[Q] galaxy s4 question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I was wondering if the verizon galaxy s4 with hyperdrive rom is able to flash a custom kernel to it. The last time i tried flashing a kernel to it i had a hard brick happen. I used safestrap to flash the rom but i didnt know if safestrap can even flash custom kernels. And i had trouble putting a custom boot animation on. I tried apps to change it but it did nothing and i even tried going to system/media and tried to change it that way with no luck. Any responses on this would be very helpful

No custom kernels with Safestrap.

Would using twrp or clockwork mod be able to flash a custom kernel?

You can not flash a custom kernel on any Verizon Galaxy S4 other than ones with the MDK bootloader.
You can not downgrade to the MDK bootloader if you're running a later one.
Please read the sticky thread in the General forum. Your questions are answered there. (They're also answered in a thread that I created in this forum.)

[Q] Need help for Rooting

Wish i posted the thread in the right place.
I have gt-i9300 and want to root it.
Here are some questions=
Q1. In which process of flashing i am modifying my bootloader? (while flashing cwm, kernal etc..)
Q2. When i flash stock ROM through Odin, do i restore the kernal, recovery and the flash counter?
Q.3 Is flashing a ROM after root is a risky thing?
Q.4 Can I flash a rom directly after rooting and flashing CWM? (without changing kernal?)
Q5. What is kernal compatibility? like some kernals are JB only. And does every ROM contains it's own kernal?
Q6. Is there a way to root and get cwm without getting the stupid yellow triangle?

hallo im also new to rooting but flashed cm10.1 yesterday with root and can share what i did.
i also got i9300 nordic version of the s3. and downloaded some files
odin 3.07
cfroot 3.64
cm10.1
gapps from 03-2013
i resettet my phone and enabled USB debugging and put the phone in download mode and startet up odin and made sure its connected and loaded cfroot.tar and flashed and the phone rebootet itself and installed the ness. apps for rooting. then i bootet up in recovery manager and went to install from sdcard and installed cm10.1 and then gapps and then did factory reset and dalvik wipe and rebootet and it bootet up CM10.1 and deleted /0 folder on the phone which was empty folder from previous touchwiz samsung rom
and yes there are risks but i did this 2 times. tw to cm10 and then back again but everything went problem free. so the risk ppl are talking about is mostly likely cuz some broke and if u mess up it breaks. so it can happen.
q1; when u flash cfroot the bootloader changed and it changes counter from 0 to 1.
q2: when u flash stock back with odin it flashes rom and bootloader/recovery but counter is the same but can be fixed easily. ( did it myself between my 2 flashes so when i flashed back to CM10 it still was on 1
q3: i think its everything thats risky. dont think root and rom flashing are more risky than others
q4: dont know what u mean exactly. i didnt mess with kernals. CM10.1 has a good one i think.
q5: dont either
q6: i dont have any yelly triagle on my cfroot+cm10.1. theres a lille read thing in the left corner like 2mm long that shows u got flashed.
hope it helps.

For kernels that support both go here or here. At the moment Siyah or Goggy Max are the people's choices I assume.
Q.3 Is flashing a ROM after root is a risky thing?
Any flashing involves risk from almost no risk to a much bigger risk for those that dont read the basics and follow instructions .
Root voids warranty .
Q5. What is kernal compatibility? like some kernals are JB only. And does every ROM contains it's own kernal?
yes and yes .
Q2. When i flash stock ROM through Odin, do i restore the kernal, recovery and the flash counter?
NO read the basic faqs and guides all stickied .
Q.4 Can I flash a rom directly after rooting and flashing CWM? (without changing kernal?)
YES
and also i need a kernal for both AOSP and Samsung roms which i can't find
IT is inside the rom .
I suggest you bother to read the faqs and guides or join the help i bricked my phone club .

1. You can flash boooader separately or when you flash stock roms. (I can be wrong but this is what I know)
2. I never done that but yes for first two, not sure about flash counter, you may still have to clear them with TA first.
3. As above answer, it's always risky to do stuff without proper knowledge and no guarantees even after proper knowledge but mostly no.
4. Yes.
5. Kernels are essential part of your phone and they are compatible with your os version only and also ur phone model. So if a kernel is for s3 4.2.2, you can't flash it over to amy other model or os version. Yes for second part.
6. No. Triangle away may remove your flashing counter but as long as you have custom anything and your rom status is modified that triangle will be there.

Will i Brick my phone?
And if every ROM has it's own kernal so every new rom will replace my old kernal??
How to keep my prev kernal?
Thanks in advance :highfive:

Siyah supports both cm and stock. Yes, you cam flash cm over stock or siyah kernel.
You have to flash your kernel again after every rom flash.

As long as the rom comes with a kernel, which is the normal base, you have to flash the kernel again. Usually you can do this direct from recovery before the full reboot.
As long as the kernel supports your rom type (see each kernel's thread for it), you should be fine as long as you follow the instructions.

bootloader no clue, I never touched it, too dangerous to mess up stuff.
for flashing googy, usually you do it in CWM or via Odin. Check out the thread and read the instructions. Syiah's thread also got a huge amount of guides in the first couple of posts and they should be valid somehow for Googy as well as it is based on Siyah.

Logic says read the instructions for the kernel you want to flash .
Its a CWM file and flashed via recovery .
You really should bother yourself to read the basic faqs and guide .

[Q] Question About Custom Rom Flashing

I am trying to Flash this custom Rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2343355
To my VZW SGS4, I can not find the MD5 file to use Odin. When I reboot into recovery its not showing the file, I've tried search youtube for help and read through a lot of the comments most say something about Safestrap? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm coming from the world of apple for the past 5 years so this is new to me. Odin has been a huge help by restoring the stock rom when I mess it up haha.
What base are you. Unless you are mdk and loki'd....you can't flash....unless you are me7 or mi1 with safestrap....read the appropriate threads...

ME7.... You need Safestrap. No custom recovery. Only 4.2 TW based ROMs. As far as Odin, I don't know why it's bad. I just know it doesn't work.

[Q] i think my phone bricked.. help me😭

i have verizon galaxy note 2 and i flash dn3 rom but i decide to restore to stock rom cause i cant use unlock feature on dn3 rom...so i used odin to flash with stock rom...and here's problem..after odin show pass with green, my phone in looping in verizon logo..so i tried to do flash again odin show fail message and phone doesnt boot.. samsubgng logo poped up and go away like flashing..
i cant even enter to recovery mode..
i could enter to download mode but odin give me fail message...
what should i do...
Try using the .pit file also in Odin with whatever stock rom? your using hopefully it's not a 4.3 stock rom or you will be locked out from anything custom...
Once you have a custom recovery and using custom roms you shouldn't us Odin or Casuals unlock & root method ever again unless you have problems with recovery bootloops or radio etc...
I didn't understand what you meant when you said dn3 rom didn't have "unlock feature"
I've never heard of dn3 rom but I will go look.

@corean0213
Use this method and r515 build shared here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066 Thanks to AdamOutler
I didn't have any luck with the newer builds working. Take your time be patient if you run into problems after trying multiple times you can always revert back with your pit and stock rom. Keep that handy for emergency.
Once you get TWRP recovery with Casual your golden.
I suggest trying Alliance Rom build 25 if you like custom everything, like myself or give OhTrent Rom if you want something very sweet and simple for your Note 2! Other people might recommend something else....
Glad we was able to help!
I've been using these forums for years and sponged my brains with info and absorbed some of it lol

If I'm not mistaken it has to have a compatible custom kernel first. I would be interested in knowing for sure too. I know little about MDK but would like to learn enough to 1. not brick it, 2. not lose MDK and the loki exploit. Is there a thread dealing just with MDK? What to do and not to do for a noob?

Anyone running a build beyond MDK has Kernel Lock and the ROMs that users can flash are using the stock kernel... There were a few instances where the kernel was lightly modified but nothing big.... I'm not 100% about the OPs question though myself since I'm in fact on MDK...
As far as what to know for MDK... The two biggest things to remember are to NEVER take an OTA while on Stock MDK Touchwiz and to NEVER use any other Odin file other than MDK... Other than those two things anything else is pretty much fair game.
You need to just root stock MDK with Motochopper then once it's rooted freeze SDM with TiBu then I suggest using Flashify to install your recovery of choice.
Once those 3 steps are done.... Make a backup of stock MDK and your into flashing !
You won't " lose" your Loki'd MDK if you do those steps before anything else whenever coming from stock via Odin.
Other than possibly flashing a bad download ROM zip or something... The only other issue I've ever ran into was flashing a kernel that didn't have the Loki patch. That will send you to the " Unauthorized Software Detected" screen at boot. Even then no worries since you can hop back into recovery and restore or try again. For situations like that someone made up the Loki Doki zip that you can flash say after flashing the Alucard Kernel. which is meant for the i9505 S4 and that will Lokify it for you.
Good practice would to be just flash either KToonsez Kernel or Alucard Kernel ( + Loki Doki with Alucard ) if you're flashing a ROM you're not to sure about.
All AOSP roms that are for " JFLTE" can detect they our bootloader requires the Loki Patch and it will take care of that during the flash automatically.
If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me a PM or ask here... Never a problem

MisterTac, thanks for the super response. Lots of people would just say, "read up on it". I've got a couple of dumb questions. Can you flash virtually any Verizon rom? I have a hard time distinguishing between roms if it doesn't say specifically that it is for MDK. Another question is if you can't flash kernels, what exactly makes the MDK so much better than being on Safestrap (especially with all the roms Gigilie has ported)? One more thing, in your opinion what are the top five or so best roms that you can run with an MDK that you can't on Safestrap. I know you aren't really supposed to ask about best roms but I wanted to see what the difference was. Do you have to flash via odin or can you just install via recovery?

You can most of the time flash any Verizon ROM whether it's for SafeStrap or MDK. Jrkruse also has a patch so that you can flash just about any i9505 Touchwiz ROM as well. And for AOSP ROMs like Cyanogen or Slim or the 100 other ROMs based off those you're good to flash any of them since most of them are Unified JFLTE builds that are for all LTE S4's on any carrier.
MDK is " better " or more flexible in that we can flash Custom Kernels. SafeStrap you cannot as of now. That gives you way more control over your phone. SafeStrap also only has a couple AOSP ROMs that somehow are working with it.... Where again... Our MDK ones can easily flash aosp ROMs without issue.
All these ROMs are going to be flashed through your custom recovery... Twrp or CWM. And I suggest using Flashify to install your custom recovery.
My top picks for stability and features that work best for me are currently SlimSaberKat, Mahdi, Liquid Smooth, C ROM and OSE. You're right there is no Best ROM... You'll have to just try them on your own but I'll edit this post with a couple links to these ROMs for you...

Well I guess technically you could although I don't see why anyone would want to other than using it for ROM slots yes.
I haven't ran into anyone on here I don't think either with a Verizon or ATT S4 that could run a true Custom Recovery and opted for SafeStrap.
In CWM I can wipe my current ROM and restore a backup I've made in like 2 minutes tops... so the space you'd potentially lose on your internal memory having multiple ROMs loaded with SafeStrap really isn't worth it when in 2 minutes you can just wipe and restore ya know? Just my opinion

Just flash in recovery like any other zip. Here is Philz Touch CWM .
https://www.dropbox.com/s/odxykfc1dch3d7a/philz_touch_6.48.4-jflte.zip
Flash that then reboot to recovery from within your current TWRP and you'll have your CWM.
If you want just regular CWM you could use Flashify from the play store. Philz is the same thing but has few more options and in my opinion why not have more right?

[Q] ROM recovery / SS install - verizon I545vrufng6

Hello all,
I've rooted several phones in the past, but have been having more trouble with my verizon galaxy s4 than I have with the rest. Not so much with the processes themselves, those were easy, but with feeling comfortable with the guides I am using since there are so many different builds and versions.
I had stock NG6, I felt comfortable and succeeded in rooting using the kernel flash and downgrade method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/how-to-root-i545vrufng6-t2905848).
Now I'm looking to get a ROM backup of my current config (reflashed to NG6) or a stock ROM i can flash. I downloaded the ROM Manager CWM offers in the playstore, but when I ran it after install it requires a custom recovery, as per usual. I say "OK" and I end up with the following:
SAMSUNG
Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon)
jfltevzw
UNSUPPORTED DEVICE
Device not Listed Above
Click here if your device is not shown in the list above.
I was a little worried about the jfltevzw under the first option, since I was unable to find anything in the various information my phone tells me (build, kernel, etc) that matches that string.
Normally I never post unless I truly can't find anything... but I've spent about 2 hours looking through stickies and instructions here and on other sites for creating a recovery and installing SS/CyanogenMod, and I haven't had any luck. I've rooted quite a few devices and I use this forum as my go-to, so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction?
dev info:
Carrier: verizon
model: I545
droid ver: 4.4.2
kernel: 3.4.0
baseband: I545VRUFNG6
status: rooted (from NG6 via flash to NC5 -> root w/ towelroot -> flash NG6)
any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
As of right now you can't install AOSP roms
Safestrap is the Only recovery you can use. No CWM, TWRP Or cyanogen or any other AOSP Roms. Look for the threads about safestrap with your ng6 . And Roms that work with safestrap. Hyper drive is a good one, along with several others.
Oh. And extremely limited for kernels.

OK. Will do, thanks!
Do you think it might be good to flash NC5 and stay there even though my phone was stock NG6? Not like I'm really concerned with the new stock features.
edit: the only thing bothering me so far rooting with the method i used is I haven't had any random reboots... some people were reporting upwards of 30/day and I haven't had a problem in ~4 hours. Seems inconsistent ><
I've been trying to install SS via flashing the NC5 first then installing, but I'm having a lot of crash/reboots attempting to get anything going on my phone.
there a version of SS that can be installed on NG6?
No different kernel, it won't install

You will need to Odin back to NC5 using the full wipe .tar then use the rooting method at the bottom of this OP in order for the safestrap app to work correctly: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/how-to-root-i545vrufng6-t2905848
