Google Now Long Press - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

For some reason long pressing the menu button on my s4 brings up my recent apps as opposed to Google now on my s4. I'm unrooted, completely stock. This feature used to work. Haven't had the kitkat update as I'm on Verizon. Anyone else have this problem?

That's the intended behaviour. It comes like that when stock.
I think Google Now should be swipe up from bottom of screen; not sure as I've never installed it.

So, your S4 behaves differently than your S4. That's weird.
Seriously, that's how it's supposed to work. Go into Google Now, settings/help, where it's explained. Long press home is on Google Play edition phones (swipe up is for Nexus phones).

Ok, but I have googled this all over the place. Other people on other forums say the same. Long Press menu brings up Google Now. Additionally, my phone used to do this until last week.

Have you tried a factory reset? Since you're not rooted, that should reset everything... but there's also the full-wipe MK2 Odin tar to really reset everything.

No, long press menu should bring it up. Looks like you might have to factory reset your phone OP. It doesn't even work on the homescreen?

LOL. Who is Google to contradict your expertise?
To open Google Now, follow the steps for your device:
Android 4.1+ devices: Touch the Google Search bar at the top of the screen. You may be able to swipe up from the bottom of the screen on certain devices.
Nexus devices: Swipe up from the bottom of any screen.
Nexus 5: Swipe to the leftmost Home screen.
Google Play edition devices: Touch & hold your phone's Home button.

Did you even read what you posted? That's for nexus and gpe devices. The Samsung S4 on stock Touchwiz is not either of those things.

Let me simply point out your lack of reading comprehension:
"Android 4.1+ devices: Touch the Google Search bar at the top of the screen. You may be able to swipe up from the bottom of the screen on certain devices."

The S4 is an "Android 4.1+ device," and it works exactly as described.
But if you knew how to read, you could download the user manual for the phone, and discover how Samsung says it works:
Home: Press to display the Home screen, or Lock screen if the device is locked. Press and hold to display recent applications or launch Task Manager or Google Search.
Click to collapse
...which again confirms that the OP's phone (and my own, which is running "rooted" stock) is working as both Google and Samsung describe.
But, maybe you like the taste of crow, since you've asked for a second serving.

Really whipping out the manual? Lol in the section you're referring to, it also doesn't mention that long pressing the back key toggles the multiwindow tab. It's not a complete guide to those functions.

Voice Search Missing!

Where did the voice search shortcut go? It would have been nice if a long press on the recent apps button brought up voice search. When I'm driving, I want to be able to "call home", or " "navigate to Best Buy". I tried to create a shortcut, but the voice search is not a app or widget, so I have no easy way to get there without multiple steps.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
I noticed this too :/ I use the Dragon Go! assistant app and it has the same problem.. The quickest way to get to it is to use the google search widget. It's voice button gets you straight to it.

Yes, that's what I've been doing. Just wish there was a voice search only widget so I could put it on my home screen and not clutter it up, or a long press on the useless recent apps button.
Also, where did the Sound Hound app go? I can create a shortcut, but if I go to the apps area, it's not there! Tried to uninstall and reinstall market Sound Hound and you can't! Total garbage!

I've been looking for this shortcut (soundhound) and a couple others that seemed to disappear from the all apps drawer. The program is listed as installed, but you can't start it easily! This is what I found posted:

I modded mine to use the focus button on the camera (half press of the camera button). Whenever you're not in the camera app, hold it at half press, and voice actions pops up. I'm putting it into a zip right now, link to follow.
I'm sending ian in here to help u all out, he make a key remmaping the focus button to voice actions
Ok, after a long (LONG) day. I've got the zip, and I've managed to get it uploaded. This just makes the focus key (half press of the camera button), act as the search key, outside of the camera app. Hope you like it. Thank ticklemepinks appropriately for getting me to post this

There's a way to bring back the "Voice Search" shortcut. I have it on my dock right now.
Someone at AndroidCentral created a thread about it, but since I don't have that many posts right now to send you guys the link, here are the instructions:
1) Download "QuickShortcutMaker" from the Play Store.
2) Launch QuickShorcutMaster.
3) Do a search for "Voice Search" and you'll get a list of Voice Search Activities.
4) Select the one that has "RecognitionActivity" in the description.
5) Select OK.
6) The "Voice Search" shortcut should now appear on your Home screen.

Thanks for posting this, but since it's not an apk, and I don't think it's a kernel file, I don't actually know what I'm supposed to do with this zip. For the record, I tried changing the extension to apk and that didn't allow it to be installed. My evo is a stock, unrooted one at present.

You have to flash the file via custom recovery. Not something you can accomplish completely stock.

Ah, okay, I just got the phone yesterday and haven't installed any custom recovery yet. I should probably get on that. I ended up with an evo3d on 1.50, and therefore wasn't able to take advantage of such niceties. Thanks for letting me know.
You you possibly map it to a long press of the recent apps key? That would be more practical, think the half press of the camera key would happen too easily.

Gallery app thumb nail question

Is there anyway to dismiss the row of thumbnails once you're inside an album in the gallery app?
I remember those thumbnails used to go away once you tap on a picture on the S3, but now they're there all the time.
Swipe to the left?

I misunderstood your post then.
Initially you see a list of albums, then once you go in the album you see the column on the left. Swiping to the left gets rid of that.
But once you go into a picture, you see the row you're talking about.
On my phone it disappears after 3-4 seconds, or when I do a single tap in the middle of the picture for example.

I see, from your signature, that you have a Note 2, and the behavior that you're describing is the expected one. The row of index should go away once you've tapped on the picture, or it'll go away after a few seconds. I've had many android devices, and all of them do that, except on my S4. So I was wondering if there's any way to resolve it.

I see... may I ask if you have flashed any ROM? I'm on Hyperdrive RLS2, maybe that's the problem.
Hi,I linked the thread that I started asking the same question, on page 1. I am on Hyperdrive and this is happening to me, so maybe it is the problem?
For me though, doesnt really matter anymore as I have bought Camera and Gallery JB+, which are superior (other than losing a few of the Samsung app features). These replace the stock apps and act just as the normal JB apps. No issues like this exist that I can see.
Maybe grab the gallery apk from the stock ROM if you are also running Hyperdrive ROM, but that may or may not fix the issue.
Also, if you use the stock gallery and camera apps, they will be cut off and weird looking if you happen to decrease your DPI in the build.prop like I did (I just went from 480 to 460 and even that causes a column of gallery albums to get cut off). Again, using Gallery JB+ fixed this for me as well.

Do you have Lightflow or an app that needs accessibility access? Then that might be the culprit. I deselected Lightflow and my gallery app could go full screen without having the top and bottom bars. It's a Tradeoff if we want to use those apps.

I remember reading somewhere on these forums that Lightflow activates the Talkback feature. Then that got me thinking when I selected multiple photos and I heard the talkback speak. I thought that Lightflow could be the problem and tried it out and boom. I received my answer.

[Q] Gmail App - No "Settings" button?

Hello All,
I upgraded the GMail app on my One to the latest version and I noticed that there is no longer a 'Settings' button on the menu bar. On other phones (i.e Samsung S3 or S4) you could press the Menu soft button on the phone and click SETTINGS but the One doesn't have the soft key for Menu. I've attached an image of what I'm referring to. I know this it the old version, but just used it for reference.
Any idea how to get to Settings in the Gmail app now?

So turns out this isn't really Google's fault, it's HTC's. Somehow HTC decided to design this wonderful phone but not include a Menu button. I don't know how this got by designers and approved by HTC but it's a negative for The One, IMO. Don't get me wrong I love the phone, but this is plain silly.
So, in order to get your 'Settings' back (and any other 'menu' function) in the gmail app, you need to install a ROM that has an option to modify one of the soft keys to for 'Long Press = Menu". I personally am using CleanRom. This let's me use a long press on the 'Home' button to activate the Menu options. This will work with any other app on the phone also.

menu button show in 4.4.2

why is it appears after update to 4.4.2 ?
how do i cancel it ?
thank you!
That is the way it's meant to be on android, the only reason it was missing was because people weren't used to it. The reason is galaxy phones with their crappy hardware buttons, considering you have onscreen navigation keys this button is equal essential and easy to use.
Is the onscreen menu button still present in 4.4.2 or is it replaced by recent activity?
Is there a way to remove it?
It's now stock to show all the time on Android 4.4 it's Google way to force company's to get rid of menu buttons and use Google. Which I Perfer since I hate menu buttons but love the three dots

Is that chrome you are on ??
Even if google forced it to be, it wont be there on the native browser.
Chrome is exclusively a Google product so all the changes will be present in the latest versions.
