[Q] Google Voice MMS Support - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone heard any new info on when Google Voice will support MMS? Last November GV announced MMS support in early 2014. Well that has come and gone without a peep. Outside of Sprint and T-Mobile has anyone come up with a workaround? I'm not talking about sending pictures. I can do that with email or hangouts. My issue is receiving MMS sent to my GV number. Mainly group texts. I just want to at least know something was sent to me.

I was just reading up on this for the same reason as you: I have missed countless group texts since I ported my number to GV.
There still hasn't been a solid date from Google, or an update to "early 2014" as far as I know. I did read a speculation of May 2014 for GV integration with Hangouts, including MMS support. May 2014 is when Google is planning to switch to the new GV protocol which will block 3rd party apps from improperly accessing the GV service. However, we could see improved integration before then.

Thanks. I switched to GV when I bought my Nexus 5 because I wanted the ability to try out different prepaid carriers. So far I love the features but the missed group texts are killing me. It's becoming a deal breaker. I really don't want to port my number to Net10 but I may have to.

I ported to GV for the same reasons and I too miss the ability to receive group texts. It would be a bummer though to port away from GV now only to have Google add MMS to GV in the coming weeks or months, or better yet, to fully integrate GV and MMS/group texting into Hangouts.

[Q] Google Voice on Magenta

Hey, I'm switching from Sprint to T-Mobile, and I need to decide if I want t port my number to TMo or keep it as my Google Voice number, with forwarding to my new number. I know T-Mobile doesn't have the full integration Sprint does, but the big question nobody seems to have answered anywhere that Google can find is this: on T-Mobile, does Google Voice still let you choose whether to receive texts via the GV app or the stock messaging app, or are you stuck using the Voice app?

Dude, your signature is being read by a ton of folk who's third or fourth language is English. Try writing a few posts in Russian, or better yet, Mandarin, and you'll get what their up against. (Yes, that's a deliberate dangling participle.) Although I agree with your basic gist for the most part, your approach isn't going to win anyone over to respect our ever-changing, hybrid-by-nature mother tongue. Respect is the key to respect.
To answer your question, you can set it up so Google Voice texts are forwarded to your stock messaging app/service/number. I use Handcent pretty much exclusively with my Google Voice number, but it doesn't support MMS, yet. I still use my cell number for MMS, but there've been rumors in the mill for months.
T-Mobile has always lagged behind the other major US carriers in Google integration ever since the G1 wasn't the only Android phone on the market. They lag because their cheap, and they're cheap because they lag. It's OK with me, I'd rather hack my phone than pay too much for it.

[MOD][REQ]Remove 100 text/hour limit for AOxP ROMS

This seems to be a common but unaddressed issue with AOxP ROMs. Apparently ICS does a poor job of splitting messages nor does it allow more than 100 messages to be sent an hour. For messages that are split the text received is garbled (not in the order sent or unreadable). It does not matter what SMS app you use (Handcent, GoSMS, or stock) the results are the same.
To recreate the issue, send a text with 200 characters or more, to 20 or more recipients. While that message is sending, send another text (test) to one person. You will get a popup stating that a large number of texts are being sent; press cancel to stop or ok to keep sending. If the message is sent the recipient will either not get the entire message or it will not be received at all. This is for messages sent to any carrier (GSM or CDMA).
This is such a frustrating issue for me, I am willing to pay for help. If you are a developer, and are willing to help, please let me know. If the fix works it should be made available to everyone.
I did try this tweak to no avail.
Sir, I see and understand your question/request.
This may be better placed in the Gen section?

Thanks I'm cool with that. Just don't want it to get lost in the shuffle, or not receive the attention it deserves.
That's a fk ton of texts. I'm curious why you would want to send so many texts on a regular basis? Not flaming, just genuinely curious.

I lead a men's ministry and the best way to communicate with them in realtime is via text.
How realtime is Google +, making a circle for just your group, but then all would have to have Google accounts....?
A Fan page via Facebook...?
Twitter page wth just your group?
Palringo: desktop and app...I use it.. Palringo...you can make room/chats for just your group...Palringo is a server-based instant messaging client for various platforms. It supported several protocols such as AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, XMPP/Jabber, Google Talk, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, MobileMe/iChat and Facebook IM.[1] As of May 11, 2012, Palringo stopped supporting third party IM protocols to focus on their own group messaging system
Idk...just ideas... Just an idea till your request is looked at?

Great ideas! Unfortunately many of the guys are not tech savvy and even less do social sites. Most of them have regular, non-smart phones. All of them have text plans so this is the agreed up method of communication. Trust me, I'd rather do something like Facebook. I have 6 phone lines for my family (four children). All the children text. We do so little calling that we have the smallest/lowest voice plan AT&T offers. I just can't believe AOSP has built in limitations for texting in 2012.

so.....
a non-AOSP rom is not an option for you?
some do work great ya know....
How about using google voice for texting. I use it along with the stock messaging. Doesn't seem to split texts. No mms support as of yet, but texting works great. Just need to get a google voice number. You can use that number strictly for your ministry. Can even receive calls on it on multiple lines. Works very well. You can also send and receive texts from your PC.

That's actually a great idea. I will give that a try. I still want the functionality in the ROM if possible.

[Request] Google Voice text support

I use GV since I switched to Verizon and I'd rather keep my old phone number. I also use it to text and thus don't have to pay for a texting plan.
The official GV app has very little support for sms. Texts only show up in the GV app and they are not threaded. Using voice command doesn't send the txt via GV but uses the carrier (found out the hard way since I got charged for them). I would like to have txts integrated so they appear in any sms app, like the default one, GoSms etc, since its a shared database just like calls.
I found an app called 'GV sms integration' in the play store but it doesn't support custom rom's and has mixed reviews, plus it wants my google password which is not going to happen.
I tried writing my own but didn't get very far, since apparently the Android system provider for texts is not fully supported. I'm wondering if the devs here have something similar.

[Q] How well is Google Voice integrated

I have fully adopted my GVoice number and it is what I give out now. The two main issues are:
Dropping MMS without notification
Some OS or App text integration doesn't work
I love the widgets available to the Samsung Galaxy line of phones but does anyone have experience using them with Google Voice?

I dunno if I can fully answer this, but I'll try.
Using LightFlow, I receive LED light notifications as well as text notifications for any SMS, and emails for MMS - however, I get the "normal" email message notification for MMS, not something that specifically tells me it's an MMS. The widgets aren't super-helpful with MMS, but again, i don't really get/use the GV number for them.
I haven't had any issues with App integration, but I only have texted/used it from the mail app and Chrome, so I dunno if that will answer that question. I don't think I've immersed myself as much as you have, but when I use GV, it has worked great.
This was on my S3 - I had a Tmobile GN2 for a week and it worked just as well. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Thanks for the reply. I guess I wasn't expecting any better integration with GV in this device than other android device.

really?
there has got to be a way to integrate this better. i mean..this is android, and a google app..come on! lol.
Voice has become another red headed stepchild lately, it seems. Been waiting on them to do something about the MMS thing for years. Not a big deal to not get them, but it should at least tell you that you're not getting something someone is attempting! App integration has been bugging me more too. They really need to get on with polishing up the app, or at least open up the api's to let others do what they want to it.

Google released a new "Messenger" app.

Google released a new messenger app, if anyone wants to try it out.
It supports Group MMS.

but does it work w/ wifi calling for group mms?
I hope it works with Wi-Fi calling, but I highly doubt it. I guess I am going to stick with the stock app, I just wished it the stock one was more full featured on the Android Wear similar to hangouts.
It doesn't work with WiFi calling on T-Mobile. No third party apps do as this is a carrier policy. It looks good, but for some reason I was getting double texts from group MMS messages.
Yea I can confirm that as well, unfortunate.
If TMO had full Google Voice integration like Sprint it would be nice that way not only MMS, but you can makw calls and send SMS/MMS from your computer as well. I really miss that.
I'd love to be able to send texts from within hangouts on the PC.
I know there are other apps available, but they're annoying, and most cost money for the 'good' features...

As a former Sprint user this is a big let down, I barely had my phone next to me, all SMS/MMS & calls were via my laptop (using my phone number). Then again Sprint's coverage was so bad lol.
unfortunately
Thank you for the post, I installed it on my Z3 all works fine but I just get my received messages not my sent messages, where it should be my received and sent messages.
Please help if there's a way, see screenshots attached
I get both, did you set it as default messaging app?
Third party applications do not work with T-Mobile's WiFi calling protocol. It's a bit ridiculous at this point, but I had to just return my Z3 before the 14-day period ended. They saw that the stock messaging app didn't support group MMS, and that I also reached out to the developers @ Sony.
They let me return the phone without paying the restocking fee. What a shame. Hopefully Sony comes out with a fix for their stock messaging application...or maybe one day T-Mobile will allow access to the WiFi Calling protocol for third party apps.
