I made a USB dongle that plugs into the USB port on the touchpad and provides a powered female USB-A port. It is basically a portable USB charger/battery with an OTG cable soldered to the USB port. Attached is a quick pdf showing the process. It's much smaller and more portable than using a y-cable and powered hub or battery pack.
The charger is $13 on Amazon with free prime shipping and OTG cables around $2 on ebay.
It's nice because it's small and I can secure it to the my case with a rubber band, providing a quick connection to a keyboard/mouse or usb flash drive. The particular charger charges via any powered USB port with a provided cable.

Unfortunately, I don't have the power specs on the battery pack. If I come across a USB-powered hard drive, I'll test it.

This hub has 4 ports, a battery plus solar charging. That said, if I buy it I'll probably just plug it directly into the OTG cable rather than solder them together. Then again my soldering can be a little rough.

Deserves sticky, love mods like this even if not always practical.
Cant believe they didnt give the touchpad a powered usb host. I guess they figured people would have issues with not enough power or drain the battery too quick with it.
So I think when I have some spare time I may mod your mod and show how to make a powered usb host that plugs into the wall charger so when your "docking" somewhere to charge you can hook up a keyboard and use it without restriction and even be charging the touchpad at the same time.
Probably don't even need to be too creative a proper Y cable may do the trick out the gate. Just to track one down.
Probably a stupid question, but it wouldn't be my first one...
Could you simply use a USB male-to-male cable to go between the battery pack and the OTG cable? Eliminate the soldering that way?
Or am I missing something?

You can do it much cheaper with adapters and a regular y adapter though, and you may want to do so, so that you can have a longer cable from the charger to the y split, but yeah I will try this out sometime soon and let you know how it works.
The charger probably gives enough power to easily run things like a external HDD and such while the battery pack may not.
@Vicious ... couldn't that possibly put too much power to a USB device? Just saying since it is probably meant to be hooked up to a regular USB 5v port and (I don't know the specifics but) the touchpad USB power adapter has a high AMP output (might be talking sht here).
Nothing to worry about a device only "pulls" the amperage it needs so you can have extra with no harm to the device. It is the voltage that needs to match and usb is standard 5v.
Having too little amperage can actually cause a device harm due to malfunction, like a head crashing on a 2.5" hdd during use or a thumb drive failing to flash properly corrupting a sector.
I feel anybody that uses the touchpad in a docked setting that wants to use a keyboard may very well make use of my idea, that I of course got from the OP's idea.
I'll part it out for the cheapest way to make it without any cutting/soldering and test it soon enough.

That cable will work fine. I wasn't doing anything special, only eliminating the y-cable. I mainly wanted a small form factor way of adding a USB port to my case for portability. Now I can put a movie on a usb drive and watch it on the go.
You generally don't have to worry about using a supply that is to powerful. As long as the voltage output is 5 V, the device will only draw a certain current and consume the corresponding amount of power. The rating on a constant voltage supply is simply the maximum current it can provide, the amount it provides depends on the properties of the device.
Say you have a device, it states it operates at 5 V and draws 100 mA of current. That means the impedance of the device is R = V / I = 50 ohms. So if you use a 5 V supply rated to at least 100 mA, the device will only draw 100 mA. The supply can be rated for 100 mA or 1000 amps, it does not matter. (Although you wouldn't want to use 1000 A source as if something breaks or shorts it can draw a higher current)
Wikipedia "ohms law" if you are not familiar.
I tried to do this but can't get it to work, the touchpad shows the charging battery icon only it's not charging, and running dmesg it say source=charger mA=100 and usb otg exited low power mode and then right after says it entered low power mode... Not sure what the issue is...
edit: I'm thinking it may be my soldering work, gonna give it another pass...

You may have the two data pins shorted together. To the best of my knowledge, this tells the touchpad to go into charging mode. The touchpad charger does this, because in order to charge, it must draw more power than USB ports are designed to provide.
You need to remove the two resistors circled in the PDF. These keep the data pins shorted together as well.

If you just cut out the resistors in the battery hub, could you just use the TP's regular cable to plug into one of the ports on the hub?

You can use whatever source of USB power you want including a wall charger, but I bought the 2AA battery powered supply above and can confirm it works.
Compatibility List:
-Multiple USB devices will work if you use a USB hub. A non-powered one works fine for me since you will already have a separate power source.
-USB keyboards and mice work fine including all basic functions like scroll wheel on the mouse, num and caps lock on the keyboard.
-FAT32 formatted flash drives will mount by default under "/mnt/usbdisk".

-If you want to mount NTFS drives or multiple flash drives, download Drive Mount. This software will mount drives under "/mnt/sda1", "/mnt/sdb1", etc. I can confirm it works for multiple drives and NTFS/FAT32. It was removed from Google Play so the apk has been posted. If anybody has had success with other NTFS mounting software please post your results.

-I tried a Rosewill USB SATA/IDE externally powered hard drive reader and was able to mount a 400GB SATA 3.5" HDD using Drive Mount. Just to see what would happen I tried a SATA DVD drive but Android doesn't recognize it and probably doesn't even support the CD/DVD file system.

-USB card readers will work, but I've had mixed results.
USB Device Info:
If you want to diagnose items and see some info about what the Touchpad is detecting, download USB Device Info free from Google Play. Everything shows up under the Linux tab. This shows some useful info about devices including current draw, device identification, etc. I tested it with a USB hub and a few flash drives and it successfully showed entries for the hub and the flash drives. It wont tell you if Android has drivers for the device, but merely IDs the device(s) confirming the connection if working.

A plugged in USB OTG adapter will show up as "Qualcomm On-Chip EHCI Host Controller" under the Linux tab regardless of whether or not power is present. This is a good way to see if you have a working OTG adapter.
Flash Drive Unmounting Issues:
Flash drives are called an SD Card when mounted. There is no option to unmount a flash drive unless you use Drive Mount, so if you notice SD card removal error messages they are referring to your flash drive and not the Touchpad's internal memory partition that is mounted as /sdcard.
When a flash drive is removed or powered off without being unmounted, its common to get a "android.process.media" force close, just tap OK.
Charging:
You will not be able to charge via micro USB while using OTG even if your power source has enough current. You can charge via the Touchstone just fine. Knowing this, you can set up a really nice docking station by using the Touchstone as a stand/charger and then using the microUSB slot for peripherals like a USB keyboard and mouse connected to a hub with spare ports for flash drives, etc.

Insufficient Available Bus Power Fix:
If you get this error, I haven't yet, some users have had success using this app posted on Rootzwiki.
I didn't feel like buying anything and already had some things laying around so I modified an Adafruit MintyBoost to accept a device via usb, add power, and continue on down the line...
Really all I did was solder a usb cable onto the female USB port on the MintyBoost, drill a hole on the other side of the tin and feed it out. The card reader conveniently fits inside of the mint tin so it's a pretty compact package.
The only down side I've noticed is that it also charges the TouchPad (the batteries will die quicker) and continues to send power to the card reader after the OTG cable has been unplugged from the TouchPad.
Excuse the crappy pic. I really don't feel like taking a better one.
I could never get the OTG cable to charge the Touchpad, I always thought when the Touchpad sensed OTG (grounding on pin 4) it refused to take power. You can disconnect the +5v Vcc to the Touchpad (red wire) on your OTG cable and OTG devices will still work.

I came to the same conclusion some days ago ,touch pad can't be charged using org cable,needs a regular micro USB cable and the barrel AC charger.I did many tests but having otg devices working and really charge at the same time its not possible,it seems like charging but its not.
Today I accidentally found this http://direct.sanwa.co.jp/ItemPage/400-GADR002W that by first look it could be awesome...

If its provides its own 5v power it would likely work, but I don't really see anywhere for an external power connection and it looks too small to house a battery.

For whatever reason, when I tried that the card reader wouldn't initialize. Once I connected the +5v from the OTG it'd light right up...
After it lit up I could disconnect the +5v and it'd stop the "charging" notification on the touchpad and keep working.

Then it should work fine as the Touchpad uses a standard OTG pinout, it just doesn't provide power so if it has a way to provide power to devices than I see no reason why it wouldn't work.
quick question that i didn't see answered above :S can i use the otg cable adapter without another power source (like can touchpad power it?)? Saw it asked above but didn't see anyone saying that the power source is required :S
kind of want to plug a usb flash drive into touchpad so I can type documents when I'm on the go and switch to computer. don't want to carry another power source either :S

No, the Touchpad doesn't provide any power for OTG devices which is why you need to supply it power. The cheap USB charger I linked to in the original post will work fine for a portable power supply if you don't want to build something yourself.
And it also appears you can't just plug the other USB into the wall?

Nice and cheap and the best part it works.
USB Hub works...sort of.
I tried this with a cheap USB hub I bought. I had bought it for my laptop and made sure it had it's own power supply to keep the load off my laptop, so I thought it would be perfect for this. Nice try though.
Turns out it needs 5V from the host to activate as well as the additional external power supply. Just fired it up with my TouchPad connected via a Y-Cable and my Laptop providing the 5V to fire it up. Works like a charm.
As yet to find out if it works with my travel charger providing the 5V and no external power supply plugged in, and how many devices I can hook up. It's got 7 ports so I suppose the supply might be useful then, but do I really need to hook up that many devices? Otherwise...pointless. Back to the drawing board I go.

Too bad it seems like we won't be able to get one easily.

However, is there any way possible to charge your phone WHILE using the OTG adapter? They both use the 1 micro port on my phone, but I need to find a way to charge the phone while using the OTG adapter.....perhaps a micro USB splitter-type adapter?????
I was actually wondering about this myself, though I don't think a splitter-type cable would work. I'm wondering if the power connection is on separate pins than the data, though...if they don't share space then I'd think it would be possible in some fashion.

A similar problem is showing up regarding using the mhl port to output to hdmi. Though the original information indicated that the power cable was supposed to charge the phone it seems it does not on the first version (super DUMB).
I have read though that the newer version of the mhl port is 10 (I think) pins rather than the 5 of the original. The newer port DOES allow charging while output is in operation.
I suspect this will also allow an OTG cable that charges while in use.
I am not so sure about the mhl idea anymore. Only one port for everything is ok if it has enough pins/bandwidth to have a breakout box that would allow an external usb drive to be read while hdmi is being output to a screen and power is supplied to the phone. As it is now with only one-at-a-time it isn't very inspiring as the phones get closer to the power of laptops.
What would be really neat would be a box with wi-fi, and the output to hdmi and usb ports as well. A wireless breakout box. Then the charger could be over by the phone which is near the user.

I'm going for a long trip and unable to bring my laptop, so I need to do everything from my RAZR. I bought a USB OTG cable and a USB Y-cable thinking it would be the final solution.
The main problem with the card readers as some of the USB sticks is that they all want >100mA and RAZR reports being unable to supply that amperage. You can debug this using USB Host Controller and enabling the 'DMesg display mode'.
Simple permanent solution:
buy a cheap unpowered usb hub. Since weight and space are my main concerns I cannot travel with powered hubs.
Complicated temporary solution, requiring root:
Check the dmesg output from the above application or by doing a tail -f /var/log/dmesg in terminal and see what port is being reported as underpowered. Most of the time it will be this: "usb 3-1: rejected 1 configuration due to insufficient available usb power". Of course that's not true since the power is provided by an external brick capable of supplying at least 1 amp.
You have several ways of doing this, I'm using root explorer as an example. Go into /sys/bus/usb/devices/3-1/ , click on the bConfigurationValue file, select 'Text Editor' from the prompt, type "1" into the editor, save and exit.
You will have to do this every time you plug something in so you might make it into a script, something like "echo 1>/sys/bus/usb/devices/3-1/bConfigurationValue".
Other issues: I'm taking two cameras with me, a Canon SX230HS and a Nikon D7000. The problem with new cameras is that they have given up on the Mass Storage protocol and switched completely to PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol).
Simple solution: use an SD Card reader to transfer photos. Use USB OTG Helper to help you with mounting, it's a free one-click solution.
Complicated solution: for Canon I'm using RawDroid. For Nikon I'm using DslrDashboard.
If you can afford it, PhotoMate should also work.
Oh, this should go into the Accessory forum, or maybe not even on this forum, but I was able to ditch the camera chargers (two wall bricks + two chargers) by buying a PIXO C-USB charger. It's one of those universal LiPo chargers with spring contacts. You can plug it into a USB port or USB charger and you can charge 1 cell or 2-cell LiIon/LiPo packs or AA/AAA batteries.
I am still looking for an efficient 2xAA/AAA -> USB high current supply for complete portability, but I might just build one myself. The reason is that you will find batteries everywhere but less so publicly available power sockets.
Hmm, I think that for a cheap USB power, you could use one of those smartphone battery backup usb batteries. The problem I see with AA or AAA is that they are less efficient due the extra space they need because of the packaging of each battery, and the materials (NIMH vs Lithium)

You need a powered hub in order for the RAZR to accept it, and I think this is a kernel issue, and cannot be modified just with root (Because of the locked bootloader).

I am already on my long trip and the non powered usb hub worked perfectly. I already explained how you can 'fool' the kernel into thinking it has enough power, this is a non-issue. The thing with AA/AAA is not density but it is they are readily available in remote areas of the world where there is no power.
I already tested one AA/usb power supply I had for overload and magic smoke came out.
It worked for me. However it depends on how the hub and charger are connected. I had to connect the hub between the female plug of the otg-cable (a y-cable) and the usb stick and the charger to the male otg-cable plug. Connecting the charger directly to the hub didn't work.

Here is the guide, if it is unclear what to do, I also give to you a screenshot of the final thing/hack:
(When I am saying connect the wires, I also mean tape the wires, so if you follow step by step the guide, use tape right when you connect)
Start of HowTo
1.1. Cut the "connect-to-otg" USB cable from the hub, you are about to reconnect it so keep that in mind.
1.2. Cut the USB cable and keep the USB male with its wires, we will use ONLY the black and the red (+/-) wires and this cable is going to charge our phone and power the whole hub.
1.3. Revert the step you've done at step 1 by connecting back the wires and also connect on red and black wires the red and black of the USB male cable of step 1.2.
(Almost ready, you now have a "complicated" cable that have 3 endings 2 of them are USB 2.0 and the other one is connected to the USB Hub)
1.4. Connect the black wire to the one side of the ON/OFF switch and the red wire to the other.

You are ready, here's a example of how to make it work:
2.1. Connect USB of step 1.2. to the wall charger
2.2. Connect the other USB to the phone through OTG cable
2.3. Power ON the ON/OFF switch and turn it OFF
Glitch is done !!!
2.4. Connect a USB Device on the HUB, it should work, if not move to the next step
2.5. Repeat the step 2.3. once.
Keep in mind that your USB Hub still works without plugging it to the wall charger, but if you also want charging you are going to connect to the charger the USB obliviously, and ON-OFF that tricky switch we added.
If you know more about electricity, let us please know if this is safe for our phone, I think the only downside is the overusage of phone's battery, but let us know, is this hack dangerous for the hardware?

Here is what you are about to create, a wall charger powered HUB with a switcher that 'touches'/connects the +/-, sounds dangerous right?

True hahah, let me edit the topic, that is a must, I also used it but forgot to mention it.
(I am currently using my Nexus 6P as a computer with this mod (mouse, keyboard and "usb soundcard") and the help of a chromecast, battery is still going down even through it is charging, using a USB 2.0 port of my rooter, the metter of Ampere shows 1750mAh (1.75A) ... Searching for a way to set phone's brightness to 0, absolutely zero, to get the advantage of the amoled screen while still keeping the touchscreen).

Here is some information for electricians, using the demonstration of this guide, you can also see the first post on this topic for a screenshot.
1. My wall charger: 600mAh, 5V
2. My Nexus 6P gets about 150-200mAh charging power, according to Ampere application for Android.
3. As I can see/guess the USB devices are getting powered by both smartphone and charger, not sure through because of limited knowledge about electricity and simple circuits.
4. This trick is glitching the Android by making it using MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) while charging, so it happens to reveal that it is POSSIBLE to charge and be in host mode, I am not sure through if it is a placebo and in reality the phone is actually charging only when no key is pressed of keyboard or mouse and MTP goes to standby mode, not sure if what I just said exists in MTP.

Worth the bump,
I found a way to tweak the creation of this guide, clearly SPLITTING the charging of the phone and the powering of the usb devices!
Soon I will update the topic making it the best case scenario guide for "USB Host Mode and Charging on Nexus 6P, while casting to a Chromecast".
Also let me inform you that you are about to charge your phone with a simple/classic USB wall charger of 2.0A electricity while having it connected on a chromecast (via wifi) and a DIY self-powered USB HUB. You have a portable pc in your pocket indeed!
(The trick was to create a stand with a case fan (16V) to cool down that heat monster snapdragon 810 and let the phone charge instead of losing energy even while charging.)
More info soon, there are still cool and kinda safe things to do with your "old" device ^_^,
