I flashed a rom that didn't take so I used twrp to factory reset witch I think wiped ss. I then rebooted my phone but ss never loads and neither does the rom. I had a feeling I was going to have to use odin, doing some reserch now, never had to use it before. can I just flash a custom rom using odin then reinstall ss? Thank you for your help.

You know, Ive been following the thread about HD12 for the last couple days and it looks really sweet
but I didnt want to update to MJ7. I guess I might as well know. Thanks for the info
I was trying to flash an updated version of the ROM i had, but a verizon message came up, essentially telling me my bootloader was still locked. I looked it up, and the fix is supposedly flashing it back to stock, which I tried, but it has no internet connection (wifi or service) and it loaded the ROM i had been trying to install earlier.
I double checked my model number, to see if that did anything, and it's changed from what it was when I flashed the first ROM, so i tried flashing the firmware for that model, but Odin just gives me a fail message for that, so i can get my ROM to run, but my internet is borked, and I can't get it back to stock to see if that fixes it.
Because I can't get internet access it's screwing up a lot of my attempts to fix it, and my computer refuses to read it, so I can't do anything from that end.
Also, while my WiFi refuses to turn on (switch pops back to grey after trying to turn it on) my service bars act like they're receiving, changing up and down, but they're greyed out and the carrier name is 'Empty'.

Original Build: if you mean what I was using before flash, I can't find the link to it, it was one of the first stock android ROMs for the GS4. If you mean prior to that, it was the standard Samsung TouchWiz the GS4 comes with.
I was trying to flash the ROM found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2340783
I flashed it using TWRP > wipe data/cache, factory reset > install zip > wipe dalvik cache > boot. When that didn't seem to work, I tried flashing stock using Odin, as I can't get the zips onto my phone now.

I mean the last official build the phone was on before you started flashing. (MDK, ME7, MI1, MJ7 or MK2)
Did you ever take any OTA's?
When you say TWRP, do you mean TWRP with Safestrap or just TWRP?

Erm, I believe it was MDK, but I'm not certain, and I wouldn't know how to go about checking that retroactively if I could.

I don't know what you want exactly, the name of the file I tried to use to flash back to stock is 'SCH-I545_MD2_423399_Kernel.tar', I can't link because xda says I can't link outside sources until 10 posts, and I'm a tad new.

It has a very nice set of instructions that the first one I linked you to doesn't.
That links you to the no wipe MDK tar file. You should be OK to use that one.
Very important that you use the MDK file and not one of the others as those will lock your phone back up and no more custom recovery for you.

If you run into problems with the no wipe tar files in the second link go and download the mdk tar file from

And try that.

I got my phone back to stock, made sure my internet was working, rooted it, installed TWRP, and everything worked fine, but I have a question that might be a bit out of the bounds of this post. When I tried to use TWRP to flash stock android onto it I get the message "Verizon has detected unauthorized software [etc]". This is linked to the bootloader, if I recall correctly, but I can't find some really good help with it.
Further help would appreciated, but what you've done already has helped me far more than I had hoped when I posted, so thank you, oh so much.

I didnt realize i needed odexed instead. now i am stuck on the sprint screen upon reboot. i tried using odin to reflash that rom again as well as a Cf auto root. both flashed but still stuck on the same screen upon reboot. I then tried to wipe and clear all data and cashe as well as factory reset from recovery mode. still the same issue. ANY help will be appreciated.
NOTE: i looked for 3 days for help on XDA as well as other sites and can not find anything specific to my case, or anything that will work. Please if you offer help include links as i have searched for everything i could think of.

First, let's diagnose what's wrong, to see what you need to do to fix it.
Flashing a DeOdex Mod onto an Odex ROM.
This will mess up your system files. What you'll most-likely get is a bootloop (or stuck at startup, which is where you're at). When this happens, you should be able to still access Recovery and Download Modes. This is good news! This means you have many options to fix your phone.
Possible solutions for your problem.
Restore a backup in Recovery.
The first rule when flashing ROMs/Mods is that you read and understand the thread first.
A close second rule is to make a backup before flashing anything.
I doubt that you have a backup, since that would've been the first thing you would've tried. That's ok, we just have to do a little more work to get your phone fixed.
Reflash the custom ROM in Recovery
This doesn't apply to you too much, because you weren't running a custom ROM, just a rooted stock ROM, but I think it's good for others who might have a similar problem. If you had a bootloop issue, you can always re-flash the ROM in recovery. I'd just recommend wiping data, cache, dalvik cache, and system prior to flashing the ROM.
Reflash the Stock ROM in ODIN.
This is the last-case scenario. I'd go to this thread that micmars wrote and follow his instructions very carefully. Doing this should get your phone back to stock. Then I'd re-do the rooting like you did originally (make sure you're using the kit-kat instructions.
Once you get your phone back and running (and rooted), the first thing I'd recommend is to create a nandroid backup in recovery. This will be your life-saver whenever something gets messed up.
Hope this helps!
EDIT:
I figured that I should give you a reason why the CFAutoRoot didn't work for you:
CF Auto Root only modifies certain files. It's not flashing an entire rooted ROM onto your phone, it's just selectively modifying/replacing files so that you have root access. So, when the system is messed up due to flashing a incompatible Mod, CF Auto Root is not likely to fix those issues. Only flashing a stock Rom, like DarkManX4lf suggested.

Yeah. On a full stock Odin flash, things need a little longer to initialize and set up at the first boot. Even after you boot up completely, it takes awhile for everything to finish and settle down.

Save your data, then try doing a Factory Reset, see if takes you back to official. If your KNOX is 0x1, then you can flash a fresh copy of 4.4.2 through a recovery like twrp or cwm. If you where rooted, Towel Root and others will not root 4.4.4 yet.

Cheryl, I had the same problem when trying to go back to stock 4.4.2 from being rooted. Sometimes it doesn't stick the first couple of times, I don't know why. First, get a fresh copy of 4.4.2 NC5, here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712205 this is a complete copy OS/bootloader/baseband. Just follow the instructions on the thread. Here is a link for Samsung drivers, and Odin v 1.85 http://www.downloadodin.info/download-odin-1-85 I think Odin v 1.85 works best.

You download odin than downliad twrp than run odin and check ap and select the twrp you downloaded. Put your phone in download mode and start odin. One thing you need to watch out for is after the process finishes the phone reboots and you need to have it go immediately into recovery instead of booting up.. if you need more info you will need to do some reading there are plenty of how toos and i can't type this much on my phone
Please dont take this a stupid question imjust such a noob...
Well i installed cm11 on my s3 and it is now successfully running on 4.4.4 BUT for some strange reason i have the urge to go back to stock (Yes I know theres a whole thread about it and all but it seems a bit too long for me to do and also dont know how to relock bootloader?..)
Well anyways i came across this stock 4.3 Firmware file that can apparently be flashed through CWM so all i need to know is if i can flash it without a brick (considering right now im on 4.4.4/Potentially Unlocked bootloader) i dont want to go back to complete stock just the OS needs to be.
It also apparently comes with a modem?...
(My baseband is the same as the thread says)

Please post a link to the rom you would like to flash so i can help verify for you
The international vesion of the s3 does not come with a locked bootloader, you either have a different s3 model or read some wrong info.
As MrKhola said please lay out all spec/info with what you plan to do.
If you do indeed have the i9300 this is the thread you need.

Don't be afraid, what would you like help with or explained?
If flashing a 4.3 'stock' ROM (through CWM as this file is made for it) will brick my phone if I'm running CM11 4.4.4.
It also comes with a modem kernel etc.
Its best to do it on odin, follow from step number 3-wipe device in the link i provided you. Read and understand a couple of times to make sure you understand them and you will be alright, going to stock is easy and alot less hassles than going to the other way.
Although the CWM way seems easier to me I'll try your way soon.
Is it wipe data/factory reset in cwm?

Yes, Remember to back up first
Edit: Did some research for another user and it seems you can flash stock files through recovery so I believe you can try it this way first.
After much deliberation decided to go with my first method and its worked!
For anyone wondering:
1) Download the file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/dump-stock-i9300xxugmk6-t2563562
2) Install latest Philz recovery as for some reason normal CWM doesn't install properly
3) Wipe Data , Wipe Cache , then format /system
4) Install ZIP and your done!
