[Q] How to use phone storage as primary saving location? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I have Iocean X7S phone, which runs perfect except one problem. X7S has opportunity to save apps to either internal storage, phone storage or external SD-card. Every location works as saving files. However, I can't use phone storage as apps saving location. There is Phone storage and SD card opportunities in Settings -> Storage -> 'Default write disk' . However, whichever I choose as primary, there doesn't happen anything. If external SD card is mounted, there is "Move to SD card" button in apps and a tab 'SD card' in Settings -> Apps. If I unmount SD card, there disappears opportunity to choose primary save location, SD card tab and button to move app another location. However, there reads 'Phone storage app 0.00B' and 'Phone storage data 0.00B' in apps instead of 'SD card app and data' when SD card is unmounted. So I think it is some kind of software issue.
I have tried factory reset different ways without any result, there is still only opportunity to keep apps in internal storage or SD-card. In \storage\sdcard0 is external SD-card and sdcard1 is phone storage.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem with my iOcean X7S too. It's very very annoying! I have tried resetting and so on too, and nothing works. There must be a bug in the firmware.
What version of ROM do you have under Settings/About Phone/Biuld Number. Mine is X72 20140301-160406 (1st March 2014 I guess). I think this is the most up to date official ROM unfortunately.

My build number is X7S 20140120-183101. It's strange that it doesn't infrom the new software update, even when I manually try to search updates.
I also put message directly to Iocean service, they just said that they just said thanks to infrom the problem. Maybe you should also put a message.

You can download the most up to date official firmware from Need ROM. I think the necessary tools to flash it to your phone are in the download, but I have not cheched as my X7s is up to date. Here's the link http://www.needrom.com/mobile/iocean-x7s/
Unfortunately I've noticed mine has a problem with the screen so I'm trying to return it. If I move my finger very slowly across the bottom quarter of the screen whatever you are touching responds very erratically. If you're browsing the web, pages jump around suddenly; if you're dragging an icon across the bottom of the screen, it jumps around all over the place, even if you keep your finger on the screen.
Mine also has a problem where the green notification light illuminates when the battery is only 90% charged. Sometimes restarting the phone makes the battery go from, say, 60% charge right up to 100%. Cycling the battery and clearing battery stats didn't help.
It's such a shame because apart from these issues I really like it!
If you decide to flash the newer ROM it is already rooted now. If you head to settings/security, you will see an option to enable root access which is very useful. Also, if you choose to enable developer options (by tapping on the build number six times), back on the main settings page a new 'Advanced' category appears. This allows you to enable the volume buttons to wake the screen, and to adjust the transparency of things like the notification bar

Thanks really for telling the problem in your X7S version. Mine hasn't any of those problems, except that notification led turns green in 90% but not any charge related. I wouldn't really count led issue as a problem
So good to know that newer version has the same screen touch problem as other X7 series phones, I have wathced videos of them on Youtube. I think this firmware ehich I have works best for now
I don't have option to get root acces from Settings/security tab, I have rooted it with general MTK6582 root method. So they seems to have added automatic root to the new version (and a lot of bugs).

Yes, I'd been hoping I would have the same firmware as you. I guess the seller must have upgraded it for me before despatching it - a nice gesture of course, but the easy root featue is the only useful thing! I can't make up my mind whether or not to risk getting a replacement or buy something else.

[Q] Play Store Insufficient Space, App Install Target, Resize Partitions?

I'm running the stock unrooted AT&T Jellybean 4.1.2 on my Galaxy Note i717. Since upgrading to 4.1.2, I've been occasionally getting the dreaded Play Store "Insufficient Space" error when app updates are being applied. This behavior seems random, and cannot be replicated. A reboot clears it ... for a little while.
I've spent several hours searching XDA and Google. I've found a thread that discusses partitions in the i717, and suggests moving apps to the external SD card. That's fine, but it seems like a partial solution, since even after moving an app to the SD card, *some* of the app still appears to be in "device storage".
Here is what I see on my phone:
- System Storage: 1.69GB / 1.97GB
- USB Storage: 10.17GB / 10.84GB
- SD card: 57.96GB / 59.46GB
It seems to me that if I WAS running out of space, I should be able to remove files from "USB Storage", to free up more room for Apps. This, however, seems not to be the case. It appears that ALL apps I download are installed to the much smaller "System Storage" partition. When I move an app to the SD card, space is freed up in "System Storage" (and NOT "USB Storage") and taken up on the external "SD Card". But of course in the stock configuration at least, not all apps can be moved, so, again, if I want to install additional apps, I will eventually hit a wall - and, it seems, a very NEARBY 2GB wall, beyond which I cannot really install apps.
So, my questions are:
1. Am I reading this right? Are we really installing apps to the much smaller System Storage partition instead of the larger user-access "USB Storage" partition? Or do I have a setting wrong or an artifact left over from upgrading?
2. Can I repartition this phone (I know it means a full wipe, I'm fine with that) to get more space in System Storage so I can comfortably install more apps? If so, how might that be done?
3. I've rooted this phone in the past, and have run custom ROMs on it but have never hit this particular problem before. Do I really need to root or go custom again to solve this problem? Would doing that solve the problem automatically, or do I have to "do something" once I'm rooted?
4. Is there a better way of dealing with this (other than "don't install so many apps!" ) that I'm not aware of?
Thanks in advance for any help/pointers/guidance!
Glen
go to manage apps and look at downloaded apps. sort by size and see if any are unusually large. some apps are not designed well and store data on the system side rather than use sd. i know next issue is one of these. if you download to many magazines it will use up all free space. if any that you dont use daily and are large i would remove. i keep a copy of all my apps on my external card. only apps i use daily are installed and any others i can install when needed without having to download again. also good when you dont like an update and want to go back to previous version.

Thank you for this. It seems to me that ALL the apps I've downloaded - including such favorites as Google Chrome - are installing themselves completely inside the System Storage, and that NONE of the apps are installing in the larger USB storage partition.
So it's not only a matter of poorly-written apps, it seems to be a systemwide thing. Each time I remove an app, space gets freed up out of the 2GB system partition. Nothing changes in USB storage.
How can I approach this problem?
You are confusing yourself. First off it is NOT "system storage". It is "device memory". That 2GB is the default location to install most apps. However you can move most apps to the "USB storage" (10GB) in Application Manager. In application manager it is called "SD card" and not "usb storage". Do not confuse sd card with your external micro sd card. That is referenced as SD card in the storage menu but it is actually external SD card.
It is poorly written software by samsung. When you go to move apps in the application manager it should say usb storage and not sd card. And when you move them back it should say device memory and not device storage.

Okay, thanks for explaining that. I understand. So I assume there is no way to repartition or change the default to get more room for apps? Rooting won't assist with that? Seems that my only choice is to manually move what apps I can off of device memory onto USB storage?
Thank you!
Glen
I have not seen anyone repartition the memory so it would be like the Galaxy S3 and S4 (Device memory and USB memory combined as 1). So yes, your only option is to move what you can to the USB storage. It is a samsung fail to have the memory partitoned on the Note as they do.

Okay, thank you! I'm glad they've at least fixed this in newer models. I have an N7100 and N8000 and neither have the two partitions either. Just sad we can't fix it on the Note.
Thank you for your replies and explanations!
Glen
It would be awesome if a dev could somehow pull these together.
I actually put up a similar request several months ago, but didn't word it like this. I have several other devices, and they all use the space much better than Samsung does on this one. I have a Asus Transformer, that uses the entire internal space, as mentioned, and so does my Nexus. The silly 2 GB limit Samsung puts on these really wastes the capabilities of the device.
This is how to do it
Confirmed working on the i717

[Q] Camera Default Storage

Ok haven't rooted this phone because I'm happy with stock Android 5(GPe) here.
Was looking at a friends phone HTC One and it has the option to store pictures to the SD card slot
I remember seeing that with 4.4 and later we were supposed to get back the storage capabilities for selecting SD cards.
Can't find this option and the searches I've done keep showing Samsung which I've moved away from(Love this phone).
Auto backup is on so i'm covered there but my internal memory is getting lower and I've got a lot of space left on my 64gb SD card.
So I must be slow because I can't find where I turn this feature on, or do I need to download a custom camera app to get this to work?
Thanks for the help.

On regular Sony Lollipop Rom there is the option to set default storage. If it isn't available on GPe you should at least have the option in settings-storage to transfer data from internal to external.
unfortunately neither one of those options exist in the GPe version.
Looking for ideas since I've got 45gb left on my SD card but just over 1.5 gb on my phone. I thought the save to SD card slot came back in KitKat but I can't seem to move anything to run off the card.

SD card can't grant access

I broke my phone and replaced like for like with a new Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3. I'm stumped as to why I can't grant access to apps to the SD card.
The phone is running lollipop, not rooted. The SD card is 128 GB, formatted exFAT, with a volume label (JE-SDCard).
I've already gone through a) complete factory reset and b) remove the card, reformat and try again. Neither worked.
I can access the card fine (add, delete, move) through the stock Filer app. Some apps (DroidTV) can access the card fine. But when I try to use SDMaid or Solid Explorer, the apps try to go through the grant access process, but when the OPEN FROM dialog comes up, it only shows two entries: RECENT and INTERNAL STORAGE, with no option to select the SD card. I have checked and unchecked the HIDE SD CARD/SHOW SD CARD options in the menu, with no affect.
I don't particularly want to root, as my banking app won't work on a rooted phone, but may have no other option. I've searched lots of online sources of Android help, and the only things I've seen to resolve this are to ensure the card is labelled (it is) and to check that SHOW SD CARD is enabled (it is). Anyone have any ideas?

Yes, done that. See my note for what I've tried. I've formatted the card twice.

I've searched extensively on Google, and have done everything suggested: reformat card, ensure card has a label, factory reset, ensure SHOW SD is selected, etc. None of these have worked for me. Just checking to see if anyone else had had the same issue that can't be resolved by the usual fixes.
Thanks.

have u tried other sd cards on your phone?
if those works.
There's must b a problem with this phone and cards compatibility.
Hi
I've got this too - I'm sure it was working last week - I decided it was time for a reset of my phone and to update to latest firmware (I'm rooted so updates don't drop in automatically) now I can never see anything in the GRant Access box, apart from "recent" regardless of "SHow SD Card"
OP: if the phone is new, take it to the shop and show its not working. Get a working replacement, dont bother fixing whats clearly broken when it shouldnt be.
Eserim: mine does that if its been plugged into the pc, then unplug it. sometimes it doesnt show. I have to reboot and then it works fine, I dont know why it does this sometimes.

Can the phone even support a card that big. If I recall right that device has a max sdcard size of 64gb.

Good point, my other phone only half accesses my 256 gb card, sometimes not at all.

SD Card being 'ejected' while in standby/sleep

Hi Everyone,
I'm having problems with my Alcatel Flash Plus 2, running on Marshmallow 6.0 with regards to its SD storage capability.
There are no issues with the SD card as it is detected normally on other phones, as well as the PC and my current phone itself.
Problem is - whenever I turn off the phone for sleep/standby, a few minutes later the SD card is no longer detected, as if it was ejected. Restarting the phone fixes the problem.
I suspected that it's a battery optimization app that may have caused the service responsible for the SD card to close. Unfortunately, I did several troubleshooting steps but did not resolve it. Here's a list on what I did:
Uninstall any app related to battery
Unselect option "Standby intelligent power saving"
Turned off Battery Saver
Set "External Storage" & "Media Storage" as NOT OPTIMIZED on Battery Optimization
Wipe cache and data for External Storage
Wipe partition cache
There's one more app that I tried to uninstall but was unable to do so.
An app aptly named "Boost". It's a built-in application of the phone and has device administrator rights, so I'm unable to uninstall it without root. I was only able to get the apk name, which is com.tct.onetouchbooster.
Unfortunately, the phone that I have doesn't have much info about rooting, so I'm not sure if I want to head to that direction yet. Is there any other way that I can just disable this app on startup? Or could it be that there's another reason why the SD card stops being detected? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Up
Anyone? Does somebody have an idea on what to do here?

Apps "disappearing" from SD card, but different ones every time I reboot

Hi,
I have a stock LG LM-X410ASR (Xpressions Plus) that came with Android 8.1.0 installed. I installed a 32 GB SD card and installed a bunch of apps. On this phone, if you go to Settings/General/Apps & notifications/App info, you can tap on an app tap on "Storage," and then "Change" storage from internal to SD, if the app allows it. I did this for every app that would allow it, except for some that run better from internal storage, or whose widgets won't work right unless they remain on internal storage.
I've had this phone since the weekend after Thanksgiving, having bought it on sale at Wal-Mart. Since then, it's been performing well, until today.
I have Nova Launcher installed, as well.
I was updating apps in Google Play, and Castbox didn't want to cooperate, so I cleared Play Store cache and rebooted the phone. When I rebooted, I saw a lot of grayed-out shortcut icons on my home screens. DriveSync also had a failed sync. When I went to DriveSync, it wanted me to find the root of the SD card, again, so it could have permission to write to the SD card. When I tried to enable this access, I could see the SD card, but the hex name was not visible and DriveSync did not accept my selection.
Neither Astro File Manager nor the native file manager app would allow me to copy, move, delete, or create files on the SD card any longer.
I have rebooted the phone multiple times, and have been paring down my apps in preparation to do a factory reset, hoping this will solve my problems. Each time I've rebooted the phone, a different selection of apps was grayed out or missing.
At this point, I'm not sure whether I have an SD card problem or a hardware problem with the phone. I would like to find out so that I can replace the SD card or file a warranty claim with LG.
Would a factory reset followed by installation of apps that can be "changed" to SD storage, changing the storage location, and rebooting the phone be sufficient, or should I try this with a brand new SD card installed?
Thanks1
