Flashing from a custom ROM usually does no harm. Provided you flash it properly with proper data clearance. And in some cases you have to flash the stock rom before you can continue to flash the new ROM. If you have not taken a backup of your stock ROM, you can download your stock ROM from your device forom.

Most of the times you can flash like this when you want a new rom. Delete /cache /data /system (you can also wipe /dalvik cache from your recovery then flash the zip file and google apps and what ever you want to flash from recovery. Hope it helps. Good luck!
It doesn't matter if you're a custom ROM. You can download a new custom ROM and go to the recovery and do the 3 wipes (factory reset, cache partition, dalvik cache) and just install. Make sure you make a nandroid backup before wiping and doing anything!
Is it must to be on stock rom when developer of custom rom says " be on stock rom is advisable"...

Nope. I never do that! But be sure to clear all data and so on. It is completely fine if you are on a stock based ROM.

Guys,
Can anyone tell me if there is any possibility to flash the Custom ROM like Cynam 7 after flashing kernel. I had flashed the franco v15 kernel on my LG optimus without changing the ROM. Now I want to change the custom ROM and wanted to flash Cynma7 as prepared by mik.
One more question, I read it somewhere that to flash the custom ROM, you need to wipe our cache and other things, prepare partitions on SD card etc but I didnt find this information when I was reading the thread of Cynam 7 prepared by mik.
Can anyone help me?
Can somebody please reply to my query.

If you flash custom rom your old kernel will be replaced with kernel in the rom. Than you can flash any kernel to change it. The procedures to flash mik rom is simple its same Like you flashed kernel no need to partition if not planning to use any type of apps2sd things. Just take nandroid backup from recovery, format /system (for same flash),and wipe all (you will loose all data), and flash.

Hey all
We were trying to flash stock rom on a friends i9100 mobile and stupidly we selected .pit file (yeah I know stupid ,,,,,) It was a mistake and now when we try to flash a rom, odin gets stuck at factory_fs.img. We have checked for brick sectors but everything seems fine.
By flashing a kernel we can boot into recovery, that is possible we have done this. if anyone can plz provide a nandroid backup for this mobile we can restore from that backup. I think that this will work. So please if anyone can help us plz
Regards
Bilal

Thanks for you reply. I tried to help him flash Chameleon but it is not working. Any ROM that you would like to recommend, please ??
Maybe I am wrong but when we flashed earlier with the pit file, doesn't it mess up the partition ?? if that is the case will your method work ?? because all customs roms say ( if you are coming form this rom do this, coming from this rom do this and his mobile has nothing)
Thanks
solved, we flashed Resurrection rom and it worked then we flashed a stock rom.
Hi,
I downloaded a stock rom from sammobile ( I9100XWLQ2_I9100XXLQ6_I9100PROLP4_HOME.tar.md5 )
I am pretty sure this is the right one because this has already worked once.
But now my phone hangs during startup. I wait really lot (10 mins) but still it hangs, even I always see the animation of 'S'
I flashed again a custom rom now, but i want a stock rom back. How can i flash?
thanks
You must perform a factory reset from the recovery. Either do it from the custom rom, then flash stock ROM, or flash stock rom, boot into recovery and then wipe /data. Order doesn't matter.

After you flash the stock rom go back into download and flash v4 of Siyah kernel (.tar) , then boot into recovery and do wipe/factory reset.
It is not necessary to install a new kernel, just factory reset from stock recovery

I didnt say it was necessary, I just advised it since Siyah kernel is better then stock anyway for many reasons and since he's into trying new roms its much better to have custom kernel/recovery. Plus the fact that if user was to try flashing a 4.0.3 rom then wipe in stock recovery he would brick his device.
Not sure about brick, AFAIK brick occurs with 4.0.4. Anyway I would prefer more stock-ish kernel like CFroot.

If you thought that, why on earth would you advise him to wipe in stock recovery???? The rom he is trying to flash is 4.0.4
Guess I wasn't reading thoroughly .. I take mt words back.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
If u r on stock 4.0.4 first change your kernel then try to factory reset.. Everything will be fine... Dont do factory reset on cmw on stock kernel...

Okay, thanks for all the replies. When I flash stock kernel, will clockworkmod be erased? I am just asking.. I know I can easily flash it back

Do you mean flash "stock rom"? Yes if you flash stock rom you will lose cwm and only hav stock recovery.
Once you have flashed your stock rom you should then immediately flash your custom kernel (Like Siyah). Once flashed reboot into recovery (cwm) and wipe data/factory reset.

When flashing a stock ROM (include kernel of course) it overwrite the exists kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
When you will flash stock rom over custom rom everything will be erased if android version is different if same then you will face problems has phone will not work properly you have to factory reset it first install different kernel use philz it will root your phone directly and installs cmw then factory reset it from cmw.
You can also reset your phone from settings but in between you will face errors this that not working etc. use 1st method your phone will not have brick bug issue.
And for giving thanks use thank button

Is it also possible to flash dorimanx after flashing stock rom?
As most of the people among us flash latest custom roms.. for which we need to go for for odin flash & as we know it is an irritating process.. thus can we just restore stock firmware via cwm rather than the odin flash, so as to perform a custom rom flash??
(i personally restored stock rom but i found stock kernel hasn't restored thus i dont know, weather it gonna work or not..)
replies appriciated cos if this process works for sucessful custom rom flash then it will be helpful for lots of newbies like me
Recovery is part of the ramdisk, which is included with the kernel.
You can't modify something while it's running.
sorry but i was talking about, that can we replace odin process with restoring stock firmware via cwm??

GermainZ already answered your question but apparently you don't know the difference between using Odin n CWM for flashing.

u can install any kernel by using d correct processs...
1) First root and unlock bootloader of ur device using flashtool.
if u dont have flashtool download from http://androxyde.github.io/
2) after that in flashtool folder (c:/flashtool) u ll have drivers install drivers for xperia u, fastboot and flashtool drivers (u need to tick mark in boxes for desired drivers).
3) Its always better to have backup, install CWM and take take nanandroid backup by entering CWM.
Moving on to the installation process
1) Copy the rom zip file to internal storage.
2) through flashtool enter fastboot mode and flash kernel that ispresent along with the rom zip..
3) after that enter CWM and install ZIp.
4) let the device boot properly....... and if prompted restart the device..
5) Download and copy the kernel of ur wish and den flash.
6) before flashing just wipe cache and dalvik cache.
7) incase if u face any bootloop enter CWM mode and go to advance menu and clear cache and dalvik cache.......
I suggest u to use JB rom by Devswift its d best rom available among so many.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284394
I have given the whole process as u said ur in stock if u already rooted and unlocked just follow installation processss..............
Happy Flashing.......
Press THANKS if i have helped....
And also THANK every one who helps u in this forum.............
In step 2 ,u said to flash kernel that came with the rom.
Then u said install any kernel of ur choice after flashing rom
Well why can't I directly flash the kernel of my choice in step 2?
What's the logic?
Please explain a bit more about the kernel stuff.
Thanks in advance!

hope u understnd if any doubt reply
Thanks, lemme know this also- >
Some kernels come with an inbuilt recovery. Now what if the recovery isn't compatible with my phone?
Will it get bricked?
The kernel that comes with the rom, what if that kernel has this issue?

Kernel with CWM (any version) ll be used no pblm wid dat...
If u have any pblm wid kernel given in d zip den.....
1) download a custom kernel with CWM recovery and install it by doing all wipes...
2) now open the rom zip and remove boot img or kernel elf what ever file it may be and repack the zip and installl zip
3) if u dont remove the kernel file from dat zip i ll nly will get installed during installing rom zip
And during installing custom kernel from zip file ur device may undergo bootloop(stuck at boot animation)....
Den dont panic just go to CWM recovery and wipe cache and dalvik and restart it ll start up normally.....
Hope:good: it helps....

There are no pre requisites for flashing a kernel.
Just flash a stock kernel for stock based roms and a CM kernel for CM based roms,
Also check if the rom you want to flash and kernel you intend to flash are based on the same firmware version for optimum performance....
Happy flashing.!!!:good:
Done. working.thanks
