Make sure you're on the latest version of flashtool also.
Sent from my C6833 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
1. Have the latest version of Flashtool
2. You don't need to have CWR to flash FTFs. FTFs are usually stock Sony ROMs which are flashable without root. What you're about to do is installing CWR so you can flash a pre-rooted KitKat build (ZIP).
- Downgrade, root, backup TA if you haven't already, install CWR, flash ROM.

Got it all sorted, I now have an unlocked bootloader.
One thing, It seems I cant update OTA or through PC companion, is that sound right? I havent seen anywhere where it says you cant do that.
It pops up saying " The system has been modified, you may not update " Or something along those lines
Do I have to update through a FTF? And for future updates will I not be able to get them? :'(
OTAs normally will fail. So you will have to use FTFs

Yeah, I got the same error. You HAVE to update to the latest Flashtool. It won't work unless you do that.
- Uninstall Flashtool
- Go to C:/Flashtool and move your 681 FTF from the firmware folder to your desktop
- Delete the whole Flashtool folder, or else you'll get the install error when you update
- Install the latest Flashtool version. It's the only one that supports KitKat FTFs.

Yup, that's what it should do in theory, but that isn't the case around here (Win7). It starts removing the old files and it does it just fine, but then when it's extracting the new files into their respective directories, I (and many others) get an error that a file (always the same file) can't be replaced, so the only way of doing (that i've done at least) is to just manually delete the whole folder. It's very strange.
(No, running the install file as admin doesn't change anything)

I think your downloaded ROM is corrupted. What ROM you are trying to install?
There are only 2 ways I think.
- Install stock .ftf with flashtool
- Redownload the rom, and put it again to your sdcard (of course you need a card reader for it)
Just an advice, it is better if you create a CWM backup before flash a new ROM.

Provided you've got the cable for the phone you can also do it with adb:
Adb push "C:\temp\MyRom.zip" /sdcard/
But you'll need to go have a google for how to set up ADB - the drivers should be in the "PC Companion" software for SE phones.

Ok, I have Xperia P with ICS 4.0.4, build number 6.1.B.0.544. I saw few tutorials for rooting our XP and all of them have too much steps in my opinion. So, I downloaded Flashtool 0.9.6.0 from Flashtool page, installed it on my PC and trz to root my phone with Root button, and simply followed the instructions from Flashtool. Now I have root acess with SuperSU app on my phone!
Could it be simpler than that?
Method for 6.1.B.0.544 and 6.1.B.0.559 update:
Rooting via Flashtool:
1. Download Flashtool 0.9.6.0 from Flashtool Homepage:
http://androxyde.github.com/
2. Install it on your PC
3. Run the Flashtool and connect your phone (enable USB debugging first/turn on unknown sources)
4. Hit the Root button (second in row)
5. When you see "waiting for restore to finish" open your phone and run Backup&Restore app and restore RootMe.tar file.
6. Wait until Flashtool do the rest of work
7. Enjoy!
Don't forget to hit THANKS button!
For those guys who dont have Backup&Restore.apk on their phones u can try to install it manually:
View attachment 1443500
EDIT: Method for 6.1.1.B.1.54/6.1.1.B.1.75 update:
1. Download .zip file attached below.
2. Update ur phone via Flashtool or PCC to 6.1.1.B.1.54/6.1.1.B.1.75 update.
3. Flash .559 kernel via Flashtool. (no need for checking kernel number on ur phone if flashing is successfully done, just go to the next step)
4. After flashing reboot ur phone and use regular method above for .544 and .559 firmware.
5. When u r done flash .54/.75 kernel via flashtool and reboot ur phone.
6. Enjoy!
EDIT 2: Method for JB update[LB]:
1. Root any of above ICS ROMs
2. Install OTA RootKeeper from Google Play Store
4. Start OTARootKeeper and click "Protect root"
5. Click "Temp. unroot"
6. Update JB via OTA
7. Enjoy!
If this doesn't work for you try with this method.

It's not the back button for XPERIA U, it's volume down. Also you need to install the drivers from the Flashtool directory. There is a drivers folder and a setup file to run inside it.

I am on a rooted C6806 (Still locked) and the updater on the phone downloads the file and then it reboots and tries to install but cannot. Error updating is all I get.
I don't have a recovery and I would rather not wipe the whole device. Is there anyway to just update? Or at least is there anyway to get the stupid thing out of my notification bar if I decided I don't want to bother wiping the device?
I tried updating from the phone and also using the sony software, neither works.

I had a similar failure trying to use the PC Companion.
Can you give me a quick tutorial for flashing the FTF without wiping data?
I assume I'll lose root?
Ah okay you have probably removed some system files and that is what is causing the errors when updating since you are rooted. Yes you would lose root if you flashed the ftf file and from looking at a few other posts you can't root .257 yet.
Search for flashtools and you will find numerous guides on here. After you have it all installed and select the firmware to flash just uncheck the wipe data check box that way it will keep your apps and settings.
The ftf file is in my signature. If you need any more help or have other questions let me know.

Yes, I did freeze a bunch of services with titanium backup that were running in the background.
Ok, I do have flashtool, I just didn't realize that you could do it without wiping data, good to know.
I want to keep root so I'll hold off for now. But thank you for the help!
If you just froze them and didn't delete them try unfreezing them then update. Just check the forums for how people are keeping root while updating so you don't lose it.

I could not root my 800at phone with this firmware. I am on a locked bootloader/stock kernel. ive used 2 programs to root.
try to flash .79 kernel, then root, then flash .84 kernel again, it might work.

I know it works, but you need to unlock the bootloader to do it that way
