I don't know where you are from or where you'll use the phone but any GSM carrier will work.
So if your rooted and unlocked can you simply switch a Verizon sim card for a Verizon sim card? Like my wife's unlimited data razr sim in place of mine?

I'd say yes. When I got the note, I just pulled the sim from my rezound and put it in the note (had to cut it down to size first). No need to call Verizon for anything.
Yes I did that stock with no problems before I unlocked

Another yes here. Pull the sim out of my galaxy nexus into the note 2 and had no issue. Even updated my account on Verizon within about 5 minutes

This is cool. One thing I always liked on gsm carriers is the ability to swap phones whenever I wanted and as much as I wanted (work phone/play phone). What would really be cool is if could put my Verizon sim in my unlocked nexus 4.........
What if the Verizon note 2 had a bad esn? Would it still work I see a lot of deals on ebay for around 4 hundred!

Nope, once it has a bad enough it can't connect to the network anymore, those aren't worth 400.
Edit: I'm not sure if you can unlock it and put it on another network, but it won't work on Verizon.

You shouldn't need to flash to Straight Talk as the Verizon S4 already has an unlocked SIM slot and compatible radios with AT&T and T-Mobile (re-farmed markets) 3G. All you need to do is order a SIM card from them and then enter the APN information for Straight Talk and set the phone for GSM mode. The AT&T SIM card is probably a better choice since some T-Mobile markets still only use AWS for 3G which the Verizon S4 does not support.
I'm contemplating switching to Straight Talk and naturally I want to keep my S4 versus getting one of their phones..is this possible to just buy the AT&T GSM sim from them and use it with my Verizon s4? Or am I doomed to a Straight Talk phone.

I use straight talk (using there at&t version) and it works perfectly. The only thing I heard was if using at&t it might bump you to 2g phone in the states, but I don't think that's true for S4 like in previous models. But I'm not 100% sure.

Did you ever get this to work? If so what steps need to be taken?
Any information would be appreciated.

Check out this thread. Looks like it can be done but it's time consuming:

Her a friend of mine is on Verizon and wants to buy an s4. Do we need to buy a Verizon version s4 out will any unlocked phone work

With CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon, you have to use their carrier specific phones. So in the case of your friend, they have to get a Verizon S4.
That's what I gathered and had already texted them. Thank you for verification.

Any cdma s4 will work on prepaid service such as page plus. Only a verizon model will work with verizon postpaid. If 4g/lte is not important but coverage is, go with page plus. It's a whole lot cheaper.
PM for flashing info if you decide to go that route.
