If I'm understanding you correctly, you want to flash a 4.4 ROM or take a 4.4 OTA, correct? If so, what kind of phone are you using?

Oh OK. I thought that was a ROM. OK, so if you're looking for the OTA, you need to check for software updates on your phone. You should be notified when these come. But from the sounds of it, I'm inferring that there won't be one for your phone, because your current OS it's so outdated. What's the model number? If you gave me your model number, I could try to find you a ROM you could flash.
You'll need to root (if you haven't) if you decide to flash a ROM. You can do it using bin4ry, according to this post.

I just did it with bin4ry (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460) and it worked fine. Has been an hour and has stayed rooted. Not sure why it didn't work for you...

You'll also need to flash a custom recovery, such as TWRP or CWM. This might be tricky... I can't find any...
Then you'll need to flash the ROM via recovery mode that you will find and install. I found this one on Google: http://micromaxkitkatrom.blogspot.ca/2013/10/upgradeupdate-karbonn-a4-to-44-kitkat.html
To be completely honest though, it will be difficult. You'll need to find a custom recovery that you can use, or you won't be able to flash the ROM. Also, I'm not even sure whether or not this ROM will work. I've never seen a ROM split into 3 parts.

Not sure that system update has a lot to do with root. First of all, you need to check if there're official updates for your device. And then, it's quite risky to install unofficial system updates (if there're any).
thanks for your answers. At the moment there isn't official update for my device...So i would to install a new cooked rom, like ICS... It's possible on my phone?

That depends on the ROM and the requirements it needs. You'd better consult ROM developers in this case.

It first needs to be rooted. The easiest way I found to root it is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/framaroot/root-framaroot-one-click-apk-to-root-t2130276
You can then install a custom recovery using Odin or any alternatives, or look for a way to install a .zip from within the phone (I can help with that once you root it and find a ROM.
After some "Googling", I found some ROMs and many guides on YouTube, but none was for the 4.4 KitKat.

Root doesn't magically give you access to updates that have never come out.
OP: There's a good chance there is no version of 4.4 (stock or custom) for your phone, but without knowing WHICH Q Mobile phone you have, no one can tell you what is available for it.

It shows in the screenshot that it is QMobile A7. I searched a lot but didn't find any KitKat based ROM (stock or custom). The latest I found is 4.1.2, and they are very unknown and I don't recommend trying them.

This app doesn't root, it only checks if the phone is rooted.
For help rooting your device, I suggest seeing this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332768
My boyfriend's AT&T Galaxy Alpha just auto-updated to lollipop.. nothing seem to work correctly, even with a factory reset. Everything was working perfectly fine on Kit Kat. I was wondering is it possible to downgrade back to Kit Kat with this phone?
I have limited experience with Android. I know it is possible to do this for devices that is rooted (e.g my Galaxy S5 or my Nexus 7). But I don't quite know where to start for the SM-850A, where the device is not rooted.

Hello,
Downgrading is not shown as an option, neither is someone working on a root exploit for either of the versions (KitKat and Lollipop in this case) so I guess you're stuck with the Lollipop version. Although its not that bad you could wait for someone to release a rooting method so it could get easier for you to downgrade but until then you're stuck :/ Sad to say there arent much choices with that model :/
Best regards,
James

Thanks James! yeah I know this model doesn't have a root and I don't think it will ever be an option (never say never but meh!)... But curious was it possible to downgrade without a root. Thanks for answering my question I like the phone, I did buy it for myself (and the bf too).. but I returned it after seeing there was no root... but the bf kept his...now he is hating it!

Hello,
The issue is that you cannot get the KitKat firmware from anywhere, nobody has ever tried to upload it at all, otherwise I would of recommended it for sure.
Best regards,
James
you should try to download the stock KK from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G850F/

Hello and welcome to XDA Q&A section of the Forum.
I assume you have some knowledge in the android world of modding (some people don't and some people do) and that you have rooted your phone, here is the thread to the ROM.
Goodluck and hopefully I helped you, if I did, hit "thanks"

True but who likes Samsungs stock ROM any way? It is buggy, full of bloatware and eats your RAM like Google chrome.
May be.but I have hugucrespect for stock ROMs since I experienced all custom ROMs in so many devices.
If you have rooted your stock ROM,Its enough.
And I really love stock samsung and LG ui.
I have a P780 4GB ROW 4.2 OS with Carliv recovery.
I'd like to upgrade to either 4.4 or 7.1.
I can't find a way to do it right because whatever ROM I tried, they all fail.
Could someone please help me?

Hi.
To upgrade from Android 4.2 to Android 4.4, you must flash the firmware with SP Flash Tool.
Because you have now custom recovery you cannot upgrade your firmware by OTA.
Look in development area for stock firmware.
Good luck.
Thank you stympy. That explains it.
Unfortunately, I don't have a computer.
If I understand you correctly, I have to push the stock firmware in order to flash a custom ROM be it 4.4 or 7.1?

Yes. You must flash 4.4 then install Latest TWRP for Lenovo. You can find all the tool in q&a section/rooting tutorial... First sticky post. There is a complete tutorial.
