Encrypt Kindle HDX's ROM Possible? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

From what I've learned online, when rooting a device the changes that are done to the system are done on the ROM file. If true then is it possible to encrypt or overwrite on top of the ROM file to hide any past rooting information?
Reason: I've been having a USB port issue with my PC not being about to recognize the device when plugged into a PC using the micro USB cable. Searched online and found many different ways to troubleshoot the connectivity issue, but couldn't get it to work. Hit the MAYDAY button and said "no, it's not rooted", and yes it did update firmware to 13.3.2.1 so technically no, "it's not rooted"... anymore...
Question: Any ideas on how to "hide" this information to keep warranty?
I already have a replacement on it's way so I can side load through USB once again instead of using a cloud drive to transfer files back and forth. I personally think the current device I have has a corrupted file (some where) when the device died of having no battery power. Read it happening to other people, so I believe it. Used many cables, and many PC's including a Linux PC. Nothing, so Amazon support gave up, and decide to send me a replacement HDX since they concluded it's a physical hardware issue. As if one of the ports are not working to load drivers to the PCs using the pug-and-play method. I think that makes sense but I AM NOT 100% SURE OF THIS. I think it makes sense, but I'm not an expert yet. I don't know completely, so don't ask me.
What do you guys think? Am I pretty much screwed and need to forget about replacing this HDX? And probably wait for a better hardware-wise tablet to come out for a reasonable price? Or can I get the replacement, no questions asked?

just wipe the kindle from inside the rom like a return to factory setting and it will wipe your root and everything on the device including sdcard well internal sdcard anyway ,and you will be fine

Sounds good. I'll give feed back after they have received it, and again when they OK it. I was thinking that the factory reset only deals with the data on the "hard drive" portion, as in personal data or files like apps and books. I read that the ROM file of the HDX device is on the motherboard so I felt that there was no need to have to "delete", technically ignore/hide, the data of the old ROM file. I was wondering if there was a way to be sneaky and put a file that was the stock ROM and set the day the file was put there around the time the update 13.3.2.1 came out. I just don't want the issue of them saying that the warranty is void when the device is not rooted anymore .
Plus I can deal with a device that can not be recognized by a PC still. Just upload to a cloud my files using the Internet and all is good if they see it was rooted before and I have to deal with this old HDX.

Hey
Hello sachin, I have a similar problem. I would recommend you please do not install non-hcl market apps in the tablet. I am just back from the service center. Deposited the tablet today. The internal memory has a write problem & no matter how much i tried, the settings & the non-market apps i installed are not removing/changing. The tablet is good but i am responsible for screwing it up. Have patience & let the developers release a custom rom or mod for the U1.

It was the 4th day after the purchase. i installed everything i could in it through apk files. I once connected a 3g tata docomo stick in it & bamm!! It was blank! I read the manual & pressed the reset switch with a pin & it worked. The tab booted up & to my surprise no matter how much i tried i could not uninstall any of the applications, change any of the settings. As if it got write protected. Whenever i rebooted the tab it came back in the same state, read-only. The service center people are saying it maybe replaced. What do you think i should do? Does this have to do something with the root? I tried to install the 4 apk file google play setup (one by one install). I even connected it to the pc & formatted the inbuilt memory but it all came back astonishingly!

Hmm,
Have you tried to factory data reset?
Tried that a lot of times. no luck! Its a lemon now. Lets see if HCL replaces it. I know it could be my fault. Do you think installing the apps has done this? I think the 3g dongle has something to do with this? or maybe it was a defective piece. I am waiting for their call. Lets see what happens

Well i have 40+ apps downloaded but i have not faced this issue..
I have not tried dongle yet..
Hmm thats a sad situation.
Can you tell me what all you tried putting and removing since u bought this tab??
Like rooting. and apps and what kind of mods u tried does not matter they passed or failed.
Let me know .
Yes i was surprised it got screwed. things like these dont happen in androids. Anyways i am thinking it was a defective piece.
I installed the step by step four apk android market installer, another normal google play .apk file, all sorts of apps from apktops.com etc. It was working fine. It just got hanged once when i plugged in the stick & after resetting it from that position everything went wrong after that. as if the tab went into read-only mode. I could not change the settings or remove/install any apps. After every reboot it went back into that state. I think it has something to do with encrypt. Check you tab settings & tell me what do you think about encrypt??
The service center people are yet to call me. I hope they replace it.
Once it also gave me an error like "key chain not responding" or something. After that is got screwed.

It seems like that you encrypted your tab first and then during reset it might have changed the file settings to read only mode.
Dont worry its a software issue, they will fix it.
May be its a glitch with their software only. May be they have not done the proper testing before releasing the tab out in the market.
What i would suggest dont think its ur mistake tell them its their mistake.
Dont tell them you downloaded apps from different source.
Hopefully everything should be fine.
Can you tell me
1)Were you able to use google play market properly?
2)Did u face this issue that if you run some apps the screen goes upside down. I mean to say we have ME written at the top and when i run some apps the screen needs to be rotated 180 degrees to make it run properly.
I dont think the service center people have enough knowledge about the new tablet. I had a talk with their technician & he said it might be replaced. I was expecting it as its a new launch & its ICS. actually i saved a few apk files on the internal memory & as you know no matter how much i tired i cannot delete them. So that is worrying me as they will find out & confront me for the same.
Google play did worked but whenever i tried to install any app from it, it crashed & then didnt run again (until reinstall) & i got the error message "stopped unexpectedly" or something. I guess it needed root access because the tab was not permitting any non-hcl market apps to run on it.
And for your 2nd question, maybe that did happen but i didnt realize it because i used the tab just for 3 days & its hard to recall what i did.

Thanks! It means google play never worked. Actually in order to make it work it needs to be installed using the rom installation and some files needs to be changed as well to make it work.
As far as hcl support is concerned , all i can say they are horrible , i spoke to a tech support guy and he said i can install any app using google he wanted to say if the app is not there in the market i can download it from google with the extension apk and i can use it . he also confirmed it would not void the warranty .
I asked him for pc software and guess what he said. Sir you find the software on google. Then i told him to share the link then he gave some sendspace link which was not working. As i am working and i dont have access to the tablet right now. They were insisting on the serial number of the tablet which i was not carrying while i was calling them up.
Dont worry about your tab , it willl be fine.
I am looking for someone who can help me in rooting this device. it seems like this tab is not rooted yet. I have an app root check it says device is rooted but when i go to cache folder its all empty and when i try to go there using shell it says access denied.
ANY developer here who is willing to help us???
I can give Team viewer access along with tab connected and a a coffee or beer anything the developer likes.

HELP

Idiot Android newbie needs desperate help...

Hey guys....here's my situation.
I bought a Blu Touch Book 7.0 plus off of Amazon. Got it two nights ago. It's a true phablet. 512 RAM / 512 ROM - I was a little concerned but figured as long as I could root it, I was good to go.
Anyways - no I am not looking for a root. I was able to root it relatively easily after an initial failed attempt which required a factory reset - if anyone is interested, it required PDANET+ & UnlockRoot, SuperOneClick and other methods failed. I threw in a class 10 SD, and modded Android so all apps would be downloaded/installed to my SD card (I did this using the SDK & command prompt in USB debugging mode). I had researched apps previously and began to furiously download and tweak. I threw in a T-Mobile SIM, and everything was going well, I was very happy. It actually seems to be a well made device, though it's a little bulky and the phone function works much better with a bluetooth headset.
Then, I deleted Phone.apk. Despite all apps being downloaded/installed to my SD card, space was still at a premium and I had downloaded a third party dialer. I figured worst case, I could do a factory reset and/or could simply re-download the file (I was actually about to download a good backup program tonight after work, I've been busy the past two days and my anxiety to set up other stuff got the better of me). There was no immediate issue, but shortly later I got the dreaded 'com.android.apk has stopped' (or what not) message popping up constantly. I reset the device, it booted up but it was not reading my sim, and was missing icons. That's when I did something stupid-er. I found a Phone.apk file on the net, downloaded to my device, and copied it to the relevant directory.
Since then, when I boot up, first it shows that Android is upgrading, then it shows the 'unfortunately, the process com.android.apk has stopped.' I click 'Okay,' and it keeps popping up. I wasn't able to delete the wrong Phone.apk as there was not enough time for a longpress between error messages. I was able to initiate a factory reset - I was rather relieved - I had learned a bit the past day or two via trial and error, and I would be able to re-do everything perfectly this time.
But the factory reset did not revert to the right 'Phone.apk' file. So the problem still exists....
If anyone can help me, I would be oh so grateful....thanks...
A factory reset clears all user data & apps. If you deleted the phone app from system, you will have to reflash a stock zip, which I'm assuming you don't have, or find the stock apk and put it back in the right place as a system app.
If you have Titanium Backup you can use that to do it, provided you can find the stock phone apk.
Well, a problem is, I doubt that I will be able to find any ROMs or Phone.apk's for my device. At least not for a little while. There are some ROMs out there I believe for the original Blu Touch Book - but the original has a diff processor and is running Froyo rather than ICS.
Now, if I somehow can find a workable Phone.apk or a workable ROM, how do I go about flashing/copying? I can hook up to a PC (though I'm not aware of any USB storage mode that I can turn on), but the phone itself is just about unusable unless I can manage to delete the wrong Phone.apk file, as long as the file is simply missing it will boot up without the relevant features. And - let me repeat that I did a factory reset to try and fix this - it didn't fix my problem but it erased my apps and my root access....I can probably restore root but it won't stop the warning notification from popping up non-stop.
I was able to boot into safe mode previously - but it didn't help. If there is an applicable recovery mode, I can't figure that out. To my knowledge, there is no USB Mass Storage option that I can turn on.
I purchased from Amazon, so luckily I can return the item, and worst case they review it's condition and charge a restocking fee. Of course, I was looking forward to receiving this device for more than a week and have been obsessed with it since it's arrived...and I am also temporarily back to using Sprint (in Phoenix) on a 3.5" Windows Phone (I am an ex Windows Mobile fan boy, Windows Phone disappoints) after experiencing 6 MB/s 3G speeds on T-Mobile for a day or so (on a 7 inch screen and on a prepaid plan far cheaper than what I pay Sprint). I was about to port my number. Basically I am depressed. An irony here - I'm pretty sure Amazon sold me a used device that was advertised as new. On initial boot, the Android set up program did not launch. Upon my first factory reset, the set up program launched, and the dialer skin was different than what it was out of the box. The 'refuse product if this seal is broken' sticker on the packaging was partially broken, too, although it appeared to be partially in tact. But now if I try to play that angle, I come off like a scam artist...
Anyways thank you very much for your reply...all attempts to help are appreciated quite a bit...
Taking things one step at a time, let me simplify my request:
How can I delete (or replace) a system file from my device (in this case, the incorrect Phone.apk) remotely via a USB connection? I have the sdk installed on my computer, I can connect the device to my computer, but I can't really use the device until the file is deleted. Is it possible to push via ADB? Something to that effect? Will the 'push <local> <remote>' command work even if I do not have root access? What syntax is used to specify the path? Is it possible to simply delete a file without replacing it?
Does the Phone.apk file have to be specific to my device or could it be specific simply to my mobile carrier/frequency bands and/or ICS? I realized the Phone.apk file I copied to the device earlier was for the Huawei m835, a CDMA phone running Froyo...
Or, am I simply SOL?
Thanks....
One of the things about Android devices, as a former Windows Mobile user also, is that factory resets work differently as you've found out the hard way. In WM you could delete any system file you wanted and a hard reset would restore it. On Android if a required /system file is deleted you are SOL unless you have a way of restoring a backed up version. Its highly recommended IMO to have a working recovery like CWM, TWRP and a backup before you go messing around with /system files. But with a generic android device its probably not possible to find a recovery to install. You cannot write to the /system directory without root access, adb will give you an error. You may be able to use a phone.apk from another device with the same version of android.
I did find a Phone.apk from a device with the same manufacturer, on the same frequencies, with the same screen res, running the same version of Android. I have the full System/App folder if needed.
And I may have restored root access using UnlockRoot (I have read iffy things about the program but again it's all that worked for me initially). (EDIT - I do now have root access, I was able to verify the Superuser app on the device)
However when I load the SDK and type in 'adb root,' after the 'daemon started successfully,' I quickly get an 'error: closed.' And then when I try to push the Phone.apk file to the relevant folder, I get 'failed to copy / permission denied' (EDIT as I was warned of)
Is there anything I can load onto my SD card to help? I can run probably install an APK off of my storage card. Although I am very limited in what I can do - between error messages I can only get in one quick touch of the screen (and it usually takes a few tries per touch)...I can't do anything that requires a long-click...and I had also deleted the stock keyboard and the stock browser...limits me further...
Now, if I can delete my current Phone.apk and upload the stock keyboard, I am certain I can figure this out. There has to be some way to do this....
EDIT// I packed it up to return to Amazon. If there was a solution out there, oh well...
Like I said you may have been able to use Titanium to install it as a system app and that may have taken care of things once you set it as the default app and/or removed the faulty one.
^^ Right, but the challenge was installing Titanium Backup, and then using it while the error notification popped up on the screen every split second. Unless I am missing something, only way to download it would have required me to buy a Bluetooth keyboard and struggle to pair it so I could type (I had a USB keyboard that didn't work), maybe reassociate my device with my Google account (struggling to type letter by letter between each 'OK' click), have the apk sent to my device over unsecured wifi, put the .apk on SD (or just delete the wrong apk and reboot), and then hope that I could use Titanium backup to do the trick without the ability to press anything on the screen for longer than a half second or so...
Actually, I guess that could have worked, provided the Bluetooth keyboard worked. Of course, there's the chance that the Phone.apk I found for the similar device, might not have worked. Anyways, late now. I have a new one on the way, and I was shipped a slightly used one to begin with anyways, might be for the better. I kinda feel bad that the phone is now 'defective' as a result of my impatience/etc but then again I didn't do anything that the instruction manual warned against, not to mention the instruction manual says a factory reset restores factory data, which I think infers that it restores essential system components. And as much as I was an idiot, I don't do anything which should have caused a nearly non-recoverable error. That's on Google's end. Google doesn't even really discourage rooting and if you allow Android on a device with 512MB rom...
Learning experience. One of the first things I do when I get my new one, I download a backup program and find out if there is a recovery mode. In any event, I won't make the same mistakes twice. Thanks to those who replied or considered replying. Anybody has tips for the future, that aren't obvious or easily found, feel free...
If u r rooted this is very easy.
Open sdk and type su if u get "#" then u r rooted.
If so let us know

as a rethought I see u deleted system app so u were rooted

Firstly adb pull the file "/proc/mounts" open it using notepad and see how system is mounted.
then remount system as rw using
"mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /
<path to your system> /
system"
Now u can delete stuff or add new stuff without perm error

Eh, I already sent the phone back to Amazon. This, however, looks like a useful something to have access to in the future. Thank you for the link...
No way. Come on,why did u send it to amazon when u had me right here we could have fixed this so easily.

I installed PDAnet+ on my phone & PC (as a means of installing a driver for the TB Plus). Then, I ran a program called 'UnlockRoot,' followed instructions, and I had root. UnlockRoot v3.1 is what is installed on my computer.
I moved on awhile ago to the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 (Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 would be my best recommendation for a budget phablet). The Touch Book plus only held up so well (though I still have it and it still works albeit with no speaker and a screen that needs to be color-filtered due to a mysterious type of screen damage).
DOH!

Question how Android "system apps" works...

I did post this in the forum specific to my device, but I though I'd look for help elsewhere too, since the question is more basic to Android, and not really just my phone.
I recently rooted my LG G Pro 2 smartphone, did some stuff and everything was great. I was using CCleaner to remove some unneeded apps, but apparently, I removed the basic "phone" system app that allows the phone's cellular modem to work and make phone calls and texts (I'm thinking of it like a Windows driver, rather than a Windows software app). The unit works fine (WiFi, internet, and such), but I cannot make phone calls or texts, and I have NO bars (reception) at all.
So, here's the question: Can just adding in that system app back into the OS be done, or am I screwed?
I read two ideas...
One was to try and find a "phone.apk" and add it back to the data folder. But then I was unsure if "phone"apk" files are the same on all android phones or if each manufacturer has unique phone apk for each device.
The other idea I heard was to do a full restore, which would be OK, but then someone else suggested that if I deleted the phone apk, that I might have also screwed up the possibility of restoring the phone.
Finally, I used an undelete software after this incident, and the undeleter found a lot of apks and zip files, and I recovered those to a storage file on the SD card for now. But the problem there is that the files all just have number for names (for example, like "recovered_file_342579.apk or .zip). I have no idea if any of these are the phone file I deleted. I feel like I should be able to identify these files somehow, and just re-insert the phone file back to where it was.
What do you guys think?
Reflash your rom. Or flash a new one. Restore will not work. Trying to drop in a dialer apk will probably be a big headache you don't want to deal with.

Part of the problem I'm running into now is that I can't find ROM for this phone. I googled, and a couple websites listed stock ROM, but then the links don't work. Device-specific forum here on XDA doesn't list any actual ROMs, either. This phone was in the upper eschelon of LG's line couple years ago, and is still pretty good by today's standards. I find it hard to believe I cannot find some kind of working ROM for this thing.
Is using a D838 ROM (or whatever the equivalent American model is called) OK to use on a South Korean model that I have (F350S)?
I'd still like to know if I can just re-install whatever phone file I erased and get phone function back again.

Z4 RK3368 Android LP5.1/MM6 Octa Core 64bit 2/16gb TV Box

Hey Guys,
I have a couple questions about this android box I purchased that's had me somewhat puzzled.
I have been an avid android user over the past many years. I am familiar with flashing tons of roms to all the phones I have had. Except my s6, it just sucks for roms. Anyways I have purchased the android box in this link (can't post links this new) I can't seem to fine a manufacturer website, I've Google a million things about the box and searched but I can't find anything. even in the instruction book there's no website or anything.
basically I'm looking to figure out how to at least update this box. there's no option in about device. also I don't like how the flash drive on the device is split into nand flash and regular storage. I would like to merge them all into one. I am also looking for custom roms that might enable me to achieve that, however nowhere I look has this box in their forums or anywhere. maybe it's a cloned box? there are other boxes that have the exact same components (or so they say) with custom firmware, however I don't want to chance it and rich bricking this device.
anyone that can offer any help or lead me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance!

I just picked up one of these about a week ago and found instructions to install TWRP and update SuperSU. The box had 'root' out of the box but it was some specialized root based on an old version of SuperSU (1.93 I believe).
I have successfully installed TWRP 2.8.7.0 and updated to SuperSU 2.46.
Since this is just an android tablet essentially, does anyone know if you can flash these ROMs through TWRP?
Not to my knowledge, just use above tool. It will go alive once you are in bootloader with usb otg cable connected to win (of course with driver pack etc. installed). Titanium or else can do that, instead of trying to press reset button while powering on. Of course recovery will go back to default.

Are you running liamstears custom ROM or the 12/22 factory firmware?
The split internal storage is something I would like to do without, but I was wondering if it was changed on the 12/22 factory firmware?
12/22 firmware. Fast and stable.
Havent tried liamstears yet. Feedback if you do please.
awesome thanks! thats what I suspected when I was going through the firmwares for these devices. I just wasn't sure if the z4 rk3368 device would work on this one. I've seen a few brands with z4 and as I know with phones.. wrong brand and you're bricked lol. anyways.. I ended up buying a tronsmart vega s95 telos.. but it didn't come rooted. so I rooted it and now I'm getting play services force close and all sorts of bugs and errors.. maybe I'll just keep the z4. it seems to work better.
what link did you follow to get twrp installed?? same thing I'm guessing, punch z4 twrp in google and eventually come upon the right place.
12/22 factory firmware? mines stuck at Nov 10 I think.. it won't let me update using the rk settings app.. which is why I was fed up with it in the first place lol.
12/22 firmware. Unified 16gb App storage. More available with microsd card. Fully functional Kodi with channels, etc. 4k HEVC x265 movies. Youtube 1080p.
Easiest method to update rom is to put extracted update.img from zip file
http://chinagadgetsreviews.blogspot.ro/2016/01/download-latest-android-lollipop-511.html?m=1
on a sdcard / usb and boot. After about a minute into the Android desktop, system will ask for update prompt. Only applicable to system still with default recovery.
If you have some stability issues or with different recovery, you can backup your apps / data with Titanium etc. and then use above Factory tool restore new rom.
These roms usually come with their own recovery, but some modded ones with TWRP/full root, supersu and all. But you dont really need them.
thanks a lot man! I'm downloading right now and will test it on my box tomorrow after work!
I've tried 100 times and it just keeps saying failed to mount /mnt/external_sd (no such device)
I'm using my USB flash drive.
this is becomming a huge pain in the just to update I'm starting to think why this company can make these products and not have any support or anything for it . and that flash tool is in mandarin and I can't even figure out how to work that. I put in the update.img and press go.. but whenever I try to boot to download mode like you mentioned in one of the posts it just turns off the box.. this thing is literally a piece of junk. and so is this tronsmart vega s95.. same thing. it's extremely frustrating. whoever developed this z4 box did a really chappy job on the firmware.. and I do not recommend it to anyone..
If you had gone through the instructions pdf, it clearly shows how to change into English by pressing the World icon. Remember in bootloader mode the tv screen would be black, if you are using the tool. The big red button will turn into green to show readiness.
For automatic update you dont even have to go into recovery as seen in attached image. Easiest.
Hi Roland,
love to see that there are already XDA-members looking at the Z4 TV box. I have just ordered one and hope to get it within a few weeks. Just some dumb questions, hoping you can provide me with some information:
- I see that there are several 'versions' of the Z4: for instance Acemax, but I have ordered the Andoer. Are those just different manufacturers?
- Are there any differences in model/content (installed app's) per manufacturer?
- If my Andoer turned out to have an older firmware than the 22/12, could I still use the Acemax 22/12 firmware you refered to in your link?
- Kodi will be preinstalled, I saw. I do not know what version of Kodi that will be, but can it just be updated to the most recent version in the Google Play Store?
- I do not know what other apps are installed, but is it possible to de-install apps you do not need, or are they part of the firmware and impossible to delete
I know, part of the answers I surely will discover once I got the Z4, but I just can't wait to start experimenting, even it is only in my mind
Thanks in advance!
Jos
hi Roland
I tried that batch tool first which is the one I couldn't change languages in lol. but the other tool with the red button I changed into English. however I did not know that it would remain blank when in download mode. I will have to give it one more go tonight with it. I figured that I loaded it into bootloader and the z4 box light turned red so I thought it was off and didn't load to bootloader.
I also did the USB update and it would just fail on me every time I used it. the update prompt did come up and I pressed install. perhaps I need to check if USB debugging is on. I think it is but it wouldn't hurt to check. but I think I will have to go through the factory tool to update way for sure.
thanks for your help roland, I will write back after I give it another go tonight!
i can't find the 22/12 update ! can anybody share the link direct to firmware ?
@DriftJos
l have got an Andoer too. Most of these brands come from the same hardware factory and thus have the same specs/apps.
Yes you will use the same firmware https://mega.nz/#!JBBXgDgC!VSra8Hc6KR77Pvdw67eDpjeT_ku-TXdYgYaInSAfyvU (direct link @prisim) or several user dev roms. Unified 16gb app storage etc and the works.
You can uninstall bundled Kodi (by Titanium free etc.) by official Kodi Jarvis 16.0 beta 5 & such with pass-through support test builds @ http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252852
Again you will be able to uninstall useless apps directly or through Titanium.

Always mention the firmware version you are having and which recovery? The automatic update should work if you still have the factory recovery.
Check the FactoryTool process in attached images.
I'm trying to flash the firmware that I downloaded from that China gadgets site that was mentioned on this thread. I think it's the stock 12/22 for the device. and I have stock recovery.
I extracted the update.exe file and saved it to my USB drive plugged it in and restarted. relieved the update prompt. chose install update and it rebooted into recovery and tried to apply the update but it fails. I'm not ready to give up yet with this device lol. it's just another platform I have to learn. it took me a bit with smartphones to figure it out back in the day.. perhaps it's the same thing now..
and I'm updated to 12/22.. awesome. those pictures really helped me man thanks.
now as for installing twrp and all that. you mentioned that it's not really needed? I'm assuming I can flash any rom given they are in .img format using factory tool. however the benefit of twrp would be an easier interface for creating nandroid backups and clearing cache/factory reset. perhaps I will install it. i might give leamstears rom a try. I will let you know how it is if I do.
thanks again!
so I updated to the new 12/22.. everything works fine except with Google play store.. I keep getting a can't retrieve source error with everything I try to download. I've refreshed and factory reset the firmware 5 times now and kept trying.
so I got fed up with the stock so I tried leamstears rom and it works great.. except sometimes it just becomes completely unresponsive. I'm starting to think there is something wrong with this box. even on stock firmware from the box I've been having issues with unresponsive freezing.
what do you think of the nvidia shield?

The PlayStore error you were seeing is because the 12/22 firmware comes with a *very* old version (5.2.x). The PlayStore will eventually update everything to the latest version by itself but if you don't want to wait, go over to apkmirror.com and download PlayStore 6.0.5 and install it manually. Once you do, it should also update the Play Services to 8.4.x and your should be good to go. I had this issue as well but I had seen it before and knew I needed to update.
So far the 12/22 version has been great, and having the unified internal storage is a huge plus.
If you feel so inclined, knowing that some of the custom builds of Kodi take up a large amount of space... there is this trick that was introduced in Helix:
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Change data location for Android
This will allow you to have only the Kodi app on internal storage (~125 MB) and any data from addons/programs etc. in another location (such as an external SD).
I often
1. Install Kodi on internal storage
2. Zip up the contents of org.xbmc.com directory
3. Copy it to external storage
4. Unzip it in /external_sd/kodi_data
5. Create the xbmc_env.properties file that references my Kodi data location.
6. Delete the contents of /sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.com/
Voila! You have freed up internal storage.... You can also persist a Kodi setup this way or run multiple custom installs. If you re-image your media box, you can re-install Kodi and as long as the xbmc_env.properties points to your external_sd with your Kodi data, it will start right up back into your setup... :good:

Archos Platinum 55 - Settings Deleted...oops.

So... I have an Archos 55 and well, root is dangerous, particularly when you're being annoyed with pop up adverts and want to get them gone.
TL;DR:
So basically this all started when I found that web pages and adverts were just opening. Whether I was using the device or not, they'd just magically appear, sometimes ten at a time, accessing the internet at will. I was not best pleased as I have not long purchased the phone, but true to form, Archos have no idea what customer service means, so I was left to attempt to remedy the situation myself. Ordinarily, I would have just formatted and reinstalled the O.S, I do that with linux all the time alas I knew that was difficult.
Instead I sought to find out what exactly was causing the adverts. I deleted all the apps I had installed, but still the adverts kept coming. I did a factory wipe. Still with the adverts. At this point I was a bit stuck, so I grabbed an anti-virus app. It showed a few things that were causing problems including one trojan, under com.android.settings (or something to that name). I made a few enquiries and needless to say, this wasn't a false positive, but it had meant that I had a trojan...and I really don't like trojans. Cue the rage and the not thinking properly as I deleted com.android.settings without making a backup thinking... "shouldn't be too hard to put back"...oh how wrong I was...
I of course tried to make amends by grabbing a "copy" of settings from another site (and possibly a different phone) but I was told that it was ROM and no amount of permission changing was going to change that (I tried and I apparently failed, I may have possibly been doing something wrong, but I don't think my chown/chmod skills are `that` shabby).
The problem:
- No access to settings. Settings doesn't exist. (No access to USB Debugging either because that requires tapping the about phone bit and guess what...)
- Can't install apps as something has "Stopped".
- No access to WiFi
- Using Linux (Ubuntu something or other...15 I think).
- Mobile Tinkering Newb (But I'm not totally tech illiterate).
I do have access to fastboot mode apparently.
So what I think I need is a way to reinstall lollipop 5.1 so I can get back to square one, without (at least initially) using ADB (because I've tried and my device just refuses to show). I've also tried a few "needrom" things but, of course, they don't work because linux.
If anyone could possibly help me, I would be greatly appreciative in any way. I just want wifi back really. (I can see that wifi works and a network is available I just can't edit the settings to access it). If I can provide more information, please ask and I shall provide.
[SOLUTION]
Back up your device <- Essential
Grab a rom from NeedRom
Enable Fastboot.
Enable USB Debugging etcetera.
Use custom software (provided by NeedRom) (I know this seems dodgy but you try anything when you're desperate enough and this works so...if you're worried then take precautions and make a backup of your own phone first.) to open up the .pac file. Check where the files have been opened up to.
Copy the files to a more stable area (i.e from Temp to your Data drive), they should be in .img format as .pac basically appears to be some kind of archive that groups them all into one.
Use Fastboot (you might need to enable this so make sure you do it) and flash the .img files to the phone and sparse them to about 250MB.
Restart the phone.
Check phone works properly.
If works properly, consider donating to NeedRom.
Anyone?
Trojan
I have the same problem, but I didn't uninstall the setting, did your Trojan installed random apps too? Like MyApps or something like that?
Seeing the same problem I think the problem is that the device comes with it, but I haven't found anything else to do apart from installing avast to tell me when unknown sources get on to install a random app.

Hi! How did you solve the problem? Please let me know
It appears to involve installing an apk installer from the Google Play stores (any will do it seems). Then by installing a copy of the Settings.apk.
Neither of which I am able to do as, due to getting rid of settings Google Play won't work. So....
Edit. I managed to get Google Play installed and then installed an APK installer. However installing settings is restricted as security won't let me install unofficial apps. >.>

Hi,
What you have here is a virus.... and like me, it's probably embedded in settings. I.e It comes with the device.
There is no way to get rid of those adverts....except...by voiding your warranty. You will need to wipe your device and reinstall a rom, preferably not your original. (That or send it back to Archos). Taking your phone back to the store and demanding a refund is an option before I proceed further and this is the solution I recommend.
Take this moment to back up all your data.
What I did however and what seems to have gotten rid of them is firstly head over to NeedRom (search) and acquire a freely provided Rom of someone else's phone. There are two versions for the Archos Platinum 55 and it will depend on your specific phone.
Now you will need to flash (this will destroy all data on your phone so make sure you get it backed up) your rom. You can use the ADB solution but that couldn't work for me. So I used Fastboot instead, however to use this the rom provided by needrom is in a .pac file format, you need to get the .img file from it. You can do this by loading up the software provided by NeedRom (named FactoryUpload or something like that) load the .pac file and look at the file path locations. The one I checked was for System. I then went to where it said it was, in my case a Temp folder, copied and pasted all the data to somewhere not temp (all the .img files I needed were there).
Then I used Fastboot to flash the rom entirely there are much better Fastboot tutorials out there than I can explain myself. This flash included System, Recovery, Cache and basically everything, however it wouldn't let me do it all at once. I had to use a particular "flag" or "switch" so that it would `sparse` all the files over 250MB (that was the number I chose) and it worked after that.
This is the only way without returning the phone to get rid of the adverts *if* the virus is indeed in Settings. There's no way to remove Settings safely. I tried.
