[Q] Still a couple questions about Themer app - Themer General Discussion

Well!
Its been like 6 months I last used Themer app, I loved it. I seriously did. But trouble with me is, I don't have internet connection over wifi provision rather a strongly proxified secure local network at my workplace (Military institute). So,
Question No. 1:
Does this app still require internet connectivity on every reboot and if not, comes up with empty white screen instead of downloaded/applied theme?
Question No. 2:
Connected to Question 1, Is there a way to keep themes offline?
I searched the forum before posting these questions and haven't found em yet. IF THEY EXIST, please kindly point me in the right direction than coming up with another "Use search button".
You'll have my heartily thanks.

Hi,
For Question 1: Themer requires internet connectivity for:
Connecting 'Logging In' for the first time
Downloading official themes
Downloading official themes
Updating weather and RSS feeds on certain themes
Displaying unread email notifications
Once you have a theme applied, you can reboot your phone without internet. If you are experiencing problems, try downloading another theme and let us know if the problem persists. We'd also need to know your phone type/Android version/ROM status.
For Question 2: Yes and no.
Themes can be saved/exported in the form of a .zip file. So if you download one of these .zip files and place them into /sdcard/MyColorScreen/Themer/Exported/zip, you can simply apply this theme from the Exported section in the My Themes in the Themer main menu. This also applies if you've downloaded a theme, made changes (or not), then saved/exported this theme (via the Advanced menu - Export Theme). What you can't do is reapply a theme you've already downloaded (by hitting Apply when selecting a theme). For this we recommend saving the theme as mentioned earlier.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for a quick, on the fly reply. I am using LG Optimus G (Intl.) with Cyanogenmod 10.2.
I'll definitely give it a try once I reach home and test the offline feature to my relief.

***WELCOME***
Welcome everyone who has a question, but just can't seem to find an answer. My hope is that this thread will reduced the extremely large number of new threads being created for every little issue each user is having. The rules are very simple. Please follow them, as it's just not that hard.
1) Absolutely NO FLAMING. I am completely inflexible on this rule. If i catch you do it, you will get an xda vacation (will be banned, in case you don't get it). Also, just to be clear, "use the search function" is not an acceptable answer in this thread.
2) Before you post you MUST read THIS. Trust me, I will know if you didn't.
3) Anyone can post any issue they're having with their HTC Espresso: myTouch 3G Slide in this thread, but you MUST include a detailed description of your issue. If after a couple days your issue has not been addressed, please feel free to bump it.
4) Remember you are asking for help, and as the saying goes "it's easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar. So be nice to those who are helping you.
5) Please quote the person you are replying to, it will make it MUCH easier for people to sort through the many messages that will end up in here.
6) If you find your Question answered, find your original Post and change the font colour of the text into dark green. And at the bottom of the question post either provide a link to the answer or Quote the answer,
This way it can be easier for any moderator to delete Clutter so the thread can be easily searched and read by other users.
This is an experiment based on a suggestion by other users, so we will see how it goes. If all goes well then i hope that this thread will be a great help to many new members. If not then we will make adjustments. I want to thank all those who will be contributing to this forum for their time in advance.
Note: If you feel your thread has been moved here in error, please PM me and politely ask me to move the related posts back into the original thread. Sometimes the wrong threads get moved here by accident. Please also provide a clear explanation of why you think this topic deserves it's own thread. Angry tirades and rants will be of no use, and will more likely than not simply get you a warning or a ban.
Also if you dont have something important to say and your just going to complain then dont post.
great thoughts, also congrats on mod status sir

people are postcounting up... nothing happened yet today, so until something does, it may as well be locked to stop people just upping postcount

I agree it has gone off topic a little bit, But when nothing new is happening and people just want to add there 2cents then that happens. I will keep an eye on it though. I know the 3 Devs working on getting Root are working there butts off to do it and I have faith we will see it.
The good thing is, it seems rooting is not a matter of "if", just "when", which I never have a problem with.
i just hope that the "when" is "sooner" rather than "later" because im getting "pissed" about this "bloatware" >.<
Wifi Tether, apps to sd, froyo 2.2?
So now that root has happened I know a lot of us are interested in added functionality of our devices. So far mine is stock but with live wallpapers and some free'd up memory. However, I'd like to use wifi tether, apps to sd, and preferably get froyo 2.2 on here. My question is do we have a lot of devs working toward this now or is it too soon after root? I don't mean to seem impatient here and I understand there is still a lot of focus on getting everyone to the point of root since it was difficult for most of us. Anyway, any status update or something would be nice.
Answered quickly: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6845610&postcount=11
Thank you!
Personally i know of 5 or 6 devs working on projects for the slide... If I remember correctly, another couple are going to start on it very soon also
Not sure if this is a dumb question... When the G1 was rooter, shortly after other methods of rooting were found. I fear some of us will endlessly have the problem of getting ADB to recognize the device in recovery. What are the chances of another root method coming available for the Slide?
if an update comes out, there will be more methods im sure... just not sure on a timeline for them

Fermunky, I've been following your problem because I was having it too. What finally got it for me was, I formated a different sd card, put it in the phone, removed all software ( htc sync, pdanet) and removed all drivers I could find using usbdeview. Then rebooted with phone unplugged, installed pdanet following all their instructions, then the loop worked perfect. Good luck
Tl;dr version, i tried it all at the same time and it worked
Widgets
hey, is it possible for someone to make some of the htc widgets compatible with adw launcher? I have the slidemeroot rom with live wallpapers and like it a lot. However, I miss the variety of widgets such as multiple calendar views now that I have to run adw launcher to get the live wallpapers. I'm looking for a way to get the best of both worlds and have live wallpapers along with the sense widgets. Is it possible? or better yet, get live wallpapers on stock rom without adw launcher so it works with my modes as well (cuz I miss that too). Maybe I just need to give up on the live wallpapers
can we have links to these listed roms?
Can't get superUser on legend to slide
I have been working/searching on the issue for a while and just cant figure it out.
every file is called superuser.apk and I am pretty sure they are all ROM/device specific. I can't get them to install.
Could someone help me with the following:
1. The source for the correct superuser.apk for legendTOslide Please
2. Do I adb push? In recovery? In device mode? sample command?
Thank you

You can get Live Wallpapers to work in ADW Launcher, but the HTC Widgets are bound to Sense UI.

No you cannot.

Anyone tried the new Android 4.0.1 ROM for S2?

I've read the info at SamMobile (related to SamFirmware).
Anyone tried the ROM? From the comments, there are still plenty of bugs...
Edit: Whoever rated this thread 1star is a true moron and a real idiot.
This is a developer site where people do use beta versions.

There are several threads around here already concerning people using this ROM, so yes, people have used it. General consensus is that it's too unstable for daily use.
I'd be tempted to 1-star this thread as well due to lack of searching on your part.

Well I'll be nice and respond to you.
I've played around with the XXKP1 ROM and for the most part, it was surprisingly stable.
The default launcher IS quite temperamental, so I installed the Trebuchet launcher and 90% of the FC's disappeared. This launcher is a MUST on these leaked ROMs for the time being.
In order to get the best possible experience with these leaked ROMs you need to:
* Install the Bezke XXKP1/2 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393569) - Flashable through CWM and is pre-rooted and also has the RIL fixes for 3G data
* Change the default keyboard to the standard Android one as soon as you can one to stop the keyboard FC's.
* Install the Trebuchet launcher (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=821149&d=1324230099) - and place it in /system/app folder. It should open when you press the home button. Set it as the default launcher.
* Stop the media scanner from running - it's a BIG battery drainer - go to Settings/Applications/Running and stop it there, and also stop the cached process
* Turn off key press sounds and lock screen sounds - having these on causes a continuous partial partial wave lock called 'AudioOut_1' - battery drainer
* Install these Calendar apks (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19448865&postcount=2) in /system/app to get the calendar working. Once in /system/app, click on them both to install them. The Calendar will now work
* If you want to use the Contacts.apk and Phone.apk from the 'vanilla' ICS ROM (instead of the installed TW ones) download those APK's (http://www.multiupload.com/6T0019180O) and put them in /system/app. Don't install the MMS.apk though it will break things!
* Turn off the red border from appearing on some screens by going to the Dev Tools App > Development settings > strictmode visual indicator > put it in OFF MODE - then reboot for this to take effect
Battery life then falls to normal levels. Be aware though that when you connect your phone to your computer to transfer files etc, that a media scan will be run again when you disconnect. You'll have to force stop the media scan again otherwise it will keep running.
What rom? That's been kept quiet hasn't it? Certainly no info or discussions anywhere on these forums about it
Everyone will 1-star this because you didn't bother to search before starting a new thread on the same topic!

Are you for real? I've been a forum member on many sites (not to mention developing vBulletin forum software) since forever, I know how to search. Not to mention that the SamMobile post was made today...
Edit: My bad, I apologize. Just found the thread now... it was not on the first page of results when I initially searched and I never look further than a page (like anyone else I guess). Still, rating a thread 1star is really a baby game. Why not just post the link instead? This is a discussion forum where people communicate, not a Nazi camp where the Moron Patrol votes 1's on everything they think is stupid.
Searching, always searching...
The search here can be finicky, but a google search on site:forums.xda-developers.com is generally good, and fairly up date as well.

Q&A FAQ
kuzibri said:
FAQ
Q Why a special Q&T Thread for a specific ROM??
A The bigger a ROM development thread gets, the greater the chance that posts are being placed in this thread that are not related to the ROM development itself, e.g. problems with flashing, installation, bugs, things not working etc. However this is understandable, it's not according to the guidelines of XDA for Development sections. Therefore the main goals of the ROM specific Q&T threads is to avoid this cluttering of the original develpment thread with these OT posts by redirecting the posters to the ROM specific Q&T thread and also to relieve the developer from answering these post, so he can dedicate his time to developing.
Q How to move my post to the Q&A/T thread?
A Copy the text of your post in the dev's thread, got to the Q&A/T thread and paste it there. After having done that, go back to the dev's thread, edit your post and change the text into: moved to Q&A/T thread, preferably accompanied with a link to this thread.
Q When I'm asked to move my post to the Q#A/T thread, do I have to do that?
A When you're asked to move your post, there will always be given an explanation by the OP of the Q&A/T, e.g. your post is not development related (f.i. SD card problems, etc), so please be so kind to move your post. If you want to help the dev to keep his original thread as clean as possible from OT posts, then the answer is, of course, YES. Although we cannot force you to move your post, it's highly recommended to do so
Q Where can I download this ROM and How do I install?
A You can find the link to download and installation instructions HERE. Pay close attention to this post, everything required for a successful flash is listed right here. If you fail to follow the instructions or meet the requirements for installation, you could run into some problems.
Q What are the known issues with these ROM's?
A See THE Developer's thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520978
Q How’s battery life?
A I see this question asked repeatedly across all ROMS. Honestly there is no way to give you an answer based on a ROM. There are too many variables in question and results vary from user to user and device to device. Battery life is going to depend on age and condition of your battery, your use habits with your device, installed apps, tweaks, settings, etc...
Q How do I...
A Ask your questions and report your issues in this thread. You will receive a response and hopefully get you back up and running this ROM to it's fullest

Q&A
kuzibri said:
"Hi dear followers of this ROM,
in this post I will explain the goal of this specific thread created for this ROM with the permission of the Developer of this specific ROM.
This is a statement made in the Q&A/T template thread:
"While our forum has slowly been morphing, the one area we would like to keep original is Development
The goal is to alleviate the OT banter that occurs within any rom. While the XDA forum continues to grow, we need to help users work within the guidelines created by XDA. Over the last couple of years the average rom being created, has become a free for all chat thread. There tends to be much infighting and mod/developer cleaning.
The idea of this template is to create a Questions and Answers for each rom. This is in no way asking for Development to be moved here, rather any and all conversation that is non Development related to your conjoined Q&A."
This means that non-development related posts, should be posted - with the permission of the Dev - in this thread. What are the most common Off Topic posts, that should be posted in this Q&A/T thread?
1. Battery life related posts
2. Will this app work with this ROM
3. SD Card related problems
4. How do I dowmload and install this ROM, etc, etc
Hope to have given you enough information,
kindest regards, Kuzibri

My Bug List
I am posting my bug list in order to help with the ongoing development of PAC ROM 4.3.1 for the HTC Amaze 4G. :fingers-crossed:
I am having issues with WIFI, as it will not recognize my home network. I must mention that the network is hidden, and I must add it manually to the phone. In addition, while using mobile data, I am unable to attain 4G, as 3G is as far as I can get. Also, USB Debug mode is laggy, and battery drains at a ridiculous speed. I have placed my specs below.

Replace build.prop from this system.zip attached to pac_ruby_4.3.Build-1_20131211-204642.zip > system
reboot into recovery, wipe cache data/factory reset(or format all partitions except sd card in 4ext), flash the ROM again and gapps, wipe cache again, reboot your phone
this should fix the data acquisition(it did for evervolv 4.3 ruby), I tested myself for EDGE, can't test for 3G or 4G not available in my area
I removed
Code:

according to evervolv 4.3 ruby

http://review.evervolv.com/#/c/9374/1/system.prop
this wouldn't be possible without evervolv team and jeepers007 all credit goes to him fixed in latest build thanks to jose, no need to replace anymore
Also settings > Wifi > menu button > Advanced > unchecking all options here(network notification, scanning always available, avoid poor connections, Wifi optimization) should fix Wifi connecting to your home network.
USB debugging has been laggy for me too and battery drains in debugging mode because it's using more power than what it gets... try to refrain charging with usb, use original charger should fix the battery drain if your getting any...

some info
i have bluetooth a2dp working properly with my computer (win7) using the following program http://www.filedropper.com/btw6209700
and the "car music connector" app from play store.
i know its a common problem for us to use full features and test bluetooth connection with our computers.
i found the link above and it gave my computer full bluetooth capabilities even with my generic USB BT dongle
A couple bugs to report here too
Big thanks for this ROM. I just installed yesterday after getting my Amaze back as my daily phone, so not fully tested, but also pretty much out of the box settings.
Having a couple odd glitches...my stats are below.
T-Mobile US
Unlocked Bootloader
Recovery: 4EXT
ROM: pac_ruby_4.3.1 JLS36I
SuperSU
GAPPS: pa_gapps-full-4.3-20131102-signed

Battery drain is pretty rough, but I'll give it a few days to even out & get my settings in place to minimize.
About half the time I turn phone on & unlock it to the home screen, all my icons are gone....If I go to apptray and then back to home screen they redraw. ... Any idea how/why? THIS is more and more annoying as I use.
My big issue at the moment is that the email app won't open emails...they're they, but when I try to pick one to read it, 100% of the time it crashes. I've tried the force stop / clear cache, etc. to no avail. THOUGHTS? SHould I try booting into recovery, wipe cache & reinstall GAPPS?
EDIT: This has fixed itself with me playing with some settings!
One other odd "bug" I can't seem to fix is the weather app on the homescreen won't display in F ... always in Celcius. Luckily I can do the math pretty quick in head, so not a huge issue, just an annoyance.
I've not messed with tethering or bluetooth yet.
Don't seem to have any data delays & don't have any problems with WiFi either.
Looks good all around. If I can fix the email app issue, I could live with the odd glitch with homescreen icons.
@tbonezx11
1. Battery drain is pretty much normal, you've just installed the ROM, it will take few days to settle up.
2. This is an issue with Trebuchet launcher, I'm trying to find a solution myself, only workaround at the moment is to use another launcher.
3. I have no crashes with Gmail or Y! Mail app, EDIT; didn't see you got it fixed.
4. This is not a bug, Drag and Remove the clock and weather widget. Go to menu > widgets search for cLock and drag it back to home screen, cLock settings will open up select Weather panel and uncheck use Metric and touch right sign up 2x Done, now it will show up as Fahrenheit. Hope you enjoy the ROM thanks to Jose.

the only issue is the bad battery drain, even after charging the phone with the plug charger it eats up battery like crazy. any other solutions to this?

That is a clever and relevant question. Ask it at google.com.
just bought the htc amaze 4g used off of ebay. took me a while to understand why standard troubleshooting wasn't applicable to my phone before i realized it came preloaded with this custom rom. now that i get it, i'm really liking the usability and interface, but i am noticing a few things that may or may not be caused by it:
1. terrible battery life. i've seen this mentioned a lot on here - got the battery doctor app which seems to help a lot, and i hear this tends to be a problem for the amaze no matter which operating system is running.
2. the camera/video shutter buttons on the side do not function at all. they're supposed to launch the camera and take the picture, but they do nothing. bummed about this because they were part of what i liked about the phone.
3. can't connect to the mobile hotspot. have to troubleshoot this more extensively, though.
4. poor reception, not getting 4g speeds. they're part of my plan, are offered in my area, and are picked up by other phones in the same location and on the same network. t-mobile couldn't figure out why i wasn't getting them, so not sure if this is the fault of the phone?
otherwise pretty happy with it, so far! hopefully if any of these bugs are the fault of the rom, they can be fixed in the near future.

At this point in time none of the after-market ROMs newer than those based on the last HTC ICS builds are fully functional. All have some type of issues whether they be camera, WiFi tethering, or bluetooth related. Unfortunately, this severely limits your choices if you desire to utilize all of your handset's functions.
If this is what you're looking for, then check out the various ROMs which are based on the stock ICS w/ sense. There are several and all are reliable. Check out the Dev threads and the info in the Amaze Wiki page for more details. Good luck and welcome to the forums.

New Touch user comments and questions.

I just got my Meizu MX4 and find several things which irritate me, was wondering if I can make suggestions for updates somewhere? Here are a few examples:
How do I get temp in C, with Display Language US English?
NearBy took an entire day to finally figure out where I live, although location is turned on and I tried to show it where I am.
Still new, more to follow if this is the place.

Do want to change this in the wheather app? That one has a settings entry for that.

As far as I know there is a bug report for this and the developers are working on it. Let's see if the next update fixes the issue.
Thank you for the response Nikwen,
The weather app is automatically the Weather Channel, the only setting possible is location on or off. I had expected it to be there.
I'll keep my eye open for the fix to my other comment and also for additional things to talk about. I'm essentially very satisfied with the user experience and am certain that once apps and scopes begin showing up in numbers Ubuntu will be a viable alternative to the others on the market.
I assume I can continue to bring up problems I find here.
Thanks again
O
Found the next thing, although it's probably known. In camera I can't zoom. The zoom - + show, but nothing happens.
So, I found that I can change the weather app to celsius, but it doesn't work in the weather channel and it's what's used in NearBy with F.
I also found that the Amazon app goes automatically to Amazon.co.uk, but I live in Germany, I want .de, but how?
Next, I browsed Google.com, it sent me to Google.de, what else? I didn't want that, but it's impossible to get to complete English. The Google page is English, but when I touch settings, I land in a German page.
Those are my newest grumps, I'll keep looking.
TY for listening!

WiFi hotspot would also be nice, though I understand the OS is new and time will bring new features.

Wifi hotspot is coming in the next update
It should be out in September or maybe later this month if we're lucky !
TY antole, that's welcome info. This morning I got an update, since then I get no notifications from gmail. Is that normal or do I need to make a setting? Another thing, Near By has disappeared, so I no longer see F not certain if that's good or bad atm.
I'm just enjoying playing with my new toy and thank all devs for the hard work amnd for putting up with my problems.
O
I haven't even tried the Gmail app sorry
My Gmail account is configured with Dekko
I didn't get any update this morning, was the update for the Gmail app ?
I've been running on OTA-5 for approximately two weeks now and I've had no issue with The Weather Channel displaying temperature in C but I live in France so that seems normal
My NearBy scope hasn't gone anywhere either ;p

The update was for Nexus devices only as the messaging issue they fixed didn't appear on other devices.
Back with more! Sorry to say I was overwelmed by the amount of work needed on OT and didn't want to sound like I was putting it down, so I stopped writing. Most are small, wish I could this or that. I found one today though which I had to ask about.
I tried to upload files to my P today, win7 couldn't do it so I tried Ubuntu desktop, 14.04 which couldn't mount my phone. Uh oh, what now? I can't find a setting anywhere which helps. Any advice would be appreciated.
Oh and the update I assume was somethsomething to get my new phone up to the current version. I must have removed Near By by accident, I have it back now, still in F. Must be the language, custom I live in germany but us us english.
Ty for the help!
O
If you cannot mount your phone, you can always enable ssh and use sftp to transfer files. Usual mounting should work though.
(If it still doesn't, you could try installing ADB on your computer. It might help.)
Thanks for your help Nik,
I figured it out, I needed to get into Developer Mode in order to get USB to work. Now I'm in, but have the next problem. I can only see the Home directories, but I want to download the files in the .local/share but I have no idea how to get there. On my MX4 I've gotten to the folder I want using File Manager, but how do I get there from my PC? Or more specifically, how do I download the files stored there?
O
Yeah, hotspot is here! Haven't had time to test it yet, but I love to watch UT develop.
Still hoping for a tip on getting to my files from a PC. I understand it's a kinda noobish question, but until now I've only fixed problems as they arrise in Ubuntu, haven't had time for it. Now I've started and don't know where to search for help.
And the potshot works great. Saw Cantata Nil, looks interesting, but having a problem finding servers, or do I have to set up my own server?
Thanx
O
Stupid auto correct, I meant hotspot and Nik.
I've finally found AskUbuntu, so I'm working on finding my own answers.

Cannot get past WIFI selection on Hudl 1

Hi guys, I hope someone can help coz I'm at the end of my tether!.
I've got a Hudl v1 which I factory reset because it was getting slow with stock ROM (never changed anything).
I come to the Let's get started and I click Start to get to the WIFI selection bit. I connect to my own router and it quickly says Authenticating (which it does), then it say Cannot connect to the internet, check your WIFI, and I click OK which takes me back to the WIFI connection screen. If I reboot at this point and start again, at the connect to WIFI point it says connected and there's the WIFI icon but no triangle icon to continue.
I've tried it on several networks, both open and secured and set it static IP but no luck.
If I use the Google keyboard method of getting to Settings I can browse Ok using Chrome and access Play Store etc and install apps.
I have tried 3 different ROM's now and all are the same. Used RKTOOL to flash it. Factory reset after installing each of them.
Debug mode and rooted now BTW.
I used ES explorer to browse to system/apps folder and renamed the HUDL SETUP apk to something different then reset again. The only difference now is that I have the 3 nav icons at the bottom.
Is there a way around this to skip the WIFI screen and continue to the next setup screen?
Is there a way of killing this process (if so what's it called?) of removing it?
Much appreciate any help.
Cheers
Paul
Factory reset HUDL - cannot get past the wifi screen
Paull,
I am having exactly the same issue my HUDL. I have not been through as many processes as you to get around the startup screen. My main theory now is to wipe the HUDL software and install alternative Android OS. Not sure if that would work in practice, but seems just the HUDL thats the issue.. Is it possible this is a deliberate bug by HUDL to kick the systems gradually off the market? Seems a waste as my HUDL still works well, so be stupid to bin it just yet.
Can you add any advice on how you did the other actions - how did you get your three buttons and did they operate as expected - presuymably not:? Even when I by pass to the keyboard section I am unable to download or update apps or install the Google Now Launcher.
Seems stupid to me. Really keen to find a post a fix for this stupid stupid issue?

I called TESCO contact centre and they confirmed that the software is no longer support and this sounds like a deliberate bug to stop the devices. - If you have a HUDL I would urge you not to factory reset as this will kill it altogether. I think from an environmental standpoint its atrocious to do this and for TESCO not to have a section about it on the website. They should also be telling people where they can send the devices for recycling or repurposing or offering a very basic OS so it can still be used even with limited fucnctionality. We need to start thinking about the whole picture and getting the information like this out there in the public domain.

Tesco HUDL1_Post-factory reset Workround
Hi All,
Over the past couple of years I've contributed to the MoDaCo forum on this topic as a HUDL user - since the MoDaCo forum is now defunct (sadly, recently confirmed to me by PaulO'Brien via email), I thought it might be useful to fill in some of the gaps for you by summarising the extensive history surrounding this problem, starting from the first Tesco server outage in early 2019. Much of this was documented in MoDaCo but is now no longer available.
I can also offer you a couple of workround solutions which I’ve tested on a factory-reset HUDL1, and documented as a detailed instruction set within a .pdf file.
Since it isn’t possible to attach anything other than image files to this post. I’ve transferred the file to Google drive. Unfortunately as a new user, it does not appear to be possible for me to include the shareable link within this reply to allow you access…..
If any of you are interested in viewing this file, please let me know via this post and I will look into alternative means of getting it to you.

Hi,
Since I'm new to this forum and there do seem to be quite a few restrictions on exchange of data, I'll need some advice on how to give folks access to the pdf file. As you'll appreciate, the amount of info is too large to insert into a post 'longhand', so a separate document was really the only way to go with this.
I suspect there will be quite a bit of interest, and it would be a shame if the site's restrictions prevented me from sharing the info.
I notice there is an icon on the post compilation page entitled 'Insert email link' - what exactly does this do, and could we use it to exchange email addresses offline ? I've no objection to corresponding with interested individuals, but I'd rather not broadcast my address too widely....
Cheers, Viv

Hi, Happy to let you have a copy, but please see my reply to KingUsman re how best to do it. Not sure why the forums are so restrictive...
My sympathies on being landed with 2 'dead' HUDLs by Tesco - you certainly won't have been alone in this, given the popularity of this tablet and continued buoyancy of the second hand market before the event....

Sorry, folks - I've tried to unravel the complexities of exchanging information via this forum, but they do seem to me to be insuperable for a 'novice' user. I'll have to explore other ways of sharing the information....
In the meantime, best of luck finding ways to reactivate your HUDLs,

Thanks to both you and Viv for helping out with this. If you manage to get that available on dropbox I would be keen (and very grateful) for a copy.
The restrictions on this forum do seem quite onerous. My original attempt to post a reply was rejected because it quoted your post which contained a link!
Thanks
FIXED!
I just managed to get past the setup wizard and get both my Hudl 1's back into service. The problem is not that the Tesco server is gone, but that it's certificate expired on 26th June. If you can escape the wizard and get to settings to set the Hudl's time to before that date the wizard completes successfully.
I've written up how I escaped the wizard and got into the settings to do this - it's s combination of information from this thread and stuff I've found elsewhere, none of it is really mine . No rooting or USB debuuging required.
Find the write up here: Apparently I haven't posted enough here to be able to post the actual link, so try this ....
https colon slash slash rob dot themayfamily dot me dot uk slash hudl
If someone with enough privileges could post an actual link for others to click that would be excellent.
I hope this is useful. Please let me know if you find better/easier ways to achieve the same end effect. If I get time I'll have a look to see if the setup wizard can more easily be disabled, but for now this has got me where I need to be.
Enjoy,
Rob.

Sorry, but not sure what website you went to. If you go to my site there are step by step instructions for recovering - but I still don't have enough posts here to link to it directly. If you click on 'TigerRob' to the left of this post and then follow the link to 'view profile' and then click on the 'Contact Info' tab you will find a link under the 'Home Page' - follow that to my write-up.
I've had a couple of other people confirm that they've made it work - let me know how you get on.
I'm working on a custom ROM, based on the latest stock ROM (JDQ39.20140424.153851) that will have the following features:
- boot 'chime' disabled
- setup wizard & Tesco updates disabled
- Tesco apps and branding removed
- Remaining stock apps updated to latest available for JellyBean/4.2.2
I'm probably a week away from having something that can be tested - if you're interested in having early sight and helping test then please let me know by replying here or PM'ing me.
Rob.
Fixed as well!
Rob, thanks for what is probably the best described fix I've ever seen for a tech problem. It worked perfectly, just as you described at every step, including the lack of download of the settings app so I went back and reset the hudl again but was quicker through the process second time. Excellent job! Rob

I'll add an instruction not to go too far in the past . The Hudl talks to other sites during setup, and if they have certificates then those certificates will have 'not before' dates, and if you set the time before these dates then those communications will fail ...
TMF Custom ROM v0.1 (for HUdl 1)
I have a working custom ROM that is currently running on 3 of my Hudl's. If any with a bit of experience of flashing the Hudl want to give it a shot then drop me a PM and I'll share a link - but I'd like to get some confidence of it working on other devices before I open up to general downloads.
.
Rob.
This ROM is not Rooted. It just works around the issue of not being able to complete the setup wizard but disabling it and removes most of the Tesco branding. More information once I have confidence that it's good for wider distribution
