How to backup/restore contacts? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

When I exports my google contacts in vCard file and import them into the phone, I get an error message saying "fail to import vCard". Is this a longtime problem with Android Contacts because I found quite a few of posts way back in version 2.x?
The 2nd question I have is what the "backup" feature inside of "Contacts" app does. There is no restore, I don't know where it backup to. What is the difference between Contacts's backup and export?
Thanks.

so you aren't using your google account to back up your phone at all? I gotta say I have never had to do any type of restore of contacts as google does it for me.

Thank you for bringing it up. I know I could have used "google" to sync the contacts. But I want to de-google. Eventually I want to move everything into ownCloud, that's why I want to run a test drive first.

export to csv and then import to google...
sorry to tell you that, but that was the way i found is the only way to go. there is an app in the market (forgot the name), which made me wipe in the end, as it made my hero crash constantly. afaik this is a general problem with that app and the hero. forgot the name of the app, sorry.

use autostarts or startup auditor from market, both paid. i use startups, works great, not only for boot but also for other triggers which could start apps.

good luck, but keep in mind you have to do the csv thinggy only once, so before you search 4 hours for a solution bite the apple and take that 20 minutes to do the csv procedure...
1) The app kendong2 is referring to is called 'Export Contacts' and I've got it working fine on MCR3.0 with no crashes etc.
The process for me was pretty simple. Exported csv of contacts, opened it in notepad on PC to check it, closed it without saving and uploaded it to Google. Google even helped to 'consolidate' entries where I already had a gmail address for someone, and offered to put the gmail address alongside the phone contact details.
Try this. As kendon says, it only needs done once. Then you can uninstall the app. You also get the benefit that even if you wipe or lose the phone, just put your gmail details in on install and all your contacts appear again by 'magic'
Sorry, can't help with calendar issue. Does Hero support shared calendars?
Any other questions, just ask
HTH
sorry is wasn't clear on that, what i meant:
there is an app that converts the phone contacts to google contacts, which didn't work for me. and from what i read it has a general problem with the hero...
idk about an app to export to csv (i did it with outlook), but that should work fine, as it does only READ the phonebook on the hero, which shouldn't have much potential for crashes

[Q] Problem with contacts backup restore in 2.1

Before upgrading to 2.1, I used the backup and restore app to backup all contacts.
After upgrading, I chose restore. The process ran smoothly from the beginning, but stayed for a long while at 93%, and then reported "Finished". Checked my phonebook - no contacts.
I have been doing regular backups, so I tried using an older backup file. Same problem - the app does not pass 93%. No contacts.
Does anyone have the same problem? Know how to solve it?
I also have backups as vcard and SE sync, but those do not seem to backup everything.
I was about to post when I found this thread.
Before moving on to 2.1, I would like to backup my messages, contacts, etc. Could anyone of you suggest an application which *WORKED* while moving to 2.1? Which app you used and was the restore done correctly using it?
Thanks in advance.
all msges were deleted, but i got all my contacts back trough gmail, i allways sync it with that, its fast and easy, thanks to that option i recovered my contacts over 20x allready the last months
Actually my gmail has around 1000s of contacts which I dont want to move to my phone. So I would like to use a backup app. Anyone who used a backup app successfully, please suggest.
Thanks.
Testing as we speak...
* SE sync: Too unstable. Some contacts are duplicated, some contacts are not duplicated but their data entries are (2x same phone number etc). Does not treat addresses or middle names well.
* Gmail: You can create groups and sync only those groups (or one group) that you need on your phone. However, with 1.6 I was not able to sync 2-way with gmail. Updates on gmail account would not update on the phone. Also does not treat first name/surname well.
* Standard backup and restore app: Well, as mentioned above... Restore of contacts does not work in my case!
* Export contacts to vcard or similar (from contacts app -> choose backup): Quickest and most accurate so far. Does not maintain links to facebook, twitter, possibly not contact images. But otherwise the most reliable service in my case.

Never had this problem with 1.6, I used to make updates to my contacts and calendar items on my gmail account and it would instantly update on my phone and vice versa.

Same here. Always worked a treat for me.
The only issue I have is when I create a contact on my phone, it doesn't create it into one of my sync'd groups which then gets removed. I have to then go into gmail to assign it to a group which will then sync back.
Still, Gmail is by far the best thing to use to sort contacts!
Still it wont save my messages. Therefore I want to know if anyone tried a backup app.
Lots of people have had problems with Gmail contact sync working only one way. Could have something to do with combining with SE sync.
Gmail contact sync seems to work perfectly on 2.1 (after 3 hours...)
The-Lord: The built-in backup and restore app had no problems with restoring 7 months of text messages. If you want to be sure you don't loose contents, you could back up your texts to Gmail first, using the free app SMSBackup.
If you need to backup and restore your contacts use MyPhoneExplorer.
It now supports Android and runs over WiFi.

I had this same problem, restore the contacts as normal, if you have favourites check the favourites folder in phone-book or go to text messages and press new message, find or type a contact you have, press on the contact open it and save it this will refresh the phone-book list, exit the application, turn on and off phone all contacts should reappear. BAM Saved. Not easy but worked for me.

Did you do this through the stock messaging app? and when u look up the contact in messaging, u say click on it and open it, but do u mean just open it up to where its a new message? and then save the message? thanks for the help ahead of time though.

Prior to upgrading to Nordic, I used MYBACKUP PRO to backup contacts, msgs and call log etc. After completing the upgrade I did a restore and everything was restored apart from my Contacs. Hope this is of some help

Solved. Installed 2.1 again and all was fine. also solved laggy issue.
Resolved Issue! Here is HOW!
To backup your contacts before upgrading to 2.1 Nordic, you need to save them from the phonebook app to the memory card BEFORE upgrading.
I had to downgrade my phone to 1.6, run the restore, save them to memory card, then re-upgrade to 2.1 nordic and import them from memory card and it worked very will.
I had to do this 2 times for both mind and my wife's x10 phones!
The restore function does work fine in 2.1 after importing from memory card. I believe the records that are saved for the contacts are different from 1.6 to 2.1. there may be an additional field that we don't know about.
So word to Caution: SAVE TO MEMORY CARD BEFORE upgrading to 2.1.
Cellphone Carrier: Rogers Wireless
Happy X10ing
The restore of the contacts DID work. It just restored to our google account. If you try to add new contacts you'll be notice that the phonebook wil ask you where to add, your phonebook or your google account. You could change the phonebook content by clicking three man pics at the top left of your phonebook. Hope this will help.

Contacts problem after 2.1

I backed up my contacts and text messages just before I did my 2.1 update. I tried restoring the contacts and nothing shows up in my phonebook. So I tried it a few times and still nothing.
But when I go into my messages and add recipient it shows my contacts and in fact shows them a few times because I tried the restore 4 times.
So 2 questions:
1. How do I get contacts to show in phonebook (yes I removed the battery and rebooted many times)
2. How do I clear the multiple entries?

SE released an update to the backup and restore app but they failed to let anyone know that it just might be needed as after the update the default 2.1 app often fails to retrieve backups from 1.6. Lucky for me I caught the update before I moved to 2.1 generic. No big deal, but now I am unable to switch back to Rogers firmware (nothing lost really, but...)
As for the multiple entries - yeah, you get one for each synch account (google, SE, backup) and for each type (email, phone, ...) A little of a PITA but you can merge them.

How do I get my contacts that show up in the messaging app to show up in the phonebook. Without having to enter each one?
Perhaps you can do like this:
1. Make backup of your contacts in the Address book to a VCF file
2. Delete all contacts in the address book (open address book, press menu and select delete contacts (select all)
3. If you have a windows computer, import the VCF to outlook
4. Manually delete duplicates in outlook OR export to CSV (Comma separated Values) file
5. Import CSV to excel, delete duplicates and save as CSV again.
6. Import CSV to Outlook again OR just copy the CSV file to your phones memory card and the import it from Address Book again.
You can do more or less the same on Mac too.
Helpful ?

The problem is, no contact actually show up when I press the phonebook icon.
BUT
if I go into Text Messaging and I press new message then press add recipient all my contacts show up.
How come it doesn't show up when I press the phonebook icon?
Somebody wrote the following, might be worth a try: (he did not say what the problem was)
Contacts: I had a problem restoring my contacts using Backup & Restore (the natural option you'd think) but after hours of futile attempts it turned out that you need to restore them from within the contacts (go to Contacts, Menu, Import Contacts), not Backup & Restore.
I found this in another thread, did you try it ?

I had Exactly the same problem and after a lot of fruitless searching and messing with the phone settings i ended up with the same solution as above.
Just posting to confirm the above works.
I'm gonna post the solution as a separate thread for others.
I had a similar problem so I went back to my backup and restored the contacts again. Problem is, now every contact has every number email, address, address, etc twice!
How can I fix that?

If you are sure you have the backup on your SD card (it should be under sdcard/system/PIM/PIMXXXXX.vcf where X is the number ie 00001.vcf, etc)
Go to phonebook, contacts, menu, delete contacts.
After that:
Menu, Import contacts, Memory Card, Phone contact, then choose the backup if you have more than one backup made.
That's what I did and all my backups were restored.
different take on problem
I have my phonebook contacts working totaly fine.
my problem is when I go to add contacts when making a sms message the contacts there are not only what is in my phonebook but MANY WEBSITES (craigslist, email contacts and the like). I cannot seem to find an option for doing multiple deletion's.
cleaned sd card (as in deleted crap folders) - looked for file or folder where this information would be stored - no luck

How do you back up Contacts?

Im rather confused by how to go about backing up my contacts. Ever since google started backing up contacts, I haven’t quite understood which contacts (sim, phone or both???) it backs up. Is there any good application which backs up all of your contacts, that is , those saved in your sim, phone and google account, altogether.
I flashed bionix V 1.3.1 last night and used ‘MyBackup Root’ & ‘Titanium backup’
to restore my contacts. First I restored user applications with data and all of my contacts were back. Then I used ‘My Backup Root’ to restore contacts. (I don’t know why I took this step). It started erasing all of my contacts before restoring. When it got done, I realized I was missing my contacts saved in sim card.
This is all sooo confusing that I don’t know how to get my sim contacts back.
why did u use the other software once u had used titanium backup?
kies does it aswell ??

Hi, I used My Backup to backup my contact before & restore it after I change to other ROM.
However, it seems the My Backup will erase all your contacts in your SIM card as well after you restore. The WORST part is it restored the contact & store as Google contact. You can't export the contact to SIM card anymore then.
Luckily I have backup in my old phone & imported back into the SIM card & reload it again.
My advise, try Go Contacts app. This app do the tricks where export your phone contact into SD Card & imported back flawlessly.
Why not just have all your contacts inside of Google? And each time you addd a contact, make sure it's being added to your google account. I've been on Android since the G1... never 'backed up' a contact.. Just logged in to my google account on the phone and had them there.
or you can simply read the noob guide in this forum and follow the steps that are proven to be used by alot of people....
I stoted all contacts in Google account, everytime upgrading to new rom, synchronize contact again, all of them will be availabe in your mobile. It's my simple solution.

I dont know of a way to get your contacts saved to your google account AFTER you have already chosen to save them to phone or SIM. I'm pretty sure you only get that option once. I would think you'd have to go thru each individual contact(omg, that sux) maybe erase and then resave and choose ur google account as the location to store. As stated before saving to ur google account is the best option to backup contacts

This is exactly what happened... I couldnt have explained it better myself. My Backup erased all of the contacts (both on sim and phone) before restoring and restored contacts to google. It is important to note that it did not restore contacts that were saved on sim to google. However, when I go into 'My Backup' app and view the data i have backed up. I can see all the contacts (both sim and phone contacts) in there. I will never use 'MyBackup' to backup my contacts.
The reason I dont save all of my contacts to google is I, for odd reasons, sometimes have to use (though rarely) my old school phone. I just insert my sim in it and i get all my contacts.

Well .. Vibrant already has the import/exper function. Try using it and after flashing, open the .vcf file in your external mem card and it will extract your contacts to your phone.

Transfering contacts from backup assistant to google

I'm trying to transfer my backup assistant contacts to my google contacts for my phone. Is this even possible? and if so, how does one go about doing this? I'm tired of having 3-5 numbers for each contact and would like to just have it all on google since a lot of roms are cutting out backup assistant.
You can do this:
- Go into contacts on your phone
- Hit menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card
This will create a .vcf file that you can import into your gmail contacts. (I did this step on my computer.)
There may be other, possibly easier methods, but this is how I've done it in the past.
