Small gap in speaker grill? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my z2 and noticed a small gap on the speaker Grill the top of the phone? Is this for the phone microphone or LED light? Just want to make sure it's not a defect and water gets in.
Take a look at the pic (if I uploaded it correctly...)

I'm sure it must be for the LED. Its easy to test tho, just turn phone on and email yourself from your computer. :fingers-crossed:

The led shows underneath the whole center of the speaker grill. So not sure if that's the reason.

Mine doesn't have that gap. The speaker grille is uniform across the entire speaker hole on mine.

Interesting, I noticed that the LED was being blocked by this "gap" so I got a small paperclip and poked at it. Looks like this might be a rubber gasket. All the tear down photos don't show the screen being removed so can't tell exactly. I'm guessing this might just be cosmetic but until I dip it in water I can't really tell.
What would you guys do? Speaking with the store to try and get a replacement...

Send it to Sony Center for repairing if you want to keep the water resistant.
It is hard to replace the replacement part by a freshman.

Not many Samsung hardware engineers on this forum I guess.
come on guys you can do better. waiting for replies. i had the guts to get my galaxy S2 opened to solve this problem
Looks like just what you said, a piece of plastic that is used to insulate it, and/or block dust from entering thru the mic hole.
Ah - that's the temporal distributor. When you speak into your phone it can take a few seconds to convert that to a digital signal, transmit it to the other person and then convert it back to an audible sound. The temporal distributor uses tachyon particles to convert the audio to digital AND send it back in time, so that there's less of a delay. It just means that people will hear you a few seconds after you speak, but no-one will know that unless they're in the same room as you.
Urm... Wow? My SGS2 can send out signals faster than light?
So it uses a Tachyon Digital to Analog convertor (DAC)?
Urm... where is the flux capacitor located, and if I travel at 60mph, does it take me into a tunnel with swirly lights then reappear somewhere else either in the future or past?

No mate - that's at 88mph
Incidentally, travelling faster than light wouldn't make you go back in time. Light is all about perception, not reality.
thanks but since this part has been removed from my phone by the authorized service centre, will it affect my phone in any way. i am really worried now and from where can i get the replacement for only this part. anyways i received the below reply from an ebay vendor selling replacement mics

That plastic piece is not supposed to be there.
There is another microphone on the top of the phone, you can see it in your picture, and it hasn't got the protection.
That protection is only used during production, the microphone is picked up by a machine using vacuum, so it must have a flat surface. The protection must be peeled off before assembly of the phone.
It is a mic grommet, it should be there.
So nobody else got this piece of plastic? Didn't check by myself...but also got this damn bad mic -.-
I had it. Just took it off and the mic is less worse now.

i think samsung service is taking off these parts on phones having the mic problem, anyone else planning a visit to Samsung ASS to get this sorted.

are you sure this plastic piece is not supposed to be there. have you checked your phone. seen a disassembled phone on ifixit it had this plastic on the mic. really confusing. samsung needs to answer how can they leave things inside the phone that interfere with normal performance of the phone

why not give it a try but make sure the samsung technician opens the handset in front of you and returns the plastic piece back to you. unfortunately i was not returned the plastic piece.

Oops! Sorry, I took a look at the service manual now. I only saw your pic before.
That part is called a grommet, usually made of rubber, it is supposed to absorb vibrations from the case and not transfer them to the microphone. Also helps to route the sound from the hole in the case to the microphone. Yes, it should be there, but it's not going to affect anything else but the sound quality.
Sorry for the misinformation.

Don't worry too much about not having the grommet in place. If your voice can be heard fine by the other party, there's nothing else to worry about.
Except water and dust.

[Q] Xperia Z2 water damaged

On Tuesday, I partially immersed my Xperia Z2 in water and somehow water got in [I am positive the flaps were sealed tightly (As a matter of fact, I didn't even submerge that part.)] I immediately turned the phone off and shook some water out of it and placed it in the sun. A few hours later, I turned on the device to find water in the display. I again turned it off and placed it in a box of rice and silica gel.
So today is the second day after the disaster. The phone seems to be functioning properly and I GUESS some of the water dried out.
SO this is what the display looks like as of now. (I attached an image)
Now, I don't know if this is just water (I believe that's what it is) or if the display is just damaged and I need to get it replaced?
I would really appreciate any kind of help

Can you please attatch a picture (or maybe email it to me at [email protected]) just so I can see what the display looks like..
Did you like try to do anything on your own with the phone to dry the water out or something?
Also, how long was your phone wet before you took it to the technician?
-Thank you

Some Z2s have a slightly open area between their frame and the screen. It's a manufacturing defect.
Does this defect exist even in recently manufactured units? I mean once Sony became aware of the defect they didn't bother correcting the manufacturing flaw ?
Every-time I submerge my Z2 underwater.. more or less 10cm- 20cm there is some condensation buildup on the cameras and flash. All flaps are closed, is this normal??
Here's mine after some water splash, I didn't even submerge the phone.
I tried to make the water dissappear by playing some games so the device gets hot, then I put it on the magnetic charger and the next morning the water was gone.
Warranty should cover it but I just didn't want to be without the phone for 3 weeks

Pretty bad waterproofing then! I also have a bit of moisture on the screen.
Will be leaving the phone overnight in rice, hoping it helps!

Much easier way: place the phone in an air-tight container filled with rich (or even silica gel). Works like a charm!

USB port went inside?

I want to ask if anyone's USB port is the same as these picture. I can see the green part and looked like it went it. Or this the default design?
That is a defect buddy. Mine has the metal inset part flush with the plastic surround. I would either get it fixed or replaced as it could cause charging and/or data transfer issues.

I would have said mine was flush too but now I'm looking at it, mine is recessed like yours.
Look on google images and they all look recessed.
If anyone's got a flush one can they post a picture please?

Hope this helps

Mine is the same as OP's. It looks like yours is a little further in than mine, but it could just be the picture. I cant see any of the green board in there. My metal USB port end lines up with the INSIDE of the case edge. So it is recessed, just like ~1mm less than yours..

Can yours see the green part as shown in the OP? If yours can then maybe is default stuff. Curious since I see one comment saying no green stuff but inside and one said covered
Now I'm even more curious. I sent a mail with the pictures in the op to Samsung and after a day they replied. They recommend me to bring to nearest Samsung center to service.
I feel like that's just the way it is, mine looks the same as yours
Mines slightly recessed but def cannot see the green board
Having said that, I've not plugged anything into the port as of yet in the 3 weeks I've had it - always used wireless charging

That looked good. You have well builded grey rubber thingy around the hole and is not too deep. Mine really looked deep. But Samsung refuse to repair because of the reason that it can be charged.

Not that port broken. The problem occur is if I put a case on, the usb can't plug in tightly. Slight movement will disconnect. So have to remove cover to charge. If it was outward a bit, maybe it will fix this problem.

Camera lens obstruction under glass

Never seen or heard of this before, but this happened to me. See attached image. What is this thing? It doesn't move when I tap the phone against something. Pictures are obviously crap. Is my next move removing the back cover to get rid of this thing?
Phone is less than 1 year old, but I don't think I can get warranty service as I bought it in the US as the international "no warranty" version from Amazon.

I got a hair dryer and guitar pick and pulled the back cover off just enough to get the debris out. It appears to be a stray bit of adhesive or sealing tape around the camera lens. All good now, except my phone is probably no longer waterproof.

Yes. I didn't pull off the entire back cover, only pulled up the corner where the camera is. I suppose I could buy a new back with fresh adhesive to try and make it waterproof again, but I'm not sure how successful that would be.

Smudge on display

Hello, I have a weird smudge on the top of the screen. Noticed it only yesterday.
When I wipe it off with a microfiber cloth it disappears but then when I wipe my finger in that area it shows again.
What could it be? Picture attached.

Its a small thing, but considering the cost of these devices I would try to return it you can.....glad it doesn't show up in the middle of the screen or anything - but I know if that were my phone I would see it constantly and it would bug the hell out of me...Good luck
regarding what it is - to me, it looks like it is not 'glued' or sealed properly in that location - I don't know for sure of course, but it does seem to appear lt is not sealed correctly in that area...

Ok I left the phone at the service center. Will see if I get a new one. They said they need to contact Samsung to approve it but since the phone is only 1 week old they are positive I would get a replacement.
So yesterday I got a new phone and the same thing is still present in exactly the same spot. A little smaller but clearly visible. I don't know what to do... If I get another replacement phone I guess the same issue will still be present...
Can anyone look at the same spot rub a finger along and see if they have this?

First of all, do not get offended, but do you wash your hands? How in the earth do you get the display on both phones so dirty, it seems at it does not have any oleophobic coating at all? Try to wash the phone in clear water, and see if the problem is still there. Also wash your hands, and try not to make the phone dirty, I have never seen so much dirt on a phone overall!
I returned an s9 plus that had this exact same issue. I thought it was me

Sorry, but are you making fun of me? I wash my hands multiple times during the day but unfortunately, I have sweaty fingers so what can I do? It's summer. Do you think you can keep your phone in the same condition as you took it from the box? That way you need to clean it every 10min... Washing does nothing however when you wash it water stays in that spot meaning there's no coating in that area.
Also, I went to my electronics store to check the devices on display and sure enough one had the same issue in the same spot. 100% lottery and manufacturing defect + horrible QC from Samsung.
The only way I see to resolve the problem is to apply a screen protector but personally, I hate them so I think I'll have to live with it. A replacement won't fix the issue and could even make it worse.
Like I said it's a lottery.
I was not making fun with you, I am sorry if it did seem like it. I understand sweaty fingers on summer time, but the phone is also on the bezels with something on it (dust or some particles), that is the reason why I mentioned it. Also, your both phones from the pictures look anyway waaay to smudgy all over the display, for me it is like the oleophobic coating is not there at all. I also have sweaty fingers and such but never, never had a display or phone looking like that, so it is for sure a manufacture defect.
As for the replacement unit, why do you think that it wont fix the issue and probably would make it worse?
If I was in your situation I would take it back and request a third device which does not have that fault. I have seen many S9/+ devices but none of it had such issue.
All of my phones have this. For me, its the diamond stud I wear on my left ear. Doesnt scratch but puts a "mark" on all my phones in the exact same place. Clean off looks fine, run greasy finger and they all smudge on the same spot. Most likely the diamond earring rubs off the invisible coating.
Ask for another replacement. This is unacceptable for a premium device like the s9+.
I only hit reply so I could ask how dirty are you, but I see someone has already beat me to it. No problems with my screen.. not to mention it's older than yours and cleaner without me doing anything.
