Hi so I am a complete newbie I just joined today.
I am trying to get Cyanogenmod 11 for my Galaxy Player 4.0. I have never rooted or done any of this stuff.
I would like a step by step guide on how to flash, sorry if I am asking for too much I don't want to brick my player.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537248
I downloaded the ZIP file but I don't know how to use it, I'm sorry I am a total newbie.
Can I just flash what I downloaded with Odin? Someone please help I am clueless right now.
First you have to install terrasilent as you need CWM in order to flash CM for it. Here's it's link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1643384
If you need a guide on how to flash, you can follow up this thread.
After you had succesfully flashed terrasilent, you need to put the zip file you downloaded into your device.
Then you need to turn off your device and pressing Power, Vol+ and Home. You will then go into CWM. When you're in CWM, you can follow up the actual CM11 instructions and you'll get safely in CM.
Thank you so much for replying! I have a question, you wrote in your guide that I should make backups? And my efs should be intact? Please explain sorry.
SO EXCITED THOUGH
Sorry for the double post! But I have TerraSilent! This is all so new and exciting to me! :fingers-crossed:
Was I just suppose to flash 1.3.5 or all of them? Sorry for being a noob..
I don't really have any important files, except pictures, and silly games, but what should I backup? And I how do I make the efs intact.
thnakyou thank you thank you

All your files except your games should be intact. If you want to backup them, use titanium backup to do so.
As for efs, it is something really important and you need to backup it. To do so, when you have terrasilent, (1.3.5) you need to do the command found on the cm11 thread while in superuser mode and using adb.
Here's the FAQ if you have some more questions related to root:

woah sorry quick question what is ADB?
I'm NOT rooted, SO SORRY, my player is clean, the only thing it has on it is TerraSilent.
Could you also give a quick tutorial on rooting
How and where would I enter this command?
dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/efs.rfs
Would any of these work for a quick root?

Hmm I think it'll be too long to download + set up ADB for the moment so I have another alternative.
First download this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=fr
After having downloaded it, go into the app. Type su and grant the super user permissions requested.
Then do the command to back your efs which is:
dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/efs.rfs
It should backup your efs and you're good to go for CM11.
One last final question please, my device is rooted, it is on usb debugging mode, I have ADB installed, where do I plug in the code
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/efs.rfs
It says 'dd' is not recognized as an internal or external command.

You need to do an adb shell. Can you just confirm if your device is detected by doing "adb devices"
If it's recognized then you can do
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/efs.rfs

Hmmm looks good but just for checking, if you check the efs.rfs, you should have a 6-7 MB file. If so, you can continue.

How do I check the efs, rfs? Is it a folder on the sd card, I don't see it
It does say 6553600 bytes at the end, which is right hopefully, but I dont see it any folders

I'd recommend doing a Google search of adb and not try anything with it until you understand it. And you could try dvhexers version of faux's kernel to fix the sd card, but you should probably just use his fixed cm10 rom.

what about the 16gb issue?
Sounds like you jumped in without being fully prepared.
you need a working knowledge of ADB and the BASH shell in order to proceed.

So I am stuck in a bootloop and no obvious way out.
US Galaxy Player 4.0
Rooted and been on custom roms for a year now. Problem started after upgraded to latest CM. Tried going back to stock but no luck in resolution. I am able to get into recovery and download mode and flash with odin. I can run adb shell. Just won't boot. The error message I get is as follows:
"E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2"
In my adb shell I can see that there is no "mmcblk0..." files at all.
I have tried to go through the full stock recovery and used the PIT files and the stock rom through odin. I get the same boot loop and cant get the data to wipe due to the same error. I can flash anything through Odin easily without fail but everything is stuck in boot loop. I just don't seem to have /data to wipe.
There are some other posts around which indicate the Partition may be screwed but I am not sure what it is supposed to look like or the command line syntax to use to correct.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468213&highlight=wipe+data+shell
I have several nandroid backups on an external location but now I can't get the external card to recognize in CWM so haven't been able to try to revert backwards that way. I have backup of efs and all other stuff just can't seem to get to it.
Anybody with Ideas or direct help are greatly appreciated

This is how we fix that with the Player 5 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2398120&page=4 (read the whole thread from page 4 on)
You'll need to do pretty much the same thing but you need an image from the Player 4.:good:

Thank you Meticulus. I see that you were involved in the thread I referenced too and this is where I figured I needed to go. However this is where I get tripped up. The main issue being that I don't have an image from a 4.0 US player. The thread I linked to had the Intl Player shown... There were even a few requests for the US version later on in the thread.
So- Anyone want to share their US player working partition table?
Is this information contained in the .PIT files somehow?
anyway to retrieve this?

As far as I know that's the only way to do it is with the picture.... Be patient, I'm sure someone will post an image...

adb shell
fdisk -l /dev/block/mmcblk0
Then post a screenshot, or just the output.:highfive:

We only have mmc blocks for the actual storage of the device. The system partition and others are pure raw nand (which is why we use mtd and yaffs2)

Most probably because it will only touch /data and internal storage. Actually this is the first time I see a problem like this for the 4.0.

So any confidence in the international vs the US version being the same?
Now the next thing is I used the command fdisk to start trying to recreate the partitions using the post instructions you recommended. I did not get an option for "new". I attached the output from the shell command. Tried looking up shell command references on fdisk but is not helping me here. Is it because there is not mmcblk0 at all? I don't seem to be getting into the command mode of the fdisk command.
If I use fdisk -l /dev/block/mmcblk0 I get "no such file or directory"

Not sure what that would be for the 4.0..
Here is another place you can check /sys/bus/platform/devices/s3c-sdhci.0/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001/block/mmcblk0
Here is the output of that. No further.
I am already on fresh Odin flash. Several attempts actually. I have been able to flash back to Stock (and use PIT) files, access stock recovery. I did this first to think I could restore to OEM. Then flash the Terra-Silent kernel to obtain CWM and the IcyFusion Rom (did this again this morning so I could get adb to link). These are the only Odin flashable that I am aware of for the 4.0. Obviously nothing boots because the issues discussed here.
Thank you.

Would this kind of thing be backed up in a nandroid?

No, It wouldn't be backed up in android...
I'm betting that the U.S. Odin ROM on that page is not a "full" recovery rom either... I'm downloading right now to check. If it isn't, we need to find out how safe it is to flash an INT version first then flash a USA over it.
On the 5.0, we can do that... and everything is OK but don't know about 4.0...
EDIT: Seem like the only difference is that INT has bootloaders and USA does not. That doesn't help us...

You need to make sure sure you have all the Android files installed on your PC which I am sure you do. Also, you need to specify where the pac_tf201 build is located. This is what I did to push the version onto my TF201 in Recovery:
adb push c:/pac_tf201_4.3.Build-1_20131003.zip /sdcard/
I did the same with gapps but I made sure that both zip files (rom and gapps) were directly on my C drive and not anywhere else. Let me know if you need anymore help as I just barely did this a few days ago. Took me hours to get it but I have learned quite a bit from it. :good:
Edit: Make sure your directory is pointed to your sdk platform-tools folder as well in CMD.

This is what I'm curious about too. If there were photos on this SD card before you put it in the device, they will remain intact after a security wipe.
This is unclear to me based on the OP: You got the Bold as a graduation gift and would like to start using it i assume. (I also got this bold a couple days ago after my HTC One S died, bringing me to Blackberry after years of faithful service on Android. The 9900 is a great phone)
When you tried to use the phone, you were prompted to input your BBID credentials, which subsequently failed repeatedly. The phone has since been security wiped due to too many failed attempts. Upon opening the phone, the microSD that you had in there is gone.
Hello everyone,
I've managed to make a build that boots with the latest versions of ubuntu touch and I wanted to share it with you because I've also been following this thread eager to install ubuntu touch on my phone, although the method to install still might be complicated for some at the moment.
So first off you need to be using Linux, as I don't think project rootstock works on Windows
To install it you must follow the instructions I found here which are, in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install android-tools-fsutils qemu-user-static bzr
android-tools-adb
bzr branch lproject-rootstock-ng
cd project-rootstock-ng
Click to collapse
then to get the rootfs with the mir fixes
./rootstock-touch -p pps:rsalveti/ppa
Click to collapse
which takes a little while or you can download the tar.gz from here
but once the screen turns off it takes a while or a reboot to get it back on
Once that part is finished download all the files at the end of the post and put them in the project-roostock-ng directory to make things easier
then in the same terminal with your device connected to bootloader:
sudo fastboot flash boot ./boot.img
sudo fastboot flash recovery ./recovery.img
Click to collapse
Reboot your device to recovery and do a full wipe, once that's done, with your device still connected to usb, in the same terminal type:
./rootsotck-touch-installer ./out-XXXXXXXX/ubuntu-touch.rootfs-armhf.tar.gz ./system.img
Click to collapse
your device should reboot on its own, once you get to the black screen type:
adb shell
mount /dev/loop0 -o remount,rw
exit
adb push 70-m7ul.rules /usr/lib/lxc-android-config
adb push m7ul.conf /etc/ubuntu-touch-session.d
adb reboot
Click to collapse
and your device should load the ubuntu lockscreen
Here are the files for m7ul:
system.img
boot.img
recovery.img
70-m7ul.rules
m7ul.conf
for m7spr (not tested):
boot.img
recovery.img
system.img
and download the 70-m7ul.rules and m7ul.conf but replace m7ul with m7spr
What works:
UI
camera
auto-rotation
Wifi (tested only on at&t version)
Audio (I've managed to get audio to work if the headphones are plugged in but not all the way, you really gotta find the sweet spot so it's not really useable yet but it's still progress.)
What doesn't work:
GSM
etc
it should run more smooth and the phone should get less hot
Backup file - http://www.mediafire.com/download/2xnfez828442k3l/2014-06-17--17-26-37.zip
I also found a way to have the same kind of dual boot setup canonical made for the nexus 4 by flashing the boot.img (the newer one can be found here http://www.mediafire.com/download/i9kmmwvc3gmb0kb/boot.img) on the recovery partition and keeping the internal rom's boot on the boot partition, so in theory if you flash a rom without wiping after flashing the backup and you flash the boot.img I provided on the recovery partition it should also work and then to get ubuntu you reboot in recovery and to get android you just boot normally, the problem is you lose your recovery temporarily and you have to reflash it if you want to use it until canonical finds a different way or I manage to get it to work with multirom.

i have at&t too and it works pretty well for me. I was playing with some settings and suddenly wifi networks popped up and got connected. I then tested if the internet is working by using both facebook and browser. It is working pretty fine for me. Will post screenshots if needed

backup should be something like this.
/TWRP/BACKUPS/HT34CW900897/2014-06-12--03-27-15.
what I mean by this is that the backup folder should be in sub folder of backups not in backups itself. I already had a backup of my android rom and now I pasted your backup folder in HT34CW900897 folder not in BACKUPS

finally it worked. now getting gsm and audio working would be a great achievement. I am learning things now and if I am of anyway useful to this project I would gladly contribute.

Need misc partition. Using a terrible emergency phone atm that makes me crazy. Story below.
A.N.Droid said:
hi guys! this time i need help.
I have a nasty brick which is not fixable by the qfil unbrick method.
this happened to me while i tried to reproduce a condition where the screen wont turn on but the phone is accessible via adb/fastboot.
i found out that a black screen doesn't necessarily indicate a dead/broken screen. well, i found out the hard way.
i'm unable to recover, screen stays black with no fastboot and having hard times to get it into adb mode.
there is a chance that rewriting "misc" partition could solve the problem so here is my request:
please do me a favor, pull that partition and upload it here. afaik there is no critical or unique data on it.
you can pull the partition in adb mode, commands listed below.
adb shell
dd if=/dev/block/platform/soc/624000.ufshc/by-name/misc of=/sdcard/misc.img
exit
this will save the file misc.img to the root of your internal storage.
optional:
if your using linux
adb pull /sdcard/misc.img <lo
cal path>/misc.img
if your using windows
adb pull /sdcard/misc.img
<local path>\misc.img
this will pull the file to your pc, just enter the path where you want to store it.
my phone enters adb mode from time to time automatically. can take minutes or hours...
edit: entered adb mode as i were typing. *fingers crossed*

I can do it, but it's the misc partition the same for every ROM? Because now I'm on custom ROM.
I tried that
adb shell
dd if=/dev/block/platform/soc/624000.ufshc/by-name/misc of=/sdcard/misc.img
exit
but it say : Permission denied
you need su permission for shure, i am not an expert in adb, but i guess here are some. You can try to google you problem for other devices /its just different images and partititions commands are the same... good luck!

It's not rom dependant.
Misc will never be touched by any rom. No matter if it's stock rom, custom rom in zip or fastboot format or qfil unbrick rom.
If it was, i had just pulled it from one of theese sources.

I see...
Best is to do it from twrp. You are always root in adb while in twrp.
From running os, either "adb root" (not inside adb shell) and/or entering "su" while in adb shell might work.
Well, i already managed to unbrick the phone but broke the screen. Seems i was wrong about the misc partition.
However, since i blanked that partition today it would be nice if you could upload it anyway. Not sure if it is needed. I will have to wait a few weeks until my new screen arrives.
Almost happy again...

Hello A.N.Droid,
there you go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8s8en6x8cvlwc40/misc.img?dl=0
Got it from my Le Max 2 X820 6GB / 64GB with AOKP rom, hope it helps, seems a bit small to me?

thank you so much!
1MB is right.
I examined with an hex editor, it´s blank, same as mine.
so obviously this file is not essential for this phone. i read it is for other phones (they say it stores hardware config).
not sure why it´s even there if blank, maybe something is written here on runtime? i don´t know....
thanks to everyone who partitcipated, xda is a great community :good:
