Can't enter flash mode - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I did something really stupid, my volume down button doesn't work 90% of the time. However i was stubborn with a workaround i was able to get in flashmode. Started pc companion and flashtool and prepared flashtool, then did recovery trough pc companion. As soon the phone rebooted i ended pc companion and flashtool took over. Everything fine till then.
I rooted, installed ZU-lockeddualrecovery2.7.117-BETA recovery. Then trough recovery I flashed chemcup his .757 firmware. Flash went ok, then the next step is to go to flashtool and flash the stipped ftf (kernel and baseband). And here things went wrong, very wrong.
I can't acces flashmode, mun volume down button now really stopped working. Tried for 10 hours, but not working.
Obviously the device won't boot, so pc companion can't help me. Recovery isn't working, or at least the screen isn't working. When i acces recovery the screen goes black but i do have adb. I also can go to fastboot. At the moment i'm really really stuck, i hope somebody can give me a push in the right direction.
In short, no flashmode, adb and fastboot working

I'm not at a pc so can't check or create anything, but here are my thoughts, are you on a locked BL?
Get a stock kernel and flash in fastboot?
Get a kernel/recovery and flash that then get a flashable zip with kernel and baseband - I think someone should be able to create this for you
I hope these thoughts help

Do you have a NAND backup or anything? I'm assuming you want to go back to stock now so you can send it in for repairs or something? You have a working ADB and Fastboot, so you can flash kernels and stuff like that, but have you tried "adb reboot bootloader"?

I'm on locked bootloader,
I don't now how to extract the kernel from a tft and convert to a boot.img. The only boot.img i found was from doomlord, that one didn't flash....locked bootloader i suppose.
If somebody does have a flashable zip that would be awesome

I have something in my dropbox, if i'm remember correctly... When there is live back in the sony i think its the right time to send it in for repairs.
adb reboot bootloader is working, it brings me to fastboot. If i only knew the command for flashmode, there must be one. Do you know if the is a trick with a usb connector with a certain resistance soldered into. In my old acer and lg i could enter flashmode with a certain usb cable.

You have access to Fastboot, so flash a different kernel with Recovery, and see where that takes you. If you get the phone booting again, you can buy DoomLord's "Xperia Reboot" app for around $2, which is totally worth it at this point, and use it to boot into Flashmode. You can see the Flashmode option on one of the screenshots.
This is pretty much your only hope at this point, so good luck!

I think you should be able to flash a .sin kernel from a FTF in fastboot with flashtool, that should get you booting I think
Then do a PCC repair and send in for servicing? or will that want flashmode?

Just back from the nightshift, so i can start trying again.
Fastboot won't allow me to flash kernel, my bootloader is locked. And at this moment i feel like unlocking can make at this moment things worse.

ITS ALIVE!!!
Finally it's alive!
Yesterdad it was alive for a bit, trough adb i manually flashed the LB recovery from NUT. Just used his script only entered each command trough adb.
So i had a full recovery by then, then i got really brave........ In short, i did exactly the same thing as mentioned in the OP. To make things worse, made a mistake with flashing manually the recovery.... recovery was gone...
My last option was to unlock, flashed jackie his kernel, and all is working again. My son can have his TAB2 back, i'm back in business:laugh:

Please, I'm stuck where you were, may you please give me the script you are talking about so I can use in fastboot, fastboot is all I can access. Phone will not boot to flashmode.

please share the script & steps that fixed your z ultra. mine is dead from last 1 months because my volume down key is not working please share the script

Phone doesn't boot after unlocking bootloader.

Hey,
I just unlocked the bootloader of a Xperia Neo MT15 (.69 firmware) using the testpoint method. Everything worked fine, the device identified as 'r...', I can get in fastboot and execute commands. Executing 'fastboot boot recoveryNeo.img' exits normally with download ... okay, booting..., but no new devices (like adb interface) appear, I tried several times.
But, what is worse, I can't boot the phone regularly, the screen is constantly black. After 'fastboot reboot' or removing battery and plugging in USB cable, the green LED goes on and a 'SEMC Flash Device' appears after a few seconds the LED goes off and the device vanishes. Pressing the power button causes the phone to vibrate shortly but nothing else happens.
Any idea how to get the phone working again. Thanks million times in advance for any help.
Regards!

Thanks megatpanji. Do I have to use a different Kernel? Isn't it possible to use the Stock kernel?
I followed the progress as for example described here for the Xperia Arc but I found similar descriptions for the Neo.
As I understood the progress after unlocking fastboot is open and I can hot-boot a recovery image. From where, in turn, I can push su using adb or install it from zip. Isn't that right? I'd like to understand what exactly went wrong or if I just misunderstood the progress.
why messing so much. use flashtool to flash any custom kernel. then boot into recovery (CWM), place your custom rom zip on sd card, and flash via recovery.
if wanting stock rom, then use flashtool to flash stock ftf file.

actually I tried messing up as little as possible As I said, at the moment, I'd just like to root the stock rom.
As the .69 firmware is unrootable and I did not mess up anything by downgrading I decided to use the method for unlocked bootloaders, which took me only a few minutes. Everything worked perfectly except the last step. The phone does neither boot normally nor in recovery.
Guess I'll have to begin searching a new kernel.
Nevertheless I would love to understand what went wrong so that I will not make the same error again in the future. Especially why the phone appears as "SEMC Flash Device" and shuts down shortly after it again.
i think, the kernel doesnt support the rom. you were on stock rom, so you must use stock based kernel.

well but I didn't flash any new kernel, did I? I only executed
Code:
fastboot boot recoveryNeo.img
As I understood this does not flash anything but does only hotboot into the recovery.
recoveryNeo.img is the kernel . this code is used to flash kernels

well and what is than the following for?
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
I thought flashing writes the image to NAND while hot-booting boots from the image without changing the flash memory.
Isn't this the case?
uh :\ m mad ! maybe you are righht. i never used all this. but the boot loops you are getting is related to kernel only. maybe corrupted
So after all I tried flashing the kernel from the 4.0.2.A.0.62 ftf, which did not fix the problem. Then I relocked bootloader and flashed everything (except data wipe) and just as I thought it didn't work neither the phone booted and after some further 5 long minutes of trembling (while the phone refills the wiped cache) the phone turned on as always.
One possible reason for the trouble might be that the battery was almost fully discharged although as I started hacking it was at about 70%. Seems the phone discharged heavily over night. I guess I'll charge the phone now and will try again some other day.

how to install cwm on xperia go on jelly bean?

I've tried to look around, and the only method I seem to find is to flash back to ics, root, then install it. But is there a way to install it on jelly bean without going back to ics?
I had successfully rooted my go before, but that was with bin4ry's easy root exe. I kinda regretted not installing cwm sooner when I was still rooted in ICS. I also have no idea how to fast boot on this phone, I read a guide before, but my phone goes into charging mode before I get to click anything.

OK last night I was stuck at step 13, but just this morning for some reason, my phone went on fastboot mode, and the computer automatically installed the drivers. Now that it's on fastboot, I tried moving on to step 14-15, this is where I get stuck again... It says open a cmd within the sdk folder, and enter the command on step 15, I get the message, "fastboot.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command." I checked both tools, and platform-tools, they both have fastboot.exe. what am I missing? I extracted the adt-bundle on my desktop if that helps.

Put the boot.img in platform-tools and open a command window from there (shift+rclick on empty spot > open command window from here)
Then try fastboot again. Should work with or without .exe
PS. How did you get this far with the steps and have fastboot not work if you went through unlocking bootloader?

Fastboot was already working, I just need to unlock the bootloader. How the fastboot driver installed, I have no idea, maybe it was when I restarted my pc this morning that sorted things out. The computer found the driver by itself for some reason. Another thing that probably help was when I pressed the volume up button by itself, and not with the power button.

So I tried looking around the forums for another method on unlocking the bootloader. And I tried the SE bootloader unlocker. It seemed to me it worked in unlocking the bootloader although I still don't know how to confirm, since I still get the error on my previous post. I tried moving on and flash the boot.img and I started to get the 4 flashing colors, but I'm a bit confused on step 5 and 6 in installing cwm. And I get the flashing colors everytime I restart my phone, is this normal? I'm not finish in installing cwm so that might be a reason.

4 flashing colors indicate boot.img was flashed successfully (because normal boot img doesn't do that). And you will be seeing that everytime while using this ROM. You should be able to boot to CWM by holding down vol- when it starts flashing and right after the vibrate. Keep it held til you see CWM. If that doesn't work, pop your question over there in that thread for OP to read.

I have a networked locked go (ST27i) on O2 network in the UK. The boot loader cannot be unlocked. I installed the latest generic firmware 6.2.A.1.100 via flashtool (to de-brand the O2 startup/shutdown sequence which slowed the phone a little). I rooted the phone via the DoomLoRD .bat exploit.
I have tried three versions of CWM from playstore and they all say they are incompatible with my device, so I cannot install it? As my bootloader cannot be unlocked I understand I cannot flash a custom kernel or use a custom rom.
I assume as the OP says (and after many hours reading), to install CWM recovery to a ST27i on the latest JB rom, you must flash the device from JB back to ICS, then install the CWM recovery/kernel. Then to flash the JB rom you do it through CWM and not via flash tool if you want to go back to JB, is that correct? Thus keeping the CWM recovery option on startup.
thanks in advance for any help with this!

You assumed it right. Installing CWM was actually quite easy, I was just not familiar with the steps provided on sony's website. Don't use the CWM from playstore, use the ones on this forum. Make sure the necessary files are installed, like ADB, and Android SDK tools, then install CWM through your PC with your phone connected on fastboot(Press volume up as you connect your phone). Replace the boot.img from the android platform-tools, with the boot.img from the CWM file you downloaded. Open command prompt inside platform-tools folder and type "fastboot flash boot boot.img " without the quote. When you see a bunch of numbers come up that means you have just successfully installed CWM, then type "fastboot reboot". If you see flashing colors during boot then that means you were successful. To go to CWM menu, wait for the led to flash then press volume down.

I cant think of a way to get a non booted ZU into flashmode
I do have one thought on how to fix this - flash a system partition dump in fastboot, It will take me a little time to make this for you
Edit:
I have to charge the c6802 up as it is flat then flash a FTF and extract the files and test, all while the wife if using the PC (she has 5 days left untill she has finished a double degree, and a separate research project on the go - I may not get the PC for a few hours)
It looks like fastboot won't open a full 2.3 GB system dump, so there goes that idea
Do you have any warranty on the device? if so the steps below will void you warranty - if you haven't already. It will also wipe all data and the DRM keys
Have you flashed any kernel/boot.img? if so then do the last steps (5, 6 & 7) as well to get on a kernel compatible with the GPe ROM
You will need the fastboot drivers installed (should be installed with flashtool) and you will need adb/fastboot (should be in the flashtool folder)
Get your unlock code from Sony's dev site, you will need the IMEI # in the tag in the sim bay
Open a command line in the flashtool folder that has adb and fastboot .exe files
Enter this command:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock <unlock_code_from_sony>
Download either scrubber's kernel or DooMLoRD's GPe kernel
Flash boot.img with (if not called boot.img change command below to match):
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img

Thank you guys for your help and i am really sorry for flooding and spamming the entire zu thread.
This is my first time to root (sony way) and own a sony mobile, i was a samsung user before and ive never experienced this kind of horrible situation in flashing roms. I just bought my phone 7 months a go and i was so worried. If my Volume (-) rocker wasnt broken i wouldnt experience this nightmare, but i was hoping maybe someone knows how to turn the phone into flashmode without pressing the volume(-), unfortunately nobody knows.
I brought my mobile to sony service center and i hope they can fix it as i told them my software broke down and i need them to flash to stock firmware.
Edit:
i just saw my first post and it say fastboot mode! LOL sorry again.
i have no problem with the fastboot mode. I was stucked at FLASHMODE!
volume (-) is broken!

If you do have a GPe DO NOT FLASH AN FTF it will result in a permanent hard brick. Look for DooMLoRD's return to stock thread in GPe development section, it will return you to stock 4.4.2 and then you can let it update from there.

I think what may be possible is flashing the 4.4.4 system IMG with fastboot. Maybe @egzthunder1 or @blueether will be nice enough to offer some better advice.

Is it bootlooping or just stuck?
You should be able to flash a 4.4.4 system image
Instructions would be:
Download system_4.4.4.7z from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2799423
Extract the system_4.4.4.img
Code:
fastboot flash system <path_to_system_4.4.4.img>

Its boot looping the boot animation over and over .
OK this is my first Sony phone, I'm sorta familiar with fast boot from my HTC days but its been along time
If I remember correctly I had to install android SDK and fast boot, do I need all the same in this case?
Like i said its been along time and i would be thankfull for any and all instruction given ...

OK thanks yea I'm really lost, I've been searching and I can't find any instruction on this.
Is this even possible with a locked boot loader?

Again I apologize for posting without refreshing my memory by looking up the older threads. There was two issues with my first post.
1. Stock recovery will not allow flashing older firmware as I mentioned.
2. There is an edited ota zip but it needs to be flashed with custom recovery, which I believe can only be used with an unlocked bootloader.
Hopefully fastboot flashing the system img does the trick.

Easiest way to get the drivers may to download flashtool and grab them from the drivers folder.

Yes Windows 8 is a pain, Google for "disable driver signature verification in Windows 8" and see if that helps.

You need the whole path ex. C:\user\icotulookn\downloads\4.4.4 system img.
I am positive I found the file and was able to copy and paste the path into adb, not sure if that works for fastboot.

I havent used windows (if I can help it) for near 15 years but something like
fastboot flash system C:\system_4.4.4.img
"remote:command not allowed" is probably because of the locked BootLoader, I thought that may happen
Do you know what the fole you deleted was? you may be able to adb push it back onto the system if the GPe boots far enough.
The only other options I can think of are:
Ask Sony for a singed update.zip of the full 4.4.4 (no patch files) so it can be flashed by the stock recovery
Or use adb to do an oem unlock* - but this will wipe DRM keys and render the camera without auto focus
* You could try and run TA backup, but I think it will fail to gain root to do the back up... can you get shell access to the device? "adb shell"
Gonna suggest something off the left field, but if you have access to stock recovery... Have you tried doing a full wipe? I mean, unless ypu royally messed something up elsewhere, flashing system would give you the same end result as a full wipe.
Hopefully this helps.

Some things I am wondering.
1. Can 5.0 update be flashed in stock recovery or would.it fail due to missing files?
2. Can a kernel with recovery be hotbooted to flash the edited 4.4.2 ota?
3. Can the 4.4.4 system img be flashed with flashtool?
4. Is there a fastboot command similar to "adb devices" that will confirm it is connected properly?
I swear that I had the same error trying to return GPe to stock using WIN 8.1 laptop, on WIN 7 desktop it worked fine.

1. Yes it can but you need to place the zip file in a folder that recovery will recognize (/cache or /sd)
2. Technically yes. However, you still need to be unlocked for that AFAIK.
3. I don't see why not
4. Flashtool will confirm if you have a properly connected devices
There are two rules in life for being successful:
1. Never reveal everything you know;
2.

Z2, Can't boot into recovery, no LED lights.

Hi, i've had my Z2 two years now and I've rooted, UB and installed roms on it many times but for some reason I can't get into recovery anymore. I flashed a different ROM a few months ago to try get it back to stock but since then, no recovery!
I've flashed the TWRP 1 click installer (only seems to work on laptop, on PC I get waiting for device but it says it worked on laptop) but still I can't get into a recovery to flash a custom rom.
Any ideas? How do I get recovery back? Please be a bit simple with me, i've googled it and just get overwhelmed by the info so figure I should ask and find out what actually applies to me..
Thanks.
David
If you have flashed a stock rom, you probably have locked your bootloader, try this (hope you have done a TA backup the first time you unlocked the BL...):
Download the Androplus kernel in development section, unzip it.
Then, download and use flashtool (install the drivers if need them) to unlock your BL again (BLU button).
Once you have unlocked it, disconnect the phone from the computer BUT DON'T BOOT IT.
Close and reopen flashtool, and select fastboot mode from flashtool and use the kernel flash option.
Select the boot.img you have unzipped from androplus (change the file extension to .img), and your are done.
Disconnect, reboot and you will be able to access the TWRP recovery from the kernel when you see the led, then flash a stock based custom ROM (with recovery), or CM one, try to have one of them downloaded and placed into your ext-sdcard.
PLEASE! My English is not good enough to explain this in a better way, if you don't are familiar with flashtool, fastboot mode or you don't understand any of the steps, wait for a better explanation or read a lot about it BEFORE doing nothing.
PS. Your internal data probably will be lost, make a copy of all your photos, docs, etc. You can relock your BL if you choose a stock based custom rom like eXistenZ, just restoring your TA backup after flashing it.
have u try flash via adb fastboot? it's easier when u have UB, try erase it first, "fastboot erase recovery" then flash the img (the latest twrp img is available on their site) "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
