[Q] How close are we to unlocking the boot loader? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am curious as to how long we should expect to wait before someone finds a way to unlock the boot loader on the SCH-i545 with 4.3 MK2 build. Is there any way to install Cyanogenmod 11 on this phone?

Did you bother to do even a little bit of reading before you posted this "question?" This thread, right on this very page, will give you the flavor of the challenges people are facing when trying to work around the bootloader, much less unlock it.
There's a point of etiquette you may not be familiar with: don't ever ask a developer how long something will take. None of the people working on cracking this code are doing so for a living, and they may - may - get beer money out of it. In the case of cracking the bootloader, the guys working on the project are trying to keep their findings close to their vests. They don't want Samsung or Verizon to slam the door on them before they can test their theories and deploy the unlock.
If we are going to get an unlock or workaround, it will happen when it happens. In the meantime, there are some very nice Safestrap ROMs out there. Give one a try.

Almost seems that way huh. Any tiny bit of searching and you'd think someone who created an XDA account would have known better. Idk maybe I'm wrong

half assed Halfcab

Halfcab was to root our phone - a simple process according to them. in 3 days they have managed to brick one of our phone and then not properly root the second. Now it is working very poorly. now they have blocked our emails and will not respond to us. According to them a simple download is needed so why are they not responding. Avoid as you probably will not get what you pay for.
Better taking the advice and know how from the xda site, rather than some dodgy phone guys...

They are ADX Developers. They never had possession of our phone. Any paid to have it rooted because we honestly don't know how to root the phone. We open to suggestions.
We just wanted a simple root but they have messed up. We were naive I guess.
correction: these guys are XDA developers.
They work under different names and email addresses so watch out.

Are you sure it's bricked? You can't get into recovery or use adb?
Personally, I wouldn't let someone I've never met remotely flash my several-hundred-dollar phone (if that's how it was done). But that's just me.

I would let the unlimited.io crew or con247 toy around with mine remotely; such has been done during the initial release of the JuopunutBear S-off method. But only because I have observed them to be legitimate developers seeking to better user experiences and knowledge for knowledge's sake. Definitely not some random XDA reader with a website storefront and access to other people's ROMs and tools.
Edit: read the post below this one. Then read it again; it pretty much sums up the situation.
I a firm believer that if you can't root your own device, you should be stock... Hell I'm even against the one click root utilizes for inexperienced users.. part of having root is the understanding that you are now tech support..the only way your going to learn is to do it the hard way. Not by plugging in and clicking root... Ever notice on any forum for a phone with a one click, there's a ton of "help I'm bricked" threads... Funny thing is you never see these before one click is available...kinda hard to become tech support if you have zero knowledge of what a Linux OS is and how to move around with terminal..
Basically I almost don't feel bad for the scam, shoulda took the time to learn what's involved with being rooted...sorry

New to rooting, is this legit?

So, I am new to rooting and kind of worried about rooting and worried about screwing up my device. I found this on google and the youtube reviews seems pretty legit. Anyone here try it before, I make the jump? Thanks a dollar. http://www.halfcab123.com/

There are lots of guides here on the forums that will walk you through the process. We were all noobies at one point in tome and there's lots to be learned from one another.
Just read everything over a few times before you try anything. And if you get stuck, just ask for help everyone here is very helpful.
Hope this helps.

Honestly it's not as horrifying as some may think. It's quite simple. Just read the guides and make sure you have everything you need at your fingertips. It would be good for you to learn since you will be flashing roms and such. It's almost like shaking hands and saying hello to your phone. (lol)
Just stay s-on until you get comfortable flashing and its virtually impossible to hard brick your phone.

Or just never S-OFF. I never did, and have been doing great with ROMs and kernels.
Also, to the OP, just do it yourself. It's a valuable lesson in not wasting money, and you learn something new.

Chad himself is even very against s-offing. Fastboot doesn't really take that long, but I do most of my flashing away from the computer. To each their own I suppose. (I'm s-off btw)

Agreed with everyone man.. Im by no means dev, or even a themer just a user but just simply reading and chatting with people on the forums being polite will get you along way.. if there's anything your wanting to learn I'm always available to simply chat to, like I said I'm no one special but I know the simple things, flashing, fastboot commands, I can even walk you thru simply rooting or going the whole nine yards with the s-off thing.. I do promis you tho in the end any thing you learn will be useful in the future.. you'll always wanna flash a new Rom, or kernel, or even a new mod for sense 4.x you like.. but, YOU will wanna be the one to do it not send it in again, or something silly like that.. my gtalk [email protected]. But my advice is always read, search and read some more.. and if you still can't find what your looking for ask a questio. Good luck bro.

I was unsuccessful with getting S-Off on my phone (about 120-ish attempts) so I just use an app called HTC dumlock. It works by copying my recovery to my boot partition and booting to that. It allows me to flash kernels as if I had S-Off. The only disadvantage is that it's an app and does require a working ROM so a borked flash means I have to fall back to fastboot.

First, for them to root your phone remotely you'd have to give them remote access to your pc. No way I'd trust these clowns with that.
Second, rooting the phone is easy, all you really need to do is get your unlock code from HTC and follow the instructions here on XDA. It's really easy and there are a lot of people here who will help if you need it. The only really tricky thing is s-off, and they can't help you with that remotely since it requires access to your phone.
Now, if you're new to rooting you probably shouldn't go s-off just yet anyway, but that's another topic altogether. Regardless, if these guys root your phone you'll be s-on. The extra steps for s-on flashing aren't difficult, but unless you want to pay them to flash every rom you try you need to learn how to do it yourself. I don't know about everyone else, but I go through phases where I'll change roms several times a week or even daily just to try stuff out.
Third, these halfcab guys are selling other people's roms. Under terms of open source that isn't illegal, but that doesn't make it right. You can download them for free and if anyone deserves money for a rom its the dev who worked on it. They'll take donations! (I think I even saw where halfcab was selling unlock codes. HTC would probably take issue with that.)
Fourth, they're selling WiFi tether. Again, it's free to download. Most ROMS come with it anyway.
So short answer to the OP is no, it isn't legit. It's a ripoff and could leave you with major headaches if you don't learn how to do this stuff yourself anyway. It certainly won't be as convenient as it may sound.

Please don't support someone who sells someone else's work as their own. There may be no law against it, but that doesn't make it right.
And no, rooting / s-offing your phone isn't easy the first time, but you can do it if you read and then ask questions like everyone else has said.
If you're that interested in rooting, you'll be glad you learned to do it yourself.

Don't pay people to do it, you'll be calling them weekly on how to fix stuff. You need to know how to look at an issue solve it and perform the steps necessary to keeping the device going smoothly. If you don't learn the terminology and what each thing does you will be lost forever. I did it for my brother and I get calls all them time How do i do this? its terrible. If your not willing to put some time into it then like they said buy an Iphone. Once you learn though its exciting and fun and its a community everyone here wants more people to learn it makes the platform great.

I worked with the poster, over the weekend, to pull a system dump:

I don't think he was ripping anyone saying he's "owed anything". Just exhibiting frustration on a locked bootloader. I too had hoped Sammy would not have gone this route, and more development would continue. Those of us on VZW should come to expect this now, as they are nazis with the bootloader. Bootloader unlock is not a selling point for me, but it does make it more fun.

It is frustrating for those of us on ME7 not to have an unlocked bootloader, but I for one am grateful for the options we DO have right now... you can still root and use Xposed to customize to your liking or use Safestrap and flash a decent amount of roms. I will keep waiting patiently for someone to find an exploit, but in the meantime just shut up and enjoy what options we're even lucky enough to have. You picked Verizon, did you really expect freedom?

Unless you have a developer edition you do not have an unlocked bootloader. If you have mk2 build you cannot install a custom recovery. Your only option for custom rom at this point is safestrap and a rom that is compatible with that. You have a lot of reading to do.

Ok I understand its annoying but most people come on here search for a few minutes and if an answer cannot be found they ask for help. No one is going to sit here and search and search and search and search. People have things to do places to be. Do you just sit here and read forums all day long???

What is your problem? These threads are here to help people! All I’m doing is asking a quick question which takes less time than me going through thousands of threads. If you don't want to help you don't have to help just keep it moving. People like you are ridiculous.

There are threads that were created by some of the regulars here (including me) which are there to try to help people avoid bricking their phones and to answer questions (like yours) that are asked on a daily basis. That's what he suggested reading. I'm not sure why you're so unwilling to help yourself understand, particularly given the consequences of ill-considered actions. After all, XDA is not a tutorial site, You're expected to read, understand, and take responsible actions based on your understanding.
Flashing a custom recovery on a post-MDK phone is a completely avoidable mistake. Some of us have spent a lot of time writing up explanations of what you can and can't do, so we'll point to those posts rather than repeat ourselves,
The tragedy of YouTube is that nobody updates - people post a video about rooting their original MDK GS4, That was OK back then, but the multiple releases since then have made those videos invalid, but they stay there, enticing people to brick their phones. XDA didn't create those videos and isn't responsible for fixing the problems caused by them.

The point is that searching and searching is not necessary because all the relevant info is in a couple of pinned threads..... People can be harsh but understand where they are coming - at least you got some useful responses - I would have just ignored (but I guess I couldn't help myself). I trolled for months and read a lot of posts before my first post. Moral of the story is, like the first response said, use safestrap.

People like you that cause so much aggravation in these forums and refuse to take any time at all. You have no problem demanding answers from all of us who take time to read and research........btw, I have set up guides and have a sticky in place to make it easy for S4 owners to understand what they can and can't do with the S4. Grow up.
I think we all need to meet at the flag pole today after school and settle this.

apparently it is some kind of beast. Knox has it locked down pretty tight from what I hear. like I said, my bulb doesn't shine that bright when it comes to a lot of this stuff. I just try to read and keep myself out of trouble here.
there have been a few guys trying to get a safetystrap thing going. they got it for the Note 3, thanks to a gentleman by the name of Hashcode. he has tried to get it going for the Mega. I am not sure whether he is still working on it or not, I know he had hit a big hurdle and took a break for a bit but it was on the agenda to give it another shot. that was maybe about a month ago or more.
another gentleman by the name of AZPATTERSON has a thread for possible safetystrap in the General section.
you seem to be a guy with the XDA stats and a big brain to possible understand some of it. you should take a look.

I am familair with safestrap and Hashcode. Never had to use safestrap to be honest. I am also familiar with knox. I dont know if it would be possible to remove knox with supersu and a system uninstaller app. I do know knox shows up as a system app. Im betting that knox in the bootloader is not the same as knox as a system app

I dont think there is a way to remove. I think the trick is to leave a small portion of existing OS, with the Knox, tricking it to thinking everything is in tact. Then there is a secondary OS, which we can then play with.
Its probably pretty obvious to you. But I get a chance to sound like I know what I am talking about.

I have removed Knox as a system app from my wifes note 3. It can be done, I just dont know if it would have any effect on the bootloader

Bummer for me......no bummer for you. Well, congrats on the new phone. I had eyeballed the Note 3, but everything is just so small now.
