So recently my GS3 start dying randomly and I haven't done any change to my device...
at the beginning I didn't know what was going on, but after a short search on the internet I found out its a classic SDS caused by the infamous "Insane Chip" which of course my device has.
I read that the solution to the SDS should come with any ROM higher than 4.1.2 which I already had on my device....
tried flushing different roms (some customized and some stock) with no help...
the device runs perfectly until its suddenly drops dead, and I also found out that the battery keeps darining as the device was turned on and when people try to reach me they get a rining tone while my devine won't actually ring or function.
I've tried on a different battery, SIM card and SD card from another GS3 that works just fine and still got the same problem while the other device which was working great kept working the same way,
so I guess I can rule out the ROM, the battery, the SIM card and the SD card.
what can I do?
thanks in advanced!
Rony.
My first guess is that it's the battery

First of all misconceptions about sds people who have problems with their phone suddenly blame it on sds.....Now true sds is exactly what it says sudden death syndrome ie: your phone switches off and never comes back on again no matter what you try...There is a partial sds which can have similar symptoms but has GIJS053 said above I think my first port of call would be a new battery.

Well it looks like your trying all the right things to find the problem which is good..maybe you should think whether it is hardware related? I know you said the device powers off but does it freeze at all or does it just power off? the reason I ask is this thread >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/ultimate-galaxy-s3-unusual-freezing-t2133401 << but to me it is sounding more hardware related what the problem is exactly I don't know but maybe somebody can help who sees your thread good luck.

The device dons't freeze at all, and actualy works super fine.
but something I seem to forget to mention it is that the device only dies several minutes after I turn off the screen.
it dosn't die after a prolonged use and few seconds after I turn off screen I still can turn it one without problmes.
the problem begins few minutes after the device screen is turned off.
Do a full wipe, format internal sd and flash the latest stock 4.3 with odin. Remove the external sd and sim, test fully before you install or restore anything. If it is still the same then you have a hardware issue, probably an IC failure on the motherboard.
SDS and half SDS relates to faults within the emmc IC, which is very different to the symptoms you describe.

what's "IC" exactly? and is it fixable or replacable??
Integrated Circuit, the chips attached to your motherboard. Not fixable, new motherboard required if so.

how much the IC + the repairment should cost??
New motherboard is around 2/3rds the cost of replacing the whole phone.

hello ,
suddenly my s2 won't read any sim card and it's always on flight mode ! i tried to restart the phone and it didn't work , also tried to take the battery and the sim card off for a while and it didn't work also , i did factory reset still nothing.
- the sim card worked normally on another phone
- the phone is running on android 2.3.5 because we didn't get the ICS in the middle east for some reason.
- the phone is not rooted.
- kies doesn't recognize the phone anymore .
so how do i make it work ?
and sorry for the bad English because I'm not a native speaker .

Then it may not be you efs folder (IMEI!) becoming corrupted after all! Try cleaning the contacts on your sim & inside your phone & make sure none of the pins are bent or broken internally also, then try somebody elses sim card in your phone first before replacing your own! If your sim works in another phone then it's got to be something to do with the contacts/pins, as you haven't flashed your phone or anything to corrupt stuff in the first place!!

Annoyed with Android
I have the exact same symptoms except I did not play around with any software updates or “internal settings”. The memory on my phone was filled with photos I took over the weekend and some apps refused to start up because of the lack of memory. Probably the mistake, I took the SD card out to try to read it from my Win 7 notebook, because the “Gallery App” did not want to open to allow me to delete of some images to free up memory. (Well why not, most other equipment allow their SD cards to be read by Windows.)
Whatever the reason the phone is completely stuffed; the SD card is not recognised and that result in no phone connection!! The phone can't be used. This is absolutely ludicrous. One cannot sell equipment that can be made unusable this easily. I can understand maybe losing image/data on the SD card if I took it out, but now the entire phone is useless, and it seems (from other forums too) that it is quite a process to get the so-called IEMI folder back. I am really frustrated at this point and have a real annoyance with Android. Judging from the amount of hits returned after a Google search, this SD card problem is a fairly common one. I am not going to fix this; will rather get a new phone, one that works, and it will not be an Android phone. Yes I know hardcore Andriod followers will be all over my post, but just think a bit, this kind of problem should not happen and is really nonsense
(PS: People that moan about multiple postings, can't you just answer the question, even if there is another similar thread, do you have to nit pick on everything.)

I am in a similar situation with a t989 phone that doesn´t recognize my simcards.
Some days ago I tried to upgrade my phone to the latest official ICS using ODIN as KIES
was always giving disconnection errors before finishing the upgrade.
Finally I got my phone stuck at the download mode with an error message and a yellow warning triangle.
I thought I had a bricked phone, but fortunately I managed to recover it using an old
official ROM. The problems is that now it doesn´t recognize any simcard inserted.
The current installed software versions are:
Android 2.3.5
Base band: T989UVKID
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Compilation number: GINGERBREAD.UVKID

Hello please i just read your post and would need your advice, my S2 just stopped recognizing my Sim card yesterday night, i was playing a fast action game on my phone and the phone suddenly went off, when it came back on it did not recognize my Sim card any longer. I tired putting the same Sim in another phone and it worked but when i returned it to mine it still did not recognize my Sim, please can you tell me what to do with regards to this issue?
Tonight was second time in about one week when my phone shut itself down at night. Because of that I slept in both times Both times it was connected to charger and battery was full, also there was a lot of updated apps (notifications in status bar). Right before first time this happened I recovered from soft brick. First after recovering phone didn't work well it use to freeze on higher load so I re-installed stock ROM one more time and everything seemed fine.
Now I wonder if it's software or hardware issues. Any ideas?
Cheers in advance.

No, I didn't UV/UC. I was on rooted stock kernel.
Made factory reset today and installed custom JB ROM today to see if it helps.
I think your problem is a software related one, try using the latest stock Rom, also it may be induced bya virus or a new program which you May have installed, if this didn't help them you should think of a hardware problem.

I was using 4.0.4 official ROM (NEE). And most of my apps are from Play store and only few from a reputable forum.
But as I said, I wiped everything today and installed a different ROM. If everything's OK for a week it will be clear that it was a software glitch.
Maybe it's tired?
****Non of this is of any importance. Just chill the f**k out and relax****
One week after installing custom ROM my SGSII has shutdown at night again. Like last times it was connected to a charger but this time there were no updated apps. So it's not ROM's fault because it happened with custom and stock ROMs.
Is it possible that soft brick damaged some part of phone's hardware (internal flash memory)? When recovering from brick I re-partitioned it.

MistahBungle said:
1) There's no such thing as a 'soft brick'. Your phone is either bricked (unfixable other than by authorised repairer/JTAG) or it ain't.
2) Highly unlikely anything firmware related would cause hardware issues like that.
It may well be a hardware issue given it's happened on different roms. If you're still on stock & haven't reset the flash counter, do that & send it in to Samsung/authorised repairer to be looked at assuming your warranty is still good. If it isn't, take it to a local mobile repair shop & have them take a look (if you've gone back to a custom rom, reset the flash counter & back to stock).

There's no warranty, therefore I won't be taking it to service center just to hear it needs new motherboard etc. because it'll cost me almost same as to buy another SGSII.
At this moment I'm only interested if there's anything I can do by myself. If not it's time for a new phone I'm afraid. The phone is still perfectly usable but I don't want to risk sleeping in and being late for work and I don't want to buy an alarm clock.

Do a completely clean install of stock (format cache, data, system, & internal sd card in CWRecovery first, Odin flash after), do not restore any apps (or app data with the exception of contacts/calendar/call logs/sms) via Ti or whatever, clean reinstall a few apps at a time, test for a day or two. Install a few more apps, test for a day or two. And so on.

Thing is that when the phone got bricked I had no backup of any kind and since internal storage was re-formated we can say that it was fully wiped. I installed stock ROM first. But phone was rebooting on higher load so I did factory reset and wiped dalwik and data. Reinstalled stock ROM again (even re-downloaded to make sure it's not corrupted). This time it wasn't rebooting. But after a couple of night shutdowns I decided to try a custom ROM. I did a full wipe (including internal storage) before installing it. Clearly it didn't help
BTW night shutdown happens about once in a week.

Simple, Because you cant run your phone just via charger, it goes from charger to device via battery so if your battery is faulty you could have lost power to device.

If you can do the above yor devcie is not bricked. There is no such thing as a "soft brick", that is just a label n00bs like to use as a label for when they cant boot to system. Liek when they get a boot loop etc.

1000% Untrue. They are full of stories from n00bs who "think" they have bricked their device, ie all the silly "soft-brick" topics.
My advice to you would be to check battery pins for bends or corrosion and also swap battery and see if you get different results.
Before any of this though you should try a kernel cleaning script, flash stock rom via ODIN and then flash Siyah kernel.
Jeez man! Why do you waste your an my time typing this long but pointless post?! To show how "l33t" you are? If so please stay away from this thread.
As for battery, if it is faulty why it's still fully charged? Also why does it act-up just once in a while? IMHO battery is quite a simple thing, either it charges or not. It looses it's capacity over time. Mine is about six months old and still lasts me about 36 hours.

Because I was trying to help you [email protected] ungrateful moron! How on earth was it trying to sound "l33t" (By the way its "1337").
Your problem is that you create a thread about a problem you have with device and then dont even listen to what you get told with regards to advice from multiple people, ie check rom/kernel/battery. What the hell do you expect any of us to do give you some magic words you can say to solve your problem?
What I wrote was correcting your misconceptions and giving you on advice on how to resolve your issue, Did you even bother to read what I wrote at bottom??
Also you're been very narrow minded if you think that the only symptoms of a faulty battery is if it cant charge or hold charge. Symptoms can also include random drops of output which result in your phone losing power and rebooting or powering off which is exactly what is happening to you. Now I'm not saying this is your exact problem but the fact that you are ignoring this possibility shows how much of a fool you are been especially when been hostile towards people who are trying to "waste their time" helping you.
If you dont want our advice then I suggest you GTFO and find another site to post your problem on.

Simply putting this, i buyed a SGSII about a month ago, and since then it shutdows or freezes. I don't know what is wrong. I TRADED THE PHONE 3 TIMES!!! And all 3 times the phone has the SAME problem. It random shutdown/freeze(I don't know the difference). Theres almost 0% chance that the Vodafone store has 3 devices with teh exact same problem, when the 3rd SGSII i got(this one) is from a different package then the others....
So I ask here really kindly, who can help me if some1 already had some problem with some application I have installed. I leave here the screenshots of Google Play apps I have installed. Apart that i only have BBS.

Hey so i bough my SGSII 3 days ago, and this is the 2nd time it happens. The phone just shuts down or something. I can't unlock it by any means.
Only thing i've putted on it was some apps and Nova launcher.
Should I take it to replace or? Is it hardware? Thanks!

I didnt modified nothing at all...unroot, still with the ICS stock it came out of the box 4.0.4
Aw and I have a flip cover that has a magnet on top but that doesn't changes nothing right?
Well, it is off course possible it's software, but if it's brandnew you shouldn't be bothered with fixing problems like these yourself I think Personally I would send it back^^

Ill take it to the store then
So I went to Vodafone and first question they made was:
Have you changed your SIM card lately?
I todl them it had ~5years or something.
They said it may be the card.
I asked if this ever hapened.
They said never...
So i asked, if it never hapened why you say its because of SIM card?
---
And that was it. They told before anything I should change SIM and test if it still shuts down...
What you guys think? Anyways I'm gonna change SIM card to 4G one, since now Vodafone is obligating every1 to change, they gonna deactivate the old ones soon... Then i'm gonna see if phone goes down...
I just seems strange the phone goes down cause of SIM card with no signal or something... Anyone knows a answer to this?
Any1 knows osomething about this?

Dude, bumping your thread every couple of hours isnt going to achieve anything other then possibly it been closed or deleted.
Firstly people will reply when/if they have something to say. Second its New Years eve, most people are busy. Only reason why I'm not is because I'm not well at the moment so resting.
A sim card wouldnt make your phone shut down, hes talking crap. Also when you say "cant unlock" do you mean network unlock? If so then use the search button, we have plenty of topics on how to unlock network very easily, most/best are a simple app you install from market.
Don't take Vodafone's crap. Demand a replacement as the one they provided is faulty from day 1.
Try without a SIM too, this will prove that is not the problem.
Take Atheists advice and don't bump within a 24hr time frame, especially today/yesterday.

Are you sure on that? Seems they don't want to simply trade the phone, and wanna keep it for tests...
Though, 2 days passed and he doesn't shuts down...
Not entirely sure as I cannot test the phone myself but for a new phone to be playing up, it's not convenient and I would want a phone that works without crashing, especially from new.

Try to take off this cover with the magnet. I think that the magnet is interfering with the hardware which then causes the phone to shut down.

Am I the only one that thinks taht is really strange 2 phones have the same problem? And that they hold like 1 day or 4 (depends on the phones mood xD) and then shutsdown? xD
I wished someone informed enough on old SIM cards could clarify me if SIM has something to do or not
But I already went to the store, but they dont have any SGSII left lol Waiting for a new packages to come..

Must be a faulty hardware, is that store reliable?
A brand new device has to run super smooth, if not, store's fault.

Look dude, you have been told OVER and OVER again that it couldn't be the sim card causing phone to reboot. Its either your hardware like your phone or battery or its your software, ie your rom or apps installed.
Have you even bothered trying other sim cards?
Tried factory reset?
Have you tried other rom?
Have you tried other kernel?
Have you got refund and gone elsewhere?
Have you read any of the replies here or in your duplicate threads?

With all due respect it seems you don't read the replies you say you bother to answer...
1- It doesn't reboots, it just shutdowns. Thats why I say my problem isn't found elsewhere therefore doesn't seems to be a ROM problem.
2- Since I have 14 days (and not the usual 30) to ready-exchange the device trying a SIM card won't be enough, since the phone can handle random time turned on without going down.
3/4 - I already changed the phone once, so same hardware flaw would be suspicioous since phones are tested and odds of getting a faulty hardware 2 times in a row with the exact swame faulty style is like 1/1000. Especially on recent SGSII.
5- Nope, i'm hoping i'll get a talk with Samsung(not vodafone) and talk to them if the third phone come with same problem.
6- Yes I did. But as I said on point 1) it seems you didn't read mines I asked for someone that has a sim card knowledge, since phones in the past DID shutdown due to low network/loss of signal causing phones to shutdown. But as I said to the Vodafone guy, i think its strange that a new phone such as most smartphones are to shutdown cause of SIM card beeing old/loosing signal with this 4G thing. But since i traded for this new SGSII and the SAME problem is hapening i tend to beleive is the SIM. Though I already asked Vodafone to send me a 4G card and if I get the third SGSII I will try to test the full 14 days I have to see if its the SIM card thats causing something or not.
Apart all of this, if any1 faced the same problem please tell me something(most likely will be from Portugal, who knows).

You haven't mentioned changing Roms or Kernels.
This to me sounds like a software issue.
This is not a Sim card issue!!!.
It might be wrong current or voltage issues, but this being a new phone would lead me straight back to it being a software issue.
I have a Galaxy S2 for over a year and had a load of random reboots or shutdowns. It always was a kernel issue, update to the latest or downgrade to the most stable always fixed it. So my advice try to fix the software before blaming the hardware. Try different kernels, Roms and if you are still having the problem then it is a hardware issue. Flash a stock Rom back on and your phone should still be under warranty. Goodluck
BTW this is hilarious: 1- It doesn't reboots, it just shutdowns. Thats why I say my problem isn't found elsewhere therefore doesn't seems to be a ROM problem.
That sounds like a Rom or Kernel problem. First thing I would check! Are you sure that it shut downs rather than just freezing?
Also I just noticed your on 4.0.4 there is problems with the version of android

He's been advised now multiple time in multiple topics to try new kernel or rom but he just keeps simple ignoring the advise or dismissing it and seems to be convinced its his sim card for some odd reason.
If he wants to create multiple topics asking for help (have them closed/deleted) and then ignore the advise and then wonder why he still has same issues then its his own fault and his own problem.
Hi, I've done some googling and searching etc, I'm not sure if this is the 'Sudden Death' thing or not..
My phone was working fine, left it on the side for about an hour and went to check for txts... nothing, the screen wouldn't come on. Pretty sure I had a reasonable amount of battery left, tried to turn it on anyway, again nothing.. tried putting it on charge.. nothing..
Anyone have any ideas what I can actually do to fix it or make it work again? =/
I watched a youtube video of someones sudden death and theirs actually came on but only to the first Samsung screen, mine doesn't do anything at all.
Really don't want to lose stuff I have on the internal memory card either.. photos and stuff (not backed up anywhere) so if theres some magical way of retrieving that too that would also be helpful?
Thanks in advanced.
Samsung service center is the last option left
Just make sure your battery is ok before you take any drastic action

i think so, too :/
had the same problem and only a verified support centre and a time of 3 weeks could help...
Thanks for the replies everyone.
I read something about plugging in the USB and holding down the volume keys without the battery in and the computer is supposed to power the phone - This didn't work so I guess it's not the battery.
Does anyone know if they do replace the 'main board' or whatever do you lose your data?
Also... my screen is cracked and has been for ages now. does this void the warranty?
Thankss
sorry to say this, but yes. cracked screen means voided warranty ,they will say the phone was damaged when the incident happened!
That's what I thought, do you know even if they do fix it whether or not you lose your data?
Yes data lost if its a motherboard .
jje
I've just decided I'm never using internal memory again..lol.
If u r lucky then u can get 32gb s3. here in my place SDS faced 16gb s3 replaced with 32gb by service center peoples.
I just checked my phone using "eMMC Brickbug Check" by "Vinagre" (available on Google Play Store) and it turns out that I have an insane chip.
Screenshot attached.
I know that Android 4.1.2 is supposed to fix this issue as it somehow prevents from phone to go into "Sudden Death" but still that doesn't change the fact that the chip in my phone is faulty. Plus people with Android 4.1.2 XXELLA still are experiencing brick bug!! There are tons of posts all over the internet to prove that. I have just 2 months of warranty left and sure my phone is working fine now, but there is no guarantee that it will continue to do so even after the warranty is over. What happens if my phone dies after it's out of warranty? I'll be screwed, right? What do you guys think I should do? Would Samsung Care acknowledge the result from an app & change my chip or offer me a replacement?
Please help me ASAP. I'll be very very grateful to you.
No, they won't fix it as there is nothing wrong - yet.

The fix for the SDS is not in the Firmware but inside the Kernel. So you could use the newest Firmware but if your Kernel is not SDS Fixed then you still can have the SDS easily. I`ve seen a lot of cases where people used a firmware that they thought is safe but if you ask them what kernel they used you often get a reply that they used some outdated kernel like Siyah 1.8.6 which has not the Samsung fix for the SD included.
I don`t know of any solid case where a Sudden Death occurred where people were using a fixed Kernel.
Also sometimes you have cases where people first experienced the Sudden Death Syndroms like a lot of freezing or sudden reboots and then they decide to come to XDA and afterwards they flash a fixed kernel in hope that this will fix the problem(s) but then it`s often already to late. If you already have the symptoms chances are good that your phone will die anyway.
However if you know a case where the user had no symptoms at all and were using a fixed Kernel then please post a link to it because such a case is of big importance.

Well, it is true that many peoples are removing their car security and safety devices.
so what? There are two alternatives:
1. They know what they are doing and what, therefore they are considering the risk;
2. They are do not know what they are doing. In this case, bricking their phone is hard, but only way to learn.
The choice is yours, boys and girls.
I thing that you can buy warranty time but I am not completely sure about that.
first, that your phone has the faulty chip, does not imply that our phone is going certainly going to die, if that was true, there would be millions of dead devices around the world, and that is not the case, as many things of life, it is a matter of luck, if its going to happen it will, if not, it wont, many users reported the issue at 5 or 6 months of use, if you pass this time period, chances are at your favor, mine is 6 months old, at the 2nd month I became aware of the sudden death issue, and flashed a rom and kernel with the fix, now, I think m PHONE IS OUT OF TROUBLE, i HAVE 7 months left of warranty period, so, dont torture yourself, use your device, and think of the best
From all that I've read about SDS you can hopefully avoid it altogther by using the latest firmware, even with the old firmware it seemed to happen more often to those who charged their phones overnight or got them too hot - although some failures seemed to be totally random.
I've always charged my batteries in an external charger, have power saving mode on and point an A/C outlet at the phone if used in the car windscreen to navigate. As a result it is always cool to the touch, electronics hate high temps - even 10 degrees higher than 'normal' can halve the lifespan of standard components, the memory chips in these phones are far from standard.
If you are too scared of SDS you can hard brick your phone and then give the phone to the service center so they will replace the insane chip free of cost

Lol, far from standard?
Anyways, thank you for your reply but that's just a workaround, not a fix. I'm planning to keep this phone for another 2 years and if the chip is faulty, there's a very high chance that it'll fail sometime in the near future and I can't afford to change the whole motherboard.

If you use a Kernel with the fix then the chance is not very high. In fact until this day I haven't seen a solid case where a S3 with the fix died all of a sudden. While before the fix devices were dying left and right.

I was always wondering, isn`t it also a kind of felony to reset the flashing counter via Triangle Away and then to play dumb if you get your phone hard bricked some time later?
if it was your fault and you claim it bricked by itself, then yeah, that's also insurance fraud, which is a felony
Yeah I thought so too,
haha I know so many cases here at XDA where people bricked their phones and many people just advised them to bring it to the service centre and to play dumb, so that they say that suddenly their phone wouldn't turn on.
Couldn't agree more with both of you. It's a felony, everyone is aware of that, but lots of people still do it, because at the end of the day, all they want is their phone back. Fully working.
