How to change Recent Apps button to Menu button? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Has anyone tried to find a way to change the recent apps button to Menu button? I think that it is more convenient and the recent apps could pop up with long press of the button.

No, because no one would want that (well, besides LG).
I guess you can root and use a navbar editor app and change it yourself.

You need to be rooted.
1. Install Xposed Framework from here for Android 4.2 http://dl.xposed.info/latest.apk ,
Here for android 4.3/4.4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48484642 ,
2. Inside Xposed, install and enable GravityBox,
3. Open GravityBox, under Navigation Bar Tweaks, enable Master Switch,
4. Click back and search Navigation Key Actions,
5. Under Recent Key, you can change Single Tap action to "Show Menu",
Long Press action to "Recent apps",
6. Reboot, Done!

Thanks for the reply.
I have already tried that but with kitkat version of gravitybox cause I am on GPe rom but it does not work. Have you tried that with jb version and it works for you?

Install softkeyZ APP go to install directory in sdcard then collection select the icon you want change and rename it to MENU or any key you want then select the key from the app ...........ALL DONE..........

I am not sure I understood what you proposed to do.
Although I tried it but the only thing I managed to change is the icons only, not their function.

I am on stock 4.3 and works perfectly. Not sure about GPe 4.4.
Other apps suchas softkeyz, UDN, GMD softkey, LMT launcher,... are all overlapping with keyboard when typing.
BTW, should press thanks button instead of saying it

GravityBox definitely works for remapping keys on a 4.3 rom ~ not sure about 4.4. I know xposed doesn't play nicely with ART, are you running dalvik or ART (if art that may be causing the issues).

Yeap, my rom is ART compatible, so maybe this is the problem.
EDIT: Solution found in gravitybox forum... I had to enable master switch in Navigation bar tweaks!

Good. I edited my post about that.
Gravitybox can even exchange the place of Back and Menu key. I came from Samsung phone and I am used to the Back key at the right side

[Mod] 3 dot menu removal. Button remap (Coming Soon)

I have got rid of the 3 dot menu bar which is easy(zip file posted). But trying to remap recent apps was a fail. When I try to remap recent to menu it would affect home button not working so in the zip is the file the original file to remap buttons if you want to take a look and see if anyone here can remap recent to menu. AND eventually me or someone else will figure out long press remaping.
As well I figured out using the GMD Gestures app from playstore, you can create your own gesture and set it to recent apps if you want.
FYI for the 3 dot menu bar removal it requires you to delete the build.prop via recovery file manager than flash. For some reason it wont replace the file. So delete than flash and same with the button remap file in the zip.
THE BUTTON REMAP IS JUST FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LOOK AT THE FILE TO SEE IF THEY CAN FIX.
THE NO MENU FILE IS A FLASHABLE TO GET RID OF MENU BAR.
well to fix the files not being overwritten via the flashable i changed your updater-script to /dev/block/mmcblk0p32 vs /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 but also didn't have any luck on the mod working either..the first time it made my recents button basically do nothing my home button seem to just select things and then backed as usual.. and then i edited the .kl file thinking maybe since you had things things right next to eachother and not on each line it caused a error i just had the menu (3 dots) issue disappear but the recents key worked as usual.. maybe just user error.

You might want to check with runandhide about long press remapping:

He got this working on the evo lte by changing this code:

I agree with you that the recent apps button should be menu on tap and recent apps on long press.

I will pm him and see if he can help with long press.
He fixed long press on home but that is already google now which I like. I'm asking him about long press on recent key.
Actually the modified build.prop is what gets rid of 3 dot menu bar.
What's the reasoning behind making the recent apps button do menu upon tap and actually show recent apps upon long press? That seems logically backwards to me.
Maybe its just because I use the recent apps button more than any other, but it seems like it should be like it is stock and then upon long press show the menu. Isn't that how HTC did it officially on their update to the One?
Obviously its a matter of personal preference - glad to see someone working on this (thank you!) because that bar is driving me nuts haha.

So if I flash this MOD ... will this just remove the annoying 3 dot menu on the bottom of my phone that comes up on all the screens/apps that I use.
Or am I going to lose the functionality of pressing recent apps, home, back?
whats this MOD do, as is..?

Well since my zip file does not replace files then all you do is delete build.prop via recovery file manager and flash. It won't mess with capacitive buttons unless you deleted that file too but don't so only 3 dots will go away.

Probably because you have had to long press for recent apps since android cupcake. Its natural.
So if I am following this thread correctly, this WILL completely remove the 3 dotted menu, HOWEVER, we have NO access to getting in to an app menu until the recent button can be remapped. Correct?

yes or you can download GMD Gestures app from play store and set a gesture to menu. Thats what I do.
So like mentioned above, the 3 dot menu will be gone and capacitive buttons will work as normal?
and use the GMD gesture app to get into menus of applications?
can we revert this process if something happens. like replace the files it removes.
obviously in a ZIP bc we cant push them with root explorer yet

But that was a long press of the home button correct? A lone button dedicated to recent apps functionality wasn't introduced until ICS. Considering the vast majority of general users(not us XDA types), I would argue that most people had never heard of the recent apps feature until el Goog stuffed it down everyone's throat when they shifted into the new 3 button system. I feel like that has become key to the operation of Android and considering the changes from 4.1 to 4.2 Google intends to keep it that way and build around it.
I know this is a mod that really isn't for the general public, but I feel like Google is a smart company. Just browse through their dev guidelines and you can see that they take every single detail into account and invest HEAVILY into finding the best way to operate Android. -I don't feel like this design change was a shot in the dark for them.
Of course, this would all be moot if HTC had decided they weren't 'too cool' for on-screens.
Sorry, ill get off my UX soapbox haha
So there is no 3 dot removal yet? Where does it place it to?

There is. The mod I posted removes 3 dot but you need to delete build.prop via recovery file manager before flashing because it will flash a modified build.prop.
Also using GMD Gesture app for menu.

[XPOSE MOD] Remap double-press home to long-press search (No more SVoice!)

Hi!
I should probably start by pointing out that you need the Xpose Framework installed to use this! Click here for the Xpose APK and more information about it
I've been looking over the Xpose Framework recently and I've become really impressed with it. So in learning it, I went ahead and corrected a few of the things I didn't like about the stock TouchWiz ROM on our Note 2's. I thought I'd go ahead and share this mod because I think I'm not the only one who prefers google voice search over S-Voice. The best bit, though, is that long-press search is just a regular Intent that any app can answer, so you're not locked down to Google voice search either!
I've attached the HoldHome APK in the post below.
One of the other things I managed to 'correct' via Xpose was that snoopy SysScope app, incidentally. I'm a bit concerned about releasing that one though, for obvious reasons.
Hope you guys find this useful :fingers-crossed:
File attached in this post.
Will test this out after work. I have been using Home2Launcher, but would like not to... expect an edit around 2AM EST.
EDIT - unfortunately it does nothing for me, double press had no response. Disabled the home2launcher, rebooted after activating module, no luck...

Hmm. Did you disable the the S-Voice activation on home press setting in the SVoice app itself? (Menu button in the SVoice app -> Settings) You need to have that setting enabled so the mod can hijack the intent it generates.

Thank

Or can configure to voice calendar too.

Im running stock touchwiz on my Note 2, with the Xposed framework and I can't get this to work. The module is there and enabled. I have nova launcher installed but removed all gestures. I have disabled s voice option as you stated above.
Holding the home button simply brings up the multitasking menu. Double press does nothing now that I have disabled it in the s-voice settings.

Have you remapped the long press search? Long press home and you should see a magnifying glass. Hit that button and select Google Now.
Where do I remap the long press search? Like I said holding the home button simply brings up the multitasking menu. Double press the home button does nothing now that I have disabled it in the s-voice settings.
When you long press the home button and the multitasking menu comes up there should be 3 buttons at the bottom. One is a trashcan, one is to check the RAM and the middle button should be a magnifying glass. Hit that and set Google Search as your default. Here's two screenshots to show you before and after. It goes from magnifying glass to the Google logo.

You got it wrong... "s voice option" needs to be enabled.
Then next time you double click the home button, instead of having SVoice, you get a choice of apps which can react to a "search longpress" event (in TouchWiz ROMs, "double click the home button" = "search longpress").
For me, I could select among phone, widget locker, go sms, google now, secure settings,...
Select the app you want and click "this time" or "always" depending on what you want.
Done!
Very nice module!

If you already have the G icon then you already have Google search... You don't need the magnifying glass. The magnifying glass comes up when you have S Voice disabled and nothing mapped to the search function. Disable S Voice and then use this module. Do you understand what this module is for?

Does the 4.3 update give option to restart device?

I don't know why 4.2 didn't have an option to reboot the device, i am pretty used to having this option on my phones i have had for the last 2 or 3 of them and was hoping this 4.3 update would finally give the option on this tablet.
i can't understand why it wouldn't be there as it's a bit of a pain when you do want to restart it.

Don't forgot we're on XDA, some bright dev will figure it out soon enough.
They always do.
See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588442
Like I said before, they always do!
So, to answer your question:
1. follow the steps in the link posted above.
2. Install Xposed framework http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401
3. Install Advanced power menu module
4. PROFIT!
Enjoy!
You can also install Xposed module GravityBox instead.
Besides the power menu, it gives many more options, and together with the module Xperia Flip Settings the status bar can be modified to look and behave nearly like AOSP.
Also GravityBox has the option to use Expanded Desktop, i.e. hide the navigation bar.

That forces the device to shut down. It is like pressing and holding the power button on a PC. The device doesn't do all the processes needed for a safe shutdown. So, yeah, just use that in case the device is stuck.

[Q] Enabling lollipop nav keys?

In the past on kitkat I used a build.prop edit to enable the nav keys on my note 3. It worked fine and I used rom toolbox's build.prop editor to do so. Now however I'm on lollipop and I'm rooted but I'm not sure if that will work.
The reason I'm asking here instead of just tying it out is because I don't have a backup to revert to and I've seen some conflicting answers while googling this. So an anyone confirm that adding "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" will still work?
-thank you
Make a back up of your build.prop.
Like this
Copy the build.prop and paste it in the same system folder and replace the name.
/system/build.proporiginal
Add what you need to and reboot... if it dont work you can use twrp file manager to delete the build.prop and rename the original.
Thank you. I'll uh try later. I found an alternative in the meanwhile that works great. But first I need to get a custom recovery.

Cool. Great to know. Do you have an screenshots?
With that string added to build.prop, it breaks screenshot (even palm motion). If they are important, I would find another way to take screenshots or wait for xposed.
I can tell you what the buttons look like and what they do, but that's it.
The first button is a backwards "Play" button and it is the same as "Back" but long pressing it does nothing.
The second looks like an "o" centered vertically and horizontally and is the "home" button. Long pressing brought up options for me of Google search, Tasker, or Pressy.
The third button looks like "Stop" from a music player and is the app switcher (recent apps). No long press.
The icons are white and the bar is black
I searched for a way to edit their function but couldn't find anything that didn't require xposed or Softkeyz app.

Change action for hardware buttons

Hey xda community,
i want to bind some actions to my hardware buttons since my ROM does not support doing it.
I want to bind home button "long push" to lock screen, long push of back button to kill app (present open) and long push of menu button for "menu" inside apps.
Any way to do it/tutorial? I don't want to use external apps like: Buttons remapper (no root).
Is there any way to add functions from other ROMs like (slim/RR/many others) to currently flashed ROM (caf)? Please help.
