[Q] antivirus for android:is this really needed? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am a android (nexus 5) user. I dont have much idea of how that works. But, given that it uses linux kernel, i thought its safe from antivirus(AV).
Now, my banking app has a tag up with a antivirus(barclays and kaspersky). The AV makes my wi-fi drop frequently.
Though my banking app suggest I should use the AV, do I really need that, given the fact that, I only install apps from play store (but I do surf internet a lot, see pics and pdf from net)
I am confused.
Some advice is needed

[Q] App for intercepting data connections

Hi,
I thought maybe you guys, if anyone, would know. I am looking for an app that can:
- make a log of all the other apps, including stock ones, that make attempts or actual connections to the internet, and at what time
- be able to intercept those connections
- preferably I would create a white list of apps that are allowed to connect, but others do not have permission.
Purposes include:
- saving on bandwidth in poorer countries where internet is expensive.
- making sure apps or malware doesn't try to send off my data when it shouldn't be.
- prevent annoying background sync/apps from running when I don't want them
I find it strange that we either give all the permissions the app wants, or it doesn't work. Why can't we restrict their internet access?
Does this sound feasible? Does it already exist?
I'm rooted and using an Asus Transformer.
Thanks for any help
Try DroidWall. (root required)
It can block apps from connecting to the internet on an per-app based system.
But i don't think it has any kind of log or similar (haven't used it for a while, so might have been upgraded)
it looks like that does exactly what I needed, although I have to re-root my device for it to work again. Anyway, thanks for the tip
droidwall
droid wall definitely and yes it requires root.

[Q] Fake Internet Access to use online apps offline

I'm not interested in limiting the ability of an app to access the internet, there's enough ways to achieve that.
What I'm interested in is finding out if there is anyway to use an "online only" app while offline. Essentially is there a way to set up a fake access point using cached data to simulate being online? I'm looking to use a personal assistant such as google now without needing to blow through my extremely limited data plan that I'm grandfathered in on. Anyone know if such a thing is possible? I've not figured out the best way to phrase this question quite yet so let me know if it doesn't make sense.
Google Now simply won't work that way. I'd suggest you use something like utter! that doesn't actually send every command to Google (which requires internet access) to determine what to do with it.
Yeah I've been trying utter out of and on and I find it really drains my battery. That said its amazing for being in beta. I am actually keeping my fingers crossed for a more developed version of Indigo, I just like setting the cards on Google Now.

accessing U.S playstore in the middle east!?

hello guys i would like to know if it is possible to access the U.S playstore in the middle east on my s2 i9100, and whether it would work on other Android devices as well
i have used some VPN apps, but they just dont work for me it wont connect to the U.S servers.
is there anyone who can help me with this ,thanks in advance
Sounds like your carrier is blocking the VPN's, and if that is indeed the case, you're probably boned unless you find one which isn't blocked. Have you tried (A VPN) with a regular internet connection over WiFi (rather than over mobile data) to see if you can get around it that way ?
Have you tried US proxies ? (If you haven't, Google). From memory there are a number of apps which will 'proxify' any app that uses the internet (this can bit a bit hit or miss so far as whether an app will actually work this way or not though, like Orbot mentioned below). Also, keep trying VPN's; there are literally dozens (at least), if you want access to US GP badly enough, you'll try as many VPN's as you need to in order to achieve it. I know trying 5, 6, however many you've tried is a lot (and normally it would be), but you may have to try a lot more than that given your circumstances.
You could also try Tor; Orbot specifically - I have no idea whether GP will work specifically through Orbot in this way as I've never tried it (I do use it regularly on my phone for a bunch of other stuff though), theoretically it should though; any app that accesses the internet should be able to be made to route through Orbot/Tor; doesn't always work that way/easily though.
You'll need to manually configure Orbot to use a US exit node (which is relatively easy enough to do, Google for how to do this).
So...You can probably achieve this, but it depends on how motivated you are to do it. I understand a number of Middle Eastern countries impose all kinds of restrictions on the internet/telecoms, so based on what you've said, you're obviously going to have to work your way around them.
Edit - This page has instructions on how to configure Orbot to use exit nodes in a specific country only. Fairly simple. Again, whether it works or not, no idea as I've not tried it, but looks pretty straightforward.

What are your must-have/can't live without apps?

Aside from games, which apps can you not live without on your phone/tablet? I have numerous apps I use every day without fail...Some before I even get out of bed.
First port of call is always Gmail, quickly followed by a scan of Google+, Facebook and Twitter
Facebook, Twitter, and in China WeChat is the most popular, Sina Weibo is similar to Twitter (would be daily, but I'm not such an addict that I can't wait to get to my PC)
My favorite todo list manager is AnyDO and I use both the Android app and Chrome extension to manage my deadlines
Chrome, obviously The big daily apps for me...
There are several others that I frequently use, but are not quite daily for me.
Infrequently used, but occasionally invaluable
Quora for Q&A, read millions of fascinating answers about every subject
italki for language learning, communicate with people all around the world and learning by the way
I love having an Android phone. I would feel lost without it. So.... What are your must-have/can't live without apps?
Telegram. I'm using two unofficial Telegram clients for my dual SIM device though : Plus Messenger and Dgram.

You mean the "Telegram" is an app? I have never heard about it, I think it would be very useful for dual SIM and how to get it
Adguard, Lastpass and Outlook. For me these are the top three most important app right now.
NoRoot Data Firewall. Its ability to block hosts, block IP, block apps, set DNS, and block image sistem wide in one VPN service is unmatched yet. That's important because Android can activate only one VPN. Need update though.

I found Lastpass on Google Play, it is really an amazing app, thanks for your recommendation:highfive:
The Adguard is the exact app name? I cannot search it on GP... The Ads always annoy me, I think I need one this app

And yea, Adguard is the exact name. But the one you'll find on play store isn't the best version.
Download it from their official website.... https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/install.html
You can also find it here on xda... http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/adguard-ad-blocker-doesnt-require-root-t2958895/
Lastpass also has a desktop chrome extension. And your data is synced for free. So any login details you save on your phone will be available on your computer and vice versa.
Adguard too is available for your computer (if you're interested).
And since you use fb, g+ and twitter, give reddit a try, if you haven't already. You can directly visit their website @ reddit.com or you can just use their app (named Reddit on play store). At first it might seem overwhelming but trust me, you're going to get addicted.
APP2SD for low internal memory problems and xposed module PREVENT RUNNING..and AMPLIFY for battery save.

:highfive: The developer of Prevent Running comes from China, I used to use it very often, and the Greenify is also awesome.
It seems that the 2SD is also available to hide apps, is an app manager, NICE!

Yep. I use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Powerpoint for that. I've never tried anything else. Microsoft products worked really well for me. And so I stuck with them.
Btw I sent you a PM. Do check it

PERMANENTLY disabling internet and/or wi-fi connectivity on an android device.

Yeah, you read that right. Basically i'm trying to either find a tablet without internet functionality (which i assume is impossible in 2019) or disable all internet connectivity (or wi-fi connection, same thing) from a "normal" tablet.
Simply put i have ADHD (medicated) and tend to find access to the internet very distracting for my work, but i still need a device to write documents on. Problem is, most places where i work or study have wi-fi around, so i end up wasting hours of time, which i cannot afford to.
So, back to the topic: is there a way i can disable internet access from a tablet, maybe by deleting some file? I'm down to rooting the device, if necessary.
Thanks to anyone who can help me!
What your asking for is a bandaid in my opinion. I have the same issue as well, ADHD. What I've learned is just to focus on the task in your life. Such as the documents you need to type up of to look at the weather if it's part of your day.
Put it in like airplane mod or smth,or either, there are some apps for that, you give them the device administrator right, after that they control your daily internet usage,or if you want to block it you can simply do,but after giving an app the administrator rights, you can uninstall it

Thanks for your advice, but i was kind of expecting this answer. Still, anedoctal evidence has taught me that i'm much more productive in environments where i simply have no ways of accessing the internet. Also, i've been trying to "learn to just focus" for the past 30 years, and i've always failed, so i'm at the point where i'm fine with relying on bandaids.

This looks ingenious but quite convoluted; I find it weird that with all the ways you can brick a phone there isn't some file i can just delete to make internet connection imbossible. Thank you for your answer though, if nobody comes up with anything i'll try your method.
