I'm on a new Galaxy S4. Model SCH-1545, baseband version VRUEMK2, on Verizon wireless. I have root access and I wanted to install this ROM, do I need to go through saferoot to do so or is my version able to use a custom recovery?
Also is there any downside to using saferoot? Will the OS run slower?
I know similar topics have been covered quite a bit here and I have read through many threads, so I apologize for rehashing a familiar topic - I just wanted specific advice if possible because I hard bricked my last phone when I thought I had it all figured out and I'd rather look like a dummy on here than brick another phone.
I greatly appreciate any help that anyone can offer.

Thanks, I've been reading through all of them and realized that that particular rom is not even safestrap compatible.
From everything I've read, my version of the gs4 is currently restricted to safestrap for custom ROMS - is that correct?

Ah, that was a typo. I meant to ask if ROMs would run slower when using safestrap. Thank you for your response though.
And I think I'm good with stock 4.3 for now. I just wanted a bare bones, GPE style, KitKat ROM but that does not appear to be possible on my device currently so I'll probably just wait until something like that pops up.

Thanks for the tip. I'm still trying to read up on all of the available ROMs to see if any jump out at me and Hyperdrive seems to be pretty cool, seems like a lot of people enjoy it and it has a good dev team too.

So recently I have been browsing through the forums of the other Galaxy S4 variants and have found some amazing looking roms. I was wondering if it would be possible to port them to our variant. The rom in particular that really caught my eye was the FoxHound rom. It looks amazing and who wouldn't want to see that rom on our Verizon variant. So if anyone knows how or an answer please share.
This has been covered in detail. No porting is needed- you just need to change the APN. You can use just about any rom you want so long as it's not for the i9500.

While it has indeed been covered, you are correct in that I omitted the requirement to change the kernel as well. For the sake of brevity, I oversimplified it. For reference, the op can check the handful of threads in the general forum on this very subject matter.

Data works? So maybe AT&T/TMo ROMs can be flashed, but not i9505s because I haven't been able to get data to work on any i9505 ROM.
Thanks for the input. I will definitely look into this further before I go ahead and try this.
So I can flash international 9505 rom that has move apps to external sd feature?
Your mileage may vary, but I haven't been able to get data to work and when I asked other people they never respond so I'm gonna guess they didn't either. The ROMs will flash perfectly fine though.
I flashed FoxHound for i9505 with a verizon custom kernel as suggested and it flashed fine, but had issues once booted.

Hello everyone I am using an ATT Note unlocked on T-Mobile. Is there a way to update it to the newer versions of Android?? It's on 2.3.6. I already rooted it and I am familiar with root and flashing so any help is appreciated.

Already rooted.....flash any ROM for an unofficial update. Any ROM is an update from GB. If your looking for an official update, you may have to return to stock. But there is so much more available with the newer Roms. 4.3 and 4.4 are kicking some bootie.

Go down the list......chances are if it is a custom, developer has gotten rid of bloat. They don't like it so they dump it.
Just read OP, get behind the wheel and take them for a test drive.
Do everyone a favor though, don't start a thread asking "which ROM is the best". No one can say what is going to run best for you.
Read OP for features and go with what interests you.
Hint: find ROM with your interest, then go to last page in thread and read backwards for most recent issues. If you don't feel like battling with that problem, move to next ROM.
Good luck, I hope I have helped.

I recommend going with any ROM 4.3 and above. Those offer the latest features and security updates with stability.
Hi All,
I'm a little new here but I've done a lot of searching and haven't been able to find anything recent on this topic. From what I can see there has been no progress unlocking the bootloader to flash custom Roms on the i545vruame7 s4 in a few months. I just got my S4 yesterday and when I received it, it already had i545vruame7 installed. I am able to gain root access but not unlock the bootloader to flash any custom roms. Have I missed something? Is there any way to flash back to the old version?
Thanks,
Peter

Welcome to the S4! So long as you are not on mj7 firmware you can still install Safestrap which allows you to run touchwiz based ROMs. Just search for it in development. If I'm not mistaken, it works with the Google Play Edition ROM too, so you can have a little bit of AOSP goodness.
Just to be curious, where did you get your phone from?

Thanks for the info! I've been thinking about getting involved in the development side, I develop android apps but have never touched anything as far as Roms and bootloaders. I just want it working so I can install CM on my phone so I figured it might be worth a shot.
I installed Safestrap and then stupidly tried to flash a rom slot with CM 10.1 which didn't work. Is there a list available anywhere of touchwiz based ROMs?

Makes sense, I used titanium to freeze the SDM app so I'm hoping that will stop it from auto updating, along with a whole bunch of other crapware.

I have a S4 for Verizon. I have been trying to root it so I can load the Google edition image on it. However, none of the tutorials I have seen seem to work on my device. I bought it brand new direct from Samsung off contract (didn't want to loose my unlimited data) so I don't think I can get a warranty replacement through Verizon (haven't rooted it yet). The furthest I seem to get is that SuperSU gets installed but will not download the binaries. So I cannot continue with the rest if the steps with rooting and re-imaging. Also, most steps have you install a specific kernal version as the first step but not sure if that is happening because my screen don't look the same as the ones in the tutorials.
Phone: SCH-1545
OS ver: 4.3
Kernal: 3.4.0
Build: JSS15J.1545VRUEMJ7
HW ver: 1545.06
Thanks.

Just so you know, the only thing available for MJ7 build is root. Installing a custom recovery or custom ROMs is not possible at this time.

No. Once the phone is updated, there is no way to go back.
As I stated above, all we can do is root. With root we can debloat and use Xposed framework to make some changes.

I know Verzon sucks in that regard but the service is awesome. I get full 4G coverage just about everywhere and I've got unlimited data still. Plus, I didn't buy it from them, I payed full price from an online vendor so that I wouldn't have to change my contract.
Oh well, guess I'll just have to keep an eye out for when someone finally cracks it.
I hate waiting....
I hope this question is not a stupid one...
I want to say that I tried searching and all guides come either outdated with broken links or just designed for a different model.
I have a Galaxy Note SGH-i717R which is a canadian version. I cannot find a current working rooting method that will guide me through installing a CWM or TWRP recovery plus let me flash CM or any other KitKat based ROM.
I have downloaded:
CWM-TOUCH-i717-6043.zip but I know I can't install it until I root. But all rooting guides are outdated and do not work.
I have a good idea on how to root and install custom roms, I've done it on various phones including on my Nexus 5 and 7.
Can anyone give me a link or a quick breakdown of what I need?
I can't stress enough that this is a SGH-i717R not SGH-i717, i have a Canadian Version.
Thanks in advance!
