[Q] Which step here unlocked bootloader? Or did it unlock bootloader? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Reading a few articles here on XDA and a few outside about the general process of rooting and unlocking bootloader, here are a few things I have learnt (question is below) -
Usual steps to root -
1) Unlock bootloader or bypass bootloader.
2) Install a "Custom Recovery". Eg : CWM, TWRP.
3) Push(or copy) a binary file "su" to the "root" of the device using this "Custom Recovery".
For the Nexus, HTC and Sony devices, the first step (unlocking the bootloader) can usually be found on the website of the OEM itself.
It involves using "adb" and "fastboot" executables provided by Google.
BUT Samsung does NOT have this procedure.
Instead, MOST rooting procedures I have seen, use ODIN.
And the first steps are -
1) Boot to "Download mode"
2) Install "Custom Recovery" through ODIN.
So what EXACTLY is happening to the bootloader?
Does ODIN unlock the bootloader in Samsung devices?
OR is it just bypassed to install a Custom Recovery?
I hope this is a valid question!
And sorry for using all the quotation marks. I just wanted to highlight a few things and HTML tags for bold and italics are not working for me for some strange reason.

I love wrongly used quotation marks, some great websites for that!
With rooting every device is different and most Samsung devices do not need to have their bootloader unlocked. Its not better or worse just different. It's all about how the oem writes the firmware, Samsung just often doesn't have this, which also is why those same devices don't allow for fastboot commands, not written into the code
If you are asking how to root your device I would need more specifics on what it is but just know that unlocking the bootloader is not always a prerequisite.

I recently rooted my SGH-I577 and flashed CM11 on it.
Thanks to InkSlinger420!
In the process, I wanted to get a general idea of what is going on instead of only following the steps.
So I guess my Samsung phone is rooted but the bootloader is NOT unlocked?
And sorry for the quotation marks again.
I can't get the options on the top of the edit text message box to work. Like Bold, Italics, attach, hyperlink etc etc...
They're just thumbnails
The smilies on the side too...
Off topic, but help?

Wasnt picking on you by the way, just saying how fun it is to read sites like this
http://www.unnecessaryquotes.com
But to answer your question, you device doesn't have a step to unlock the bootloader in the rooting guide because it isn't needed. In a sense it is unlocked. The reason other devices need you to unlock the bootloader before root is there isn't another exploit to bypass the security checks done by the bootloader (and sometimes radio) so in order to root one of these often the first step is to unlock the bootloader.
Your bootloader doesn't run these same checks and so there is no need, again not necessarily better or worse, just different

Gave me a laugh, that website! I'll refrain from using quotes.
Thanks!
Have a better understanding of the root process now! (I think)

[Terminology] for different root methods

Now we have two distinct root methods for the N1. 1) Unlock the bootloader using fastboot and proceed accordingly. 2) Use the new method described with adb in recovery mode.
Going forward, certain tutorials and methods may only be applicable to one method and not the other, or will provide separate methods for each case. So maybe we need some new terminology.
Original root method using fastboot = "boot-rooted"?
New root method using adb in recovery mode = "rec-rooted"?
Feel free to get more imaginative.
Good idea. But are there any differences between the two methods other than the locked bootloader thing?

Well one thing I notice is that some of the modding threads (e.g. how to restore your Nexus One to stock) contain instructions that involve Fastboot. I'm assuming that if your bootloader is still locked, you won't be using Fastboot to accomplish this step.
I believe you can still use PASSIMGs on a locked bootloader,so some of those guides could still work on a rec-rooted Nexus.
How about fast-root and hacked-root?

Sounds Good...it has my vote
Fast-root works...
Hacked-root I'm not sure about - cause really, both methods are pretty hacktastic
How about true-root and lazy-root?
In any case, functionality of the root access is still the same - the only difference is whether your bootloader is unlocked or not. I don't think two different terminologies are required - a tutorial can just have two sections; one for people having unlocked bootloader, and other for locked.
I dont see why it makes a difference but
oem-root for fastboot oem unlock
and
sd-root for the sdcard loop one (hmm sounds like it could be confused with sd root directory)
or
loop-root

considering that those with unlocked bootloaders can use the same method as those with locked loaders, i think the unroot tut itself should be changed to use the PASSIMG.zip
theres no need to go through all the hassle of doing a nandroid restore imo

Help I keep getting fail boot 2

I'm new to rooting phones I have a Moto Photon 4G. Ido have root access but when i try to boot into Android Recovery i get a message saying fail boot 2 entering RSD mode. So I'm not able to flash any roms to my phone. It's getting frustrating I have used google to find a solution but I'm a NOOB haha so I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. Please can anyone help?
Have you unlocked it? Can't do much without unlocking and installing a custom recovery.
If not, start here.
I'm pretty sure it's unlocked but how can I be sure. I used Root check basic and it confirmed I do have root accsess.
Root and unlocking are two separate processes. When you boot the phone, if you're unlocked, it will say unlocked in the upper left on the screen with the red m.

Now click your start menu and type "cmd", right click the cmd program and copy it to your unlock pack directory.
i'm not sure how to copy it.
Open the newly copied cmd.exe and type "fastboot oem unlock xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" WITHOUT THE " " MARKS and replaces the x's with your code that you got from the above step.
The links were helpful but some are outdated or my comp says they contain malware and wont allow me to proceed any further and yes qbking77 has very helpful videos

Once the cmd.exe comes up in your start menu, right click it and choose "copy." Then open your unlock pack directory (where you unzipped the unlock pack zip file) and right click, then choose "paste." Then double click the pasted cmd.exe. I'm not sure what has you stuck exactly.

You need to unlock your phone and flash CWM in order to put a custom rom on it. Rooting it is he easy stuff. If you flash a custom rom 99.5% of the time it is pre rooted so...
I have tried that method with no success. Thanks for your help
You have to use RSD-lite to flash the stock phone rom back onto your phone before you can unlock it.
I did the same thing you did when I first tried to load a custom rom, and many other people here have done the same thing as well, we have all gotten through it. It took me about 5 hours of trying to get everything straightened out, and the next day I was running overclocked CM7 with jokers kernel.

[Q] note 2 toolkit

I am using the exploit from Chainfire for root and want to use the Note 2 toolkit. I see it says you must have an unlocked bootloader to use toolkit.I also see the post by Adam to unlock it but have no idea where to start since the video contradicts the OP itself with the files indicated.
Is there a link to simply change the bootloader for Verizon?
Thanks

Previously, we used toolkit to unlock, root, and flash custom recovery. The ability to unlock the device was the huge benefit of using toolkit. However, toolkit cannot unlock the bootloader if there is a restriction on it. Adam is the first person who unlock the bootloader successfully (he's our savior!!!). It seems like as of right now, we can only unlock the device manually via Adam's method. So the toolkit doesn't do the huge deal for us, and it's pretty much useless.

[Q] Bootloader

¿How to know if my bootloader is locked? I searched on the hidden menu and found nothing but the bootloader version. I'm looking forward to unlock it so i can root and do stuff.

I'm not sure it's the easiest way but you can go to fastboot with method wrote here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221102. But first you will have to flash jb V20* ROM. If you have first screen where you are asked if you want to unlock bootloader = locked. If second screen with quick guidance = unlocked.
WARNING! Be careful if you don't want to unlock bootloader watch which button you press.
You still didn't answer his question. I would like to know as well. Is there a way to tell if my bootloader is unlocked or locked?

As far as I know, not every phone comes with a bootloader closed unless some phones are able to change roms and stuff without needing to open this.
If your on JB, just go to the dialer and type 3845#*760# then scroll to the bottom to bootloader unlock check. (if you have differernt L9 - 3845#*7xx# - your numbers)
Another way to check is to go to software update mode by switching off the phone then holding volume up while inserting the USB cable. If your bootloader is unlocked, it will say so in the top corner of the S/W update screen.
If you havnt unlocked it, it will be locked by default.

[Q] Xperia X10a, confusion about the bootloader, and its ability to be unlocked

I have an x10a, and I have for a while. But, its getting old, and boring. I wanted to spice it up with a custom ROM, namely Cyanogenmod. But going through the steps, xflashtool doesn't seem to want to play ball, informing me that "Your phone bootloader cannot be officially unlocked".
I've flashed it before, but only back to stock. This time I want something new.
Now, I've googled around and I've found a few pieces of information about this, but nothing concrete, and certainly nothing very in-depth.
I need to know;
- Does this mean that my attempts at a custom ROM are just at a halt completely? Too bad for me, try a different phone?
- If not, can I force the bootloader to be unlocked, and will it remove my ability to use the radio capability in the phone? (as I have read in a few places now), because my phone isn't a lot of good without the ability to do phone things.
- If I can force it, how, and are there any downsides?
and bonus round;
- Why are there certain phones that just can't have the bootloader unlocked.
Cheers in advance guys, I'd really like to hear some good news about this, but anything is better than what I have at this point.

My X10i is carrirer locked, and I could unlock the boot loader without any problems.
The problem with those who lose their radio capability, is, as I suspect it to be, because they tried SIM-unlock their devices with third party methods in a way that are not supposed to be done. (A "bad" hack method of some kind). Once they unlock the boot loader, they lose that poor third party hack, and the device reverts back to a SIM-locked state. Since most of the people who do SIM-unlock their devices, uses a different carrier, will also lose the radio because of the carrier/SIM lock.
One can safely unlock the boot loader if:
* The device remains SIM-locked and haven't been touched by poor, unknown SIM-lock hacks.
* The device isn't SIM-locked in the first place. (Device was delivered in an unlocked state)
* The device is SIM-unlocked with the proper method, where one get proper unlock codes from their original carrier matched with the IMEI code.

My phone was delivered locked to... Vodaphone? I think. I unlocked it a long time ago. But, I unlocked it by given them my IMEI, and getting the unlock code from them. So, as legit as it gets really. I am still not allowed to just unlock my bootloader. Based on what I've seen in this thread, and a couple of other places, if I force the bootloader to unlock by "less sturdy" means, I should be fine with my sim-unlock, or be able to just contact them again and get a new unlock code.
So, this Testpoint method that TakuyaZ mentioned, anyone able to point me in the right direction for that or an alternative? I can't seem to find a decent tutorial anywhere.

What method did you try to unlock the bootloader with? As far as I know your SIM-unlocked status shouldn't be affected at all, as it is properly unlocked, with the radio accepting all carriers. (Radio part of the device is semi-isolated from the rest of the system)
Try this method, and you should be fine: (But I cannot promise anything. If you do try it, you're on your own.)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253277
It's the method I used on a few X10i devices. Works on SIM-locked devices (They'll remain SIM-locked after, as it should be), as well as unlocked devices that previosly has been SIM-locked, but unlocked with the proper codes from the carrier. They remained SIM-unlocked after unlocking the boot loader. Good news that is.
So if you really know that your device has been properly SIM-unlocked with codes delivered from the carrier that locked the device in the first place, you should be fine. A.f.a.i.k, the only ones that lost their radio on their devices, are the ones who used improper third party hacking methods to SIM-unlock their devices.
Warning: If you are not 100% sure about what method that has been used to SIM-unlock your device. Stop. And turn back.

Did you try with Flashtool? Don't use the newest version, you need 0.9.10 release. From http://androxyde.github.io/ There is a thread on here some where ill inbox you the link if I find it.
But it is easy as to do. By memory I think you click the padlock in flashtool to root phone then click on the plugins and you have the option to unlock boot loader with a click. Not sure if you have to add recovery first? Get the older version of flashtool though.

The only things needed on the X10 part is it to have original (Stock) firmware with Android 2.1 or 2.2, with the original 2.6.29 kernel.
Also one need to enable debugging over USB (Debug Bridge) in the developer settings. And lastly need the drivers installed if using Windows. (Which I assume is the case here)
Once that's done, it should all work.
I've written a Linux script if anyone needs it. Still need the other files from the original qsd8250.7z toolset from the_laser's thread. See attached files.
Place qsd8250_semc.bash in the same director as qsd8250_semc.cmd, then execute it.
One also need Linux-version of the adb command, and in the system PATH variable.
