Slow video camera in cyanogenmod 11. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed cyanogenmod 11 on my S3 using cm installer. Everything worked fine until I used the camera one day. I wanted to record a video and found that my phone recorded video only at 15fps in 1080p. So I returned back to touchwiz. Did anyone have the same problem?

Samsung uses closed source hardware drivers for specific functions such as the camera the WiFi and on Note series the pen and gesture features. Since the drivers are closed source Cyanogenmod can't use them so they use an alternative open source drivers, and that doesn't always work, and sometimes works with unsatisfying results. That's why CM is not 100% Stable on Samsung devices.

Any ROM based on Android 4.x with Video record working at least the same as on stock?

Hi,
Is there any ROM based on Android 4.x which has Video recording not lagging? The same level of performance as on stock will be quite enough for me... No lagging while video playback would be also nice to have. I have tried Jokersax cm9 and cm10 and both didn't have these things working. Anyway, I would like to thank Jokersax and his work done to offer community the newest fancy stuff .
Or there's a common issue with drivers which prevents having video recording working stable in any ROM on Android 4.x? Is there any other option rather than waiting for official Android ICS release for MoPho?
Thank in advance for replying.

there's no drivers available for us to use for ICS/JB. so everything is hacked to kinda work. in this case it means lots of 2d related things don't work. video recording for example. JB is quite jittery at times. all due to lack of drivers.
if you want a stable rom with everything working. use a gingerbread rom.

CM7 by JOKERSAX is definately the best option for the most stable opperating system in my eyes, no offence to other builds or devs.
the cm10 version is running great for me after doing very small mods to get it working. I DO HAVE WORKING VIDEO ON CM10!!
The video illusions is the only video camera app ive had that works well and dosnt seem to run verry slow.. i had to disable HWA on the gallery and on the camera and the video cam app to reduce jitter and FC. but CM10 or any AOKP seems to be verry solid, i love to run AOKP JB roms from time to time to switch things up, THEBILL has a great selection to offer, jump to page 1 on any build to see what is still broken (borked?)
but the issue is that the drivers are hacked up from gingerbread and this is the best it will be + a few mods to improve quality until the release of ICS comes out, big hopes now with the photon Q being out and running ics/Jb
GOOD LUCK
let me know if i helped any!!

The front camera on SM10.1 not available on Skype.

Good afternoon.
After installing the latest build of CM 10.1 [26.05.2013] I lost the ability to use the front camera in Skype and other applications. On [CM10] [PA] [22.01.2013] M10 everything worked perfectly. Can you fix it like?

Google Camera - Photosphere

Is there any ROM in which Google Camera photosphere works?
In all I tested so far the images in photosphere are blurry.
Regular images are ok.
Same problem here...
I have the same problem. When you talk about Google Camera, did you tried original app that is not visible in the Google Play search (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.GoogleCamera) or Cardboard Camera that is returned when I search Google Play store for Google Camera (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.vr.cyclops) . Google Camera works much better but not ideal
Google Camera works for me in general.
4K Video does not work (not important to me, other app can be used)
Photosphere is blurry (big issue for me, since there is no alternative)
I also tried the photosphere coming from Google Streetview - it has exactly the same issue, blurry results.
My assumption is that the issue originates somehow from drivers coming with CM/Lineage.
Since this issue exists also on other phones. E.g Note 3: There it works with stock, but not on the majority of custom ROMs.
Exception on Note 3 is the Resurrection ROM. It works fine there.
Unfortunately Resurrection does not help on LeMax.
Same problem here with Marshmallow and EUI 23s.
I don't think there's a way to fix this

Ported google camera cannot focus

I'm currently using LineageOS 16.0 as my rom, and I've tried many different google camera ports from different developers and all of them can't seem to work properly. It cannot keep the track of focus in the camera mode. So when I tap the screen it will try to focus but it will remain blurry. But the video mode works fine, it focuses properly. This problem only happens when I'm using the ported google camera, so the stock camera and other camera applications works normally. Where did the problem came from and what should I do to solve the problem?
Sorry for bad english, still learning
new Kernel might fix as It did for me 2 times.

Hardware Decoder help?

I'm hoping someone could help me with a video problem I'm having. I use my Touchpad mostly as a wall mounted tablet to display a security camera. I'm currently using the Evervolv 7.1.2 Android Nougat Rom which I love and it works so smooth! However, when using the Wyze Labs app that goes with my cameras and also when trying the Tiny Cam Pro app, when trying to enable Hardware Decoder in the apps for video, it fails. It forces me to use the software decoder instead, which works, but is laggy and stutters at times.
I also tried the LineageOS 14.1 Android Nougat 7.1.2 by invisiblek Rom and had the exact same issue.
HOWEVER.... When using the Dirty Unicorns v8.1 Android Oreo by Flintman Rom, the hardware decoder works in both apps with that Rom, but the Touchpad doesn't run nearly as quick and smooth for me as it does with Evervolv 7.1.2
Does anyone have any idea on how to get the hardware decoder to work in either 7.1.2 Rom.
By the way, I'm also using the Max Extreme optimize 1782 if that makes any difference.

I can not test those Apps as I do not have any way to connect to any security cameras. I do know that the Tablet's video recording capabilities is better with Oreo and Pie.
It maybe the Kernel or the Android ROMs for those version. Did you try setting the Tablet as posted on this guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hp-touchpad/general/hp-touchpad-optimize-android-swap-t3901773
You mentioned the use of MaXtreme, but did you flash Oreo or Pie using ROM Reducer and also the 1836 Speed?
All ROMs have the same settings applied at the Kernel level and should perform very similar.

I think it may have something to do with the MaXtreme. I tried several ROMs over the weekend in all sorts of combos, some with the ROM reducer and also with the 1836 speed. Anyway, last night I tried one more time with the DU 13 Pie ROM and the hardware decoder worked with both apps. However, after I got it running, I flashed the MAX_1836_CPU_Universal_Optimize_Swap Zip that goes with that ROM and the Hardware decoder stopped working again on both apps. After a quick dirty flash of the ROM without the MaX_1836 , HW Decoder came back. I haven't tried Rom Reducer yet on this ROM, but I may just leave it as is since I'm really only using this particular tablet as a wall mounted display, so as long as it works to display the cameras reliably, I don't need the tablet do work well with anything else.
Thanks for the reply!

All the optimized Kernels improve the CPU frequency ( overclock ) with the most fastest possible settings. But it does not disable or remove any features.

It is great to know that is working one way or the other and that is what's so great about the Tablet, many different options available that still makes it usable!

Out of curiosity I installed the Tiny Cam App using Evervolv 7.1.2 ( ROM Reducer) with MaXtreme 1836.
Attached are the screenshot that shows H.264/H.265 decoder is available . I do not know why it does not work for you, but it should work for everyone.
Click HERE for the Installation Guide
Also I use Evervolv 7.1.2 with the same set up to record and playback video in 2592x1944 resolution over WiFi.

The decoder shows as available however, when I enabled either Hardware or Hardware+ and then connect to a live camera stream, a message pops up that says something like "Hardware Decoder H264 has failed, Switching to Software decoder" Then the camera video plays using the software decoder. That works. but lags 15 seconds and skips. In the Wyze app which is by the camera manufacturer, Enable Hardware decoder is an option in the app account menu. When enabled, the camera does connect, but the video is just a black screen along with the counting bitrate. It does play with hardware decoder switched off. With the Wyze app, lot's of Android devices, especially older devices need the hardware decoder because without it, the live video lags like 20 seconds and stutters. There were tons of complaints on the Wyze forums for a while when Wyze temporarily removed the hardware decoder option due to some change in Android about a year ago.

In Hardware Decoder the GPU will be doing the work, in Software it will be the CPU. The codec is very important when it comes to playback.
I have found the MX Player App is the best to play videos. I downloaded a video to test from this site:
https://www.appsloveworld.com/sample-hd-video-download/
Tested on Evervolv 7.1.2 and Pie with the same results, the attached screenshots are of 7.1.2. In both Tablets the MaXtreme is use as it provides the fastest CPU.
Not all videos, or streams are encoded the same or using a codec that will work using the GPU ( Hardware plus decoder ). It gets complicated and specially on this old device.
If the wrong encoding option is selected then it will not play, but software using the CPU will work. Using the highest CPU frequency the Tablet can handle should help with software decoder.
