The new Galaxy s5 in some apk files there are some new files with extention .pkm instead of .png ...
So i was wondering if there is a tool for Windows to convert .pkm files to .png files and vise versa...
Cause if we can not convert the pkm files to pngs, how we will make Themes??????
In a little research i made in the internet i found out that .pkm files are also image files but with smaller size than pngs...
So if all companies switch to that pkm files we must find a way to continue Theming right??? So if anyone knows a solution please report here...
Thanks ....
You had me wondering about it too so I looked it up.

Download Mali compression tool here: http://malideveloper.arm.com/develo...t-creation/mali-gpu-texture-compression-tool/
Then when install is done, go to <mali install folder>/bin
Then:
Code:
etcpack <input.pkm> <outputdir> -ext PNG
<input.pkm> is your pkm file to unpack and <outputdir> is your folder where the unpacked png will go
Warning:some pkm can't to be unpacked, it seems alpha channel pictures is not supported (i'm maybe wrong)
Thanks Mate... Will try it...

Ok i tried it but when i save the .pkm files as .png files, it doesn't keep trasparency (it puts black background)... So it's impossible to work with these pngs... Also there is no batch proccess of converting the pkm files... This is also a big problem for Themers... Imagine that in every Theme of mine i change thousands of the icons... So it will take me years to convert one by one the .pkm files...
So we need a tool that can make batch convertion of the .pkm files, WITHOUT loosing transparency, to png files... And then when we finish editing/changing the png files created, to batch convert them again in pkm files, to replace the original ones...
Only if there is such a solution we will be able to theme the new pkm files...
it is really absurd I'm looking for a solution too... please advice in case of news

If you need a batch file to convert from .pkm to png I can make one for you in less than 5 minutes.
But probably more than half of the pkm files won't be converted because what we actually need is some software that let us convert any kind of pkm files to png.
For now me and some friends can convert some pkm files but not all of them...

The AndroidSDK command line tool works for encoding and decoding your own images but doesn't decode a lot of the existing Android .pkm images. The error returned is bad header PKM Header.
Those same existing images won't decode with the Mali Tool either. (conversely, any png images I encode to .pkm will decode properly)
Trying to figure out why some existing ones won't decode using either approach. Gonna try updating the SDK stuff when I get to my office tomorrow to see if it helps.
Be nice if someone has/gets a solution. :good:

Yeah. If you open a "good" pkm (the ones that can be converted) and a "bad" ones with an hexadecimal editor you will see that the bad ones have IPT0 in the header. So that's the reason why we can't convert it. It looks like it's not a conventional pkm file or at least not the pkm file we would expect :/

ANyone knows if will delete the .pkm files inside the apks and put .png files with the same names as the .pkm files had, will do the job???
Or it's neccesary the icon files to be pkm?
Cause if the apks using pkm files, will recognize png files with same name, it's easier. The only problem is that we will not know the dimentions of pkm files...

We can know the dimensions of the pngs to create, open the pkm in a hexadecimal editor like notepad++, see the header:
8 Columns of 4 Numbers each
-The Third Column is the width size in hexadecimal
-The Fourth Column is the height size hexadecimal
Example :
Here the width is 60 so 0x60(Hexadecimal) = 96 (décimal)
Here the height is also 60 so 0x60(Hexadecimal) = 96 (décimal)
The PNG should be a 96x96 icon (or picture)
Hoping i could be clear :fingers-crossed:

I've been trying to make a couple of modifications to framework-res.apk and I've been having a lot of trouble. I've bootlooped the DX2 more than a few times (and was able to recover with the recently released SBF).
I've tried making one change, I've tried signing the file, I've tried not signing it, I've tried different compression levels on the zip, all with no luck. The one time I got my apk into the phone with my change on board (I verified that it was there) my change was ignored by the phone. (I've been trying to replace /res/drawable-hdp/zz_moto_list_texture_bg.png to change the default list background from the light gray to black.)
Has anyone been successful making modifications to this file in a DX2? If so, how did you do it?
What did program did you zip it with?
What was the compression set to?
Did you sign the file? If so, with what program and key?
What method did you use to drop framework-res.apk back into the phone?
Are there any files that should not be modified? (I've heard to leave the ".9" files alone.)
Thanks,
Chris
I've been trying to do the exact same thing and haven't got too far. I'm doing dev stuff thru Ubuntu and it seems to be very friendly along with gimp. I've actually been able to drag and drop replacement files without extracting the apk but haven't been able to flash it inside a theme. I haven't actually tried just replacing the framework.
Staying tuned...

You can make a theme at uot.dakra.lt and flash the .zip file to your phone.. jus upload your framework-res.apk to the site once you make it, but anyway, they modify the file and it worked for me.

Yes I've been using this but it's not really set up for blur. we're talking about going deeper than UOT can reach with current software.

You can recompile and decompile with apkmanager, but its not without some hiccups. First, it compresses the resources.arsc which unlike the rest of the apk needs to be decompressed. To fix this I pull it out then with 7zip I add it back to the framework-res archive with zip as the format and store as compression. That fixes the boot-loops. Even after that there's been some minor problems with it recompiling certain .xml a little goofy.
But at least it doesnt cause a boot loop.
Posted it here because i need a dev.
I pulled my Framework-res.apk and modified all the icons for everything. I decompiled using apktool.
My question is what steps do i take now (do i need to sign it, what a good tool to recompile it as apktool does and gives me a framework-res.apk but caused my phone not to boot up)..also someone said seomthing about resources.arsc or something..not sure where to go...thanks for your help.
Open ur new apk using 7zip (righr click>7zip>open archive) and do the same with ur old one. Delete the resources.xxxx(i dont know the name by heart lol) and drag and drop the one (by one i meant the resources.xxxx file) from the new zip to the old zip and adb push ur old frameworkres apk and reboot

sounds more like a question. Use apk manager and or 7zip
how does just that one file carry over all the new pics and stuff i changed...
edited......
What exactly have you edited? If you just change non patch9 images... then you can just drag and drop the new images into the apk (may have to rename apk to zip).
If they are patch9's... you need to..
decompile framework-res.apk (apktool d framework-res.apk)
swap out images
recompile (apktool b framework-res)
Now take the newly compiled apk (in the /dist folder). Open it up and take the edited images (only the ones you need changed) and put them into your original apk.
No need to resign just push it to your phone and verify that it works
If you are editing xml files in /values* or /layout..
do the same as above, except after re-compiling, you're going to swap over the resources.arsc file to the original apk.
This is using apktool... in my experience apk manager doesn't do the job to my expectations... so i just do it manually with apktool.
Lemme know if u need anything more, or if i didnt touch on a specific situation.
Btw, maybe to combat the retarded comments about q&a and being in the right section... maybe turn the OP into a How-To?

Thanks you, sorry about the stupid framework-res question...i knew the answer but had been so long forget the simplest of steps....instead of normal compression i was using store instead.....duh.......thank you though for the reminder because 7zip will automatically restore the same it was decompressed with, unlike that crap winrar. Have a good one man and thank you again.
If the battery icons are just png files, couldn't I create my own images in photoshop and replace the framework-res.apk files with my custom icons? If so, does anyone know the typical dimensions for the png images? I replaced my original battery with the ICS battery thanks to a suggestion of using NinjaMorph.
You can extract the framework-res. Apk from the system folder. Tinker around with what you find inside it. Use 7zip to modify the zip without having to resign it.
Now, flashing the update zip is not going to be easy without recovery. But you can assess png dimensions, and tinker with modding them meanwhile. It's a hobby of mine also

Thanks. I used the ICS battery info that I have now which was 25x25 png images and created my own battery images and animations, but when I use NinjaMorph to resign the apk nothing happens on reboot. Not sure if the sizing is off or what. So when you use 7zip you just flash the new zip in recovery? Can't seem to find the apk for 7zip

When you use NinjaMorph, make sure to 'finish' the project by clicking on the button, then on the project. Also, make sure the files were named exactly the same and were replaced. The battery icons used in the framework-res.apk were the ones names like such:
stat_sys_battery_bn_40.png
stat_sys_battery_bn_60.png
stat_sys_battery_bn_80.png
etc....

I'm piggybacking on this thread, but I have a question about replacing the battery images.
I've got the images (from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21003708&postcount=10), but when I open the the image folder (with NinjaMorph) in framework-res.apk/res/drawable, I can't find the corresponding image files.
In that folder, where I thought the battery images were, I have a few .xml files (stat_sys_battery.xml, stat_sys_battery_bn.xml etc) and only 2 .png files (stat_sys_battery_charge_anim6.png and stat_sys_battery_charge_anim7.png).
Am I in the wrong place, or where have I messed up along the way? Thanks in advance for any replies.
as far as image sizes go mine are 38x38 png files and they work fine. i have used several different sets without fail. also to save time you dont have to change the images, just the ones with the "bn" in the name.
also if you are doing all this on a computer you can download metamorph from the market, there is a free and paid version, and you can create the file path to the images using correctly named folder in a zip file and use metamorph to auto install. i have not tried this method myself but it should work.
@topched in ninjamorph start a new project, go to system > framework > framework-res.apk > res > drawable-mdpi, scroll down till you see the battery images.
also if you wanted to create the metamorph the file path is framework-res > res > drawable-mdpi
and if you wanted to change your wifi meter to match your battery meter, like i do, the path is system > app > SystemUI.apk > res > drawable-mdpi
metamorph filepath would be SystemUI > res > drawable-mdpi
iirc its in drawable-mdpi
Edit: oops didnt see the last reply.

Once you rezip the framework-res.apk, you can use adb to replace it as well.
adb devices
adb remount
adb push c:\location of apk file /system/framework/framework-res.apk
adb reboot
That will allow you to change the images without recovery. though I think nearly everyone has recovery now anyhow.
Also note, you want to replace the images into the framework-res.apk file without extracting it. open it with winrar or 7zip, navigate to the drawable-mdpi folder, drop images in and click ok on adding/altering the file. Then push it back.
Ok I finally got the icons replaced after tinkering and trying the suggested methods. Thanks for all of the input and direction. This is my Android battery. Pretty basic, but something I thought might look cool.

Ninjamorph has really been hit or miss with me. I have always used ninjamorph and metamorph before that with high rates of success. On the NT, it seems like it will work sometimes, and other times it does nothing. I noticed it mostly with the menu.background.png trying to alleviate the white on white issue. I replaced the image at least 20 times and it did nothing. Finally I just gave up on it and pushed the new .apk with adb and it was done.

heres an example on how to edit the files in framework-res.apk.
what i did was extract the Battery.png's into a folder, then i edit them in paint, then i use photoshop to make the background transparent because paint saves them with a white background. im doing em 1 by one. its very time consuming. once i am done editing them, i will move them back into framework-res.apk (Hopefully overwriting the other files of the same name).. then from there, im still looking on how to create a flashable zip.
NOTE: i always save them with the same name as when they were extracted from framework-res.apk

Sweet! I may give this a run when I get a chance. I'm trying to theme my HTC Rezound with a custom battery and anything else I can tinker with. Thanks.
OK so I decided to write a tutorial with some hints on how to make a Sense 3.6 theme. This may also work on Sense 3.5 but I don’t have it to test it. This is done on Windows 7 64bit, but it should work similarly on earlier versions of Windows.
What you will need
M10 Tools
APK Multi Tool
Photo Editing Software – I use Photoshop AND Fireworks but Gimp will also work
Notepad++
Latest java and adb
Patience
Creativity
Please follow the instructions for proper installation of all of these tools on their respective page.
Download my basis theme
Copy the file into the place-apk-here-for-modding folder
Open the script
Option 25 – Set Current Project
Choose the basis theme
Option 9 – Decompile
Go to the Projects folder
Go to the com.htc.skin.rachelm920_basis folder
Go to the res folder
Drawable-hdpi and drawable-land-hdpi have the images. Values has the .xmls
Make any image edits you like. Also make and .xml edits you like.
I typically take the images in this folder and separate them based on the type, making several folders for different things like “pressed”, “focused” , “normal” “black” etc. Then whatever I changed black to I also change any references to 000000 to the color I changed it to. I do the same for the other colors. Make sure you keep the black lines on the .9 images. I usually use the “magic wand” to select the black borders and then do an invert selection so I select the rest of the picture. Make sure you move all the images back when done, and delete the folders.
Choose AndroidManifest.xml and open it with notepad++
Under where it says package=”com.htc.skin.rachelm920_basis” change the rachelm920_basis to what you would like your theme to be titled
Open M10 tools – M10Editor.exe
Click Load file
Browse to Projects\com.htc.skin.rachelm920_basis\assets\rachelm920_basis\drawable
Make sure the file type is m10 file
Choose shared.m10
Click on the m10 files tab
Check the Decode images box
Click Decompile/Show
In the editor tab select textures then texture
You should see a picture on the right
Right click on the picture and choose show in explorer
Make any image edits you like. I do the same process here as I did in the other folders.
In M10 tools click on the start tab
Click Save File
Close the M10 tools
Browse to projects\com.htc.skin.rachelm920_basis\assets
Rename rachelm920_basis to your skin name
In the Image folder, put a wallpaper you would like your skin to have as wallpaper.jpg replacing the one already there
This folder also contains the theme previews which are impossible to achieve unless you have root and a screen print program AFTER you install the theme on your phone.
Go back to APK Tool
Choose 11 - Compile
Is this a system apk? No
Would you like to copy over any additional files that you didn’t modify from the original apk in order to ensure least # of errors? YES
Go to the keep folder
Delete resources.arsc, the rachelm920_basis folder, wallpaper.jpg, and all of the images in drawable-hdpi and drawable-land-hdpi folders
Go back to APK Tool and press any button
Choose 12 - Sign apk
Go to the place-apk-here-for-modding folder. There should be a file called signedcom.htc.skin.rachelm920_basis.apk. Rename it to your theme's name. You can remove the word "signed" also.
Copy to the SD Card on your phone, browse using a file explorer and install.
If you have problems recompiling make sure that all of your .9 images have the black borders. Check the log file, it usually tells you what you did wrong.
Some good websites –
http://www.colourlovers.com where I get my color schemes from
http://www.color-hex.com a good hex site and also gives you color schemes based off of one color.
PS - The basis theme does not look good, it is just a basis to use to create your own.
Open for me
question, does this make a theme or a skin?
Skin sorry I worded it wrong

Then what do you mean it won't install? You have to extract the zip file and run the .exe file inside it.

Hi i dont have note 4 but problem started with the note 4 so i want to ask
1 why samsung uses qmg and pio and no png?
2 its posible to convert from qmg and pio apk to png apk?
look here :https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/themes-apps/tool-converter-qmg-png-t2916486
Well mate. In order:
1. First Samsung started to use the .Qmg and .Pio because of the reason Size/Quality, I mean, for example. A Qmg for an Icon, have 700Kb of Size, but the same, in Png, have 1Mb of Size. The same happens with Pio format.
2. Well, there exist an Apk Conversor, developed by @xperiacle. And edited by @Ale95 and his team to enable multiple format conversion compatibility. It is called Qmg2Png, and you can find it here https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/themes-apps/app-qmg2png-tool-t3360303 , but: You need to have a phone wich can read Qmg/Pio Image format, if you don't have it, it won't work
