already paying for the contract I just wanna activate the s2 and abandon my x2. not try and have two phones working simultaneously

US Cellular's Galaxy S2 variant is the SCH-R760, and the Sprint variant (aka the Epic 4G Touch) is the SPH-D710. Both are CDMA phones.
This is the forum for the I9100. A different phone, which is a GSM phone.
You'd be better off asking your questions in the Epic 4g Touch forum. The US Cellular variant is not quite the same, but there are many similarities, and that forum is more appropriate.
Is it safe to say that are phone will work on CDMA and GSM since we have a sim card? If it is unlocked and rooted.

it will work for cdma and gsm but not all data network frequencies are supported
I have had my Verizon one on a few different networks. I am convinced that they are all
Capable of working on any carrier. But I can say for sure that my Verizon one will work on any
Network except for the iden ones.
From what I read on here I think the easiest way is to get an at&t one. Them guys have made the
Nv hacking nice and easy over there.
VZW probably will work on the most networks, seeing as it also supports CDMA. Outside of that, the AT&T, T-Mobile, or International Note 2 variants would be best. One thing with the VZW Note 2 is that it won't necessarily work fully on all GSM networks, as some, such as T-Mobile, use band(s) not supported by the VZW model.
