Can't install most 4.4 roms...help? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have tried every recovery I can find...but won't boot after installing Cm11/gummy 4.4...but nameless omni and gpe 4.4 work fine...my efs partition won't mount and I'm stuck in factory mode in all touchwiz Roms...efs file shows no files even with root privileged browser...imei is good and data/phone as well as messaging all work...any ideas or known fixes would be appreciated... Believe me I have been searching for over a week for fixes...so if you are gonna tell me to utilize search fuction or just post an unnecessary troll save yourself the time and go sit on a stick... Thank you!

Sounds like you are not on MDK

Been on mdk since day 1...if I wasn't I wouldn't be able to install any 4.4...but I think something is damaged in my build...only certain Roms will boot...used to be able to run everything under the sun until I lost imei and all that...the efs backup tool I used backed up sbl1 instead of efs which was totally useless...I'm trying to figure out how to restore all the files inside efs...or at least get back to being able to flash cm...I'm running the danvdh gpe 4.4 right now and its okay...but I miss my cm

You can install any rom on any version (MK2, etc.) It just may not work right

Done over and again...that's what fixed my imei and data...but it doesn't replace the files in efs...I am going to try the efs pro tool from the gs2 forum...it was updated recently to help on anything with Qualcomm processors... If it doesn't help I'm at a complete loss

I use TWRP and nandroid my EFS partition as part of a full backup - have you tried to restore just the EFS partition on any/all of the roms that you can run? Other than that - you got me - I always thought ODIN was the holy grail of restoration, and utilizing the right .tar, every partition would be restored.

I don't have a clean backup to restore...I used an app to back up efs but it copied sbl1 instead...no help there...if i could get a clean efs copy to restore i could edit it to have my imei and all my other info so it wouldnt be a clone...but no one is just going to fork over their efs info for fear of being cloned...samsung service says they will fix it for free but it will come back to me on 100% lockdown 4.4.2 firmware...

that totally sucks - wish I had more for ya......

Fixed!!!!...two weeks of tinkering and editing to get it done...I will definitely be doing a write up on fixing it hopefully over the weekend...hopefully it will help if this happens to anyone else

[Q] help needed, replaced build.prop and phone won't start up now (past boot)

(sorry to the other thread owner as I didn't realize I was in the i9300 forum when I posted my reply asking for similar help)
*** this is a repost from the post I made on androidcentral, with a suggestion made by dmmarck over there ***
Ok, yes it seems I made a mistake and I'm new to this, so apologies. But I tried going in and changing build.prop (specifically ro.camera.sound.forced=0 to get the camera to go quiet when the phone was set to silent) and when I rewrote the file into the system, I ended up with a phone that won't go past the 'Samsung Galaxy SIII' screen into the Sprint boot. I searched around and found that my SBF might be trashed, but at this point I'm unsure as to how to get it reloaded properly.
I am able to get into the recovery (up volume, home button, power button), and may have made a further mistake by formatting the /system. Unfortunately, I didn't make a backup using that utility until AFTER the build.prop problem, so even though I tried to recover using the recovery I made (after the problem), it is understandably not working.
Am I totally screwed or is there a way to get me back? Any help is greatly appreciated.
// dmmarck and paul627g over on androidcentral think if I can get a good samaritan to help me by posting a nandroid backup of their stock L710 setup, I should be able to recover without issues, would anyone here be able to help me?

Yes! Thank you for pointing me there, I found that a little bit ago and tried it a couple of times, unfortunately, the bootloader doesn't seem to be broken, so this didn't help me.
I really wish Samsung had the OEM ROM out!

hey now, I appreciate what it takes to get to a fix, but I am in a bit of a pickle with this being my only phone and I am new to Android, so what may be a fix is still an exciting bit of news.
I appreciate that this is not the same as an OEM ROM now (with help from here and from android central), so I'm learning. I also understand that this is a problem that I caused by not doing my basic backups as I would any other software work, so please don't misunderstand and think that I am not understanding of what the timeline realistically will be to get to a fix.

I have a solution for you. Ask someone who has a GS3 to make a nandroid, copy it to your sd card and flash it. Viola you should have everything back to normal.
*warning*
Some might deny your request because certain personal information being stored in a nandroid such as gmail accounts, contacts, passwords, ect.

Yes! Thanks! This is the route that we're moving forward on in the androidcentral forums. We're thinking a FACTORY RESET/CACHE/DALVIK WIPE usin CWM will help to remove personal info as best as possible for any kind soul who does this.
I'm pretty sure someone will help you. I would have if i had a gs3(waiting for local stores to get them). I hope everything go well for you.
Come to think of it, couldn't you just factory reset your phone and it will be stock again?

thanks! actually, I have no way to factory reset unfortunately...
By going into stock recovery mode you can factory reset it. It's the same steps to get into CWM.
And if all else fail, root your phone using the odin method by getting into download mode, you'll have CWM recovery and you can factory reset using that.

hmm, I think I'm missing something because I don't have the factory recovery now that CWM is installed (or am I incorrect here?). And I'm not sure if I can get back to the factory reset options now in the state that I'm in.
As far as the odin method, I am already rooted, I'm not sure how I can use CWM recovery to factory reset at that point..
Apologies again as I am new to android and trying to learn! I appreciate you're help!
Yes, you don't have stock recovery because you're rooted. And if you're able to get into CWM you should be able to get your phone back to normal.
In CWM there's a option to wipe data(factory reset), but wiping data to cure your problem is experimental meaning idk what might happen when/if you do.

How about unrooting ?
Using this method
http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/team-epics-un-root-from-recovery.html?m=1
then going to stock recovery.
Before doing any of this first try using the nandroid somebody might provide for you.

Have I completely lost my IMEI?

I'm stuck with the generic IMEI (004999010640000). I've tried a number of the various workarounds (GSII_Repair, manually deleting the /efs folder, flashing stock and trying both of those from stock, re-flashing CM10 and trying from CM10 again...) with no luck. I was actually missing files in my /efs folder before flashing stock, but even with the full /efs folder I can't find my actual IMEI. So am I screwed?

Honestly? Probably stupidity. I didn't even realize it was an issue until I noticed apps were confusing me for other users (apparently some apps identify you by IMEI). I may just see about getting a warranty replacement. It's been acting a little flaky lately anyway (a couple apps have randomly completely lost their settings). The tinkerer in me (the one that probably got me in this mess in the first place, although I'm not sure when it happened) wants to try and fix it anyway.

I guess my question is what should I be doing related to the IMEI? I've flashed to stock with Heimdall, but I don't have a backup of my original EFS partition that I could flash on there or anything. I thought maybe you were saying ODIN had some way to poke at something Heimdall didn't.

Yep (I'm sure I don't have one). My /sdcard space was wiped on more than one occasion, back when CWM 6 decided to wipe it for me when it first started showing up in the nightlies. I ran a backup, and *poof*, there goes my /sdcard files. I tried recovering the files from the space, and was successful in recovering most of the pictures, but any large binary files (videos, archives, etc.) were corrupt. That said, I don't think there were any efs backups on there anyway, and I was having this issue before the space was wiped, I just didn't know the IMEI was the problem.

Yeah, I tried going back to stock. I did see one (XDA?) thread somewhere that mentioned flashing over and over out of frustration magically worked for someone. Maybe I need to do that.
Does anyone here know anything about the " echo 'AT+EGMR=1,7,"your imei 1"' >/dev/pttycmd1 " command? I came across this, but it is all on international forums about international devices.
Edit: I don't see a pttycmd1 in our /dev so I'm guessing it'd just error out. Is there a similar command for the i777?

No Safestrap and No Rom

Okay guys, my phone is not booting up at all.
- I flashed hyperdrive, didn't like it and went to safestrap.
- I factory reseted, and tried to restore my old backup of the stock rom.
- I rebooted the phone, now it won't boot up anymore.
Was the backup corrupted? Now I only have stock recovery since safestrap didn't stick, and no rom, so I can't do anything.
Any way to install safestrap using adb or some sort? Please help me out, I'm in need of a phone

there is a reason why hashcode set up safestrap to keep stock rom safe and why he offers no support to those who wish (at their peril) to flash a custom rom over the stock rom.
I have my rom stock rom intact and have 2 rom slots loaded each with there own custom rom and with a 32gb extsd card, have no issues with memory space.

[Q] I think I have two recoveries running parallel

So I had originally had TWRP/Hyperdrive on my phone, and switched to CWM/Cyanogenmod. I noticed now that I seem to have two different recoveries on my phone, because if I hold up+home+power I can go to a different version of CWM Recovery than if I use the Rom Manager app to boot into recovery. How would I rectify this? Would it involve wiping the /boot partition? I don't know where/how recoveries are stored so I don't understand how I can have two.
Doing a fresh install of a ROM has not resolved this by the way. And actually currently, I can't hold the buttons and boot into recovery at all, it gets stuck on the Samsung logo. I can only get into recovery via Rom Manager or Reboot options if I'm in android.

That's what I would have figured would fix it, because I'm pretty sure that's supposed to wipe /boot, but I found out I cannot flash kernels on my phone for some reason and when having to fix softbricks while experimenting with why it doesn't work and flashing different kernels, I had to do that whole process so many times I can go from softbrick back to where I'm at now in about 20 minutes.

It sure is there and has files in it.
What is that folder? Should I delete the contents?

Definitely don't delete your efs folder. Actually it's good practice to back it up

No!!!!...you will lose your number and all data capability...just wanted to make sure everything was still mounting properly... I'm at a loss as to what else could be causing your issues

I have no idea what you mean, and I'm not using anything touchwiz based anymore.

I'd find someone like Philz or a TWRP compiler to ask if u haven't already gone that route. I'm sure one of them will know. Hopefully [emoji41]

Something just occured to me. When flashing back to stock with odin I always use the nowipe image because it's all I can find. I think that technically means boot was never wiped. Would that explain my phenomena? Also where to find stock that will wipe?

So I flashed that one via Odin, followed the guide to root and everything step by step, and now that I'm back on stock kernel and want to install CWM Recovery, I downloaded Rom Manager and hit install recovery and it says everything worked but if I boot into recovery it's just the android stock recovery.
EDIT: Another thing I thought of. Could the fact that at one point I used this method to install CWM recovery on my phone have caused there to be two different recoveries running parallel?

UPDATE: Using this method I installed the latest version of CWM Recovery Touch but Rom Manager still thinks the normal version is installed, though now if I hit reboot to recovery from the app it actually takes me to the touch instead of a separate one. Is the app dumb or do I still have an issue? Also I cannot install kernels without tripping the count and having my phone tell me I need to go to a verizon store.

ROM manager may actually be the issue.
And as far as installing kennels I've never had an issue myself. The last link you posted is about flashing the md2 kernel in order to root the phone. Do you mean that?? Or installing say a KToonsez kernel after you're already rooted and have your custom recovery?

As in installing a KT kernel after rooting and having a custom recovery and ROM on my phone. Right now I have three 3/22 nightly cyanogen up and running but as soon as I install kt it trips the Verizon security and on have to flash back to stock kernel to use my phone. Booting into Odin and canceling out to restart does not let me get past the yellow triangle

On tw Roms I can't use phone at all only aosp

I've done something that I haven't been able to remedy yet and it had made it so no matter what touchwiz ROM I use the phone app won't even open and getting a call reboots or locks up the phone. I have successfully installed AICP and all is working. Any ideas what I've done? Boot loader is mdk.

I'm just guessing here but did you anything that would've touched your efs folder? If you've made an efs backup (or a full backup, they usually include efs by default) I would suggest restoring it

When this first happened I restored a backup I had from Hyperdrive Rls 15 (tw rom) and everything was there however the phone didn't work. I just ran through a tutorial of backing up and restoring my efs folder using terminal emulator and the results i got were the same on the video so I believe that to be in order.
I did flash one file which could possibly have caused this but if so I'm not sure how to reverse it. It was an NC2 WIFI fix after trying to install gdux v2.0

So personally when there's a problem I can't fix, I use odin to start my phone over. If I were you I would flash the full wipe tar that matches my boot loader. It's up to you though. That's a totally fresh stock start so you have redo root and everything.
I would also suggest PMing surge1223 and jkruse if you really can't lose the data on your phone and don't wanna go through Odin. Keep in mind they're both very busy.

Thank you for the advice I will probably end up using Odin as this seems to be a unique situation
