Having an issue around the silent mode not vibrating for notifications (email or messaging) I'm using a nightly build.
Model - MB860
version - CM7-11092011
Vibrate is set to Always
Silent and vibrate are two different modes right?

Well I know silent and vibrate are different, but while silent means no sound (Duh) I have the sound mode set to switch between (sound+vibrate) and (vibrate) through the Notification power widget. To squash some of the future comments I've tested the issue through the widget or through settings options with the same results.

I use Power Control Plus widget to switch between "sound + vibrate" and "vibrate", it works well for me. I believe there is also a silent option but I don't have that enabled to toggle. Also Shush is a great way to automatically turn your ringer back on after a set amount of time.
when I put my SGS3 in vibration-mode than the ring tone is muted, new calls will only be notified by vibration. o.k. so long... BUT: incoming text-messages are further notified by the notification sound!!! can someone confirm this issue? if yes that must be a bug! - every phone I owned in the last 15 years (and I'd a lot different types from different manufacturers) switched all sounds (notification, ring-tone and so on...) off in vibration mode! annoying... cheers Gerald
up - can really nobody confirm this bug?

Sent myself a text message in vibrate mode and it didn't make any notification sound. Did you drop down the drawer and use that icon to put it in vibrate? That's what I did.
Hope that helps!

that's exactly what I did, too! and vibration mode does not mute the notification sound, only the ring tone!
I found the solution!!! this was an issue of the tool "Volume Manager Free". Obviously this tool does any changes in the config of the "audio streams", and since I configured the audio streams inside the volume manager free (so that the ring-stream does also mute the notifcation stream, alarm stream...) - there is such an option in the settings of volume managaer free to configure that - all works fine! when I now put the phone in vibration mode, I can see that notifications are also muted, volume manager shows "notification muted by rington audio stream".... cheers Gerald
This might seem like a silly question...
However:
On my S1, when I hit silent or vibration only, when an email arrives, the S1 doesn't make a noise (or vibrates) ie. the notification (like Haze) doesn't play.
yet on the S3, no matter what I do, be it on silent, vibration or what not, the sound STILL plays.
Am I becoming crazy or did samsung just overlook an important bug?
-Chris
Did you check all the volume levels?
(Hit the button on the right side when you turn up / down the volume),
I've noticed that (At least in TouchWiz), the media and notification volumes don't always get lowered when you put it on silent.
Also check "System Settings -> Sound" to see if there's anything that would indicate that it should play a sound while in silent mode.
Confirmed, put phone on silent. Started a video, there was sound.
This sucks.

Hit the settings button that pops on the screen on the right of the volume level shown when you press the volume buttons.. change your media and notification levels from there...

Okay, but if you put the phone on silent it should be SILENT

that's not the point of the button that you press for silent.
Or else what would be the point of the button, when i have to manually do it myself?
I'll log this and get back to you.
I don't know about you, but that seems normal, coming from ICS from SGS2 and iPhone, silent means alerts/notifications is off. But when you play Music or Youtube or Videos will play the sound, if you're actively trying to play media then it makes sense to play sound.
Android has always (except for a brief spell) had separate volumes for ringers, media and alarms

that is normal.
But when a SMS is received, on an s2, and you have it on SILENT what happens?
Does the notification sound still play?
As on the S1...and pretty much any phone dating back to the 3310, it remains SILENT
I've noticed this issue also. Silent mode doesn't mute the notification volume as it should. The temporary work around is to set volume manually, but it seems it is a bug in the Touchwiz UX framework.
I for one can't wait until I get either stock ICS or CM9 (maybe JB or CM10 soon if we're lucky, the source was recently released). These little issues are resolved very quickly in a community developed ROM (less than a week in most cases). There is usually a wait of months for OTA updates.
I just pray that AdamOutler can crack the verizon GS3 bootloader to allow easy customization. The International, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint users have unlocked/unsigned bootloaders.
Grab audio manager on google play
Then you set the mute profile for all the sounds you want (ringtone, notifications, player,...) and then you add the widget to your homescreen
When you want to mute, just "click" on the widget, got to the profile tab and then select your mute profile

I think it got fixed actually - magically or via OTA

What firmware would that be, out of curiosity? I'm running XXLFB based ROM and it's still not fixed, been driving me insane.
Not sure this helps if you've already got it fixed but I've been using RealSilent ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.geekherd.realsilent ) as recommended by Jerry over at AC. Pretty handy, but not sure how it works with the stock silent toggle in the notification pull down.
It does however work perfectly with CM9.

I'm on lfb, but on darkyrom v2.
I think lfb did it for me.

Isn't that app for the media volume, not notification?
I thought CM9 came with an option to link notification volume with ringer, so that notification on silent is no longer an issue purely because of that.
Maybe I will try a LG1 based ROM... can't believe Samsung overlooked something so basic.

After trying about 5 different apps including volume +, finally found a straightforward workaround, use the app called simple sound profile widget:
I can't post links yet since I'm under 10 posts, so search for it on Google play.
Really the issue is that Samsung unlinked notification and ringer, but left vibrate and silent toggle alone, so all it does is mute the ringer and not the notification. You'll notice on silent or vibrate, go to system volume and ringer volume still stays the same but shows a mute icon, while notifications volume does not. To fix this you need an app that, when toggling profiles, does not assume ringer and notifications are linked, and also TURNS DOWN VOLUME TO ZERO for both notification and ringer, as I don't believe mute for notifications is working. Simple sound does exactly that, the only thing missing is a true toggle widget since you have to click the widget then select a profile, but it fixed the notification issue properly so I'm not complaining.

Maybe your custom ROM fixed it, I'm on Omega 8.1 which is base on LFB, issue is still there.
Is there a way to make the ringer and notification volumes to be linked together so they both change to when I use my volume buttons? The buttons only change the ringer volume and I want it to change both ringer and notification volumes together.
I tried Quick Settings from the Play store which I have used on other phones to "link" the volumes. But it doesn't do that on my SGS3. I have tried a couple other apps that say they do that, but again they don't link the volumes together on my SGS3. Anybody know how to do this?
Having trouble with AudioGuru (paid). It doesn't seem to effect the volume either. Alert function not adjusting the alert.
More details.
With the Alert Notification sound set in GoSMS, the phone Alert Notification sound is different. AudioGuru only shows the Phone Alert Notification sound not the GoSMS Alert Notification sound. When muting the AudioGuru 'Alert' only the Phone Alert Notification sounds is muted. The GoSMS Alert Notification sound is not effected thus not muted etc..
I hope we find a fix to this. I'll be checking back but I too would like both these sounds to be at the same level. Thinking I had my phone on silent and then getting slammed with a notifcation ring is not what I intended.
Wait.. they aren't pre linked?

I will be watching this thread too. I have tried many apps on the market that said it could link ringer and notification sounds, but none of them worked. Hopefully there is a workaround for this. When I turn my volume all the way down, I assume it will make no noise. Then I had my email sound go off at 3AM when I was sleeping. Not what I wanted at all. Many phones have this option in the sound settings, so I don't see why Samsung couldn't have put that in here.

^^^ This.
I've spent the last day un-TouchWiz'ing the phone as much as possible (replacing apps with AOSP ones, launcher with Trebuchet, etc) but this volume thing is driving me batty.
I have been able to get the ringer and officiating sounds to "link" using the Go Switch widget. It works all the time when you open the widget and check the box to link the two and adjust the volume while the widget is open but Ive also got it working otherwise but this is spotty.
Yes! i would love to have the 2 linked. When I first got the phone I couldnt figure out why the ringer was so low and the Notifications were so loud.
Hey I am having some major sound issues with my device. The only changes I have made are rooting it. Sound modes seem to have no effect on volume sliders. When the volume is on and if I go to vibrate mode or silent mode, nothing happens. All the volume stays on and will continue. I tried bypassing the issue by installing volume control + with no results. Volume sliders were not changed by the app either. Anyone else have this issue, any ideas on how to fix it?
Thanks
Update: Resolved, there was something wrong with the root package I used the first time. I used a new one and all is good.
Afaik 'silent' only applies to alerts and notifications such as the phone ringing on incoming calls. It does not apply to the multimedia volume.

The issue includes notifications and ringtone. They both continue to play at normal volumes in silent and vibrate mode.
Changing to cyanogenmod fixed this issue for me.
