Q HSPDA plus crap speed

IM now getting h+ in manchester, I thought this was suppose to improve speed , I'm getting same speeds as on h ... ANY idea why, I'm on 3UK on a UN branded handset

Anyone ? What speed should I get on h+ ?

I got 750kb/s download on 3 bar H+. I'm gonna test on the area I got most with my iPhone 4. Most I got on 3G was 500kb/s 5 bars.
IM glad in not only one thanks according to internet should be 21mb download I dont even get that on my broadband

There is actually not much of a difference in speed, not most of the time at least.. Don't let the + in HSPA+ fool you. I too don't see any difference in speed between + and no + and i'm from Singapore.

the H+ doesnt have to indicate a higher speed, higher speeds are possible with that yes, however it just shows that the network in that area has been upgraded.. speeds are much more dependent on how many many users are currently using that cell tower etc, and for sure you're ISP capped the speeds well well under the advertised 21Mbps that is "possible" on the technology...
Well I have experience with both H+ and H and I can say that with my operator H is much much faster and I usually get H+ outside of the city in villages etc...
I live in the capital city of my country so I am pretty sure they would use + in the city if it was faster instead of the countryside.
With H I usually get from 10 to 14mbps
With H+ 300-900 kbps max
But, of course I'm not an expert, so it may be just my ISP being crazy, or testing h+ on small scale, but why would it be slower ? questions questions questions !
thanks i got all excited when i saw the plus today

I think there are two parts to the answer:-
1) Your phone's setup. There are various posts/threads here about possible "tweaks" such as disabling fast dormancy, editing system files etc.
2) Your service provider's upload/download data rate capping. Personally I find it scandalous that most providers have a hidden data rate cap on their users. They are upfront about the total data limits, but tend to hide the hidden rate cap somewhere behind their "Acceptable Use" policies.
Therefore even if you tweak your settings, you may well be further limited by your provider. I suggest you search this forum and the www for information on this practice and how you might be able to have data rate caps lifted or altered.
You get the speed you pay for. Okay, they always advertise A MAXIMUM SPEED OF XXMBPS!!!!! OMG OMG!!!111! but of course you'll almost never reach the maximum. Only in a perfect condition.

AT&T Limiting Network Speeds on Titan

Can anyone atest to this? There's a thread on a another forum about this. People are saying that the Focus S has twice the speed on the network (non-Wi-Fi) than the Titan.
http://forums.wpcentral.com/titan/184114.htm
Check your speed here:
http://mobilespeedtest.net
I noticed this inthe ATT store, when I was checking out the Titan and Focus S.They were side by side, every page loaded much faster on the Focus S. I even asked if there was a way to change the settings on the Titan because I had a feeling ATT would do this. They did it for the Focus. I was lose connection all the time until I turn my speed up.
I was checking reviews and specs, and the speeds of the Focus S are faster than on the Titan. Whether this is from AT&T dicking around, or from the radios inside the hardware, or some other factor, idk. I have yet to have an issue with it though, and the speed difference is not that noticeable in my opinion.
Has anyone actually tried to contact AT&T or HTC regarding this? The Titan has
850/900/2100 MHz bands while the Focus S has 850/1900/2100 if that matters.
Contacted At&t about data speeds, both cellular and wi-fi.
The I got pushed through to a senior engineer who took my information and reset the provisions on my phone. Speeds increased quite a bit, between 3g and 4g speeds. Big difference from the sub 3g speeds I was getting. Also websites aren't timing out like before.
Wi-fi still hasn't improved for still around 14-17Mb downloads compared to 22-24Mb download speeds on my Iphone.
The engineers final resolution was to keep an eye on my 30 day return policy and recommended I go with a real LTE device.
What did he do to provision your settings?
The AT&T Titan is also 850/1900/2100.

wifi on S2?

I just purchased a sprint samsung galaxy S2. I'm not impressed with the web browsing speed everyone talks about on all the reviews. I recently downloaded speed test app on my wife's iphone 4 and my s2. Initially, my wife's iphone 4 blew mine out of the water. Her avg. speed was 9.0mbps whereas my avg. speed was a dismal, 0.50mbps. I then realized that her iphone 4 had the wifi on, where mine was turned off. I then turned my wifi on and recorded much higher results, avg. 9.0mbps. My quesion is, should I have to have the wifi on to gain these speeds? I thought the speeds the writers were refering to on the reviews were taken while working off the networkand not utilizing wifi. This is one of my main reasons I was considering returning the S2 for the iphone 4s but now that I can reach these download speeds, I'm considering keeping it. However, I'm still confused about the wifi having to be on. Can anyone please explain? Thank you in advance

Network coverage varies so much from place to place that no-one can ever promise you anything, regardless of provider or device. You'll get a better signal outside than inside, so take that as an indication of how unreliable data signals actually are. If you regularly have access to wifi then use that as much as possible. It's obviously faster and it's not part of your monthly usage so you won't get charged extra for using it. It obviously depends on where you live and how much wifi coverage you have. I know people that are nearly always within reach of wifi, both in and out, so they have good speeds all the time. I suffer from living in an area where the coverage isn't too good. I do occasionally get full HSPA+, but it's usually a couple of bars of 3G. No phone would change that though, so I have a phone I like, regardless of crappy coverage.
It will also depend on if they were connected to 4G as well. Being that it didn't say 3G or WiFi on the reports you saw it could have been 4G, 3G, or WiFi. I personally leave my phone WiFi all the time even though it is only connected when I'm at work or home. There is no 4G in my area so that isn't even a factor for me. The speeds do vary quite a bit when out and about being that it is only on 3G and the radio in the Epic Touch isn't the strongest and at times doesn't get signal where other Sprint phones do but that is the same with everything, you gotta take the good with the bad. For me it doesn't go so slow that it is unbearable but I do wish it would be quicker at times. That is deffinetly a downfall to having Sprint is the lack of coverage.
.
Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
the speed obviously depends on the speed of your wifi connection..
Since no one else noted it, the Sprint Galaxy S2 is not this phone (i9100), but the Epic 4g Touch. Which has a separate forum.
Also, if it isn't obvious, if wifi is on, then it will use your wifi connection. If not, it will use your phone carrier's mobile data network. If sprint is only giving you 0.5mbps on their "4g" network, then that's on sprint.

[Q] 4G vs 3G reception

I don't know enough about the technology to determine if this is odd or even impossible but I have noticed that while my 4G signal is pretty good (about -70 dbm) my 3G signal in the exact same location is terrible (from -100 dbm to -120 dbm). Is there an explanation? I like to switch to 3G when phone screen will be off for a while but it isn't practical. I'm using a Sense 3 rom with older radios (1.48.00.0906w_1, 0.01.78.0906w_2) . My radios have always worked fine in the past and my rom isn't brand new either.
Shouldn't 3G and 4G signals both be good if 4G is good?
I don't think they use the same towers. Right now i have great 4g signal. But if i switch to 3g, the signal is very weak.

they deff changed something recently because mine does that too and never did that a few weeks ago.. when im in 3g its always low bars compared to other 3g verizon phones
LTE (4G) uses the 700mhz spectrum, so the lower frequencies will penetrate buildings better. AFAIK Verizon uses 800 or 1900mhz for CDMA (3G) depending on your location, so it won't penetrate buildings as well (the latter is worse obviously).
It's also possible they're coming from different sources, or your 3G antenna just sucks
I'm assuming you wanted to shut off 4G while the screen is off in order to save battery? In that case you should check out Tasker, its an expensive little app but IMO one of the most powerful for android.
It lets you make profiles and tasks (a trigger and settings to apply to your phone). Right now there isn't a way to disable 4G with Tasker but you can disable a ton of other data options. My phone is set up to turn off WIFI, sync, mobile data, and GPS when I turn it face down.
This should save you plenty of battery life, if that was your intention of course.
If you do go and buy it, it can be a bit intimidating so don't hesitate to ask me about setting up your profiles.

In-Home Signal Boosters?

Ok, so this post was origionaly asking about troubleshooting data speed issues, however I figured out what the problem was.
I guess within the past couple weeks something drastic has happened in the Barracks that I live in (Army Provided Quarters), and so my internet speed within my room has drastically dropped. I used to get perfect speeds even while in my room, but now I don't.
My question now, is given that I still get 4G and generally still get 3-4 bars of signal even while in my room, would an in-Home signal booster benefit my internet speeds at all?
I'm kind of new to this whole booster thing, i have only heard of it but never used it. I am debating on buying one (albeit slightly expensive, for me it is worth it).
BLUF: Will a signal booster such as This Wilson Model boost my data speeds to be where they are when the phone is not located in my room?
Thanks!!
Problem was solved, My data speeds are reduced to 1/14th of their normal operating speeds while in my room compared to standing outside of my room.
Post has been modified to present a different but relevant question.
That won't help 4G at all. These boosters only boost a few bands and this one is boosting the 800mhz and 1900mhz band. 4G LTE uses the 700mhz band so find one that boosts that. Don't look to hard however, I don't think they make them.

Really? Poop! Wish i knew that before i ordered it. /sigh/ lol thanks. It looks like they do make 700MHz ones, but they are slightly more expensive. Looks like i will be mounting my phone in my window for quite a while! Boo!!!!
Wilson 4g V works great must put phone in the holder however
